Students Would Benefit from a City Rec Center

Cheyenne has seen steady growth over the past few years, building a diverse community that spans from young children to older adults. It also has seen new developments pop up in every corner of town. Despite this growth, the city has very few dedicated indoor spaces for teenagers and young adults to socialize, play sports, or participate in recreational activities. For many years, residents and community leaders have advocated for the construction of a recreational center in Cheyenne. A well-designed recreational center would not only serve as a place for primary and secondary schools to host sporting events and activity programs, but it would also become a vital resource for the entire community. Additionally, it could attract visitors from surrounding areas, boost local opportunities for Cheyenne.

facilities. This accessibility would strengthen school programs, foster school spirit, and offer students more opportunities to engage in athletics and teambuilding activities.

Public Schools Chronicle

Beyond health and education, a recreational center would serve as a space for community bonding. Families and friends could gather for events, classes, and competitions, creating stronger social connections. Community programs could include youth camps, senior fitness classes, or cultural events, ensuring that the center serves all members of Cheyenne. Additionally, such a center could attract regional events, drawing visitors to Cheyenne and helping local businesses thrive. It would also be more efficient because it would a newer updated facility that meets more modern-day codes.

A recreational center is more than just a building with a gym and a swimming pool—it is a space for promoting health, education, and community connection. One of the most significant benefits of rec centers is their positive impact on both physical and mental health. Today, many teenagers and adults spend long hours sitting at home, often looking at their screens rather than getting any physical activity and socialization. A local recreation center would provide opportunities for sports, exercise classes, and other physical activities, encouraging people of all ages to stay active. Studies show that regular exercise reduces stress, improves mood, and enhances overall physical well-being, making the facility a key resource for the community.

A recreational center would also greatly benefit Cheyenne’s schools. Currently, hosting sporting events often requires traveling long distances to larger venues, which can be both time-consuming and costly. A central recreational center would provide more space for school teams to practice, compete, and hold tournaments, while also accommodating larger crowds without overwhelming small school

Building a recreational center in Cheyenne isn’t just a convenience, but also an investment in the health, education, and social well-being of the community. Providing accessible space for exercise, school events, and community activities, a recreational center would enhance quality of life for residents, and foster stronger connections among our community, and even bring visitors from outside the city. Cheyenne’s growth calls for modern facilities that reflect the need to develop community, and a rec center is a step toward meeting those needs.

Seasonal Closure

The City of Cheyenne closed the southern portion of Kiwanis Community Park, located off East Pershing Boulevard on April 1 for seasonal wildlife protection. The southern section will reopen to the public on July 15. The closed area contains a large pond which provides valuable habitat for many species of wildlife and is especially important to many species of waterfowl. Spring through early summer is a critical time of year for these species as they are nesting and raising their young. The northern portion of the site will remain open to the public from sunrise to sunset and is accessible from the park’s main parking lot. Pets must be kept on leash and pet waste picked up and disposed of. Visitors are also asked to pack out all trash and to make sure they and their pets do not harass the wildlife or nearby livestock.

Immigration: An American Story

The Laramie County Library, 2200 Pioneer Avenue, is presenting until April 12, a pop-up panel exhibition by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, an exhibit of documents, maps and images to tell selected stories of those who came to America, some by force and others by choice in search of a better future for themselves and later generations. The United States has often been called “a nation of immigrants” - an oversimplification. American Indians, were present before the nation’s founding and hundreds of thousands of Africans were brought to these shores in chains. Many Americans are descended from immigrants who fled religious or ethnic persecution, war and economic hardship. This exhibit is on the 3rd floor.
