Belonging or becoming. We all get to decide.

surprisingly entwined they were by similar elements and core values.

Sometimes it feels safer to belong than to dive into the unknown and dare to become. But surely, we can have both?

Each story seemed to hold a story within it. A moment, an experience or a personal encounter that triggered change. A reason that propelled each person forward and inspired them to become a Changemaker.

Changemakers of our Time is one of my favourite editions of the year, and it never fails to astound me just how much incredible homegrown talent we have living right here in regional Queensland. From a 17-year-old Formula One prodigy to a young family turning personal trauma into a huge community event, the stories within these pages are wonderfully diverse. In the business field, it is such an honour to share the stories of success from local business owners. As I read through each story, vastly different in industry, background and offering, I was struck by how

I also noticed a shared dissatisfaction with ‘what’s always been’. A desire to deviate from the norm, find a better way, step outside the box and dare to think differently. What do you see that could be done differently? Lastly, I noticed the running theme, the central purpose of people’s life journeys, was often connection. To help others. To be of service. And I found that truly beautiful. Whoever we are, and whatever path life has taken us on, we can all be Changemakers in our own lives. It might be inspiring our children to be kind, picking up a piece of litter, choosing to smile and brush off a nasty comment, or simply asking how we can contribute to making the world a little better.

SHIFTING INTO HISTORY Rising Star Jure Portelli

J

ude Portelli’s impressive sporting career began with simple laps around a small gokart track near Whitsunday Coast Airport.

Now, the Airlie Beach teenager has followed her dream all the way to Japan and into the history books. At just 17, Jure Portelli has become both the first Australian and the first female to graduate from Honda Racing School, proving that its talent that determines how far a driver can go. “I don’t think about it being the first Australian and the first girl,” she said. “No matter where you come from - or your gender, or anything like that - if you can get there, then that shows a lot.” Jure moved from Melbourne to Airlie Beach in 2012, but her motorsport journey did not begin until a decade later, when her father bought a second-hand go-kart from Facebook Marketplace. “I did the first race and I was like, ‘Wow, this is heaps of fun,’” she said. “I don’t remember where I placed or how I actually went in the race, but I just remember really enjoying it. “Then we just kind of continued to enter the local go-kart meets, and eventually I started to get competitive and started winning.” After establishing herself in go-kart competition,

she made the leap into a formula car through the Ferrari Driver Academy’s Rising Stars program in 2023.

advanced through multiple selection stages at Suzuka to become one of eight drivers chosen from 30.

It was a major step up, but one that confirmed she was on the right track.

The achievement didn’t come without its challenges, as Jure had to move away from home and her family for 6 months.

“After that program my family and I (specifically me) decided I want to make this into a career,” Jure said.

While a daunting experience, it was one she labeled as necessary.

Formula V rounds in Victoria gave Jure her next taste of competition, but an even bigger test waited overseas.

“It was a very foreign experience... not a lot of people get the opportunity to do that, especially so young,” she said.

In 2025, she travelled to Japan and lined up at the iconic Fuji Speedway. In her first Vita race, she finished on the podium.

“But I was more than happy to do that to be able to be a part of the Honda Racing School.”

Yet early success did not guarantee regular time behind the wheel. Unable to race as often as she wanted, Jure turned her attention to everything she could control, pushing through physical conditioning, mental preparation and countless hours in the simulator to ready herself for when she would get track time. As her ambitions grew, Jure realised the next step in her career would take her beyond Australia’s borders. Drawn by the opportunities and rich motorsport culture overseas, she began looking for a pathway to take her to the next level. Her dedication earned her a place at Japan’s prestigious Honda Racing School, where she

During the course, Jure trained alongside professional drivers, combining intensive track sessions, physical training and data analysis while being assessed both on and off the circuit. “You never really know what they’re looking out for,” she said. “They’re always critiquing you on everything, not just your driving, but how you behave off track: your manners, how well you can communicate with the engineers and the instructors, time management...” With one historic milestone behind her, Jure is looking forward to her next step to becoming a formula 1 driver. “I’m always just working towards the next opportunity,” she said.

FISHING FOR A CAUSE

Brooke Galloway Photography

O

with the Stonka Fishing Challenge

nce a year at Cape Gloucester, fishing enthusiasts converge for a contest that gives back: The Stonka Fishing Challenge.

Across four days, anglers, families and supporters come together for a prize-filled weekend of fishing and festivities. This year, the fourth Stonka Challenge saw the event reach a new high. With 1,300 registrations, around 700 more than its first year, the weekend brought packed beaches, thousands of dollars raised for charity and an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 people through across the four days. For founders Steven and Stacey Cresswell, the weekend was another sign of just how far the event has come, and how much higher it continues to set the bar. “Bigger and better is sort of our motto,” Steven said. “We want to make sure each year is one to remember and one to book.” But beyond the record crowds and fundraising totals, Steven said some of the weekend’s best moments came from watching children get involved. “The kids brought in some stonkers and they got really involved in all the games and stuff like that,” Steven said. “That was the best moment from the weekend.”

The event was born out of a difficult time, when the family faced the kind of news that changes everything. Stacey had been sick for a while when in 2019 she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, after doctors found a football-sized tumour in her chest. At the time, the couple had a newborn baby, a three-year-old child, a mortgage and their Moranbah business to keep afloat, while Stacey was transferred to hospital in Townsville for treatment. “It was pretty bleak at the time,” Steven said. “The doctors told us things weren’t looking too promising.” Despite the odds, Steven was given a glimmer of hope when Leukemia House approached with an offer of an apartment across from the hospital. While hesitant to accept the offer at first, the foundation’s persistence paid off, giving the family a chance to stay close to Stacey in a time where she needed them most. “Having that support was massive to getting us through this rough time,” Steven said. “I honestly don’t know how we would have managed without it.” Stacey eventually came out the other side, leaving the family with a deep sense of relief. “We’re one of the lucky ones, we’ve heard a lot of

stories about people that weren’t as fortunate as us,” Steven said. Even with their own ordeal behind them, the desire to help Leukaemia House and other families facing cancer has never gone away. That was where the Stonka Fishing Challenge was born: as a chance to return the favour. And boy have they. Over the years, funds raised through the event have helped provide air fryers, washing machines, lighting upgrades and a new security system for Townsville’s Leukemia House. The committee has also donated patient care hampers filled with comfort items and supported the annual Christmas party for the families in the midst of treatment. They’ve also organised some special days, like time on the water and a two-night stay at Cape Gloucester Resort for a young boy fighting the disease. For Steven and Stacey, that gratitude extends to the anglers, sponsors, crew, Leukaemia House and the wider community who have helped them through, not only survived one of the hardest chapters in their lives but have continued to support them as they turn that experience into something that gives back. “We’re just so grateful to our sponsors, our crew and the community that gets behind us,” Steven said. www.corelife.com.au | 11

11TH ANNUAL GOLF DAY RAISES OVER $75,100 FOR LOCAL BENEFICIARIES!

A

day on the green has once again delivered a major result for the Mackay community, with the 11th Annual M&P Services – Key Solutions Group Charity Golf Day raising an impressive $75,152, surpassing last year’s total of $75,000!

“It doesn’t go through head offices in Brisbane, Sydney or anywhere else. It’s directly supporting local charities, which is why we love what we do.”

The event has grown from humble beginnings into one of Mackay’s leading charity golf days, bringing together local businesses, sponsors and the community to raise vital funds for local charities.

“To everybody who has supported this event, we thank you very much!”

Mayor Greg Williamson praised M&P Services Managing Director Max Lamb Jr and his team for the event’s continued success. “This is the 11th annual charity golf day, and we’ve got to say to Max and his team, what a great job,” Mayor Williamson said. “The first round, 11 years ago, raised $6,000. Last year, it raised $75,000, and already more than $425,000 has gone to Mackay charities throughout the years. “This is Mackay’s leading charity golf day, and getting from $6,000 in that first year to where it is today is an outstanding achievement.” For Max Lamb Jr, the day was about more than golf, with the event providing an opportunity to give back to the community that M&P Services has supported through its operations across Mackay and the greater region for 40 years. With now more than $425,000 raised over the past decade, this is one community tradition that’s well and truly on par. A strong focus of the event has been keeping funds local, with money raised going directly to the supported charities and organisations. “Every dollar we raise goes straight to the bank accounts of these local charities,” Max Jr said.

Max Jr also extended a major thank you to the many supporters, businesses, organisations, sponsors, volunteers and participants who have helped make the Charity Golf Day possible year after year, with their support again playing a vital role in the success of the 2026 event. For 40 years, M&P Services has been part of the fabric of Mackay and the greater region, and giving back to the community has remained central to that legacy. The annual Charity Golf Day has grown into one of the company’s most meaningful ways of turning community spirit into tangible support, bringing together local businesses, organisations and individuals to make a difference.

The following Charities and Organisations have been supported by this years golf day:

The team at M&P Services extend a massive thanks to the following Major Sponsors:

DR HANY AZIZ PRINCIPLE DENTIST/CEO

BEING A CHANGEMAKER OF OUR TIME Photo credit: Alyce Holzy 16 | www.corelife.com.au

CHANGEMAKER OF OUR TIME

S

ome people adapt to change. Others question it, shape it and become part of what comes next.

For Dr Hany Aziz, founder and principal dentist of Oral Health & Beyond Collective, being a changemaker has never been about being different for the sake of it. It is about having the courage to ask a simple but powerful question:

“Can we do better?”

NovoGen. Technology is a tool. Knowledge gives it purpose. Listening gives it direction. People give it meaning. The Moments That Change Us Every changemaker has a moment that reminds them why challenging convention matters.

Across more than 25 years in dentistry, that question has helped shape Dr Hany’s approach to his profession, his patients and the future of healthcare in regional Queensland.

For Dr Hany, one of those moments came more than a decade ago when a three-and-a-half-year-old boy was brought to the practice after his family had spent years searching for answers.

Curious by nature and never entirely comfortable with the idea of “this is how it has always been done,” Dr Hany has built his career around looking beyond the obvious — exploring the connections between the mouth, breathing, oral function, development and a person’s broader wellbeing.

The child could not speak and relied on liquid nutrition.

“I’ve always been someone who doesn’t fit neatly into a box,” Dr Hany said. “I’m progressive in my thinking. I believe we should keep learning, keep questioning and remain open to a better way forward.” Change Begins With Curiosity More than 15 years ago, an interest in clear aligners sparked something much bigger. What began with an exploration of tooth alignment developed into questions about why teeth and jaws develop the way they do. That curiosity opened the door to a broader consideration of muscles, oral function, jaw development and breathing patterns. For Dr Hany, it changed the conversation from simply asking “What are we treating?” to “Why is this happening in the first place?” That shift in thinking became central to his philosophy. “Prevention is better than cure,” he said. “When we recognise concerns earlier, we have an opportunity to understand what is happening and consider what may support that person’s development and long-term health.” Looking Beyond the Teeth The opening of the Mackay clinic in 2016 represented more than business growth. It created a place where Dr Hany could continue developing a broader approach to dental care — supporting patients through different stages of life, from infancy through childhood and into adulthood.

The experience and the changes Dr Hany observed following care had a profound impact on him, creating a connection that has continued well beyond the clinic. More than a decade later, Dr Hany maintains a lifelong relationship with the patient and his family — a bond that remains a powerful reminder of why this work matters. “Seeing the changes in that little boy made me realise how important it was to keep asking questions,” Dr Hany recalled. “It reinforced for me that sometimes we need to look beyond what is immediately in front of us.” It became more than a memorable patient encounter. It became a defining moment. A reminder that behind every appointment is a person. Behind every symptom is a story. And sometimes, behind one unanswered question is an opportunity to change the direction of a life.

A Changemaker Of Our Time Our world is changing rapidly. Technology is transforming healthcare. Patients are becoming better informed. Different health disciplines are increasingly recognising the value of collaboration, while our understanding of the connections within the human body continues to evolve. Dr Hany believes healthcare professionals have a responsibility to evolve with it. Not to abandon what has worked — but to remain brave enough to question what could work better. For him, the future of dentistry is not simply about treating teeth. It is about connection.

Today, Oral Health & Beyond Collective is guided by connection, care, professionalism, proactivity and commitment.

Connecting oral health with function. Connecting breathing with development. Connecting professionals with one another. Connecting technology with human care. And, above all, connecting with the person sitting in the chair.

But for Dr Hany, one principle remains fundamental: listening.

That is where meaningful change begins.

“One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of listening,” he said. “People tell you far more than their symptoms. When you take the time to understand their story, you begin to see a much bigger picture.”

“Being a changemaker isn’t about believing you have all the answers,” Dr Hany said. “It’s about remaining curious enough to keep searching for them.”

A patient may arrive concerned about grinding their teeth, discomfort, alignment, feeding, oral function or breathing. The symptom may be what starts the conversation — but Dr Hany believes it should not necessarily be where the conversation ends.

Keep learning. Keep listening. Keep questioning. And never become so comfortable with convention that you stop imagining what could be possible.

“Sometimes what we see first is only one piece of the puzzle,” he explained. “My role is to ask questions, investigate and try to understand what may be contributing to it.”

Progress Requires Courage Being a changemaker also means being prepared to explore ideas before they become commonplace. Dr Hany has been at the forefront of incorporating laser technology into his approach to dentistry since 2013. His early adoption of laser treatment reflects a philosophy that has followed him throughout his career — to keep exploring, keep learning and embrace technology where it can broaden the possibilities of patient care.

After more than 25 years, his motivation remains remarkably simple:

What does being a changemaker mean to you? “Being a changemaker means having the courage to remain curious. It means continuing to learn, listening to the people around you and being prepared to challenge conventional thinking when there may be a better way forward. Change doesn’t always begin with a grand idea. Sometimes it begins with one person, one conversation and one question that nobody thought to ask. For me, being a changemaker is about leaving something better than you found it — and inspiring others to believe they can do the same.”

CHALLENGE CONVENTION. INSPIRE POSSIBILITY. CREATE MEANINGFUL CHANGE.

For Dr Hany, being a changemaker means not waiting for innovation to become conventional. It means being willing to explore what comes next.

Oral Health & Beyond Collective

Over the years, Dr Hany has continued to introduce new approaches, services and technologies into his practices while expanding his knowledge beyond conventional dentistry.

Oral Health & Beyond Collective brings together KIDS, DentalCareXtra, Snoring Laser Care and NovoGen under one shared philosophy — looking beyond individual services to consider the connections between oral health, breathing, function and overall wellbeing.

That philosophy is reflected today across Oral Health & Beyond Collective, with areas of focus including airway-focused dentistry, oral dysfunction, clear aligners, children’s oral development and hospitalbased dental care. The Collective has also embraced emerging technology, including the introduction of NovoTHOR photobiomodulation technology through

Together, they represent the Collective’s vision: “Connecting Whole-Body Wellbeing Through Oral Health & Airway Function.” oralhealthandbeyond.com.au www.corelife.com.au | 17

THE PRIVATE J INVESTIGATOR

CHANGING THE GAME WITH JASON KING FROM REGIONAL QUEENSLAND INVESTIGATIONS

ason King is changing the way investigations are approached in regional Australia, bringing decades of law enforcement, legal and investigative experience to communities that have traditionally had to look to the capital cities for specialist expertise, advocating to those who feel voiceless and pushing for higher industry standards across the board. In 2022, Jason moved from Melbourne to Mackay. Observing unmet demand for his services he rebranded his company two years later, turning J&D Online Investigations to Regional Queensland Investigations with an ambitious vision: to provide regional communities with the same calibre of investigative expertise available in Australia’s major cities. While Mackay is home, it is far from the centre of his operation. His work takes him throughout regional Queensland - from Cairns, Atherton and Toowoomba to Western Queensland - as well as into the Northern Territory. “Regional communities deserve the same quality of service as the cities,” Jason said. “They shouldn’t have to settle for less.” Jason’s career has included service with Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police, along with extensive experience in private investigations, law enforcement and the legal sector. He holds degrees in law and computer science and has worked across areas including counter-terrorism, cybercrime, child exploitation, fraud, sports integrity and major investigations. His experience has also included reviewing historical investigations and working on cold cases, where the combination of investigative knowledge and legal understanding can provide a different perspective on evidence that may have been overlooked decades earlier. Day to day, workplace investigations have become a significant part of Regional Queensland Investigations’ work, particularly where disputes, allegations of misconduct, internal conflict or competing factions have created difficult situations for management. Jason’s

point of difference is an independent perspective, held with integrity. “When I go in, I don’t know Peter from Paul,” he said. “My role is to look at the evidence and make recommendations based on what I find. No conflict of interest.” It is a seemingly simple principle, but one that can become complicated in regional organisations where professional and personal relationships often overlap. The work has taken Jason into investigations involving alleged fraud, workplace disputes, WorkCover matters, local government and community organisations. All the while, as Queensland Chapter President of the Australian Institute of Private Investigators, Jason pushes to regulate and keep the cowboys out of Private Investigation. Private investigators do not have police powers, he reminds us. They cannot simply force someone to provide information, access someone’s phone because a client demands it, or break the law in pursuit of evidence. If they do? The evidence may no longer stand up in court. “The public think that we can do anything, and we can break the law to do it,” Jason said. “We can’t break the law.” That is also why he is outspoken about licensing within the private investigation industry. Jason’s influence is now extending into the future, as the business grows and he mentors the next generation of investigators - though still keeps his eye across all cases passing through the business. Always looking to expand his impact, he’s also Director of new Cairns-based Regional Queensland Security Services (RQSS), and even lectures Law at CQ University on the side. Jason’s background in cybercrime and child exploitation has also left him passionate about education, particularly when it comes to protecting young people online. He believes parents, rather than children alone, need to be equipped to understand how online grooming and exploitation occur, in order to truly make change. Regional Queensland Investigations demonstrates that the biggest changemaker is not always the one in the big city, on the podium, or in front of the TV camera. Though Jason has lived this life, his reputation and acclaim has been a result of his work - not the motivation for it. Instead, he measures his success on impact; on cases solved, victims helped, perpetrators held accountable, and communities no longer left behind. rqinv.com.au Photo credit: Alyce Holzy

NURSE NEXT DOOR CARE THAT FEELS LIKE FAMILY

W

hen care moves beyond a transactional service and becomes a deeply personal relationship, the impact can be felt across an entire community.

That belief has been at the heart of Nurse Next Door Mackay since George Blackie and Sarah Ryan launched the franchise in 2023. After years working in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) sector, the pair recognised a gap for a local provider led by values and a commitment to people. “We treat people how we would like to be treated,” Sarah says. What sets Sarah and George apart is their ability to look beyond the care plan and see the whole person behind the care. They take time to understand each individual’s story, preferences, experiences and what matters most to them, creating support that is personal and compassionate. “We genuinely have the intention of Making Lives Better for everyone we cross paths with.” That philosophy is reflected in the relationships they build. One example is a client referred to as Bob, who had moved through several Mackay providers, with none lasting longer than nine months. With Nurse Next Door, he found stability and was supported for more than 18 months. Over that time, the team became a trusted presence. When Bob passed away, George and Sarah were by his side. “We were repeatedly told how Nurse Next Door was the best provider Bob had experienced, and we are grateful to have made his final years positive,” Sarah reflects. “The most rewarding part is making a difference for those who are extremely vulnerable and hesitant to trust.” While clinical safety, staff capability and training remain fundamental, Sarah believes exceptional care must include warmth and connection. “Complex community care is serious work, but there should always be room for laughter,” she says. “Quality care is built on a foundation of safety and happiness.” That combination of clinical excellence and empathy has supported growth. In its first year, Nurse Next Door Mackay delivered 15,267 hours of care. By 2026, that figure had grown to 143,943 hours. Behind every hour is a person, and Sarah and George are quick to recognise the team members who make that care possible. “We could not do what we do without the incredible people who choose Nurse Next Door and show up every day with the purpose of making someone else’s life better. Their commitment, compassion and dedication are what make the difference.” Their impact has been recognised nationally. Within three-and-a-half years of opening, Nurse Next Door Mackay was named Best Single Unit Franchise in Australia. For Sarah and George, being changemakers means challenging traditional models of care and continually asking how the experience can be improved. “Being a changemaker means staying adaptable, remaining curious and recognising that there is always something new to learn,” Sarah says. That mindset is what makes them genuine disruptors in the market. Rather than treating care as a checklist of tasks, they are helping redefine what quality home care can look like: more personal, more responsive and more connected to the individual. Their approach centres on understanding the person behind the care plan and supporting their independence, dignity and quality of life. It is a philosophy that challenges convention, raises expectations and demonstrates what is possible when care is built around people first. www.nursenextdoor.com.au.

CHANGEMAKER OF OUR TIME

THE YLOR’S LEGACY With Beau-Lee Miller

A

fter three decades in real estate and seven years building TAYLORS Property Specialists on strong relationships, personal service and a desire to do things differently, Rob Taylor is ready to pass the reins to a new owner as it begins its next chapter. Stepping forward as the new owner is Beau-Lea Miller, a real estate professional with more than 25 years of experience and a clear commitment to preserving and developing the business Rob created, supporting its people and cementing its place within the Whitsundays. Despite being a driven, forward-thinking leader, Beau has no plans to rewrite the formula that has made TAYLORS so successful. Only to build upon it. “I’m here to strengthen what Rob has built by supporting the team so they can be the very best they can be for the community they serve,” Beau said.

Intertwined with that vision is a renewed focus on property management, the area in which Beau began her career and one she describes as the core of a strong real estate business. Her goal is to strengthen TAYLORS’ rental division, ensuring the team has the knowledge and support they need to help clients protect their investments, while building wealth for the future. Luckily for Beau she has inherited an established, driven team, who she praises for their unwavering work ethic amidst all the changes. “They all have that fire in them,” Beau said. “I’ve seen the team really step up over the past few weeks, get on board, ask questions and bring forward their own ideas.” While some areas are set to evolve under Beau’s leadership, the team and its culture are what she is most determined to protect.

“I’m really blessed that Rob is giving me the opportunity to continue that legacy for him.”

Systems may be upgraded and services expanded, but the culture she has found at TAYLORS is something she does not want to change.

Beginning her real estate career at just 17, Beau gained experience in every corner of the industry, from property management and residential sales to agency ownership, business development, technology and team leadership.

“They call each other a family, but I think they’re an elite sports team in the truest sense,” she said.

She later established and led her own independent Brisbane agency, Beautique Realty, before taking on a state operations role with Elders Real Estate across Queensland and the Northern Territory.

“I haven’t seen many businesses that operate like that, and that legacy belongs to Rob. He created that here.”

The role saw her oversee around 12,500 properties across six offices, and while she valued the experience and work ethic it demanded, she longed to regain the personal connection of working within a closeknit, local agency. “It was important to me to get back into a business where I could be innovative, lead change and make a difference for its people,” Beau said. In her new role at TAYLORS, one of Beau’s key initiatives is bringing together the old and the new. The agency is built on strong values that have underpinned its success for many years, but with new systems and technology now at its disposal, she hopes to strike the right balance between innovation and genuine human connection. “There’s a younger generation of agents coming through, and I really want to make sure they’re supported,” she said. “It’s about building on those old-fashioned ways of doing things and bringing them into the new digital world. “Technology is here, but how do we make sure we keep the human element in those transactions?”

“Everybody supports everybody else to do their best. If one person is down, the others step forward and support them.

The final thing Beau values about TAYLORS is its place within the community. A strong local connection cannot be created overnight, but fortunately, TAYLORS are already established for Beau. Her task now is to nurture those relationships by continuing to support schools, sporting teams, local events and community initiatives. “Real estate agents can make a massive impact on a community because of the number of people they meet and the connections they have,” she said. “I want to make sure that whatever impact we make here genuinely makes a difference. “It’s not having an impact for marketing but having an impact that makes a difference.” As the Whitsundays develop and the property market evolves with it, Beau believes TAYLORS will move confidently into its next chapter without losing the values that earned the community’s trust. Rob may have laid the foundations, but Beau is ready to ensure what he built continues to strengthen for many years to come. taylorspropertyspecialists.com.au

THE COURAGE TO GO FURTHER DR MAGED AZIZ ADVANCED VASCULAR

Adaptability, patience and perseverance are embedded in the very fabric of who Dr Maged Aziz is. These are principles that have carried him through more than three decades in medicine, two surgical specialties and three countries, and now underpin the success of Advanced Vascular. But beneath the qualifications, years of training and technical expertise is a desire to keep learning, keep improving and, ultimately, make a difference in the lives of the people who place their trust in him. Dr Aziz was born and raised in Egypt before making the move to New Zealand, where he met his beloved wife and business partner, Debbie. The pair eventually packed up and made their way to Australia with their three children, now dedicating their time to servicing regional communities across Queensland and beyond. After completing his Fellowship in General Surgery, Dr Aziz could have considered his training complete. Instead, he chose to undertake further specialist training and earning a second fellowship in Vascular Surgery. It was a demanding path, one that expanded not only his surgical knowledge, but his understanding of what it means to care for a patient. At Advanced Vascular, Dr Aziz offers comprehensive assessment and treatment for varicose veins, leading with advanced non-surgical treatment options while drawing on his surgical expertise when required. He is an all-in-one specialist who is able to assess, investigate and guide patients through their treatment, rather than simply referring them from one place to another. His experience across General and Vascular Surgery, combined with his ability to perform his own ultrasound assessments, allows for a more streamlined approach from initial assessment through to treatment planning. “We tailor our services to what our patients need, not to what I can or can’t do,” he explained. As a family-run practice, Advanced Vascular understands that life does not always fit neatly into traditional appointment times. With telehealth consultations and in-person appointments available across Queensland, including Mackay and Maryborough, the practice is built around making specialist care more accessible to everyday people and their families. And perhaps one of the clearest reflections of Dr Aziz’s approach to medicine is knowing when not to intervene. Rather than recommending treatment for the sake of it, he believes patients deserve clarity, and an honest understanding of what is happening, what their options are and whether treatment is genuinely necessary. “I tell patients what they need, what they don’t need, and what their options are.” “We provide flexibility, and a one-stop-shop for our patients. We don’t wait for them to come to us – we actually go to them.” Advanced Vascular is ultimately about seeing the difference the right care can make – it’s confidence of someone who can walk without discomfort again, the relief of finally understanding a health concern, or simply getting back to the small, everyday freedoms that can so easily be taken for granted. “We see the real change in people’s lives – and that’s why we do it,” Dr Aziz said. More than establishing a specialist practice, Mr and Mrs Aziz have created a service with heart – one that continues to evolve, continues to learn and, above all, continues to put people first. 76 YEARS OF FAMILY AND FURNITURE Photo credit: R Jean Photography

O

ver 76 years of furnishing homes and venues across the Whitsundays, it’s safe to say Burnups Home Style has become a local institution, proving that family businesses should not be underestimated.

Island. With a commercial division that has been active for over 30 years, Burnups works alongside developers, hotels and private owners both on Hamilton Island and the mainland to provide a full interior decoration service.

Founded in 1950, three generations of Burnups have driven the Whitsundays furniture business, which started off as a ‘hole-in-the wall’ in Bowen, and now has two spacious showrooms in Bowen and Cannonvale, with a reputation for top quality furniture, advice and service built on trust.

Lasting 76 years has meant adapting to changing tastes, shifting supply chains and the way people furnish their homes.

Owner Clive Burnup has seen the business evolve through the years, from its beginnings with his father, John Burnup, at the reins, to now watching his daughter Isabella carry the family legacy forward. “It’s been a family business for a long time, with a lot of ups and downs along the way but we’ve truly got a nice, robust business here,” Clive said. “To see Issy add to the future is great.” For Issy, carrying on that legacy is about honouring what her parents and grandparents built, while helping shape Burnups for the future. “It feels really good, I mean not many businesses out there can say they’ve hit 76 years,” Issy said. “I think that’s quite an achievement in itself, and to have it still in the family is a very proud feeling.” The Burnups story began in Bowen with a ‘hole in the wall’ shop, before moving into their current larger premise on Powell Street. As the region grew, Burnups grew with it. The business expanded into Proserpine and Cannonvale, before eventually bringing those two new operations together at the current Cannonvale premises. Originally the family built the current Cannonvale business in a field surrounded by cane farms, now it is surrounded by the Whitsunday Plaza shopping Centre which was built around them. Over this time, the team has also expanded beyond it’s own premises, with goods regularly being delivered from Mackay to Ayr, and even Hamilton

In the early days, many manufacturers and suppliers were based in Brisbane. Today, the search for quality and distinctive pieces stretches much further. “We work pretty hard to bring unique products to the town, but I think that’s why we’re still alive,” Issy said. “So we’ve got a lot of Aussie-made suppliers as well as suppliers across Asia and even Italy. “We bring furniture in from all over the world to give the community something different and something that stands out against our competitors.” With a background in interior design, Issy has brought a more contemporary edge to the furniture selections she curates, while still holding onto the classic pieces Burnups customers have loved for generations. She is also carrying on the same commitment to quality and variety that has endeared Burnups to generations of Whitsunday customers, with each piece on the floor chosen to be the right fit for someone’s home. “Customers are everything,” Issy said. “We’ve always tried to offer a product that is good quality at a down-toearth price. “We want to look after the people who shop with us and help make their home theirs. We want to give everyone our positive service and quality product, as we want to see them come back every time.” burnupshomestyle.com.au www.corelife.com.au | 23

CHANGEMAKER OF OUR TIME

FINDING A WAY FORWARD Rachael Murray, Founder of Mind Psyence

F

or psychologist Rachael Murray, creating change is not necessarily about having a clear path ahead. Sometimes, it means believing strongly enough in what could exist to build that path yourself. As founder and director of Mind Psyence (Psychology and Research) in Slade Point, Rachael provides psychology services to older adolescents and adults across Mackay and the Whitsundays. Behind her everyday clinical work sits a bigger vision: ensuring regional communities are not left waiting for advances in mental health care to reach them. Rachael’s drive is deeply personal. At 16, she lost her only sister in a devastating car accident. That loss changed the trajectory of Rachael’s life forever and was followed by 25 years of complex grief. “Losing my sister and grieving over decades, sharpened my natural instinct to help into something more purposeful; setting me on a personal path exploring grief, growth, and healing in a much broader sense.” Today, my experience sits alongside qualifications in behavioural studies, psychological science and neuroscience, as well as further training in psychedelic-assisted therapies and integration. The vision for Mind Psyence began taking shape almost five years ago as Rachael became increasingly interested in research into medicineassisted therapies and their potential application for specific conditions. Central to that vision was a familiar regional challenge: access. Rachael had seen people waiting far too long for basic mental health support, while emerging treatment options were becoming available in metropolitan areas, they remained difficult to access from regional Queensland. “I wanted to build a practice that didn’t just deliver good care today, but helped bring innovative, evidence-based treatment options, like medicine-assisted therapies

for conditions such as PTSD and treatment-resistant depression, to a region that needs it, and that’s so often left behind.” Building towards that goal has not been easy. Rachael has largely funded this work through her own clinical income while learning grant writing, research governance, and partnership building. This year brought a significant setback when a funding application for a proposed five-year clinical trial into medicine-assisted therapy for PTSD was unsuccessful. “I’ve learnt that leadership in this space means being willing to go first — building partnerships, credibility and infrastructure without a roadmap, because no one else was doing this for our region in terms of medicine-assisted therapy.” Despite the scale of her ambitions, Rachael says the most rewarding part remains helping people through their everyday challenges. Looking ahead, she hopes Mind Psyence can grow from a solo practice into a multidisciplinary clinic bringing psychologists, psychiatrists, allied health professionals and researchers together. She also hopes Mackay and the Whitsundays will eventually have locally accessible, evidencebased medicine-assisted therapy programs and contribute to research in the field. Later this year, Rachael plans to travel to Canberra to work as a therapist on an Australian National University psychedelic-assisted therapy trial, while exploring opportunities for Mind Psyence to potentially become a Mackay trial site. For Rachael, change begins with refusing to accept that regional communities should simply go without. “It’s refusing to accept ‘that’s just how it is’ for the people in our community, and having both the patience and the determination to keep finding a way forward — steadily, with care, and for as long as possible.” mindpsyence.com.au

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT

W

CHANGEMAKER OF OUR TIME hat happens when you consistently prospect, secure appraisals and win listings?

Well, it creates momentum. The kind that builds stronger pipelines, creates new opportunities and drives long-term growth. And for eight people who topped The Sky’s The Limit leaderboards, it also meant an exclusive Study Tour to Singapore. Raine & Horne’s Ayr Principal Carla Healy travelled to Singapore for an experience designed to challenge thinking, expand perspective and celebrate success. Hosted by Executive Chairman Angus Raine and CEO Chris Nicholl, the Study Tour gave attendees the opportunity to step outside their day-to-day businesses, learn from global leaders and bring new ideas back into market.

“There are never enough words to fully describe the value of the experience,” said one. “You know it’s going to be great, but it still exceeds all your expectations.”

Singapore was selected for its global reputation in urban planning, sophisticated real estate development, technology and innovation, offering valuable insights into how one of the world’s most progressive cities approaches long-term planning, customer experience and growth.

Alongside the study tour program, attendees experienced some of Singapore’s most iconic attractions, including Sentosa Island, Mandai Wildlife Reserve, a guided food and history tour through Geylang and a farewell lunch overlooking the city skyline at Level33.

The group spent time with leading Singapore real estate company Hutton’s, gaining insights into market trends, urban planning and business growth. Attendees also visited the URA Gallery and major developments including Aurea at Golden Mile and W Residences Singapore.

Carla called the tour “an experience like no other, with extended R&H family to celebrate alongside with.”

Reflecting on the experience, attendees spoke highly of both the learning opportunities and the connections built throughout the week.

“Now off to our Conference which is being held on the glorious Hamilton Island, which will be filled with guest speakers and R&H family Australia-wide. Lot’s to participate in with a celebratory cruise on the MY RASCAL to enjoy... Can’t wait!” rh.com.au/ayr

Into The Rabbit Hole

CHANGEMAKER OF OUR TIME

B

right Patch Café Owner Jameela Walker has a habit of following kooky ideas to see where they lead.

She calls herself an ‘accidental’ businesswoman – driven by a coffee order complicated enough to keep any barista on their toes, and a question: what could make life feel better here? In 2020 in Sydney, the question led her to found Empowering Kids Therapy where she created a space for children to build everyday life skills, emotional regulation and independence. As a child, Jameela’s own interests stretched in a few directions, from acting to dancing and playing the cello. It gave her an early understanding of children whose curiosity could never be contained to just one pursuitsomething that informs her therapy practice. Two years later, Jameela decided to bring her business to the Whitsundays. “Proserpine soon became my home, the kind of place where my ideas could really flourish, growing like plants,” Jameela said. One such idea was the Bright Patch Cafe. Growing up, some of Jameela’s fondest memories were of cafe-hopping with her mum, trying different foods and coffees, and simply enjoying each other’s company. Wanting to create that same warmth for other families, she imagined a space where parents could enjoy a relaxing feed while their children had room to explore and have a bit of fun. With its detailed Alice in Wonderland theme, Bright Patch became a kind of rabbit hole in the heart of Proserpine, where children can escape into a space filled with colour, imagination and play. Alongside the cafe, Empowering Kids Therapy has continued to expand, carrying the same focus on helping young people feel safe, supported and able to thrive. In June 2026, the business became Empowering Pathways Therapy, expanding its focus to support adults as they develop their own pathways through life, through a creative, neurodiversity-affirming and deeply human approach. “I like being able to walk alongside each person as they discover their strengths, build confidence and shape a meaningful life,” Jameela said. Together, the cafe and therapy practice tell one story. “People flourish when they feel safe, seen, heard, respected and valued.” Jameela’s drive to help people has now earned her recognition beyond the walls of the cafe and therapy rooms. She has been named a finalist in two ALIBI award categories, Regional Service Superstar and Business Lady of the Year, and a listed nominee in the Whitsundays Business Awards, are moment she describes as both surprising and deeply meaningful. “The two ALIBI finalist places were a beautiful full-circle moment,” Jameela said. The woman who wandered into business by following her heart is now preparing for interviews celebrating her acumen. But for Jameela, the finalist places are not just about business success. They are about the families, staff, collaborators and community members who have helped bring each idea to life. “The recognition is beautiful, but it belongs to everyone who has believed in the vision and helped make these spaces what they are,” Jameela said. brightpatchcafe.com.au

THE BUSINESS OF BETTER COFFEE With Coffee Service Packaging

You might say Tien Norman was naturally destined for her career – it’s even in her name.

“They are left with a café without coffee, which is their bread and butter,” Tien explains.

“My name is Tien,” she laughs, “pronounced like ‘tee-in’ – tea ‘n coffee.”

“We are able to quickly respond to breakdowns, supply replacement machines or repair them quickly onsite.”

Whether fate had a hand in it or not, the Managing Director of Coffee Service Packaging has certainly found her place, in an industry driven by taste, innovation and most importantly, people. A mum to one daughter and two step-daughters, Tien took what she describes as the “big leap” into business ownership guided by a passion for problem-solving and making life easier for others. Her days involve customer meetings, coffee tastings, relationship building, bookwork, quoting and refining business processes – all of which are part of the blend in her day-to-day role. “I’m involved in a little bit of everything,” she says, always looking for ways to improve both her own business and those of her customers. More than just supplying coffee, machines and packaging, Coffee Service Packaging recognises a gap in an industry where customer service can sometimes take a back seat to sales volume. When a café’s coffee machine breaks down, the consequences can be immediate.

“When I was looking at purchasing a business, I really wanted something that suited my skill set, as well as something that I was passionate about. “Now that I am getting to know everyone, it really has shown me that it is a community of like-minded people, and it’s about the customer service 100%.” This people-centred perspective extends to her leadership style too. “Leadership isn’t really about being the boss,” she says. “It’s about providing a fun atmosphere, your staff feeling supported and making sure everyone has the same goals.” Tien believes kindness, communication and responsiveness are not revolutionary business concepts, but they can make a remarkable difference. Business ownership has also taught her that confidence does not mean having every answer. Balancing work and home life remains one of her greatest challenges.

“It’s like having a newborn baby,” she says. “You constantly question every decision and just have to trust that you are doing the right thing.” Fortunately, she has not navigated the journey alone, crediting her employees, suppliers, friends and family for their immense support. Looking ahead, Tien hopes Coffee Service Packaging will become an even greater part of the local business community, supporting cafés and helping reshape the way people think about a coffee supplier. There is also something fresh brewing, with the business currently developing a new look for its coffee brand, Caffenation. For Tien, being a Change Maker does not require changing the world overnight. Sometimes, she says, it simply starts with seeing a problem and asking: “How can I make this better?” If there’s one thing Tien is passion about in business, it’s showing up, solving problems and making sure nobody is left without their morning coffee! What advice would you give to your younger self? ‘Go for the opportunity, take chances, work hard, be confident and just be a good person.’ coffeeservicepackaging.com.au

More Than A Makeover With Quest Townsville On Eyre

“Our aim has always been to create a home away from home for our guests. Being able to create that transformation while giving back to our community has made it all the more meaningful.”

36 | www.corelife.com.au

A

new chapter is unfolding at Quest Townsville on Eyre, where a significant refurbishment has delivered a fresh guest experience while creating an unexpected opportunity to give back to the community beyond its doors. The transformation follows a change in ownership in October 2024, when Ben O’Sullivan, Alison Rayner and Gary Bass took over the Townsville property. From the outset, the trio shared a vision to invest in the apartment hotel, elevate the experience for guests and create contemporary spaces suited to the needs of those travelling to the city. The resulting refurbishment has touched guest rooms throughout the property, introducing new bedding and luxury mattresses, blackout curtains and custom-designed furniture. Every decision was made with comfort and functionality in mind, breathing new life into the accommodation while maintaining the sense of home that is central to the apartment hotel experience. It is a philosophy that aligns closely with the wider Quest brand, which has grown to more than 160 metropolitan, regional and suburban locations across Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, with properties operated by local owners under its franchise model. Yet some of the most meaningful work involved in the Townsville refurbishment happened away from the newly finished rooms. Replacing furniture and furnishings across a property of this scale created a question: what should happen to everything being removed? Rather than simply sending usable pieces to landfill, the team began looking throughout Townsville for people

and organisations that could give them a second life. What followed was a considerable community effort, with furniture and furnishings distributed among local charities, organisations, businesses and individuals in need. The initiative simultaneously reduced unnecessary waste and transformed a practical part of the refurbishment process into an opportunity to support the community. That drive to give back extends well beyond the renovation. Quest Townsville on Eyre has continued to build connections with organisations and initiatives including Hotels for Trees, Foodbank Queensland, the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal and Wounded Heroes Australia. Its relationship with Wounded Heroes Australia has also found its way directly into the guest experience. The property now stocks the organisation’s award-winning coffee, allowing visitors to support an important cause through something as simple as their morning cup. Revenue generated through the coffee supports Wounded Heroes Australia’s crisis services for veterans and their families across Townsville and the surrounding region; creating another avenue for the hotel and its guests to contribute to the community. At Quest, investment ripples outwards; from keeping useful furnishings out of landfill to supporting local charities and initiatives, the business model is built on an ambition to create moments that matter for guests, clients and the community alike. questapartments.com.au

10 Years Of Explore Munro

A Decade Of Putting People First

With Jools & Errol from Explore Property Munro & Co.

E

xplore Property Munro & Co. is celebrating ten years of businessa decade of integrity, culture, and commitment to putting people first. For Business Owner, Sales Manager and Sales Agent Jools Munro, launching the business was one of the most challenging and rewarding periods of her professional life. After spending 23 years as a police officer Jools made the leap into real estate after meeting her husband, Errol, who was already well established in the industry. “I watched him do what he was doing, and I thought - I think I could get a lot of happiness from this,” Jools explained. She was right. While the transition from policing to real estate represented a major change, the underlying motivation remained remarkably similar: service. “I’ve always enjoyed service.” Jools said. “It’s really what gets me out of bed. A little bit like policing, you know. People call police when they can’t solve a problem themselves, and it’s the same for real estate; except you’re helping somebody start a new journey.” This service-first philosophy has permeated all aspects of the business. In property sales, the company’s focus is on achieving the best possible outcomes for their clients, rather than simply maximising the

agent’s own result. In property management, quality service beats profit maximisation, with the business deliberately limiting the number of properties individual property managers oversee. Photo credit: Josephine Carter Photography

Another secret to ten years of success? Recruiting a strong team, and building a tight knit, unique team culture that retains talent.

That culture is underpinned by four principles drawn from Fish!, the well-known business book inspired by Seattle’s Pike Place Fish Market: choose the attitude you bring to work, be present in the moment, make someone else’s day every day, and have fun while working. The business has deliberately encouraged collaboration between sales, administration and property management, with teams bonding over monthly challenges. Driven by Jools’ bubbly personality and care for her team, the day-to-day is punctuated with plenty of laughs. “We celebrate together, and we have each other’s backs.” Jools said. “We don’t take from one another, we uplift one another. The culture is super important to me. We will never compromise on our morals and values and the fact that we focus on service: giving, not taking.” Putting this sentiment into action, Explore Property Munro & Co. has become a beloved part of the business community, running its annual Pooch Party on The Strand, supporting local events including India Fest, and being actively involved with organisations such as the Townsville Business Women’s Circle and Chamber of Commerce. Along the journey, property portfolios and teams expanded. The business began with virtually nothing, taking on a friend’s investment property as its first rental. Jools and Errol made significant personal sacrifices to fund its growth, including selling a boat, trading cars and downsizing their lifestyle. Now – those sacrifices have paid off. But growth has not simply been viewed as a measure of financial success – for Jools, it’s a way to create opportunities for the people within the business, allowing their agents and property managers to build their careers, take on new responsibilities, and progress within the organisation. Looking forward, Jools says the goal is not world domination. It is longevity - maintaining the same commitment to service, community and people that has shaped the business, to set it up for another decade of success. explorepropertymunro.com.au www.corelife.com.au | 41

Making Property Management Personal With Emily Wood

P

roperty management may revolve around homes, but for Senior Property Manager Emily Wood, it is the people behind them who matter most. Approachable, calm and committed to making the process easier for everyone involved, Emily understands that no two landlords, tenants or tenancies are quite the same. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, she takes the time to build genuine relationships, communicate openly and ensure both landlords and tenants feel supported throughout their tenancy. It is a philosophy underpinned by three simple

things: communication, trust and doing what you say you are going to do. With a hands-on approach and keen attention to detail, Emily takes pride in keeping everything organised and ensuring the properties entrusted to her care are well looked after. Of course, property management does not always go perfectly to plan. When challenges arise, Emily enjoys finding practical solutions and helping clients navigate the inevitable ups and downs that can come with managing a property. For landlords, she strives to provide honest advice and reliable service, while making what

can sometimes seem like a complicated process feel considerably more manageable. Her friendly nature complements a strong sense of responsibility, allowing her to bring both professionalism and a personal touch to her role. Away from property management, Emily’s attention turns to the people closest to her. She loves spending time with her family, particularly heading away on holidays and making new memories together – a chance to recharge before returning to the busy world of property management.

Building Relationships, Creating Opportunities With Ian Maloney

F

or Ian Maloney, successful business development starts well before an opportunity is put on the table – it begins with understanding the person sitting across from him. As Business Development Manager at Munro and Co in Townsville, Ian brings experience spanning both the automotive and property industries, with a career that has sharpened his ability to understand what clients need and build relationships that last. His background in car sales provided a strong foundation in negotiation, client management and communication, while teaching him the importance of listening closely to individual needs.

A move into house and land sales added another dimension to his expertise, allowing Ian to work closely with property buyers and investors, identify suitable opportunities and confidently communicate investment strategies. Today, he brings those skills together in his role at Munro and Co. Ian takes a client-first approach to business development, taking the time to understand each person’s goals, circumstances and investment objectives before exploring opportunities that align with them. Rather than focusing solely on the immediate transaction, his approach is centred on trust,

transparency and developing genuine longterm relationships. Backed by a strong commercial mindset, Ian understands that property and investment decisions can be significant ones, making clear communication and informed guidance an important part of the process. Ultimately, his goal is simple: to ensure clients have the information and support they need to make decisions with confidence. And ultimately, for Ian, good business is not simply about creating the next opportunity – it is about creating the right one for the person in front of him.

Experience Meets A Fresh Approach With Craig Allom

A

fter two decades in real estate, Craig Allom knows experience matters – but so does knowing when to think outside the square.

It is an approach that has seen Craig become a trusted property advisor who genuinely enjoys both the challenges of real estate and helping clients reach their property goals.

As a Sales and Marketing Consultant at Munro and Co in Townsville, Craig combines 20 years of industry knowledge with an individual approach to each property that comes across his desk.

For Craig, however, success is not measured solely by the final sale price.

Rather than relying on the same formula for every campaign, he develops strategies tailored to the property, market and goals of the client, backed by strong attention to detail and a determination to achieve the best possible result.

He places equal importance on the experience clients have along the way, providing honest advice, clear communication and consistent follow-through to ensure sellers remain informed and supported throughout their campaign. Behind him is the broader Munro and Co team, where collaboration forms an important part of

the sales process. Current campaigns and buyer feedback are regularly discussed among the sales team, allowing ideas and strategies to be shared with the goal of strengthening outcomes for sellers. Craig can also draw on the expertise of the agency’s property management, administration and compliance professionals throughout the transaction. For clients, it means gaining not only Craig’s two decades of knowledge and personal commitment, but the collective support of an experienced team working towards the same goal. www.corelife.com.au | 43

CONNECTIONS, CONVERSATIONS AND COMPETITION At Whitsunday Chamber Of Commerce & Industry’s 2026 Business Conference

A

successful business conference should leave people with more than a notebook full of ideas.

It should start conversations, create opportunities and send attendees back to work ready to put something new into action. By that measure, the 2026 Whitsunday Business Conference delivered. Organised by Whitsunday Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the conference brought together 120 attendees from 77 businesses, filling PCYC Whitsunday and Club Whitsunday with some of the region’s biggest operators and ideas. That buzz was backed by a strong program of speakers, led by award-winning media and communications expert Ian Cohen. Drawing on his experience in the high-pressure Olympic environment, Cohen delivered a presentation attendees described as inspiring, timely and “totally on the money”. Another highlight was the inaugural Rising Stars Panel, which handed the microphone to five local employees, trainees and apprentices under 25, giving business owners a rare chance to hear

directly from the next generation about their vision for the workplace. After a lunch full of networking, Mayor Ry Collins revealed the 46 businesses in contention for the 2026 Whitsunday Business Awards, placing some of the region’s standouts now firmly in the spotlight ahead of the awards night in October. Once the presentations wrapped up, things turned competitive. The inaugural Chamber Games took over Club Whitsunday, bringing local businesses and community teams together for an afternoon of friendly competition, enthusiastic cheering, creative costumes and tactics that occasionally tested the meaning of “friendly”. Blocklaying Airlie Beach proved the team to beat, claiming gold. Club Whitsunday made home-ground advantage count with silver, while Whitsunday Regional Council took bronze. Accountancy Plus Whitsunday may have missed the medals, but their team spirit earned them the

RAISING A GLASS TO TOWNSVILLE’S BEST IN BUSINESS With Townsville Chamber Of Commerce

T

he region's business community came together in style at The Ville for the Advocates Online Townsville Chamber Business Awards 2026, an evening dedicated to recognising the outstanding businesses, organisations and individuals helping drive Townsville's economic growth and community success. The annual awards program showcased the innovation, resilience and leadership that continues to define the local business landscape. Among the standout winners were QSG, which took home the prestigious Business of the Year Award, and My Holiday2 who won the Small Business of the Year Category. The awards also highlighted excellence across numerous categories, celebrating organisations and individuals who continue to raise the benchmark for business performance in North Queensland. Townsville Chamber CEO Emma Peters said the

awards provide a vital opportunity for businesses to step back from the day-to-day pressures of running an organisation and recognise just how much they have accomplished. "Businesses across our region have faced significant challenges in recent years, from rising costs and workforce pressures to ongoing economic uncertainty. These awards are an opportunity to pause, reflect and celebrate success. It is incredibly important that we take the time to recognise the hard work, perseverance and achievements of the people behind our businesses. Their success strengthens our economy, creates jobs and contributes to a thriving community." The celebration also marks the beginning of an important milestone year for the Chamber. In 2027, the Townsville Chamber will celebrate 145 years of supporting and advocating for businesses in Townsville, having proudly

represented the local business community since 1882. As the only independent, selffunded advocacy organisation in Townsville, the Chamber remains committed to ensuring the voice of business is heard while championing growth, innovation and opportunity across the region. As another successful awards program concludes, the Townsville Chamber congratulates all nominees, finalists and winners and thanks its sponsors, judges and members for continuing to support one of the region's most significant celebrations of business excellence. Businesses are invited to take advantage of the Chamber's extensive program of events and unlock the valuable networking, advocacy and support benefits that come with membership. townsvillechamber.com.au www.corelife.com.au | 45

BUDGET BLUES FOR PROPERTY, BUT A WIN FOR RETIREES The recent Federal Budget contained plenty of measures aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures, but when it comes to Australia’s residential property market, the outlook appears less encouraging. Housing affordability remains one of the nation’s biggest economic challenges and the Budget did little to address the fundamental problem: there simply aren’t enough homes being built to keep pace with demand. While various incentives and support measures may help some buyers at the margins, they risk increasing demand in a market already suffering from a chronic housing shortage. The biggest impact is likely to be felt in the capital cities. Sydney continues to face severe affordability pressures, with many younger Australians finding home ownership increasingly out of reach. Melbourne’s market has softened in recent years, but affordability remains challenging and investor sentiment remains subdued. Brisbane and Perth have enjoyed strong growth over the past several years as population growth and housing shortages have pushed prices higher. The challenge for many buyers is simple. Additional government spending may provide some costof-living relief, but it does little to solve supply constraints. When more money competes for the same number of properties, prices tend to remain elevated.

There may, however, be an unintended consequence that benefits regional Australia. As capital city housing becomes increasingly expensive, more Australians are looking beyond the metropolitan fringe in search of affordability and lifestyle. Improved technology, flexible working arrangements and changing lifestyle priorities have accelerated a trend that began during COVID. Many families are asking why they should pay capital city prices when regional centres can offer larger homes, a lower cost of living and a better work-life balance. This migration trend is already benefiting many regional communities. Towns and centres with good infrastructure, healthcare, schools and employment opportunities continue to attract residents relocating from major cities. Increased population growth often supports local businesses, strengthens employment and helps underpin housing demand. For regions such as the Whitsundays, strong lifestyle appeal combined with relatively affordable housing compared to major capitals may continue to attract new residents. While interest rates and cost-of-living pressures affect everyone, regional areas experiencing inward migration are generally better positioned than locations where populations are stagnant or declining. That doesn’t mean regional property markets are immune from challenges. Growing demand

can place pressure on rental accommodation, services and infrastructure. However, compared to the affordability crisis faced by many city buyers, regional communities often remain attractive alternatives. The most positive aspect of the Budget may well be what wasn’t changed. Prior to the Budget there was widespread speculation about possible changes to superannuation and retirement income settings. For most Australians, those fears proved unfounded. The superannuation and Age Pension systems were left largely unchanged, providing welcome certainty for retirees and those approaching retirement. Stability is particularly important when planning for retirement. Significant policy shifts can create uncertainty and make long-term financial decisions more difficult. Australia’s superannuation system remains one of the strongest retirement savings frameworks in the world and maintaining that stability allows Australians to continue planning with confidence. While the Budget is unlikely to improve housing affordability in the short term, particularly in the major capitals, regional Australia may continue to benefit from the migration of families seeking a more affordable lifestyle. For retirees, investors and homeowners alike, understanding these shifting trends will be critical in navigating the years ahead

GET TO KNOW DR KAVEET RANIGA

Hanly Dental Studio’s New Associate Dentist

M

ackay-born dentist Dr Kaveet Raniga is swapping miniature figurines and long-distance target shooting for a new chapter at Hanly Dental Studio, bringing more than five years of hands-on experience and a friendly, people-focused approach to his role as Associate Dentist, with bookings opening from September. Dr Kaveet has always enjoyed working with his hands, but when he first started treating patients in his third year of University everything just clicked. “When I started treating patients that’s when I really found a passion for it.” More than five years later, it’s the variety of dentistry, and the people behind each appointment, that continue to make the profession rewarding for Dr Kaveet. While no two days are the same, his role

often sees him involved in ceramic work and rehabilitation, alongside check-ups, fillings, cleans, whitening and oral surgery – but whether a patient needs a small procedure or more complex treatment, Dr Kaveet’s focus remains firmly on helping people feel comfortable, cared for and confident in their treatment. For Dr Kaveet, some of the most rewarding moments are often the smallest. Whether it’s seeing a patient’s genuine reaction when they look in the mirror after treatment, or giving a young patient a high-five after a check-up, he values the opportunity to make someone’s experience a positive one. “It’s just small wholesome moments like that that really mean a lot to me.” That people-first approach is particularly important when treating patients who may feel nervous or apprehensive about visiting the dentist.

Dr Kaveet believes building trust can take time and is more than happy to work at a patient’s pace, whether they are coming in for a routine check-up or something more elaborate. Independence Starts Here At ILSA Mackay

F

or 10 years, ILSA has been part of the Mackay community, supporting people living with disability to have greater choice, independence and confidence. A local, not-for-profit community organisation, ILSA is a registered NDIS and NIISQ provider supporting people aged 18 and over in Mackay. ILSA also provides disability and funded aged care services in Cairns. At the heart of ILSA is a simple belief: every person deserves support that fits their life. That means taking the time to understand what matters to each individual, how they want to live and what support will help them get there. From everyday assistance at home to getting out into the community and working towards bigger personal goals, ILSA focuses on helping people maintain independence and stay connected to the life they choose.

Governed by people with lived experience, choice and autonomy have been part of ILSA’s approach from the beginning. After a decade in Mackay, the organisation remains proudly local, approachable, and connected to the community. Clients know who they are dealing with, staff understand the communities they work in, and relationships remain at the centre of the way ILSA operates. Disability and aged care are changing rapidly, with ongoing reforms, workforce pressures, and increasing complexity. Through that change, ILSA has stayed focused on providing reliable, responsive support, listening to clients and staff, and continually improving. That commitment is reflected in the consistently positive feedback received from both the people ILSA supports and the people who work with them. ILSA also recognises that great support starts with great people. Staff are valued and supported

through mentoring, professional development, and ongoing training, helping them build the skills and confidence to provide consistent, compassionate support. Investing in its people is an important part of ILSA’s commitment to quality — for both clients and staff. As a registered charity, ILSA also recognises that disability and financial hardship can go hand in hand. Donations help provide additional assistance, equipment and opportunities that may otherwise be out of reach. For ILSA, independence is found in the everyday — and sometimes the right support can create the opportunity for something extraordinary. If you or someone you know is looking for a local, trusted provider that genuinely listens, get in touch with ILSA and discover how they can help you live life on your terms.. fnqilsa.org.au www.corelife.com.au | 47

SEVEN AWARDS, ONE TEAM FERGUS BUILDERS CELEBRATES ANOTHER REMARKABLE YEAR

T

here is no shortage of impressive projects carrying the Fergus Builders name across Mackay and the Whitsundays region. From schools and commercial spaces to striking homes and community landmarks, the company’s work has become a familiar part of the local landscape. But despite another remarkable night of recognition at the 2026 Master Builders Mackay & Whitsunday Awards, Director Adam Wright is quick to shine the spotlight towards the people behind the projects. Fergus Builders took home seven awards across residential, commercial and education categories, recognising the Gardian Office Fitout, St Patrick’s Mercy Campus Hall Refurbishment, Catherine McAuley College Stage 3, Pandanus House at Eimeo and Whitehaven at Beaconsfield. Team member Amanda Wilson was also the recipient of the Women in Building Award, while Fergus Builders received the prestigious BUSSQ Building Super President’s Award for Azura Place at Glenella. For Adam, the achievement was not simply about collecting trophies. “We were lucky enough to pick up seven awards. It’s always a good feeling, and we come together as a team to celebrate it. It’s a great night to celebrate not just our own team, but the whole industry and the level of excellence the region produces.” It’s statements like this that reflects the nature of the business itself. Behind every finished façade, polished fit out and carefully considered home is a different set of challenges, clients and ideas. “Each project is different, and that’s one of the great things about building, no two jobs are ever the same. They all come with their own experiences, different clients and different designs, so the awards are

a great reflection of the team we have, and I’m very proud to be part of it.” While Fergus Builders has become a familiar name among the winners at the annual awards, Adam said the recognition never becomes routine. “We treat each project individually, and each one brings its own challenges and experiences. To receive that recognition is a great reflection of the work our team continues to put in day-in and dayout.” Among the night’s highlights was Amanda Wilson’s Women in Building Award, with Adam describing the recognition as particularly rewarding. “Amanda winning the Women in Building Award was probably the highlight for me. She’s been a valuable member of our team on the residential side of the business for a number of years, so it was great recognition for the hard work she puts in, both at work and away from work.” The President’s Award for Azura Place was another significant moment, recognising the quality of work Fergus Builders continues to deliver. “The President’s Award is always a great award to win. It showcases the quality of work that we produce, so we’re very proud of that recognition as well.” For Adam and the Fergus Builders team, however, the greatest measure of success remains the trust placed in them to help shape the community around them. “Delivering for our clients across the region is one of the highlights of the job, to tell you the truth. It feels good to know that you’re entrusted to deliver those prominent projects for the community. “That’s what we strive to do – build the best projects we can for our clients and for the community.”

BUILDING HER WAY TO THE TOP CELEBRATING AMANDA WILSON

I

n an industry traditionally dominated by men, Amanda Wilson has spent the past 14 years proving there is no limit to where knowledge, determination and a willingness to learn can take you. Now Residential Manager at Fergus Builders, Amanda has risen through the industry while becoming an advocate and mentor for other women in construction, with her achievements recently recognised with the Women in Building Award.

Amanda’s innate drive has extended well beyond her own career, with her passion for the industry reflected in the support and mentorship she provides to new residential office staff at Fergus Builders, alongside initiatives designed to give female employees greater exposure to the practical side of construction. Additionally, in 2025, Amanda became a mentor through Master Builders’ Emerging Women in Construction program and has continued in the role this year.

“Being a female in this industry can feel isolating. Especially if you are relatively new and don’t understand all the building jargon or the construction process,” Amanda said.

“Women offer a valuable perspective in construction and tackle problems differently, sometimes more efficiently, more methodical,” Amanda said.

“But it’s not something you can learn overnight, it takes time. Women have a really important role to play in this industry and it’s no longer confined to office work.”

“It can be daunting, but it can be such a rewarding career path, so I would encourage women to take that leap of faith if they are interested in it.”

Amanda joined Fergus Builders in 2018 in a sales and estimating role, bringing six years of previous industry experience. Over the years, her responsibilities have grown greatly alongside her knowledge of construction, leading to her appointment as Residential Manager in 2024.

Amanda’s own contribution to the industry was recognised with the Women in Building Award, an achievement Amanda described as an honour after looking up to previous recipients throughout her career.

“I began working for Fergus in a sales/ estimating capacity in 2018, and over the years I’ve learnt so much more about on-site construction and project management,” she said. “Having a comprehensive understanding of how design, pricing and construction on site are intertwined with each other has been essential to heading the division.” Determined to keep progressing, Amanda began studying a Bachelor of Construction Management two years ago while working full-time and is now also working towards becoming a qualified site supervisor and obtaining her QBCC licence. “The more I learn, the bigger role I can play, the more job satisfaction I feel.”

“I have looked up to the women who’ve received this award over the years and aspired to make a difference in this industry, so it was an honour to receive this award,” she said. Despite having already contributed to more than 250 projects throughout her career, Amanda sees plenty still ahead, with part of that future focused on creating opportunities for other women to forge their own paths in construction. “Personally, I feel like I’m just getting started in this industry,” she said. “I want to break through the glass ceiling of what women have traditionally achieved in the construction field and help pave the way for the women behind me to achieve great things in this career path.”

ore than a century after the Lowcock family first began building in the region, the Bowen company’s commitment to quality has earned fresh recognition, claiming two honours at the Master Builders Mackay & Whitsunday Housing & Construction Awards. Lowcock’s quality of work was recognised across two distinct categories, with its Yaringa Units project winning the Medium Density up to Three Storeys award and VaultX Storage taking out the Commercial/Industrial Building up to $3 million category. The Yaringa Units comprise four thoughtfully designed two-bedroom residences, providing secure and affordable accommodation for up to eight frontline health, education and aged-care workers in Bowen.

Described as the first purpose-built accommodation project of its kind in Queensland, Yaringa was supported by the Queensland Government through Round 3 of the Resources Community Infrastructure Fund.

by 3m to 24m by 3.3m, catering to a variety of customer needs. With capacity to expand to 82 units, VaultX was designed to meet both current demand and Bowen’s future storage needs.

VaultX Storage, meanwhile, was developed to meet Bowen’s growing demand for safe and convenient self-storage.

These award-winning builds are just two of the many projects Lowcock Builders has delivered across the region, alongside the Airlie Beach Car Wash, Bowen TAFE Agriculture Centre of Excellence, Hillview unit complex and Nolan’s Interstate Transport facility. Each reflects the same care and attention to detail the company brings to every build.

The purpose built facility offers 24-hour access and personalised PIN security within a clean, modern design. Storage spaces range from 2.3m

This success is nothing new for Jack and Jen Lowcock, who have been carrying forward a legacy of success stretching back to 1918.

Each residence offers generous open-plan living, plenty of natural light, durable finishes and added privacy, creating a practical and welcoming development that complements Bowen Community Council Inc.’s existing building style.

FMS Group Challenging The Way Things Have Always Been Done For FMS Group, some of the best innovations begin with a simple question: why has it always been done this way? That mindset has driven a 20-year commitment to finding safer and more efficient ways to tackle complex mining maintenance and shutdown work, and has now earned FMS Group the Austmine Innovation (METS) Award at the recent 2026 Queensland Mining Awards. The impressive accolade recognises FMS Group’s Dipper Skid and Hoist Rope Install Jig, an innovation developed by its frontline teams to address a high-risk task on electric shovels. Until recently, changing a hoist rope required a live shovel and a crane working alongside the equipment. FMS Group developed a pneumatic jig, dipper counterweight and skid mechanism that allows hoist ropes to be replaced without using a crane or powering up the equipment. Following trials across six shutdowns, the method reduced downtime by two to three days while eliminating the hazard associated with the previous process. It is a practical example of how FMS Group approaches continuous improvement: operational teams identify challenges through their experience in the field, while engineering and technical teams develop the methodology, testing and design required to make the solution safe and workable. But much of that work happens long before a shutdown begins. FMS Group’s projects can involve crews of 18 to 80 employees, large cranes, specialised jacking equipment, line boring and machining gear, and

purpose-built jigs and tooling. Detailed planning, project methodologies, equipment mobilisation and careful scheduling are essential when multiple work fronts are operating simultaneously. Safety sits at the centre of that process. FMS Group’s supervisors and leadership teams manage execution risk, coordinate work fronts and maintain close communication with clients Other FMS engineering developments have similarly focused on reducing crane interactions and improving control of high-risk tasks, while also targeting shutdown efficiencies. In some applications, these improvements can save 24 to 48 hours at the end of a shutdown while electrical and systems commissioning is completed. For FMS Group, the QLD Mining Awards recognition is a significant milestone, and one the team says they are grateful for. FMS Group remains committed to improving, questioning established methods and, above all, ensuring everyone gets home safely. fms-group.com.au

THE ART OF HER

Meet The Woman Behind The ‘Women Over 40’ Portrait Project

O

riginally from Dysart, Alyce Holzy has called Mackay home since 2008, and while she has always had a camera in her hands from a young age, it wasn’t until 2011 that she began exploring photography as a hobby before leaving her corporate career in 2020 to turn her passion into a full-time business, known as Alyce Holzy Photography. And in 2024 opening a studio for Boudoir By Alyce. After turning 40 herself this year, Alyce felt inspired to create something that would give women the opportunity to step in front of the camera, be pampered, and most importantly, feel seen, celebrated, and heard. “I thought this could be a really great opportunity for women over forty to embrace this season of life, who have a story to tell, and ultimately, I just wanted them to know that they matter.’” Inspired by authentic portraits proudly displayed in her nan’s home from decades ago, Alyce wanted to create a supportive space and bring a renewed focus to the traditional portrait, while creating something every woman could treasure. Sixteen women ultimately took part in the debut project, with each woman bringing her own experiences, memories and stories to the space Alyce had created.

her heart, filled with moments of connection, laughter and emotion. “I’ve had laughs with some of the women, even belly laughs! “I’ve also shed tears with some of the women – it’s truly been a touching experience.” The project also proudly supported The Neighbourhood Hub Mackay, with the 40 Over 40 Portrait Project donating $1,600 to the organisation. Alyce would like to thank the following supporters who have helped make this Project possible: • Funk It Up Mackay • Atkins Lab • Barrel Room by Plattered Up/ The Deli Nook • Soleil Coastal • Nancy’s Gym • Ella Bache Mackay • Laffos • Hotel Mackay

“The project was never about who’s endured the most in their life. It’s just a place and a unique experience where they can show up, be themselves, and tell their story.”

• Laffos Cookies

Some women were starting over, some had experienced significant challenges, while others simply wanted to celebrate the life they had lived.

• Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal

“The women who are in it, are just incredible. “It’s truly eye-opening what some of them have walked through in their life, and honourable how they’re still standing – how they’re still showing up – it’s just so inspirational.” Through the experience, Alyce said she was reminded that there is often far more to someone’s story than what can be seen on the surface.

• The Avenue • Hairway Mackay

• All the unsung heroes who advocated for the 40 over 40 Project For Alyce, beauty is not only captured through a camera lens, but rather it’s found in kindness, compassion, grace and the stories people carry.

“We really don’t know what others have gone through to get here, which is why we just need to treat everyone with grace and kindness.”

What’s a quote or motto you live by?

The women were pampered, photographed and professionally framed, and each participant had the opportunity to share her story. A coffeetable-style book was also created, with a special exhibition and gala to be held at the Barrel Room (Deli Nook) for the sixteen women involved in September.

71 YEARS IN THE MAKING

40 OVER 40 PORTRAIT PROJECT

HEATHER KUMMERFELD

A

t 71, Heather Kummerfeld has arrived at a place many spend decades striving toward: genuinely accepting and celebrating the woman she has become. Born and raised in Mackay, Heather’s roots have remained firmly planted in her hometown despite adventures across Australia and around the world. Her greatest joy lies close to home, surrounded by family and friends, supporting those she loves and finding purpose in small acts of kindness. Add the opportunity to dress up, put on some lipstick and share good food and a glass of bubbles with friends, and life is even sweeter. Yet the confidence Heather carries today was built over time. She describes a journey through shyness and self-doubt, alongside love, happiness, grief and loss. Her proudest achievement was raising a kind and successful son with her husband of 50

years, and watching their family grow to include two much-loved grandsons. “I am who I am and I accept and am confident with the woman I have become.” Now, following the loss of her husband, Heather carries both gratitude for the life they shared and determination to embrace the years ahead. “Life is precious and I am grateful for every opportunity to laugh, love, make memories and embrace whatever adventures may still come my way.” Encouraged by her niece to join the Women Over 40 Project, Heather has also begun recognising in herself the strength, intelligence and independence her loved ones have long seen. Perhaps her best advice comes from experience: “Live fully, laugh often, love deeply and make the most of every beautiful moment you are given.” Photo credit: Alyce Holzy

TURNING EXPERIENCE INTO PURPOSE Laura Hamilton

F

or Laura Hamilton, life after 40 has been defined not by slowing down, but by discovering just how much more was possible.

Now 46, the founder and director of Elegance Lymphatic Care has transformed some of her most difficult experiences into a career dedicated to helping others feel heard, understood and supported. After growing up in Ballarat and moving to Queensland around 20 years ago, Laura eventually made the Mackay region home. Her journey has encompassed motherhood, significant health challenges, major surgeries and career changes, including her own experiences with lipoedema, lymphoedema and chronic pain. Rather than allowing those chapters to define her, Laura used them to shape what came next. She returned to study, became an accredited lymphoedema practitioner and established Elegance Lymphatic Care, creating the kind of support she once wished had been available to her.

Professionally, building the clinic and sharing her knowledge at conferences and industry events have been significant achievements. Personally, she is proudest of raising her daughter with the confidence to know challenges do not have to determine her future. Laura says her 40s have brought a newfound sense of clarity, confidence and purpose. “The greatest gift has been finally understanding who I am and no longer feeling that I need everyone else’s approval.” It is also a decade that has taught her there is no deadline for reinvention. “You are not too old, and it is not too late. Everything you have experienced has prepared you for what comes next.” As she looks ahead, Laura hopes to continue growing her clinic, further her education and watch her daughter forge her own path. And for Laura, some of life’s most meaningful chapters may still be waiting to be written. www.elegancecare.com.au

t 54, Deidre Schill is embracing a chapter shaped by wisdom, self-acceptance and a deeper appreciation for a life intertwined with both extraordinary joy and profound heartache.

victim mindset has been one of her greatest achievements. She’s learnt to ask, “What part of this is mine to own?” – not because everything was her fault, but because owning her part gave her the power to change it.

A writer, mother, partner, sister and friend, Deidre’s story has taken her from Mansfield in Victoria to Mackay and Ilbilbie in Queensland – but home, she says, has always been more than a place.

“I own who I am today.”

“I’m from a loving home. I’m from my parents. I’m from God. All of those places and people are part of where I come from.” Deidre welcomed her daughter Kahli at 44, the same year her brother died, experiencing “incredible joy alongside heartache and crushing change.” “What surprised me most is that life gets better with each passing year,” she said. Through those experiences, Deidre gained a new perspective and began letting go of the need to please everyone. 56 | www.corelife.com.au

Looking inward and stepping beyond a

“My body isn’t just something to look at anymore. It’s where I get to experience my life.” It’s a perspective that extends to her understanding of beauty, too. “You can wash glamour off. You can’t wash beauty off.” Deidre says taking part in the Women Over 40 project was an opportunity to capture herself exactly as she is, not because she needed to be reminded of her worth, but because she wanted something tangible to remember this chapter by. “I’ll remember this woman, this chapter of my life, and how amazing I always was.” Advice to other women / your younger self? “Honestly, forgive yourself. 40 OVER 40 PORTRAIT PROJECT

ONE STEP FORWARD, EVERY DAY Michelle Leeson

A

t 48, Michelle Leeson knows life rarely follows the path we expect – and sometimes its greatest challenges can lead us somewhere entirely new.

Having lived locally since she was 16, Michelle’s life today centres around her four children, a love of learning and an outlook shaped by an extraordinary period of change. Her 40s began with life seemingly settled. She loved her work as a teacher aide, her children were happy and she and her husband had celebrated 20 years of marriage by renewing their vows. Then, in 2021, Michelle was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. With a frightening prognosis and the possibility she may not survive, treatment tested a strength Michelle already knew she possessed. What surprised her was how difficult life could be once treatment ended. “Being in treatment was scary and hard but finishing treatment and rebuilding my life was almost harder.” Michelle advocated for herself, sought the right professional support and began rebuilding her health across mind, body and spirit. Today, having beaten cancer, she says she is the healthiest she has been in a long time. The experience also fundamentally changed the way she viewed caring for herself. Twenty years ago, immersed in raising three young children, Michelle routinely placed herself last. Cancer taught her that prioritising her own wellbeing was not selfish, but essential. “I know firsthand that if Mum crumbles the whole family follows.” Her recovery sparked another transformation. A lifelong learner with a fascination for psychology, health and personal development, Michelle channelled that curiosity into new qualifications as a life coach and Pilates instructor; achievements she admits would have seemed unimaginable eight years ago. Now she is preparing to launch Life Forward Coaching, turning years of lived experience and learning into a business focused on helping others rebuild following significant challenges. Part of that vision includes a comprehensive after-care program for cancer survivors, inspired by a gap Michelle recognised through her own recovery. “I wasn’t ready 10 years ago to offer the service to others that I am now. I had more lessons to learn before I realized that there was a real need for a comprehensive after care program for cancer survivors.” Joining the Women Over 40 Project has offered Michelle another opportunity to mark this chapter. After her daughter’s wedding prompted the realisation that she was usually behind the camera rather than in photographs herself, the importance of capturing moments became particularly poignant. Having lost her parents, two brothers and sister, Michelle understands how precious photographs can eventually become. Her portrait now represents more than turning 48. It captures the year she transformed a long-held ambition to help others into reality. The future is filled with milestones – another daughter’s wedding, her son completing his apprenticeship, her youngest beginning high school and, one day, grandchildren. And at 48, Michelle is approaching all of it with a message she hopes other women will carry with them. “Turning 40 is a gift. You’re not past your used by date. You’re actually at an age where you have so much to give. Use that life experience and knowledge and do something great with it.” Her philosophy for what comes next is fittingly simple: “One Step Forward. Every Day.”

A WINNING YEAR FOR SENSE I OF SKIN

t has been another remarkable year for Mackay’s Sense of Skin, with founder Bre Sanders returning from two major industry awards with an impressive collection of accolades celebrating both her business and the results achieved for her clients. Sense of Skin recently placed second in the Pigmentation Category and third in the Revive Category at the Best in Skin Awards, before an exceptional showing at the 2026 Circadia Awards Gala.

Skin comes back to something simple: authenticity. “I created Sense of Skin to be a safe space where people could feel comfortable being vulnerable about their skin, their struggles, and how those struggles can affect their confidence and everyday lives,” she said. “At the end of the day, I just want people to feel heard, supported and cared for—and that will always be at the heart of what I do.”

Marking a significant milestone in her career, Bre was named Circadia Australia’s Sole Operator for 2026 and Queensland Sole Operator for 2026, while also receiving Blue Diamond status and recognition as a Queensland Ambassador. Bre also excitingly took home first place for Skin Transformation – Pigmentation, second place for Skin Transformation – Acne and third place for Skin Transformation – Sensitive, with the results recognising the transformations achieved alongside her clients.

Having experienced difficult skin herself as a teenager, Bre understands firsthand how deeply skin concerns can affect confidence, and that experience has in turn helped shape her approach throughout 14 years in the industry and continues to drive her commitment to education and evidencebased treatments.

“My favourite part wasn’t the awards themselves—it was being able to tell my clients that we had won because of their incredible skin transformations,” Bre said.

Now back home after attending the Circadia Awards Gala in Sydney, the reality of receiving national recognition as a sole operator from regional Queensland is beginning to sink in, with Bre describing the achievement as particularly surreal and crediting her family, clients and Circadia community for their continued support.

“For me, it’s never really about the award. It’s about changing someone’s life.” After also receiving industry recognition in 2025, Bre believes the continued success of Sense of

“The industry is constantly evolving, and if there’s something better out there, I want to know what it is, how it works, and most importantly, why it works,” she said.

“I’m a regional, small-business owner, doing what I love in a little corner of Queensland— and somehow, I’ve just won National Sole Operator for Circadia. Like… WHAT?! “It’s moments like this that remind me that you don’t have to be in a major city or have a massive team behind you to make an impact. You just have to be passionate, back yourself, and keep showing up.” With the potential for even greater things ahead, Bre is now looking for the next “superstar skin therapist” to join Sense of Skin, while a new premises could also be on the horizon as the business enters its next chapter. senseofskinandbeauty. com.au
