Safety First for Hunting Season Hunting season has arrived in the Cowboy State. No matter the species or method of harvest, it’s wise to know and follow a few safety tips to make sure that dream hunt doesn’t turn into a tragedy. “Our most common hunting-related accidents in Wyoming usually involve a vehicle — either loading firearms in or out of the vehicle or riding in the vehicle and accidentally bumping the trigger. The second most common involves obstacle crossing,” said Wyoming Game and Fish Department Hunter Education Coordinator Katie Simpson. It is legal to drive with a loaded firearm in Wyoming, but it isn’t always safe. Simpson said the best way to ensure hunters are maintaining safety with a firearm in a vehicle is to unload and case the firearm. As for being sure of your target and what’s beyond it, Simpson used an example near Cheyenne several years ago to demonstrate its importance. A hunter was pursuing pronghorn and took a shot at one atop a ridgeline. The bullet missed the pronghorn, and traveled about a mile and hit a car driving along Interstate 80. No one was hurt, but the bullet broke a window. Hunters should also be aware of seasons happening simultaneous to theirs. There are times when big game archery and rifle hunters may be in the field at the same time. People hunting big or trophy game animals during an open firearm season are legally required to wear fluorescent orange or pink in the field, regardless of the weapon they are hunting with. Always remember the four rules of firearm safety: Treat every weapon as if it were loaded. • Muzzle control. • Know your target, and what’s beyond. • Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. Other safety tips from Simpson include: Always tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to return. • Bring more equipment than you think you’ll need, including more layers of clothing, food and water. •Be aware of hypothermia and its symptoms. • If you get lost, stay put — whether on foot or in a vehicle. This is especially true if you’ve told someone where you’re at. • Report any poaching or wildlife violations to any of the following: 1-877-WGFD-TIP. • Text keyword WGFD and a message to TIP411 (847-411). • Submit a tip online at https://wgfd.wyo.gov/stop-poaching.

2026 Wyoming Game & Fish Hunt Forecast Casper Region

Pronghorn - Pronghorn populations in the Casper Region have generally increased in recent years. Herds around Casper are at or near population objectives, while herds from Douglas to Lusk to Sundance remain below objective but are increasing. Following declines from 2018-23 caused by harsh winters, poor fawn survival and disease, improved fawn production and mild winters have helped populations recover. Fawn production was exceptional in 2024 and near average in 2025, while adult overwinter survival has remained high. A few more any-antelope and doe/fawn licenses were issued in 2026. Hunters should experience average to high harvest success due to strong buck ratios and conservative license issuance. Exceptional drought conditions in 2026 have concentrated pronghorn around water sources and agricultural fields. Mule Deer - Mule deer populations have remained stable or increased slightly but remain well below management goals. Poor survival caused by drought, habitat changes, disease and predation continues to limit population growth. Buck ratios remain high in most herds, and hunters in limited quota areas and on private land should experience good success. Public-land hunters in General License areas have also seen improved success in recent years, although seasons remain conservative. Limited quota Hunt Areas (HAs) 10, 22, 34 and 89 generally produce older bucks with modest trophy potential. Above-average fawn production in 2024 and 2025 has helped stabilize or slightly increase most herds, but several more years of good production and survival will be needed to substantially improve populations. Within the region, HAs 1-14 and 21 are a priority for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) sampling, while HA 34 requires mandatory CWD sampling for all license types. White-tailed Deer - White-tailed deer populations suffered substantial Epizootic Hemorrhage Disease (EHD) related die-offs in 2021 and, to a lesser extent, 2022. Numbers began rebounding in 2023, but EHD was detected again throughout much of the region in 2025, with HA 65 impacted most heavily. Several white-tailed deer license quotas in central/eastern Wyoming were reduced for the 2026 season. Most white-tailed deer in central and eastern Wyoming occur on private land. The Black Hills are the notable exception, where populations are increasing but remain below objective. Hunters should expect moderate success, particularly on public land in the Black Hills. Within the region, HAs 1-14 and 21 are a priority for CWD sampling, while HA 34 requires mandatory sampling for all license types. Elk - Elk populations remain above objective throughout the Casper Region, allowing hunting seasons to remain liberal in most areas. The region continues to offer excellent bull-hunting opportunities, with many limited quota areas providing high harvest success and older age-class bulls. Type 1 and 2 "any elk" hunters should see good success in 2026. Hunters pursuing younger bulls with Type 2 and 3 licenses in HAs 113, 117 and 122 should also find decent opportunities, but should check regulations for specific season dates and bull restrictions. Antlerless elk hunting should again be good, although public-land hunter numbers can reduce success compared to private land. The most notable change is the Area 7, Type 2 license is now valid for any elk. Five most common hunting violations

CHEYENNE - Every year as hunting seasons get underway, Game and Fish offices receive numerous questions about various game laws and what hunters can and cannot do while in the field. Some of the questions come from new residents who are not familiar with Wyoming law and how Wyoming laws may differ from their previous residence. Most Wyoming laws are a matter of common sense, but there are some laws and regulations that are violated more frequently than others. Following is a listing of five common violations that crop up every hunting season. Failure to Tag - Every big and trophy game license has a carcass coupon attached. And each license has the tagging instructions printed on the coupon. When the animal is killed, simply detach the tag from the license and date the carcass coupon by cutting out the entire day and month of the kill. Sign the license and attach to the carcass before leaving the site of the kill. The coupon may be removed during transportation to prevent its loss, but it must be in possession of the person accompanying the carcass. You must detach, sign, and date the tag to comply with the tagging regulation. If any one of these is omitted, then a violation has occurred. Shooting from a Vehicle - Simply put, it is illegal to shoot any wildlife except predatory animals from any motorized vehicle. This includes off-road vehicles and snowmobiles. To legally fire a weapon, a person must be out of the vehicle. Hunters holding a handicapped hunter permit are exempt from this requirement. Shooting from a Road - It is illegal to shoot or attempt to kill any wildlife from any public road or highway. No person shall fire any firearm from, along, or across any public road or highway. A public road is defined as any road that is open to vehicular traffic to the public. The road surface, the area between fences on a fenced public road or highway, and the area 30 feet perpendicular to the road surface on unfenced public roads is considered the public road. Two-track trails on public land are not defined as public roads. Failure to Retain Evidence of Gender - Many Wyoming licenses require the taking of a specific sex of animal. There are also season dates in different hunt areas when only a specific sex of animal can be taken. To satisfy the proof of gender requirement the regulation states: “in areas where the taking of any big game animal is restricted to a specific sex of animal, either the visible external sex organs, head, or antlers shall accompany the animal as a whole or edible portion thereof.” Trespass - Wyoming law states that no person shall enter private land to hunt, fish, or trap without written permission from the landowner or person in charge of the property. The license must bear the signature of the landowner or agent of the landowner on whose property the hunting is taking place or legitimate proof that permission to hunt has been granted. It is the responsibility of hunters to know if the land is public or private. To assist in this, the Bureau of Land Management has maps showing public and private lands. Maps can be obtained from the BLM by calling 307- 775-6256. Many Wyoming sporting goods businesses also carry BLM maps for their local area. For hunters with GPS units a micro SD chip is available from the Game and Fish, 307-777-4600, that shows land status and hunter location. Perfect for the whole family! Easy Pan Fried Pheasant Breasts 4 Skinless Pheasant Breasts 1 Tbsp. Butter 1 Tbsp. Olive Oil 1 tsp. Salt 1/2 tsp. Pepper 1 peeled and chopped Garlic Clove 5.5 oz. Pancetta Cubed 9 oz. Sliced Chestnut Mushrooms 1/4 Cup White Wine 1/2 Cup Heavy Cream 1 tsp. Wholegrain Mustard 1 Tbsp. chopped Parsley 1.

Heat the butter and oil in a frying pan until foaming. Season the pheasant breasts with salt and pepper then place in the pan and cook for 5 minutes. Turn the pheasant breasts over and cook for a further 4 mintues until golden brown (check with a sharp knife to see if they are cooked through). Remove the pheasant to a plate to rest. Put the chopped garlic, sliced mushrooms and pancetta in the frying pan on medium-high heat and cook for 3-4 minutes until the mushrooms are tender. Pour in the white wine and let the majority of the liquid evaporate off. Stir in the cream, wholegrain mustard and parsley and simmer on a low heat for 2-3 minutes. Return the pheasant breasts to the pan and warm through for 3-4 minutes before serving.

Garlic Butter Elk Steak Bites 2 lbs. Steak Cut into Bites Salt and Ground Black Pepper to taste (consider using a lot of lemon pepper here) 1 Tbsp. Oil 1 stick of Salted Butter 4 cloves minced Garlic 2 Tbsp. Chopped Cilantro (it adds way more flavor than traditional parsley) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Cube steak into 1 inch cubes. Heat oil in large pan. Add steak and sear both sides. While steak is cooking, combine garlic, cilantro, salt and pepper in a bowl. Set aside. Once steak bites are adequately seared, add a stick of butter. Cook until butter thickens a bit. Add garlic mixture and cook until garlic has browned. Remove from heat and serve!

Cheyenne Police Detectives are seeking information about a felony theft that occurred at VFW Post 1881 located at 2816 East 7th Street. A white cargo trailer containing military memorabilia was stolen from the property. The trailer held medals, including Purple Hearts and a Medal of Honor, plaques, flags, uniforms and other personal items belonging to veterans. Surveillance footage shows a gold passenger vehicle arrived at the location, backed up to the trailer and towed it away.
