This FAQ outlines key information for partners, sponsors and media, including Yalari’s community impact, tax-deductible giving and the ways in which our work is Indigenous-led. Together with the stories and data in this press kit, it shows how Yalari creates lasting educational opportunities for Indigenous young people, their families and communities.

What does Yalari mean?

Yalari means ‘child’ in the Birri Gubba language.

Who does Yalari serve?

Indigenous children from regional and remote communities who have the potential and desire to thrive at leading Australian boarding schools, along with their families and communities who are partners in each student’s journey.

Why support Yalari?

Supporting Yalari enables long-term, life-changing educational opportunities for Indigenous young people, delivered through an Indigenous-led organisation with a strong track record of student success, alumni leadership and community impact.

How does Yalari demonstrate community support and create greater impact?

Yalari works in long-term partnership with families, communities and schools to support each student from application through to graduation and beyond. More than 600 Yalari alumni across Australia stay actively involved as mentors, cultural champions and leaders at student camps and events – strengthening outcomes for current students.

Alumni help lead our annual orientation camp and outback camps, ensuring strong cultural connection and peer support.

We actively involve parents and carers in the application, enrolment and ongoing support process, keeping family and culture at the centre of each scholarship journey.

Are donations to Yalari tax deductible?

Yes. Yalari is a registered Australian charity with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. All donations of $2 and over are tax deductible in Australia and donors receive a tax receipt for their records.

Is Yalari Indigenous-led?

Yes. Yalari is proudly Indigenous-led in a multi-faceted way:

Our Founding Director, Waverley Stanley AM, is a proud Indigenous Australian and serves on the Yalari Board, guiding our vision and direction as an Executive Director.

Around 30% of our Board members are Indigenous, including two Yalari alumni.

Since 2023, our Alumni Advisory Council – made up of Yalari graduates – provides advice on programs and strategy and acts as ambassadors in the community.

One third of Yalari staff are Indigenous, working daily with students, families, communities and partner schools.

Our 600+ Indigenous alumni and current families are at the heart of how Yalari is governed, delivers its programs and measures success.

SPOKESPERSON BIOGRAPHIES

WAVERLEY STANLEY AM

Founding Director

In 1979, a young Aboriginal boy from rural Queensland was awarded a scholarship to attend Toowoomba Grammar School, thanks to the advocacy of his Year 7 teacher, Mrs Rosemary Bishop. Waverley became the first Indigenous student in the school’s 100-year history to complete Year 12 and serve as a Prefect - an opportunity that shaped the direction of his life.

In 2005, he founded Yalari to ensure other Indigenous children could access the same life -changing educational opportunities. Under his leadership, Yalari has grown into a national organisation supporting more than 250 students on scholarships each year, with an alumni community of emerging leaders studying, working and contributing across Australia. Waverley is widely respected for his commitment to generational change and his ability to bring together schools, communities, philanthropists and partners around a shared vision.

His contribution has been recognised through a Churchill Fellowship, the Ernst & Young Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award (Northern Region), and his appointment as a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia for significant service to the Indigenous community through education. Despite these honours, Waverley remains grounded in the belief that guided his own journey: when a child is given the chance to learn, their future - and the future of their community - can change.

BRANDING

USE OF LOGO

To protect the integrity of our logo, always use the mark in its original form. Do not stretch, alter, recolour or modify it in any way. Ensure it remains clear, legible and placed on backgrounds that provide sufficient contrast.

The logo requires space to breathe. Maintain a minimum clear space equal to the height of the ‘a’ in Yalari on all sides. No text, graphics or other elements should appear within this area.

EVOLVING OUR BRAND

As we approach April 2026, we will begin thoughtfully transitioning away from our 20-year logo, honouring the legacy it has carried while evolving our visual identity for the future. This phased approach will ensure consistency across all touchpoints as we gradually introduce and embed the new wordmark logo as our primary brand mark.

Alongside this shift, we will move to a refined, more muted colour palette, creating a contemporary, confident look that reflects our maturity as an organisation while maintaining the integrity and recognition we have built over two decades.

The font and stroke were selected for clarity, legibility, and consistency with the brand.

Until April 2026

Maroon brings warmth, strength and cultural depth. It evokes the richness of Country - earth, ochre and deep soil tones - while symbolising resilience, leadership and community pride.

Gray introduces a contemporary, professional edge that reflects stability and integrity. As a neutral tone, gray allows maroon to stand confidently while creating a calm, inclusive visual environment.

Together, maroon and grey communicate a strong sense of purpose: grounded in culture, guided by integrity, and focused on empowering future generations through education.
