ne of the most modern museums in every aspect is housed in a masterpiece building constructed in 19891993 by Kyriakos Krokos, and it combines elements of modernism and byzantine architectural tradition. It has exhibition areas of about 3,000 sq.m. hosting exhibits mainly from Northern Greece and Thessalonica itself, the most important town of the Byzantine empire after Constantinople. Its permanent exhibition hosts 2,900 items promoting byzantine art and the faces of the byzantine society from

the end of late antiquity (3rd -4th c. AD) to the fall of Constantinople, as well as the survival of the byzantine culture to the 19th century. Two large private collections have been donated to the museum (orthodox religious engravings and items from prehistory to post-byzantine years) that also allow the visitor to perceive the origins, the motives and the directions of each collector in the making of his collection. The tour closes with the presentation of the course followed by an ancient item from its excavation to its maintenance, study and exhibition. COOL HOTELS & VILLAS
