A MODEL’S FIRST YEAR IN THE GAMING INDUSTRY. By Tia Alexandra

t the forefront of technological advancement, video games have .ourished into one of the mostprogressive and lucrative industries in the world. In conjunction with the rise of online platforms such as YouTube, gaming-related media is now a major source of entertainment for an ever-expanding demographic. Content creators like PewDiePie and Markiplier have risen to mainstream stardom for pioneering the “let’s play” formula, based in reaction and commentary.With the addition of Twitch, an online platform for independent game broadcasting, gamers andmusicians can now livestream their craft while interacting with their audience in real time.Adding in virtual reality, gaming and independent video spell the future of entertainment. As a model, gamer and aspiring on-camera personality, the decision to jump in and apply my talents seemed right, if not a little scary. I started as just another fan of YouTubers such as Jacksepticeye, the Game Grumps and Rooster Teeth, dreaming of entering the gaming industry to leave my mark as an entertainer. Although my dreams were lofty and my ambition was intense, I was still wary of gaming culture’s treatment of women. Online harassment and ultimately rejection were a real fear. I had a preconceived notion about the gaming community: that women are less welcome, and are not received as positively as their male counterparts.After traveling to all three Penny Arcade Expos around the United States in cosplay and starting my own Twitch channel, I was - for the most part - proven wrong. The industry behind gaming is hungry for female talent,

rewarding hard work and serious interest regardless of gender.However, this acceptance is not necessarily re.ected in a male-dominated consumer culture. Itis very dif.cult for a woman to act outwardly feminine as a gamer and be taken seriously. Showing up to PAX Prime in cosplay as a sexy Juliet Starling from the comedy-horror hack and slash game, Lollipop Chainsaw, I had no idea how I was going to be received by the gaming community. I wound up having a fantastic time, receiving positive encouragement and making several new friends. Posing in cosplay came naturally to me as a model, with plenty of photo ops with fellow cosplayers and enthusiasts. It was shortly after PAX Prime that I developed my .rst contact at Astro Gaming. Astro has been a key player in introducing me to the gaming industry, becoming more friends than clients, and leading to more networking opportunities thanI could ever have imagined. They even have another beautiful model as part of the main staff! I was never intensely judged or rejected, rather welcomed as a valued member of the community.Heading out to PAX South in San Antonio, I was offered the opportunity to mingle with some of the best streamers on Twitch. Like Astro, the general acceptance I felt by the Twitch community inspired me to become more involved. Thus, “IAmInertia” was born. As a new streamer, my goal was to create a laid-back, positive space for viewers to watch me play games like DayZ, Rust, and Alien Isolation while interacting directly. After starting on April1st, the channel has

developed a solid foundation of returning viewers who enjoy helping me as much as they do watching. At PAX East in Boston, I had the thrill of being approached and congratulated by a few of my viewers. Having braced myself for an onslaught of harassment, I was pleased with my viewership’s acceptance of my style of entertainment - so long as I didn’t act too feminine. My journey into gaming has had plenty of bumps in the road, showing me the reality of how women are received by a majorly male-centric culture. A woman still risks online harassment simply by showing her face, but there is respect for having a serious interest in gaming along with a fun attitude. Unfortunately, there is little margin for a woman to be openly feminine before the harassment starts. In my Twitch channel, I generally wear t-shirts and sweatshirts that cover my shoulders to avoid being labeled as a “Twitch cam girl”. The one time I wore a low-cut tank top on stream, I was targeted by rape threats and hackers who blew me and my co-player up in our DayZ server. The gaming community is sensitive to attractive women exploiting its predominantly male audience, still demonizing expressions of femininity online. There is more acceptance of femininity in terms of cosplay, but beautifully dressed-up ladies still risk being labeled as “booth babes”, a derogatory term essentially for scantily clad brand ambassadors with no interest in gaming. The assumption that beautiful women only get into gaming to make money off men is both incorrect and dangerous. Gaming has more diversity in women than is generally portrayed. At each Penny Arcade Expo, Isaw many women of all ages, races and looks, each with a sparkle of excitement in her eye.There are more women getting involved in gaming than the culture can keep up with. In order to continue fostering the same accepting community that I found at the core of the gaming industry, the female perspective must be acknowledged in the larger community. With games such as the Tomb Raider series and “Undertale” offering female or androgynous protagonists that are more active and less sexualized, the gaming industry is working to strike a balance that appeals to women on many levels. In the independent video community, there is more equality in collaborative efforts to include female personalities among larger production groups, as well as in gaming-related media created by women. The gaming and media industries are actively working to make a richer variety of content, and a culture more embracing of the female perspective will help this progress drastically. orn in Melbourne, Australia Laura currently lives next to the beautiful beaches of the Gold Coast where she loves swimming and running along the golden sand often she can be found sunbaking in a tiny bikini. Although having come from a successful career as a manager in the banking industry, she decided to take the chance and chase her dream in the entertainment industry as a model and has since graced the covers of magazines and starred in many television ads for which she is well recognised. searching for the best beaches around the world on my swimwear modelling shoots so far I’ve seen many amazing beaches, my favourites are the Maldives the water is the clearest I’ve ever seen, and Mexico also has another favourite beach of mine. One place on my bucket list I’d love to travel to is Bora Bora.
She is lucky to have travelled all over the world with her modelling and has spent a considerable amount of time in Europe, America and the Middle East and Mexico just to name a few. I feel traveling the world, experiencing other cultures is exciting and helped me to learn so much. I’ve met so many people that I had never imagined I would never have met had I not chased my dream. Meeting actors, musicians, sports champions and celebrities has been fun. My most memorable place in the world was climbing the Eiffel Tower in Paris last month it would have been romantic if I hadn’t been alone at the time. While traveling, I’m always looking for the best gyms around the world and so far my favourites have been Al Qasar in Dubai and Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. Keeping fit is one thing I’m passionate about. I’m constantly

ABOUT ME: I’m a huge animal lover so if you have a cute pet that’s a definite plus. I love adventure; I get a thrill from racing fast cars. I’ve partied at the Playboy mansion with P Diddy and even met Mike Tyson and many celebrities, but I can just as easily snuggle up and watch a good movie. At the end of the day, it’s all about good company, my friends are important to me.

Having studied nutrition & being a personal trainer, I know how to keep in shape & love training my clients. I love fine dining and when I travel I like to find the best restaurants so far the aquarium restaurant in The Atlantis Hotel Dubai is one of my favourites, I do love Nobu as well. I try to eat clean foods with high protein and low carbs if I’m trying to get extra toned for a shoot. That being said I’ll never turn down a glass of nice champagne.
LAURA’S BEAUTY REGIMEN: Beauty starts from the inside out I’ve noticed. I get visible results from looking after myself with vitamin supplements. My physique is maintained by working out regularly. I enjoy weights, boxing classes and love running. Aside from staying active and eating clean I also try to look after my skin with facials weekly. I enjoy being in the sun as long as I’m wearing a good sun cream. I’m a fan of La Mer skin products for my face, Chanel Cosmetics and regular visits to my beauty salon. I also love saunas, mani-pedis, and daily massages.

I’m sure by now all of you have heard that Captain America: Civil War has come to theaters on Friday, May 6th. The Marvel fans among us couldn’t be more excited! The highly anticipated feature film has an allstar cast lined up including; Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, and last but not least, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. The movie is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who are most recently known for their work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Captain America: The Winter Soldier proved to Marvel fans that even though the brothers’ background involves a lot of situation comedies, they were capable of understanding the elements to successfully compose an action movie. The brother’s worked alongside Screenplay writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who have a deeper background in Marvel movies such as; Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Thor: The Dark World. Mark Millar, a multi award-winning writer, wrote the US industry’s best-selling comic book of the past decade, Marvel’s Civil War, by which the movie is based on. I think that the previous Captain American movies made Captain out to be a bit easier going than in the comics. In the comics, he is much more strict, whereas in the movies he is a little more persuasive and is a tad bit more of a rule breaker, but for the most part, they follow the comic story line with a few tweaks here and there. The comics are much more detailed since there is no time limit to the series versus the amount of time given in a movie. Plus you have to cater to

your audience; comic book readers have a different emotional level than those from the movie goers. Movie goers need to adjust to a shorter time frame and still be able to create a connection with the characters. Comic readers have much more time and detailed and get emotionally involved with the characters. Captain America: Civil War will definitely live up to its hype for all of its enthusiastic fans. So far, it’s said to be the best Marvel movie to-date. There are so many characters involved in this picture including some new introductions. It may be a little disappointing to some comic lovers because the comics are much more intensified as compared to the movie. In the comics, the teams were more prepared for the war body-count wise, and in the movie, it is set up as a six-on six. I’m very interested to see how the Russo brothers portray the major comic event. Civil War is such an important piece of the Marvel franchise because along with introducing more characters it will open more doors for the Marvel universe to expand the movie franchise. For example, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will open doors to The Avengers: Infinity War. I don’t know what door Civil War will open, but I’m certain the story line will be fantastic and star to connect the dots with the other movies coming out. Well, I don’t know about you guys, but I’m ready to go see me some Chris Evans! How about you?!
