In this brochure you will find a programme of walks and activities for all ages and abilities, put together by Wyre Council and our partners to help you get outside, get active and connect with nature.

You can also view our full calendar of events online at www.wyre.gov.uk/greatoutdoors

If you would like this information in large print, please contact Wyre Council on 01253 891000, email greatoutdoors@wyre. gov.uk or visit us at the Civic Centre, Breck Road, Poulton-leFylde, FY6 7PU

Thank you to the amazing volunteers who make these events and activities possible

Our Great Outdoors programme simply would not be possible without our amazing team of volunteers!

Not only do volunteers give up their time to help out at Wyre Council events and on countryside ranger patrols, they also organise and run their own groups and events, from guided walks and beach cleans to conservation work party days and arts and crafts activities. Thank you to each and every person who has volunteered their time, skills, passion, dedication and knowledge.

volunteeryour...

Could you volunteer your passion and join the team?

If you have a passion for nature, ecology and heritage, like to meet new people or just love the great outdoors, we'd love to hear from you! To find out more visit www.wyre.gov.uk/volunteering or call our Volunteer and Community Engagement Officer on 01253 887504. You can also ask our friendly volunteers at Wyre Estuary Country Park or Rossall Point Tower and they'll be happy to provide more information, or email us at greatoutdoors@wyre.gov.uk.

Booking information

Many of the activities are free, while others have a small charge. This information is provided in the listing. No refunds will be offered if you are unable to attend an event you have booked. The listings will also show if the event or activity needs to be pre-booked. All Wyre Council events can be booked online at www.wyre.gov.uk/ greatoutdoors

Online bookings are subject to a small booking fee, which has been included in the activity costs you'll see in this brochure.

If you need help with bookings, you can email us at greatoutdoors@wyre. gov.uk or leave a message on 01253 887502 and we'll get back to you.

As Wyre Council is working in partnership with many organisations, you may be booking with one of these. Booking information for partner led events is shown in the listing.

Walking grades and terrain

To help you decide if a walk is suitable for you, we assign a grade to each one. The grade of the walk will indicate the level of difficulty and the expected terrain you may encounter. The duration of each walk is also listed in the description and may vary from 1 hour to over 4 hours.

All – relatively flat, surfaced paths, no stiles, suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and Trampers. May include road crossings.

Easy – relatively level ground, fields, lanes and tracks, possibly with some gentle slopes, stiles and/or livestock.

We cannot accommodate organised groups on the walks listed. If your group would like to take part in a bespoke coast and countryside activity, please email greatoutdoors@wyre.gov.uk

You may be asked to share your contact information for emergency and operational reasons by the organisation you book with. They will provide their GDPR Statement at the time of booking or on registering on the day of the activity. Wyre Council's GDPR statement is available at www.wyre.gov.uk/privacy

Booking a Tramper

If you would like to book a Wyre Council Tramper for use on a walk, email us at greatoutdoors@wyre.gov.uk in advance of booking to make sure a Tramper is available

If you wish to bring your own Tramper on a walk, please make your booking as normal and then contact us by email or phone to make us aware that your booking includes a Tramper.

Moderate – uneven ground, fields, lanes and tracks with some moderate slopes, expect stiles and/or livestock.

Hard – uneven ground, fields, lanes and tracks with some steeper climbs, expect stiles and/or livestock.

Very Hard - limited paths, rough walking, steeper climbs, expect stiles and/or livestock.

Tramper - walk suitable for using Trampers

Come prepared for all weather conditions! Walking shoes are always recommended.

Preparing for your walk or activity

It's always best to be prepared before you set out to a walk or activity! Make sure that you have the full details of where you are going and information on your planned activity. Thoroughly read any customer information provided to you before you attend.

Prepare for any weather and dress appropriately, not forgetting footwear! We all know British weather can be unpredictable - we can experience rain to sunshine and hail all in one day! Most activities take place in the countryside, where the ground can be slippy, muddy and uneven. Come prepared for all weather types, and wear suitable shoes and clothing.

A Leader will be available at the start of an activity whatever the weather. In extreme conditions a decision will be taken on the day by the leader of the group whether or not to cancel.

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to any guided walk or activity to register.

All finish times are approximate. Let the activity or walk leader know at the start if you need to return for a certain time.

If you have any health conditions, you should always check with your GP or health practitioner before you take part in our walks or activities. Make sure you bring any necessary or emergency medicine with you.

Always make the walk or activity leader aware if you have any relevant medical conditions they need to be aware of before the activity begins.

Don't get cut off! Mobile phones and devices don't always work in rural locations due to poor reception. Take a map or route plan with you in case you get lost and make sure you have the full details of your meeting point beforehand.

Check the tide times if you're at the coast or estuary! Find them online at www.wyre.gov.uk/beach-safety-guide

If you need help in an emergency dial 999 and ask for the relevant service –Police and then Coastguard if at sea or the seaside or Police and Mountain Rescue in rural and upland locations.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, unless clearly stated as a drop off activity.

Dogs are allowed on short walks but must be kept under close control at all times and on a lead when requested by the leader. You must clean up after your dog. We can't allow dogs on all walks due to the nature of the terrain, stiles and the need to avoid disturbance of wildlife and farm livestock.

If you can no longer attend, please let the organiser know as soon as possible. Refunds will not be given.

Wyre coast and countryside

A small team of Wyre Council staff, supported by many volunteers, helps provide access to nature across sites such as Wyre Estuary Country Park, the Wyre Coast, Rossall Point Tower, areas within the Forest of Bowland and a range of rural and urban green spaces. These locations offer a diverse mix of coast and countryside experiences for residents and visitors alike.

The team supports the council’s biodiversity duty of enhancing nature recovery, promoting climate resilience, and working with partners and communities to care for Wyre’s green and blue spaces. Through the Great Outdoors programme, walking festivals, volunteering, conservation work, education, and citizen science, we help people understand and care for local biodiversity and the impacts of climate change.

Rossall Point Tower, Fleetwood Coastal visitor centre run by volunteers, usually open for tours Thursdays to Sundays.

Respect, protect, enjoy!

The Countryside Code

With more people visiting the countryside than ever before, it's important that we all do our bit to look after our beautiful green spaces. We all have a responsibility to protect the countryside, now and for future generations!

Plan ahead, take a map, and remember that phone signals vary

Don't have BBQs or start fires in the countryside

Keep your dog on a lead (unless threatened by cattle)

Stick to the path and always leave gates as you found them

Get to know the signs and symbols used in the countryside, so you can find your way

Respect other users, local communities and wildlife

Leave no trace, take your litter and dog waste home

Enjoy the seaside responsibly

The Seaside Code

The seaside is a great place to visit and enjoy, but it can be dangerous if you don’t take care while you’re there. Make sure to plan ahead and be prepared - check online for tide times before you go, and know who to call in an emergency.

Watch the tides, and keep checking so you don't get cut off when the tide comes in. Don't follow the tide out.

If you see someone in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the coastguard

If you are in difficulty in the water, remember - float to live

Leave things where you find them, to protect wildlife. Don't remove stones and shells

Spare a thought for resting birds and keep your dog under control. Be aware of any restrictions in place, and clean up after your dog, too

Mind your step and be aware of soft sand and mud. Sand dunes are a fragile habitat

To read more about the Countryside Code, scan the QR code!

What's your move?

Spending time outside is one of the simplest and most enjoyable ways to boost your health and wellbeing. Whether it’s a gentle coastal wander, a countryside ramble or a wildlife-themed stroll, every step helps you feel better in body and mind. Wyre Moving More, Wyre Council's physical activity strategy, reminds us that movement doesn’t have to be complicated — it just has to start somewhere.

The Great Outdoors programme opens the door to nature, fresh air and shared experiences. Joining a guided walk or outdoor activity not only helps you stay active but also connects you with local landscapes, wildlife and like-minded people. These moments in nature can lift your mood, reduce stress and inspire new healthy habits. So whether you’re looking to improve your fitness, explore new places or enjoy the calm of being outdoors, Wyre offers countless opportunities to move more, feel better and embrace the adventure right on your doorstep.
