RUZANTE, by Christopher Bayes and The Company, based on the writings of Angelo Beolco, adapted by Christopher Bayes and Steven Epp, directed by Christopher Bayes. David Geffen School of Drama, April 4–6, 2024.
Ruzante is back from the wars, only to find that his wife, Gnua, has shacked up with a “horrible rich ol’ bastard” to survive. With the help of his buddy from back home, Menato, can Ruzante win back his love? This contemporary adaptation of Angelo Beolco’s plays (Parlamento de Ruzante, La Betía, and Bilora, just to name a few) uses a combination of nonsense language, clowning, and song to explore comedy found at the heart of tragedy.
