GAME PREVIEW Millicent v South Gambier The battle for the minor premiership of the 2022 Bendigo Bank Western Borer Football League season will heat up this Saturday as the two class teams lock horns. With both the ladder and head-to-head win-loss ratios identical, there is everything to gain for Millicent and South Gambier. Both teams have proven to be a cut above the rest throughout the year and with September coming fast, this already looms as a finals preview. The previous battles suggest there is little between the teams with accuracy helping the Demons steal the opening round matchup at McLaughlin Park, but the Saints hit back big time in the rematch where a young side applied maximum pressure to register a fine 32-point win. Neither side has been able to field its best 18 lately, but the Demons have been making major progress in that department with Josh Woodall and Brett O’Neil big name inclusions last week against West. It was a win they had to earn with the Roos jumping to a fast start, but they could not sustain the assault as the red and white were deadly in space, delivering the ball to their forwards with pace and accuracy. The results were devastating as Brayden Kain helped himself to 10 goals, while his partner in crime also helped himself to a six pack. Cutting off the delivery of the highest scoring team in the competition will be the number-one focus for the Saints, especially after South scored 147 last week. However, Scott Endrel could not complete the fixture after reigniting a knee injury and is in doubt for this weekend. South Gambier coach Kain said there is lots of excitement around the group about first bounce. “We are looking forward to the challenge to see where we are at as a group because it is shaping up to be between us two again,” he said. “We want to be the benchmark and these are the games we need to get on top of when it counts. “We want the ledger to be on our side again which could put a bit more pressure on them ahead of finals.” Despite its coach and big-name recruit being restricted to the sidelines in recent weeks, the Saints have still found ways to continue marching. McGuinness, Frazer Bradley and Callen McGrath have all continued to show their worth, while Dylan Bromley has taken a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. Bromley has proven deadly in one-on-one contests and is in prolific form kicking at least three goals in all-but three games this year. He was once again influential in their victory over East, which was the perfect warm up for this weekend following a quiet fortnight due to the bye. Millicent coach Clint Gallio said every game has been a challenge, but the stakes will be raised this time. “Every game has been tough this year, but this one in particular will be a great test,” he said. “Last time we played both teams had some good players out and now most of them are back playing. “We need to make sure we are playing four quarters of football because it will be a cracking contest.” West Gambier v Casterton Sandford The battle for third position on the ladder is heating up and Saturday’s West Gambier v Casterton Sandford fixture could have a big say on a three-way fight which may not be decided until the final siren of the home and away season. The Cats threw a curveball last week by pulling off a stunning comeback against North Gambier. The Victorians conceded the first four goals in as many minutes but through the tenacity of Adam McKinnon, Diarmid Cleary and Billy Galpin they managed to secure a confidence-boosting win. Casterton Sandford coach Kane Forbes said his group backs its abilities and is ready to keep the good results going this weekend. “There is 100% belief within in the group and the win over North helped cement that in our minds,” he said. “We still have to be more consistent for longer periods of time which is the challenge for us. “With West it is another little final because if we win we are looking pretty good and if we lose we are fighting hard for that last spot. “We want to try to get over them but that will not be an easy task with players like Lawry Bradley-Brown and Daron McElroy.” Despite going down to South Gambier by 10 goals, the Roos are bouncing in with some momentum having given the ladder leaders a small scare plus knocking off East. The likes of Jordan Williams and will aim to hurt the

East Gambier v North Gambier In what shapes up to be an important game for both teams East Gambier and North Gambier face off in what is always a spirited affair at the “Kennel”. Having only recorded one win from their first 10 games the Bulldogs are running out of time to keep their season alive being two four premiership points away from fourth placed West. Goal scoring has been an issue with East easily being the least productive team in front of goal and has only scored more behinds than majors on eight occasions this year. Every Bulldog would love nothing more than scoring a much-needed triumph against archrival North Gambier. The Tigers have had the better of the two hard fought clashes with some big second half performances getting the respective jobs done. But before the famous rivalry flares up again all the attention will be on one of East’s most loved players. This writer jumped the gun last week, but can say with confidence this time that longtime club servant and current playing co-coach Jayden Eldridge will wear the Bulldogs jumper for the 200th time in the A Grade arena. The impactful player can be damaging all over the ground, especially across the halfback line and was an integral part of East’s 2017 premiership. For many years Eldridge was a spiritual leader around McDonald Park and last year he was finally elevated to the senior coaching staff and his teammates will do their best to make one of their favourite’s proud.

East Gambier Red & Black Great day for footy last weekend but with 1 win out of 5, not the result we were looking for. U14's was a very low scoring game but the lads got the win in the end best players were Riley Lawrence, Jarvi Mee, Cruz McCracken, Mason Anderson and Rhys Grigg. U16's had their chances to win but need to focus more on the ball. Best players were Angus Clarke, Sam Couldrey, Jarvi Mee, Tex Tilly, Cruz McCracken and Campbell McClean . 18's simply out matched by a better side but they had a crack especially for how undermanned they were best players were Sam Couldrey, Noah Gollan, Harlon Puhara, Angus Clarke, Nicholas Bignell and Dominic McDonald. best 4 quarter games for the year but wee outmatched by an experienced side best players Tomas McCourt, Ben Gaffney, Ty s o n S h e p h e rd , J a c o b Wilkinson, Finn Graney and Jasper Thomas. Seniors went in with a very young side and never gave up all day best players was coach Jayden Eldridge, Nick Walters Luke johnston, Nick lock, John Forster and Jack Lawrence.

Today we have our Bob and Joy Lawson memorial and past players day look forward to a big crowd to honour 2 great contributors to our club. Also one our coaches and multiple best and fairest winner Jayden Eldridge plays his 200th senior game so get around the guys today a cheer them on to have a win against the arch rival North Gambier for their coach.

For the time of year it is, Casterton Sandford put on a great day for us, once the fog lifted, and the oval was in good condition considering. Congratulations to the Cats for the facility improvements which we see each trip and if we visit this time next year we might get to see the new lights in operation.

Unfortunately, for a lot of reasons, we didn't have many supporters on the day. If you are reading this you are probably not who this is directed to, but we need to get more people to the football/netball and after game at club, for both home and away games. If you are a grandparent, parent, sibling, partner of a player, or just a supporter, we'd love to see you more often. Our day was book ended by 2 bad losses, but the 16s and reserves had good wins. It has taken a while, but the 16s had their best side on the park for the year and boy didn't they deliver. Anything is possible with this group if they can stay healthy. Coach Shepherdson wo u l d h ave h a d t ro u b l e picking the best players, with awards going to Jonty Collins, Trae Hamilton, Cooper Turner, Aaron Dally and Darcy Arthurson (4 goals).

A grade coach Hardy has a headache working out how we kicked the first 4 goals but went into the first break 18 points down. Unfortunately, things got worse before they got better, helped by a send-off for one of the Cats, but ultimately we ran out of time for a disappointing loss. Our oldest players again got in the b e st p l aye rs , w h i c h i s a reflection on where we are at present, with awards going to Ciaran Buckley, Sam Stafford (7 goals), Justin McConnell, Mitch Kelton, Jay Turner and Nick McInerney. We had another debutant in Oscar Dempsey, another underage player with a big future. We are off to the kennel this week. With the u12s playing on the back oval, lets make sure there is lots of yellow and black around all day, for must win games on the main oval. The weather for last weeks games was just superb for June. A big day for the club, including the pilgrimage of the Ballarat Boys celebrating Millicent Falla's life, Freeze MND awareness and fundraising (with a moving post match address by sufferer and Past President Terry Mead) and our annual Sponsors Day. Well done Lisa (350) and Demi (150) on their netball milestones. A big day with mixed emotions, plenty to celebrate and reflect. The Magoos had a handy squad on the park and started a b i t s l o w. L o t s o f contributors on the day. Business- like and consistent ball gathering and movement got them over the line. Nat had his own ball and Dredgey snagged seven sausage rolls, with Chanty claiming one of them was his. Momentum and personnel are aligning with plenty of scope for more improvement. The Seniors started slowly too, but they continued to

work into space, create loose players and thrust the ball into the forward fifty. Backline was solid in repelling their forward entries and then being able turn this into transitions of attack, utilising the space created by our continually improving youngsters. Sam, Frazer and Eli got plenty of the ball and helped many of the forward movements. Dare we say it may be tough for Clint (reappointed as 2023 Coach), Hutch and Chipper to get back into the team, probably via the backline of the Rezzies.

We welcome South Gambier to McLaughlin Park today, and with top 2 clashes in almost every grade we look forward to some exciting footy.

Last weekend we hosted North Gambier at Island Park, the day began very foggy but by the main game the Park was bathed in sunlight, perfect conditions for watching and playing of Football.

Our Under 14 Cats got the day off to a good start with a 12 goal win, Jedd Rhook banging through 5 goals in a B.O.G. Performance, Archie Lane slammed through 4 goals and was also named in the best along with the dynamic duo from Dartmoor, Brody Pratt and Connor Stephens, as well as the reliable pairing of Riley Hutchins and Reghan Parsons. The Under 16's were a little slow to get going but pegged the opposition back in the second half and, although losing, learnt a lot about their opponents that they will be able to change the results when next they meet. Better players for the Cats were Bay McKinnon, Kaeden Talay, Dylan Munro, Mitchell Bright and Ricky Kaliebe.

The Senior game saw North get the early lead but our Cats, once they got going, looked the far better team, Billy Galpin didn't stop all day, taking plenty of knocks with a smile and a thankyou, and was named B.O.G. Others to be named in the better players were Diarmid Cleary, Adam McKinnon, Justin Carlin, Gabe Parsons and Joshua Cottier. After the game the Miss Casterton pageant was held and well attended, all the ladies looked lovely and it was a close contest all night, thankyou to all the organisers and to our Judges, particularly Lois, who returned from Milan just for the event.

WITH FROM THE ARCHIVES A WITNESS TO THEIR LIVES Saluting the champions: JOHNNY TAYLOR DUAL SANFL COACH; WEST FIRST FLAG COACH OVER the years many league footballers have come to Mount Gambier from the SANFL and VFL to play or coach in Mount Gambier and district. Harry Dennes, Laurie Taylor, Jim Sawford, Bill Heron, Bill James, John Yeates, Grant McArthur, Ian Jackman (West), Peter Marrett, Stan Rule, Ralph Rogerson, Fred Hepner, Gary Window, Tracey Braidwood, Gary Lazarus (East), Jack Kelly, Brian Wright, Allan Byron, Bernie Slattery, Les McKinnon, Garry Sims, Barry Smith (South), Fred Bolton, Ken Roberts, Russell Crow, Herb Henderson, Neil Sutherland, Bob Clayton, Richard Hill (Millicent), Murray Mooney, Wally Dittmar, Jack Sales, Ron Carlson, Graeme Robertson, Bob Bussenschutt, Graham Robbins, (Penola), Ritchie Green, Bill Cocks, Dave Gill, Terry Board, Ken Gladman, Frank Davis, Barry Padley, John Mossop (North) are a just a few of the many who have coached here after playing in the big leagues.

He played with West Adelaide from 1936 until 1949, playing 206 league games. Because of the war he played 168 games from 1936-41 and 1945-49 with another 38 league games for Glenelg/West Adelaide when clubs were combined because of the lack of players during the war. He became captain in 1945 and was captain of West Adelaide when they won the 1947 premiership. He became captain-coach in 1948 and again in 1949. Then Glenelg came calling and he transferred to the Bays where he also coached the league side from 1950 for three seasons until the end of 1952, notching another 55 league games. He also represented the state three times and was state captain. Taylor was the first SANFL player to reach 250 league games (261). After reaching 261 league games in Adelaide Taylor decided to look to the country and North Gambier appointed him captain-coach in 1953 at 32 years of age.

Also he was perhaps the youngest to ever play league football in the SANFL when he debuted in 1936 at the age of just 15. His name was John Taylor – better known as Johnny. A strongly built athletic type, Taylor started playing at centre half forward but over his career would play in all key positions as well as ruck. Like many from that era he was a “Collingwood six footer” in that he was just under six foot tall (5’11”) but powerfully built at 14 stone. He had all the tricks, was quick on his feet, could hand out a bone-crunching hip and shoulder but had perfect judgement in the air and took many pack marks during his career.

In that finals series he played in the centre for the first two finals (first semi final and preliminary) and after starting there again in the grand final he was overshadowed and moved to the back line to be high in West’s best players. After that premiership win he returned to North as a player in 1958 to play under former Carlton back pocket Ritchie Green who had taken over in 1957. At 37 years of age, the 1958 season was his last in the South East and Border Football League when the Tigers went down to West but he showed he could still match it with the best. In that 1958 final series his late goal won the first semi final after initially playing well in defence and he kicked two goals in the preliminary final playing at centre half forward. However, in the grand final Taylor and his Tiger teammates left their kicking boots at home and by quarter time had kicked 1.8 and by three quarter time only 1.10. Taylor had kicked four behinds from within 30 metres at different stages and while he made up for this with a great last quarter with two goals and a poster, the flag went to West. He was one of the greats of that early 1950s era and certainly, to my knowledge would have been the only local coach to have previously coached two SANFL clubs and with his then record number of SANFL games he was a prized catch for North Gambier when they appointed him as captain-coach.

Missing the finals in 1956 probably cost him his job at North. Despite this he was one of North’s best throughout that s e a s o n a t c e n t re h a l f b a c k a n d s o m e commentators were suggesting it might have been his last season in the SEBFL. He was a SEBFL inter-league representative during that time as well as being inter-league captain-coach but in 1957 he was wooed across to West Gambier to coach. His brother Laurie had been coach and had made significant changes to the team and many say he got West ready for their premiership assault. Laurie stayed on to help brother John as a player and they claim Laurie’s tactical brain was instrumental in helping West win the flag. Johnny Taylor took West to their first premiership in 1957 and played a significant part as both

MATCH REPORTS WEST GAMBIER V SOUTH GAMBIER Last me the two met, West completely dominated the young Demons from the first whistle and it was a 35 goal margin. This me round, South Gambier, missing key defender Ellie Bouchier, through illness, got off to a be er start and while the final margin did top 20 it was a vastly improved performance. It was a six goal margin at the first change as Sarah Ri er and Lisa McGregor nailed 18 from 23 to set the tone, while at the other end, some inaccuracy did give Roos defenders Jade Ri er and Amy Cram to show their strength on the rebound and create turn over ball. It was Sarah Ri er's return from a knee injury and the young shooter didn't miss a beat in a strong ba le with Demons defender Grace Edwards, who applied go o d p re s s u re o ve r t h e s h o t a n d rebounded the rare misses to keep South in touch. West's mid court, despite the fact it was missing Mikaela Horrigan, showed its trademark slick ball movement, with Anna Bosco fi ng in seamlessly at wing a ack, while Tara Bryant con nued her stellar season of two way running and crea ve delivery. The third quarter was a ght affair marred by an ankle injury to Ruby Richter, forcing South to reshuffle with Mykaela Thiele coming onto goal defence, Imogen Walker moving to the a acking wing and Tully McShane taking the defensive wing bib. Again, though, it was Sarah Ri er taking charge of the contest with her 15 from 16 as West extended what was a 14 goal half me lead to 15. The strong connec on between McGregor, Bryant and Sarah Ri er was again on show in the final quarter, despite the efforts of Edwards and Thiele to try and deny the scoring opportuni es and in the end the final margin was 21.

MILLICENT V EAST GAMBIER East Gambier welcomed back Sarah Lock to the shoo ng circle at the weekend but the Bulldogs cannot take a trick and defender Morgan Amy and star mid courter Emily Hunter were unavailable so it might be round 10 but the reigning premiers are s ll yet to put their preferred star ng seven out on court. That being said, East started well against Millicent, with Chloe Perryman taking the defensive bib alongside Bo Creek, and a perfect 11 from 11 from Amryn Bosko, ensuring it was a goal for goal contest with Millicent only one goal clear at the first change. The second quarter was also a ght affair with both teams looking to work the ball through tough defensive pressure all over the court to find their respec ve shooters in space – Tabatha Sanderson for Millicent and Bosko for East. By the main break, it was a four goal lead to the home side. The Saints started to take control in the third and with Sanderson having her best shoo ng quarter, ne ng 11 from 13, the lead was 10 by the final change. No team is keen on celebra ng honourable losses but East would be happy to have matched it so closely with Millicent without Hunter or Amy and keep the damage to a 14 goal margin. Tarsh McCallum was a standout for the Bulldogs, while Bosko looked to be returning to her best in goals. The mid court of Lisa Duldig and Georgia Clark were best for the Saints as they worked hard both in transi on as well as placing defensive pressure on the Bulldogs feeders.

CASTERTON SANDFORD V NORTH GAMBIER Another week, another demonstra on of outstanding shoo ng from Caroline Wakefield for North Gambier and if defensive combina ons don't get enough help from their mid court in slowing the ball movement, Wakefield will posi on strongly and finish accurately from the first whistle to the last. The star Tigers shooter converted 58 from 61, shoo ng a perfect 18 from 18 in the second quarter and 16 from 16 in the last. It was a masterclass that no defensive combina on could stop and it made for a tough day out for the Casterton Sandford defensive unit of Ebany Jarrad, Caeleigh Humphries and Tess Marra, who also had a rare s ng in goal keeper to try and curb the influence of Wakefield. At the other end, things weren't much easier for the Cats as the defensive unit of the Tigers refused to allow them me and space. Libby Morgan was relentless at wing defence in her commitment to denying easy access to the circle's edge and when the ball was turned over she was a key link player in transi on, while Mel Renko and Zahra Crough combined well in the defensive circle to make scoring as difficult as possible. Ivy Lane, Madalene Cleary and Charlo e Rice worked hard in the shoo ng circle and while they weren't as accurate as Wakefield, they did make the most of their rare opportuni es to make sure their team mates efforts were reflected on the scoreboard. Cleary moved to centre for the second half and her leadership through the middle and combina on with Scarle Jarrad gave the Cats some stability, but in the end, the Tigers had too much firepower all over the court and the scoreline ended up 70-29.

ROUND PREVIEWS EAST GAMBIER V NORTH GAMBIER Clearly the match of the round as the reigning premiers host North Gambier. Both have struggled to find any momentum in 2022 with injury and player unavailability not allowing them to se le and finetune any one combina on but both know the clock its cking and they know they are in a fight with each other and South Gambier for the final two places in the top four. North shooter Caroline Wakefield is in career best form and misses a handful of goals at worst every week so East will be all too aware they have to limit how o en she gets the ball in hand. Bo Creek and Morgan Amy are strong in the air and will be looking to disrupt those aerial feeds, and the pressure from Tyne Bosko, Emily Hunter and Tarsh McCallum out the front will be pivotal in denying Wakefield easy ball. At the other end, Mel Renko and Zahra Crough are s ll building as a defensive combina on, having played limited me together despite the fact it is now round 11, and they will be looking to shut down the space for sarah Lock and Amryn Bosko, who teamed up last weekend for the first me since the early rounds. Amryn Bosko was back to her accurate best at the weekend and Zlock will be be er for the run a er a long lay off. This match looms as a ght defensive struggle with both team knowing they need to stop the ball before it gets into the opposi on shoo ng circle and while it will be a ght affair, Wakefield's form definitely ps the scales in the Tigers' favour.

MILLICENT V SOUTH GAMBIER South Gambier certainly showed improvement at the weekend when it took on West Gambier for this second me this year and now the Demons face another challenge when they head to McLaughlin Park to take on the Saints. South would be hoping Ellie Bouchier is recovered to take her place at the defensive end, but they could s ll be looking to cover the loss of Ruby Richter to an ankle injury. The Saints, on the other hand, are a se led line-up, boas ng plenty of depth and they will be looking to con nue to finetune every aspect of their game as the final round of matches kicks off. Millicent's a ack line is all class, boas ng the speed and smarts of Demi Verbena and Paige Nitschke, the hard running and work rate of Lisa Duldig and the strength under the post of Tabatha Sanderson. At the other end, Georgia Clark con nues to loom as a key piece of the puzzle on the defensive wing, while Hannah Nitschke and Por a McRae are an emerging defensive combina on that not only play a ght one on one game but also read the play well and o en hunt the intercep on. The Nitschke-McRae ba le with Alyssa Duncan and Lara Munro will be an intriguing one and South's mid court of Megan Reid and Tully McShane will need to be pa ent with ball in hand and think their way through the relentless defensive pressure with which the Saints are synonymous. At the other end of the court, Grace Edwards looms as a great match up for Sanderson, while Bouchier will look to use her athle cism to great advantage to try and break up the aerial feeds into the Saints shoo ng circle. It is hard to mount a case for a South victory but they will be looking to vastly improve the scoreline – both how much they allow Millicent to score and also the tally they can muster themselves.

WEST GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD West Gambier made light work of South Gambier at the weekend and they will be looking to again secure a comprehensive victory when they host Casterton Sandford. That Cats are coming off a tough ou ng where they tried to curb the scoring of North's Caroline Wakefield and things don't get any easier this weekend with Sarah Ri er, back from injury in round 10, showing great form, both with her movement and her accuracy. And when she has the likes of Lisa McGregor, Mikaela Horrigan and Tara Bryant feeding her the ball, much will rely on the pressure on the outside of the circle as much as it will the tenacity of Cats defenders Ebany Jarrad and Caeleigh Humphries. At the other end, Amy Cram and Jade Ri er con nue to be a tough defensive duo to score against and Madalene Cleary, Charlo e Rice and Ivy Lane will need to be strong with their moves and the delivery from Scarle Jarrad and Makayla Hutchins will need to be precise. The Roos, along with Millicent, are the most se led line-up in the compe on, basically playing the same seven almost every week, and their on court chemistry will challenge the Cats, who have not yet been able to put out a se led combina on due to injury and player unavailability. Tess Marra had a s nt in the defensive circle last weekend for the Cats and she might again be deployed in that role to minimise the influence of Sarah Ri er as the Cats look to mi gate the scoreboard damage.

East Gambier Red & Black A GRADE - East 49 lost to Millicent 63 The first half we came out firing and played a very patience game. We knew Millicent would ramp it up and add that extra pressure in the third quarter, which got on top of us. Defensively in the last quarter we played really well, but weren't able to capitalise enough on the turnovers to close the gap. Big thankyou to Kate & Chloe for stepping up and having to play two games, it's a huge ask but you girls played great. I can see all our hard work and set plays coming through each game and it's really exciting to watch. Lots of positives to take away from this game for sure. Playing consistent netball and pulling together what we have been training. Great drives in attack made for successful goal scoring while defensively the girls put on heavy pressure causing numerous turnovers. Great game. Matilda took some crucial turnovers deep in defence to lift us when needed. Jordy was consistent in goals and finished off her opportunities. Keelie worked really well at WD, putting lots of pressure through the mid court, she drove well coming out of defence and was that consistent link for us. Overall, everyone put in and although we didn't keep them to our proposed score, there were some great passages of play and our passing was much more improved them previous weeks. Let's keep this up. 15A's – East 7 lost to Millicent 60 I want to start by saying how proud I am of all girls, from both the A's and B's, proud of the growth as individual players and as teams. The girls that have been playing 2 games each week, the girls sitting bench for the other team each week, thank you and please look after yourselves. Those girls that get put into positions they don't normally play, you keep proving to me how talented you all are. Back to playing North this week and all I can ask is more improvement and keep working as hard as you have.

Although we lost by 1 we're ecstatic to see what these girls have achieved over the last 10 rounds and what they have the ability to do moving forward. Under 11’s North 6 lost to Cast 34 With a very cold and foggy start we came up against a very strong Casterton side. We took some time to settle but did gain some momentum in the later part of the game. We need to be strong with our shoulder passes and chase all the loose balls to give ourselves the best opportunities to get control and score. Well done to Indi and Isla for continually moving the ball down the court. Won’t be long and we will all be able to do this so keep working hard. Under 13A’s North 14 lost to Cast 21 Today was a great team effort. We played good netball in very cold and foggy weather conditions. We were strong on attack and moved the ball well through the centre court. Our defence was solid, and we managed to utilise and score from the turn overs. At the end of the 3rd quarter the score was 13-12, and it appeared as if the girls were p leas antly s u rp ris ed by th eir own performance. In the 4th quarter, they lost some focus. They missed crucial shots and made few unnecessary mistakes. Casterton used that to their advantage. Although we lost the game, it was a very hard-fought effort. The girls improved a lot in stronger and more accurate passing. Indeed, a game to be proud of. Macey and Cara were strong targets in the ring and have developed a strong combination together. Ava Collins has made a good transition into defense with Ruby Mitchell and continue to work together. Sarah Brown did a lot of leg work and drove nicely to the top of the ring feeding into the goaler. The girl know what’s coming ahead and need to focus on working strongly as a unit. Yellow & Black resulting in many touches. Ruby Mitchell stepped onto the court for us and played an outstanding game, tracking her player well and taking many intercepts. We also have some fantastic passages of play in attack, transitioning the ball smoothly into our goal ring. Casterton however, also played a great game, which meant it was goal for goal for most of the game. Unfortunately, in the last quarter we ran out of legs and the Cats capitalised on our errors. It was not the result we hoped for, but there were so excellent passages of play. A big thank you to Ruby and Jayme Young who helped us out today. Casterton came out very strong leaving North with a fight on their hands. North moved the ball well in attack and the defensive end got a lot of intercepts and touches, particularly the goal defenders. Going into the final quarter North were only down by two, but Casterton crept away with a couple of lastminute turn overs. A good effort by the North girls - we will get them next time! From the attack end to the defence end, the pressure was strong and the movement of the ball down the court was smooth. The goalies moved well in the goal ring despite some very strong Casterton defence and were wellsupported but the mid court players who worked the ball down to and around the goal circle exceptionally well. The defensive end was very tight, with lots of intercepts and touches picked up. All round it was an excellent game, and it was great to see our hard work at training really starting to show on the court. Caroline shot accurately and Macey had some great movement out the front. It was a very defensive game, with Libby, Mel and Zahra picking up lots of turnovers and intercepts. West Gambier Blue & Red We had unseasonal sunshine and no rain when we welcomed South Gambier last weekend. Results from the round were U/11 - The little roos had another great win on Saturday. We were challenged early in the game by a much improved South. It's great to see some of the things we have been working on at training brought into our games. Every week you all improve so much. West 15 – South 8 Best players Zoe Boyd and Harper Lindner U/13B - Excellent work again this week, with a nice little change and challenge of skills, with a improved south we had a harder game then we thought. With equal scores at the first break we had to put our skills we had learned over the season into action. Our goalies switching on and we took off with a nice little lead at half time. With changes throughout the game showing their skills off nicely. Sammy, Ella, Eva and Isla having a quarter in defence each and showing how handy they are in the goal circle. West 28 – South 15 Best players Eva Povey and Ella Mckenny Game day awards Claire Hunter and Isla Lynch U/13A - After a weeks break and a rest from training it was pleasing to see the girls hit the court with confidence and settle quickly into a new combination. Everyone performed their role to enable us to come away with a strong win. We need to keep working hard as we head into the final round. West 49 – South 19 Best players Swaye Lindner and Lara Murdoch Game day awards Swaye Lindner and Brydee Starick U/15B - This weekend the girls took to the court against a determined South side. After a week filled with half the team battling illness the girls had to work incredibly hard to gain the lead. We saw Maya play a ripper game in the mid court, continuously offering and going for second and third attempts. Miley deserved herself best on court for her strong attack through the mid court and working well in and around the ring with Holly and Ava. Special mention to Zarah who pushed through some pain, never dropped her head and kept her defence strong earning herself second best player. We have seen the confidence of the girls grow throughout the season and look forward to watching them in the run up to finals. West 34 – South 25 Best players Miley Vivian and Zarah Sugden U/15A - A perfect day for netball saw the girls go in with a positive attitude towards making amends to the last time the two teams met. Great intercepts from the defence saw plenty of turnovers resulting in goals. Excellent team effort today. Well done girls. West 40 – South 16 Best players Lucy Simpson and Tully Lindner Game day awards Alex Hudson and Mikayla Pearson U/17s - Another tough game for my girls today. South are sitting second on the ladder behind Millicent so it was never going to be an easy game for us. I take my hat off to the defence girls Maddie Milich, Hannah Seidel and Kirra McKenny, never giving up and contesting everything. We read the ball well and we had plenty of interceptions. Our centre court girls, Stevi Clayton, Amity Sheedy, Charlotte Scott and Halle Boult worked the ball down the court well at times and into the goalies creating plenty of opportunities for our goalies to score. Jordy Hereper, Aleisha Pearson and Stevi Clayton had to work hard against the South defence and when it worked it looked good. We just need to keep working at it. West 19 – South 53 Best players Maddie Milich and Kirra McKenny Game day awards Maddie Milich and Hannah Seidel C Grade - Another tough fight for the girls, didn’t quite get the tick on the board but would definitely still count our efforts as a win due to a nearly 30 goal loss in our previous game to only going down by 10 goals second time around. After some hard work put in at trainings it was really great to see the girls implement what we had been learning. An amazing effort to our goalies who were constantly working around the ring taking every opportunity they could to get the goals. As usual some outstanding defensive work by all our defenders, holding their players out and putting that pressure to get some well-earned turnovers. The mid court fought endlessly feeding the ball into the ring and constantly making those second efforts. It was really refreshing to see in comparison to our first game against South just how far the girls have come and how much the team has developed. West 34 – South 45 Best players Emily Sutherland and Lisa Boyd B Grade - Took to the court with a renewed energy after the June long weekend break. Plenty of positivity on the court and the evidence was there how hard they’d been working to pull it all together. Abby and Carly worked well in the goal circle with plenty of conversions, Bianca, Zoe, Kirby and Kellie combining well through the mid court and defensively Maddy and Courtney threw everything they had at South’s goalies. Unfortunately an injury in the second quarter put a bit of a spanner in the works, but at no stage did the girls give up. Highlight of the game came from Kirby! A Reserve - The first Quarter the girls were goal for goal with the attacking girls making some beautiful leads, but with the South girls hardly missing any goals, it made it hard to get any turn over ball and we fell short at the end of the game. West 44 – South 46 Best players Claire Hunter and Chelsea Tremelling A Grade - Good to be back to netty after the long weekend. Thankyou to Anna for stepping up playing for us on the wing, backing it up from a full game in A Res. You built across the game and like I've previously said, it is so pleasing we can rely on our A Res girls to get the job done. We welcomed back Jade and Sarah who both had strong games. Tara was brilliant all day, taking some beautiful long hard drives. Zoe and Amy were strong in defence and continued to be o p t i o n s i n atta c k . Casterton-Sandford

Round 10 for the 2022 season saw the Casterton-Sandford netball teams take on North Gambier at Island Park.

Seniors: The A Grade girls were up for a tough fight with North making a reasonable lead in the first half. Although the girls couldn’t close the gap created, they had an incredible third quarter only going down by one goal, but with North on fire in the fourth, they unfortunately stretched the margin further, leaving our girls with a 29-70 loss. Madalene, Makayla, Tessa & Scarlett played consistently throughout the game. Mikayla, Bridie & Gaby were the backbone of the A Reserves this week. With a close score line all game, the girls couldn’t quite get the better of North losing 55-60 Our B Grade side went down 45-60, but the score line was not a reflection of how well the girls played. Kerri, Dakota, Katie & Annalee made some terrific passages of play in both attack & defence. C Grade players in Brittany, Kim, Anna, Michelle & Sarah had a tough-fought game, but with outstanding teamwork and inspirational determination, they came away with a 4 goal win (38-34). The Under 17’s this week made some critical turnovers, and with well timed leads made by Ivy, Chloe, Ebany, Madeline & Marissa, the girls ran away with a close win 56-52.

Blue, White & Red Juniors: Under 15A players Chelsea, Indi, Matilda & Brydie had a tough game against the strong North side, coming away with a 38-67 loss. The Under 15B’s were also out of luck despite the relentless effort shown by Brydie, Caitlyn & Charlotte. Unfortunately the girls couldn’t put a stop to North’s fast goal scoring, losing 15-55. Under 13A players Ylana, Renee & Adele had to keep their heads high as North applied some strong defensive pressure. Unable to out-do the North girls they unfortunately lost 4-49. Our Under 13B’s had a terrific game with key players in Rachel, Ylana, Chloe & Marlee. The girls never gave up and with their hard work came away with the win 21-14. Mia & Skye stepped on to the court with their team in the Under 11’s ready from the first whistle. With great passes, intercepts, and talk they had the biggest win for the club for the day 34-6. Well done girls! We also had some Milestone Games! Congratulations to Emma Grigg and Hannah Nash on 50 games & Chloe Foster and Makayla Hutchins on 100 games.
