When to Direct Refer to Endocrine Surgery
at Smilow Cancer Hospital
• Thyroid cancer
• Any thyroid nodule biopsied as indeterminate +/- suspicious molecular testing results
• Symptomatic or aesthetically bothersome thyroid nodules
• Patients interested in non-surgical options for thyroid nodules (ethanol or thermal ablation)
• Enlarged thyroid with substernal component, or tracheal compression > 30%
• Incidental thyroid nodule > 3 cm
• Primary hyperparathyroidism
• Secondary or tertiary hyperparathyroidism
• Hypercalcemia with a history of nephrolithiasis (kidney stones) or osteoporosis
• Hypercalcemia with high normal or elevated PTH
• Adrenal incidentaloma of any size*
• Known adrenal disease with hormone excess: Cushing’s syndrome, pheochromocytoma, primary hyperaldosteronism
* functional workup and dedicated imaging will be performed as indicated
