Industry 5.0: Cobots Bring Collaboration to Food and Beverage Production

The evolution from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0 is reshaping modern manufacturing, with a growing focus on collaboration between humans and intelligent machines. At the centre of this shift are collaborative robots – cobots –machines designed to work alongside people on factory floors.

Unlike traditional industrial robots, which are isolated for safety, cobots are engineered to interact safely with human operators, offering flexibility, responsiveness and improved workflow continuity.

According to IDTechEx’s Collaborative Robots 2025–2045 report, the global cobot market is projected to grow from $2 billion in 2023 to $50 billion by 2035, at a compound annual growth rate of 34.5%.

This new generation of automation aligns with Industry 5.0’s emphasis on human-machine cooperation, where technology enhances rather than replaces human input. In food and beverage manufacturing, this includes cobots managing repetitive or precision tasks such as high-speed packing, quality control, or end-ofline palletising, while human workers handle oversight, adjustment, and decision-making.

Cobots already account for a growing share of global robot deployments in the food and beverage sector, alongside automotive, electronics, and healthcare. IDTechEx reports that over 60% of cobot installations to date are found in these four industries, highlighting their flexibility across regulated and complex environments.

Machine vision systems embedded in modern cobots support food-grade quality assurance. Time-of-flight and high-resolution cameras, for example, enable real-time 3D defect detection with sub-10% depth error, allowing cobots to sort or reject items with up to 95% accuracy. These systems also ensure safe interaction, with obstacle detection response times below 100 milliseconds.

Artificial intelligence is further enhancing cobot utility. AI models – some trained on more than 10,000 visual datasets – now allow for object recognition rates as high as 98%, critical in fast-moving operations such as ingredient bin picking or dynamic packaging lines. Predictive maintenance systems, powered by AI platforms like Nvidia Jetson, are helping reduce unplanned downtime by up to 25%, according to Nvidia (2024).

From a commercial standpoint, the business case is strengthening. Cobots typically cost between $30,000 and $80,000, with return on investment expected to be achieved in 12 to 30 months – faster than traditional industrial systems. Integration times are short, often under four hours, and modular end-of-arm tooling supports diverse tasks without full system redesigns.

As labour shortages and reshoring strategies reshape global production, especially in developed markets, cobots are emerging as a scalable, flexible solution. In food and beverage manufacturing, where hygiene, speed, and consistency are essential, the collaborative approach of Industry 5.0 is proving both practical and profitable. Cobots are emerging as a scalable, flexible solution.

Bridging the messy middle for F&B innovators and entrepreneurs

In food and beverage innovation, a great idea isn’t enough and turning it into a product the world wants to buy is a high-stakes leap.

That’s where the New Zealand Food Innovation Network steps in – helping ambitious innovators de-risk experimentation, build capability, and bridge the gap from small-scale trials to commercial-scale production.

When New Ground Coffee couldn’t find a manufacturer to meet their quality standards, they turned to FoodBowl. Access to specialist equipment and hands-on testing allowed them to refine processes, maintain supply during growth, and become ANZ’s leading specialty canned coffee manufacturer.

MiteyCo Brands’ allmite gold spread had a bold idea but limited production experience. Through NZFIN, the team learned machinery, refined processes, and scaled with confidence – a foundation that now supports new products and market expansion.

Leaft Foods and The Pure Food Co show how NZFIN supports world-first ideas. Leaft developed and scaled a novel leaf protein concentrate, recently launching their first product. The Pure Food Co worked with FoodBowl from the beginning, to launch a unique form of food and drinks for the elderly, now capitalising on a growing market globally. Both businesses trialled production, grew capability, and establish their own site on the back of NZFIN support.

By providing infrastructure, technical guidance, and flexibility, NZFIN removes the high stakes from innovation. Startups can trial processes, hire machinery, protect IP, and validate products without investing millions upfront.

Across coffee, spreads, plant-based protein, beverages, and much more, NZFIN proves that supporting ideas early is about more than access – it’s about building the capability and confidence innovators need to scale locally and globally.

Change to Plastic Packaging Product Stewardship (PPPS)

What will change with a move from voluntary product stewardship to mandatory?

The Waste Minimisation Act (2008) enabled voluntary product stewardship schemes to seek government accreditation. In 2020, six priority products, including plastic packaging, were identified. The Packaging Forum runs voluntary schemes for glass, soft plastics, food & beverage cartons, and caps and lids. Its Glass Packaging Forum Scheme was accredited in 2010, reaccredited in 2018, and has applied for extension; the Soft Plastic Recycling Scheme was accredited in 2018 and seeks priority product status. In partnership with the New Zealand Food & Grocery Council, the Packaging Forum co-designed a mandatory Plastic Packaging Product Stewardship (PPPS) scheme, with its report submitted to the Ministry for the Environment.

The Packaging Forum expressed support for the Government’s proposal to introduce an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. This aims to accelerate the implementation of EPR schemes and would also enable the transition from a plastic-only EPR to one that covers all packaging types, which would align New Zealand with most global EPR initiatives, except for those in India and the Philippines, which are limited to plastics.

The implications of mandatory EPR, as compared to voluntary, are significant but necessary to lift our resource recovery performance. Throughout the co-design of the PPPS, substantial insights were gained regarding the establishment, implementation, and operation of a producer-funded system. The Packaging Forum, as a member of the Global Alliance for EPR (EXPRA), has benefited from their three decades of experience.

Key principles emerging from this process include:

• Clearly defined responsibilities, distinguishing between producers who are financially liable and the service providers receiving funding.

• Governance should be informed by this principle, favouring a skills-based board led by producers.

• The Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) determines fee structures.

• The government should set targets and address issues such as free riding, particularly relating to online sales.

• A level playing field is essential; multiple PROs handling the same materials may result in competition for identical waste streams.

• EXPRA recommends aligning collection and sortation systems for both EPR and Container Return Schemes (CRS) to ensure infrastructure investments support both models.

How would the PPPS system work?

Producers register with the PRO and pay a stewardship fee for placing plastic packaging on the NZ market. Councils, commercial and community recyclers, and retailers or others offering take-back services also register, provide collection data, and receive payments based on their service quantity and quality. Domestic and offshore processors register as well and either buy materials or receive gate fees. The PRO manages the scheme, sets and collects producer fees, allocates funding for collection, sorting, and reprocessing, and applies eco-modulation to reduce

non-recyclable packaging and encourage investment in local recycling systems.

The PPPS design included a comprehensive review of more than 30 PROs and their respective governance structures and recommends a Board comprising nine officers, with the majority representing producers or their corporate entities, and a minority consisting of independent governance experts who meet agreed experience criteria. Independent guidance will be provided by an Advisory Group, which will also nominate one of its members to serve on the Board. The PRO will operate as a not-for-profit organisation established under the Incorporated Societies Act.

The PPPS Cost Benefit Analysis model provided estimated costs for collection, sortation, and reprocessing systems, forecasting an increase in plastic recovery rates (excluding plastic beverage containers, which are not included in this scope) from 19.1% to 50% over ten years as the producer pays system is implemented.

Studies show PROs spend 1% to 3.2% of their budgets on consumer education and behaviour change, while scheme management costs account for about 10% of revenue.

The PPPS also recommends funding R&D for new reprocessing technologies.

Best practice guidance suggests that fee modulation should be implemented gradually, beginning with simple differentiation fees between recyclable and non-recyclable packaging. Over time, this could develop into a more detailed fee structure. For example, Fost Plus in Belgium have established over 13 different fees for plastics. The PPPS recommends starting with three categories which aligns with the UK government EPR Recyclability Assessment Model:

• Recyclable

• Conditionally Recyclable

• Not recyclable

The PPPS scheme design recommends that this model is developed into an all of packaging EPR scheme to lift all packaging recovery and recycling rates and create a level playing field.

Empowering Businesses on their Exporting and Importing Journey

Come visit our friendly New Zealand Food Safety teams at Foodtech Packtech. You can find us at stand (BGH12) or drop into our seminars:

• Tuesday 2 September at 11.00am: Exporting - Are you ready to take your food or fibre business global?

• Wednesday 3 September at 2.00pm: Future foods and the regulatory framework

You can also listen to our presentations as part of the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology Inc (NZIFST) Seminar Series at 2pm, 3 September and 11am, 4 September.

New Zealand has a thriving food and fibre sector, with businesses exporting globally and importing food for domestic use or re-export every day.

The New Zealand Government has set an ambitious goal to double the value of exports by 2034. The Ministry for Primary Industries’ (MPI) is central to achieving this target by supporting growth and maintaining a trusted food safety system, one of New Zealand’s strongest selling points in global markets. A robust food safety system not only protects public health but also reinforces the integrity of the New Zealand food story.

To support this dynamic environment, MPI’s has established advice services for exporters and importers. The services are free to use and provide one-on-one advice, educational resources, webinars and guiding documents to support trade. We work with other New Zealand Government agencies to share insights and address challenges for business. Through this we support New Zealand businesses to successfully get products into overseas markets, and food importers to bring safe and suitable food into New Zealand.

By working with the us businesses will gain the confidence to navigate the regulatory and compliance landscape for both export and import requirements.

Exporter Help: Supporting every step of the journey

Our Exporter Help team assists food and fibre businesses and those working with them at all stages of their export journey, from those thinking about exporting to established exporters needing clarification on requirements.

Export rules can vary significantly depending on the product and destination, and they often change. The team provides accurate, up-to-date information to help businesses export efficiently and avoid costly mistakes.

In June, the team hosted a well-attended webinar: Introduction to Overseas Market Access Requirements (OMARs) for Animal Products which was developed in response to industry demand. The recording is available to view on the MPI website.

Food Importer Advice: Ensuring safe and suitable imports

Established in late 2024, Food Importer Advice offers guidance, education, and ongoing support to help businesses meet food safety obligations and ensure imported products are safe and suitable for consumers.

Only Good Receives the sole WorldStar Packaging Award for New Zealand

As a leading manufacturer and distributor of New Zealand-made personal care products Apex Brands has been recognised for their new refillable packaging in the 2025 round of the prestigious global WorldStar Packaging Awards. Apex Brands are the only New Zealand company to receive a WorldStar Packaging award this year.

This global recognition follows winning the gold in the Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards; which are the exclusive entry point for Australia and New Zealand packaging innovations.

When Only Good Hand & Body Wash (Apex Brands) went through a significant re-brand and packaging overhaul to reclaim the position as the go-to ‘only good’ personal wash range in the New Zealand grocery market, their customers were top of mind throughout the process.

Only Good knew that ‘another brown bottle’ wasn’t what their customers wanted, so they created a clean, luxurious product at an accessible price point, that also had great sustainable design appeal.

The Only Good mission is to be good - inside and out- so that meant the bottle itself needed to offer a low environmental impact and to be able to meet the Sustainable Packaging Design principles.

The simplistic bottle and artwork design combined with the desire to remove single use plastic wherever possible, led to the artwork being screen printed directly on to the bottle, removing the need for a plastic label.

The recyclable, refillable and reusable bottles are also made with a blend of sugar cane and recyclable plastic that has been domestically sourced in New Zealand. The Only Good team worked closely with partners at Forward Plastics to create a sustainable and responsible alternative to virgin plastic packaging.

Bottle design, material and finish have been carefully considered utilising a range of different HDPE options, such as Sugar Cane HDPE and Recycled HDPE across all products.

In addition, all hand washes are available in an economical 600ml refill format. The Pump lid and mechanism has also been designed for multiple repeat uses.

The Only Good team worked closely with partners at Forward Plastics to create a sustainable and responsible alternative to virgin plastic packaging.

Developing reusable packaging also enables brands to become more circular by design through:

• Designing durable packaging that can withstands multiple uses.

• The ability to design refillable packs that incorporate recycled content.

• Packaging that is designed at the start to be truly recyclable in the country it is sold.

• The ability to incorporate intuitive recycling labels such as the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) on-pack to effectively communicate to consumers the correct disposal of the packaging at end of life.

Refillable packaging also enables customers to become loyal to a Brand’s journey towards more circular and sustainable business practices.

Reusable and Refillable Packaging like the Only Good Hand & Body Wash (Apex Brands) from New Zealand is a perfect example of one way to meet packaging design targets with an ultimate aim of designing out waste at the start, reducing single use plastics, reducing the amount of packaging used, incorporating recycled content and renewable materials and adding the benefit of refillable and reusable. The end result of the re-brand was a new design which showcases a combination of contemporary design aesthetics and clean credentials.

The AIP, a proud partner to Foodtech Packtech congratulates Hand & Body Wash (Apex Brands), recipient of the WorldStar Packaging Award for New Zealand. This globally recognised award helps shine the light on New Zealand as an innovative country for Sustainable Packaging Design.
