Membership at Pennant Hills

A Welcome to Pennant Hills Golf Club

Australian golfing great, Kel Nagle, once held the course record at Pennant Hills winning the NSW PGA in 1952 and carding a 63 in a four round total of 270. He later described Pennant Hills as one of the finest park land golf courses in Australia. That is high praise, not surprisingly some might say, but Kel was known for his sincerity and as a straight shooter both in his communications and hitting a ball.

Gary Player later said of Kel that “He was not very long off the tee but hit the ball extremely straight and was a wonderful putter”. A sentiment supported by Arnold Palmer who similarly said … “he was not long off the tee, but he made up for it by being a very accurate player. He hit it straight, was very precise with his game and was one of the great putters of all time”.

We can only wonder what Kel and his good friend; Pennant Hills icon Tony Gresham would say today as the design work of the Player Group has shaped a magnificent remodeling of all greens on the 100 year old lay out of Pennant Hills.

Tony was to equal Kel’s course record when he also carded a 63 under medal conditions in 1968 which was the year of his selection in the Australian team to play in the Eisenhower Cup at Royal Melbourne.

It is a strange quirk of fate, Player and Nagle coming together on this Sydney course given that Kel was known for his ability to narrate a shot by shot account through all 18 holes of his agonising 1965 US Open playoff loss (71 to 74) to the legendary South African often referred to as the Black Knight.

Gary Player won 7 Australian Opens, Gary Player Design has been involved in over 400 golf course construction projects in 36 countries spanning five continents with their three different design brands, one of which is the Black Knight Design which is now proudly pinned to Pennant Hills Golf Course. This project is the Player Group’s first assignment in Australia. It is primarily the work of Phil Jacobs, a surveyor by trade, who was the principal course architect for Gary Player’s design company. Phil has been responsible for projects like the Links Course at the Fancourt Resort and the various revisions and updates to the Gary Player course at Sun City.

Pennant Hills enjoys a glorious undulating acreage; it is a heritage listed Golf Course conserving significant Blackbutt and Bluegums of a remnant forest above Devlins Creek in a naturalistic landscape with intact elements of cultural planting. The amazing transformation of this A Grade course is fashioned on Phil’s remarkable blueprint and enhanced by the team that is making it happen. This includes the Course Superintendent Michael Hedger, our resident Professional Neil Rolfe and the doyen of shapers, Craig Brown. When complete, the project will have cost some $5 million. It is being developed over a three year period, the first 9 holes being in play mid 2026 with a further 3 holes before the end of the year. Members and visitors are enjoying the juxtaposition of the old and the new during the construction period. Completion is expected in 2027.

Membership of a golf course is one thing; membership of a vibrant golf club is another. A club without a history is a club without a soul.

Pennant Hills has a deep and eventful history that is well recorded and has carefully nurtured a sustainable culture and personality. Following the formation of the club on this site in 1923 there have been four books written to document and preserve its history. In this brochure we have included examples of the camaraderie that is evident in our members at some of the regular social functions. I hope this gives you a feel for this wonderful golf club and prompts you to consider joining.

Admission to Membership of the club is normally by introduction of an existing Member; however, those interested in joining, and unknown to a Member should contact the General Manager whose details are provided below.

A warm invitation is offered to golfers of all types to make application for Membership. RSVP through an existing member, by email or phone whenever you are ready.

Looking forward to receiving your application.

Yours sincerely,

Our course is the only one in Australia designed by the renowned Player Design Group, whose prestigious team is internationally recognised for excellence in golf architecture. The magnificent tree-lined fairways provide both challenge and serenity for golfers of all levels.

In an era when many Clubs face increasing pressure from rising costs, prolonged dry periods and tightening water restrictions, maintaining course presentation at the standard Members expect is no small undertaking. At Pennant Hills Golf Club we have taken deliberate steps to safeguard the condition of our course for generations to come.

Our on-site Water Reclamation Plant has the capacity to produce up to 500,000 litres of water each day, providing a reliable and sustainable supply for irrigation. In addition, our access to harvested water from the NorthConnex Tunnel offers a further 400,000 litres per day, reinforcing our long-term water security. This significant infrastructure investment ensures that even in challenging seasons, our fairways remain resilient, our greens true and our course presented in the manner befitting a Club of proud tradition.

Men’s Competition is held on Monday afternoons, while social golf is available across several afternoons and after 1 pm on Thursdays.
