On behalf of Student Council, welcome to Wycliffe College. As the academic year begins, you might be surprised to encounter the individualism that exists within theological education. In the midst of discussions, deadlines, and discernment, it is not uncommon to become consumed by concerns that are centered on the self. What are my grades? What deadlines do I need to meet? How can I afford this? I am so tired! These concerns are valid and important, however, each of us has a responsibility to place them within their proper context: Christian community. In Christian community, as each of us experiences different setbacks and hardships at different times, we must ignore the temptation to embrace isolation. Jean Vanier, in his book, Community and Growth, prompts us to acknowledge that “it is only when we stand up, with all our failings and sufferings, and try to support others rather than withdraw into ourselves, that we can fully live the life of community.” (to be continued on the next page) PAGE ONE

(continued) Three years ago, as I was completing my first year at Wycliffe College, a classmate of mine, Kayi Nakazwe, now a Wycliffe alumnus, advised me to recognize the rhythms of the Wycliffe community, and to find rest in them. Now, as I complete my final year at Wycliffe, I passionately echo Kayi’s words of wisdom. Whether you are on campus every day, once a week, or only on special occasions, you are invited to enter into the rhythms of this community. Experience rest in the rhythms as we gather daily (morning prayer, lunch, evening prayer), weekly (Eucharist, and community meals), and seasonally (the Fall retreat, Christmas dinner and talent show, or the end of the year “At Home” event). See you there! May you find rest in the Wycliffe rhythm. May we be mutually encouraged by each other's faith. === Need a time of rest and connection? The Wycliffe Fall Retreat is happening this Saturday on Sept 7th, and it is not too late to sign up. On Thursday, Sept 5th, there will be a Spouse Wine and Cheese reception (5:00-6:30 p.m.) specifically for spouses of Wycliffe students. All new and returning spouses of students are invited and encouraged to take this opportunity to leave their children with their partners and meet new friends and reconnect with old friends at this gathering with Fawna and Stephen.
FROM THE REGISTRAR’S OFFICE If you have been awarded a Wycliffe Bursary the money will be paid to U of T against your tuition balance in midSeptember.
You must set up a U of T email account and remember to check it at least weekly. TST, U of T and the College will only communicate through the U of T email.
Students here on campus have been assigned a mail box and you should look for the box under your assigned number (literally your box is located beneath the number!) and again remember to check it each day you are here on campus. Please pay your fees soon, either in full or part to ensure that you will not be financially cancelled (FINCA'd) by the U of T. There is a late penalty fee of $100 if we have to reregister you after the FINCA date (Sept. 27).
All Basic Degree students have been assigned a faculty advisor to assist with course selections All MDiv and MTSD students must complete a criminal record check. Please coordinate with the assistant registrar, Jeffrey Hocking, to complete this step.

AT THE FRONT DESK The front desk will be an important location for your time

Commuters: Students who live outside the GTA are able to stay overnight at Wycliffe in shared spaces. Additional costs apply for linens and overnight parking space. Commuter rooms include a complimentary breakfast on weekdays and brunch on Saturdays. As we have limited accommodations, these are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Meal Tickets: Breakfast is served in the Refectory on Mon-Fri Continental breakfast and coffee begins at 7:00 a.m. Hot breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. Breakfast service ends at 9:30 a.m. (Saturday brunch is served from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) Lunch is served Mon-Fri from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Dinner is served Mon-Sat from 6:00-7:30 p.m. The menu for the week will be posted on the bulletin board and online Monday mornings. Purchase your meal tickets at the front desk.
Printing: Students can print black-and-white only at a low cost. Files must be on a USB drive or emailed to the front desk. Parking: Few parking permits are available to students living outside the GTA. Speak to the front desk for details.
Lockers are available for rent in the College basement for Wycliffe students only. You may rent a locker for the whole

From Founders’ Chapel we head into the Refectory for Community Dinner which starts at 6:00 p.m. Please sign up for the Community Dinner at the Front Desk before 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Your family is welcome to gather together with residents, students, faculty and staff for Community Dinner. On Sunday, September 15 at 11:00 a.m., there will be an annual Founders’ Day Eucharist service at St. James’ Cathedral which celebrates the founding of Wycliffe College. All students and families are invited to attend. The preacher this year will be Dr. Annette Brownlee, Chaplain of Wycliffe College

PUBLIC EVENTS In addition to events run by the Student Council, Wycliffe College also hosts and sponsors a series of public events to engage the wider Church and our society. Wycliffe students are encouraged to participate in these conversations concerning theology and its interaction with societal and cultural issues. Principal’s Dinner with Alister McGrath

Toronto Children’s Ministry Conference
Dr. Alister McGrath will be at Wycliffe College for the Principal’s Dinner on Tuesday, Sept 24th, addressing the topic of “Unity for the Kingdom.” On Sept 25th, he will join panelists Michael Ramsden and Barth Netterfield at Knox Presbyterian Church for a discussion on Einstein and his religious views.
On the last Friday of every month, Theology Pub Night provides an ideal location to grab a cold beverage, mingle with others, and join in a spirited conversation on a range of topics. We start with a time of socializing and then move into an interview with someone in the know about the topic and then open the floor for questions and answers.
The Toronto Children's Ministry Conference is a gathering of people who are dedicated to the spiritual growth of children—parents, church volunteers, ministry leaders, and anyone who has a passion for ministering to children. This year’s conference will take place on Saturday, Nov 2nd at Tyndale University College and Seminary.
