Hi Everyone,
It dawned on me recently that some of you may not know me at all.
That realisation came during a long, wet drive south with my family for our annual summer holiday. After weeks of relentless rain while we holidayed in Townsville over New Year, the skies conveniently cleared for the week I returned to work in the Whitsundays, only to close in again the moment our holiday resumed. The weather eventually escalated into a cyclone that crossed land in the Burdekin and battered the Whitsunday coastline, damaging boats and beaches.

Meanwhile, we packed the car in a flurry of wind and rain and began our yearly pilgrimage down the coast. My trusty BOM app became my constant companion as I watched the same weather system make a U-turn and follow us south. Resigned to our fate, we endured seven hours of torrential rain, finally emerging around Bundaberg.
Before the trip, I’d picked up a couple of magazines, and the long journey gave me the rare chance to read them properly. I flicked through pages, lingered on stories that caught my attention and even completed part of a crossword. It reminded me how much I love magazines, but more than that, how much I love reading about people. Their stories. Their journeys. Who they really are. So, in that vein, here is mine.
My name is Rachael. I’ve been the editor of this magazine for almost nine years and have worked with the company for nearly 11. I’m almost 44 and moved to Australia from the UK 21 years ago. When I first arrived, I spent nearly two years living and working on a charter boat in the Whitsundays, running overnight tours for backpackers.
From there, I moved to Byron Bay, where I opened a café with friends and ran it successfully for four years. When I returned to the Whitsundays, I spotted a job ad in the local newspaper for a role at the local newspaper and took the chance to finally pursue a career in media.
After 18 months in sales, I knew this was my industry. I joined Life Publishing Group to begin my writing career, was promoted to editor a few years later, and soon after welcomed my beautiful son, Reef. A few years on, my world was rocked by a cancer diagnosis. Six months of chemotherapy later, I was given the all-clear. I fought through the chemo fog, rebuilt my strength and carried on.
Six months later, in mid-2020, we launched our first weekly newspaper. With no experience in weekly news, we were driven by pure passion and perseverance. Thankfully, that determination prevailed, and one paper soon became two, then three.
Around the same time, I fell in love, got married and now share life with my husband and our three children in a modern, chaotic and deeply loving family.
As I sit here carving out a few quiet work hours while on holiday, I’m reflecting on how far our team has come, how much our story has grown.
Just as I loved reading other people’s stories on that rainy drive, Core Magazine is built on personal stories. I hope you enjoy reading about our local community, and if you have a story to share, we would love to hear it.

With a strong professional background and respected legacy in the political sphere, Townsville City Council Mayor, Nick Dametto has come along way since he was just a kid on a North Queensland cane farm.
Growing up in the Hinchinbrook Shire in the rural locality of Hawkins Creek, Nick was raised in a tight-knit farming community settled largely by Italian migrants just north of Ingham. Nick’s childhood was spent outdoors and perfectly defined by adventure and lessons in hard work that continue to shape him today.
“It was great growing up in North Queensland,” Nick reminisced.
“I had a free-range childhood spent riding pushbikes, motorbikes and four-wheelers and fishing down the river every afternoon to catch black brim or barramundi – we were pretty safe to do whatever we liked – as long as we were home by dark and didn’t accidently burn anything down on the cane farm!”
Nick’s formative years of fence free freedom taught him values of self-reliance, problemsolving and the value of hard work. Whether digging a bogged vehicle out of mud or retrieving a snagged lure from the other side of a river, Nick learned that a hands-on approach always wins.
“Growing up on a farm, you’re taught to do your own problem solving – bogged or stuck, it’s up to you to make a decision,” Nick continued. With sleeves often rolled up to his elbows, Nick speaks admirably of his grandfather
and father’s work ethics and credits his mother’s diligence to forming several core values he’s carried into adulthood.
“It’s tough on the farm, and helping out taught me that if you wanted anything in life you had to work hard for it, and that’s something I’ve taken into my adult life.”
Nick also fondly reminisces on the camaraderie forged with childhood friends during long days of camping and fishing as a blueprint for lasting mateship.
“We were always up to no good,” he laughed.
“But building mateship with those people that would become lifelong friends taught me how important it is to invest time with people, and you always have got to have your friends’ backs.”
Family remains central to Nick’s life. Born into a large Italian family - his grandmother had six siblings, his father four - he grew up amidst social Sunday lunches, full of homemade pasta, laughter, and the smells of sugo simmering on the stove.
“There’s always a family function – a loud, full on family function – really, it was just a loud yet nurturing environment to grow up in and to me, a perfect day is still centred around family,” explained Nick.
“Sometimes when you take on very public roles, it’s like being caught in a whirlwind, and it’s always good to have family that keeps you grounded - spending time together, enjoying a meal, conversation, catch up, taking a step

back - that’s just what you need.”
Nick acknowledges the public demands of elected life, recalling moments when people would approach him mid-meal or during family time to thank him for help that truly changed their lives, or to ask urgent questions about local issues.
“It’s almost like you’re married to the city, or in my previous role, married to the electorate. I took on the role of Townsville Mayor because I wanted to see North Queensland flourish, because I believe that when Townsville does well, the whole region does.”
Yet despite the whirlwind of public responsibilities, Nick always finds grounding in the time he shares with his loved ones, and the Italian culinary traditions he cherishes.
“I love making a good pasta sauce, and if time allows, making and rolling my own pasta, raviolis and gnocchi, that’s the sort of stuff I love doing – creating some of those Italian foods that you just can’t buy off the shelf.”
In Nick, Townsville has a mayor forged by wide-open cane fields, bustling family kitchens, and the rhythms of North Queensland life. Hard work, loyalty, and a deep respect for community aren’t just values; they’re a way of being. Whether he’s rolling ravioli at home or guiding the city through change, Nick brings the same steady, wholehearted energy to everything he does.

HANNAH MCNAMARA
Excitement is already building across the region as planning officially gets underway for the 2026 Mayor’s Charity Ball, with organisers promising an even bigger and better event following last year’s outstanding success.
The 2025 Mayor’s Charity Ball was held at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre on Saturday, May 10, delivering a glamorous red-carpet evening that brought together local businesses, community leaders and supporters for a collective cause.
The event raised more than $50,000, with funds presented to Grapevine Group and The Salvation Army at a special sponsors’ morning tea on May 28, 2025.
A number of sponsors have already recommitted to the event, with Fergus Builders, Daly Bay and BMA confirmed as Platinum Sponsors. Mickala Group has also come on board as a new Platinum sponsor for 2026.
Organisers also acknowledged the many returning sponsors who have once again thrown their support behind the Ball including Pentacon,
CQ Soil Testing, North Queensland Bulk Ports, Seven News Mackay, Tropical Exposure, Hit Mackay and Triple M, Signarama and Twilight Events.
Building on last year’s tour of The Neighbourhood Hub on George Street in November, the Mayor, event committee and sponsors recently gathered to gain valuable insight into the important work being delivered by staff and volunteers on the ground. The visit also marked the official announcement of the two beneficiary charities for the 2026 Mayor’s Charity Ball.
The Neighbourhood Community Hub’s Second Bite Program was revealed as a new charity partner, while The Salvation Army’s Family Violence Service will return for its second year, continuing the Ball’s two-year charity support model.
The Mayor’s Charity Ball has raised more than $1 million since its inception and is on track for another successful event in 2026.
Mayor Greg Williamson said the Ball is “one of the biggest community fundraisers we run from
a council perspective, and we’ve always delivered fantastic funding to really worthy community causes.
“The two charities we’re supporting at the moment are incredibly deserving.”
He said the goal for 2026 was to lift the event to an even higher level.
“We’re aiming to deliver the biggest and best Mayor’s Charity Ball this year, and we can’t do it without media partners like you,” he said, with Life Publishing Group proudly coming on board as the event’s exclusive print media partner for 2026.
It’s safe to say the 2026 Mayor’s Charity Ball is shaping up to be another unforgettable night that blends entertainment, generosity and community impact, all under the one roof of the Mackay Entertainment & Convention Centre.

Over the past 12 months, Stephanie McWhirter and her team at Belle Property Whitsundays have experienced a year of tremendous momentum, one marked by organic growth, strong community connection, and a shared sense of purpose that continues to define their success.
The business has gone from strength to strength, with the rental portfolio growing organically to nearly 100 properties, adding a new dimension to what was already a vibrant and high-performing team. Stephanie attributes this success not just to strategy or numbers, but to culture, which is the heart and soul of the Belle Whitsundays office.
“I’m so proud of the culture we’re creating,” Stephanie shares. “We’ve built this team around trust, consistency, and care. I’m so thankful to our community and clients who choose to work with us, they’re the reason we’re able to do what we love every day.”
For Stephanie, real estate isn’t complicated when you focus on what truly matters. Her philosophy is refreshingly simple:
“Real estate doesn’t have to be hard. If you’re consistent, tell the truth, and do what you say you’re going to do, you can have a wonderful, exciting, and rewarding career.”
Stephanie had dreamed of leadership and business ownership for a long time. The reality, she says, has been even better than she imagined. Leadership, for her, isn’t about titles or accolades it’s about people.
“A great leader steps back when things are going well and steps forward when there’s conflict. If you’re lucky enough to be in a position to help others achieve their goals, remember that people are often far more capable and valuable than you think.”
That belief is reflected in her dynamic and supportive team. Each member contributes their own strengths, united by a shared ambition to grow, achieve, and inspire. She also wishes to acknowledge and thank her fiancé and biggest supporter, Adam Webster, whose unwavering belief and encouragement have been a constant source of strength throughout the journey. As they look ahead, the Belle Property Whitsundays team remains focused on their vision: to be the leading real estate office in the region, welcoming more people along for the exciting journey ahead.

In 2026, Payne Print & Sign will mark an extraordinary milestone of 50 years in business, celebrating half a century of craftsmanship, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the Mackay community. What began as a humble family dream has grown into one of the region’s most respected print and signage businesses, built on hard work, loyalty, and a deep belief in doing things properly.
The Payne story in Mackay began well before the business itself. In 1970, Tom and Grace Payne moved their young family from Toowoomba to Mackay, drawn by opportunity and a desire to build a future in a growing regional centre. Tom took up work with a local printing company, honing his craft while quietly nurturing a bigger vision.
That vision became reality in 1976, when Tom and Grace established Payne Print, working alongside two family members. The early years were demanding, filled with long hours, modest returns, and relentless dedication, but momentum soon followed. By the early 1980s, all four Payne siblings, Kerry, Karen, Lyn, and John, had joined the business, and additional
staff were required to keep pace with growing demand.
Growth came not just from skill, but from courage. Tom and Grace personally travelled west of Mackay, introducing Payne Print’s services to mining companies at a time when the region’s resource sector was beginning to boom. Their hands-on approach paid off. By 1986, the business had expanded to a team of 12, requiring the purchase of larger premises to support its future.
The turn of the millennium brought further expansion, with mining contracts flowing in and investment in new machinery and staff becoming essential. Then, in 2008, disaster struck when the Turner Street factory was devastated by flooding. True to the Payne spirit, the business rebuilt, emerging stronger, with new equipment and renewed determination.
Around 2010, Tom stepped into retirement, entrusting the business he built with such care to his family and loyal employees. That trust proved well placed. Payne Print continued to thrive, guided by the values Tom instilled from day one of honesty, craftsmanship, and exceptional

service.
Community has always been central to the Payne ethos. The business has long supported charities, sporting clubs, and local organisations, a commitment recognised in 2016 when Payne Print won the Resource Industry Network Award for Connecting with the Community.
In 2018, the business took another significant step forward, expanding into signage and formally becoming Payne Print & Sign. The move allowed the company to offer complete print and signage solutions, combining traditional expertise with modern digital and large-format capabilities, a decision that has proven pivotal to its continued success.
From Tom’s earliest days, working with little more than a second-hand guillotine and a Platen Letterpress machine, to today’s state-of-the-art operation, quality has never been compromised. Stories still circulate of Tom working through the night to meet a deadline, a standard of excellence that remains deeply ingrained in the business today.
Continued . . .

Now, approaching its 50th year, Payne Print & Sign employs 28 dedicated staff, servicing clients across Mackay, the Whitsundays, and the Coalfields. Many of the company’s earliest clients, particularly within the mining sector, remain loyal supporters, a testament to relationships built on trust and reliability.
Though Tom, Grace, and John have since passed, their legacy lives on in every project completed, every client relationship maintained, and every employee who carries their vision forward. They would be immensely proud of what Payne Print & Sign has become.
As the business looks ahead to the next chapter, one thing remains unchanged: Payne Print & Sign is, at its heart, a family business, grounded in tradition, driven by innovation, and deeply connected to the community it has proudly served for five decades.
Here’s to 50 years of print, people, and pride and many more to come.

Congratulations to Payne Print on your 50th Anniversary. Thank you for many years of excellent service.

The Festive Season has been and gone, with its familiar rhythm. That frenzy of activity as we try to get work and family organized in the lead up, and then the beautiful relax as we kick back for a well-deserved break with family and friends.
With most having at least a week off and starting to slow down over Xmas, our thoughts often reflect on the last 12 months as we come to the big reset that is New Year’s Eve. It’s a good time to look backwards and reflect but also to look forwards and plan, when our mind has had Xmas to wind down from the daily grind and we can think clearly.
The trick with those New Years resolutions is to actually follow them through. We go back to work and progressively get wound back up and all those resolutions get steamrolled by ‘life’. The key is to do something small and quick before it’s too late.
They say a journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. The smaller that first step the better. If you want to get fitter, call the Personal Trainer or gym and book that first trial session. If you want to play sport, drop down to that first training session. Just starting creates momentum as you meet people, and that connection helps build on your internal commitment to coming back.
If you want to change something financially, book that first meeting with your financial planner, accountant, or mortgage broker. If you plan on doing some research prior to the meeting, book the appointment first. Once you’ve made that first appointment you’re committed. You will still have time before that appointment to read through their website and do your research.

Plan your retirement, review your protection strategy on your super pension, minimize your tax, reduce your loan interest, get a better super fund, get fitter, build your social network. We all know we should do these sorts of things.
One of the many things events like cyclones teach us, is not to take what we have for granted. You never know when it would be taken away or severely affected by factors out of your control.
Make 2026 the year you make that move.
If you’d like an obligation free review of your financial situation, call us for an appointment today.

Lowcock Builders’ Carwash Whitsundays project has been recognised as an award-winning benchmark for innovation, quality and execution, taking out the Retail Facilities up to $5 million category at the 2025 Master Builders Queensland Mackay and Whitsunday Housing and Construction Awards.
The accolade marks a significant milestone for the Bowen-based construction company, with the Carwash Whitsundays development representing Lowcock Builders’ first purpose-built carwash facility. The project not only expanded the company’s commercial construction portfolio but also demonstrated its ability to successfully deliver specialised infrastructure through collaboration, adaptability and meticulous project management.
Designed to meet the growing needs of the Whitsundays community, the modern facility features three manual wash bays, two automatic laser carwash bays, four vacuum stations and two dedicated dog wash areas. Supporting infrastructure includes a staffroom, a mezzanine plant room, pump and services shed, landscaped gardens and clearly marked entry, exit and parking zones, creating

a streamlined and user-friendly experience for customers.
From the outset, Lowcock Builders worked closely with the private commercial client to bring their vision to life, offering cost-effective solutions, alternative materials and thoughtful design refinements to ensure the project met both budget and operational goals. The build was delivered within the client’s desired timeframe, with the team going above and beyond when external power connection delays threatened to impact opening. In a proactive move, Lowcock Builders sourced a generator to allow the facility to open without further disruption.
Underpinning the project’s success was the company’s robust Quality, Environmental and Safety Management Systems, certified to ISO standards, ensuring a high-quality finish with no outstanding defects or safety incidents.
Winning the Retail Facilities award is a testament to the collective effort of the Lowcock Builders team, subcontractors and suppliers, and reinforces the company’s reputation for delivering high-performing, community-focused commercial projects.

Lowcock Builders concluded 2025 with the successful completion of VaultX Storage, a striking new self-storage facility in Bowen that is already redefining expectations for secure, modern storage in North Queensland.

With residential growth, business expansion and lifestyle travel on the rise across the region, VaultX Storage was designed to provide a flexible, secure solution for individuals and businesses alike.
The modern facility offers 24/7 access, personal PIN code entry and comprehensive security features including CCTV surveillance, high fencing and security lighting, ensuring peace of mind for users at all hours. Inside,

Across every tier of management, Imposter Syndrome sits like a quiet assassin. Hate to say it, however, it doesn’t magically disappear as you climb higher; it just gets more creative. Executive Imposter Syndrome just has better vocabulary and access to better coffee.
At entry level, it shows up as the constant need to double-check every email, apologise for having an opinion, and they end up leading defensively.
At middle-management tier, Imposter Syndrome becomes a full-blown circus. These teammembers are managing up, down, sideways, diagonally— tying themselves in knots while quietly thinking, “Any minute now, someone’s going to realise I’m winging 40% of this job.” They’re the ones showing up to meetings with coffee-fuelled enthusiasm masking mid-level panic.
At the executive level it can resemble a world of big titles, bigger responsibilities, and even bigger self-doubt. They look confident because they’ve mastered the art of saying things decisively. Their Imposter Syndrome is just better dressed, shakes hands firmly, and nods at strategy documents like it

Judy Porter Leadership and Workplace Culture Specialist at Shiift
understands them. But it still whispers at 3am: “Hope no one notices you Googled half the words you used today.”
The truth? Imposter Syndrome is universal. If anything, the higher people climb, the lonelier it gets— and the less safe it feels to say, “I don’t know.”
Research suggests up to 82% of people in management experience Imposter Syndrome at some stage. The trick to managing Imposter Syndrome isn’t “being more confident”—it’s calling out your brain’s negative self-talk. Start by naming it when it shows up: “Ah yes, my internal troll has logged on.” Then reality-check your thoughts—evidence beats emotion every time. Stop comparing your behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s ‘highlight reel’ and ask for help when you need it. High performers aren’t the ones who know everything; they’re the ones who stay curious, learn out loud, and keep moving anyway. Imposter Syndrome doesn’t disappear—you just get better at not letting it drive the bus. Name it, Challenge it! However, maybe the problem isn’t that people doubt themselves. Maybe the real problem is workplaces pretending everyone shouldn’t.

START 2026 WITH A FRESH, STYLISH UPGRADE. www.vogueinteriorswhitsunday.com.au
DIY - whether it’s a kitchen refresh, furniture makeover or weekend craft – can be an experience that is deeply rewarding. Budgeting, when managing one’s own affairs, is incredibly important, to prevent the dangerous financial spiral that leaves a big empty hole in your wallet. Smart budgeting and informed spending is vital to ensuring a DIY project will receive maximum results from the effort. Starting with a detailed plan and realistic budget can make all the difference, avoiding costly. Here are several ways to ensure you can make good budget decisions to see the DIY dream come true.
Accurate estimating is the backbone of any solid DIY project. Without it, such DIY dreams could remain a fantasy. Accurate estimating means calculating all costs upfront. It means paying special detail to prices, accessibility, affordability, measurements and time constraints. Though a possibly monotonous process, extra preparation can ensure that the actual project runs as smoothly

as possible.
Every DIY project is different, no doubt due to real world conditions. Whilst a dream can stay perfect in the imagination, it is important to measure expectations with any challenges the real world may present. This means looking at prices based on availability and forecasting any potentially increase or decrease in accessibility and affordability.
No two DIY projects are the same. The first and most important step in any budget is clarity. Defining that scope along with requirements and deliverables can bring more cohesion to a project, ensuring that the expectations are sound.
Even with five star preparation and planning, things can still go wrong. Allocating part of the budget to handle delays, price spikes or design changes can give breathing room and prevent the project from derailing.

• Using large sliding doors and floor-to-ceiling windows provides indoor spaces with lots of natural light.
• High ceilings maximise your home’s natural flow, opening up the living space and creating a seamless, effortless connection between indoors and out.
• Clear sightlines from inside to outside create a strong visual connection, allowing uninterrupted views from one end of the home through to the garden or outdoor living area. Ensure your outdoor furniture complements your indoor pieces to maintain a consistent aesthetic, ensuring both spaces work together in style and function.
• Treat your patio or deck as an extension of your living space by incorporating comfortable seating, an outdoor dining area or even a kitchen, creating a seamless indoor–outdoor lifestyle.
Indoor-outdoor living is especially popular in the tropics for a variety of reasons.
Natural Ventilation and Cooling: Tropical climates are characterised by high temperatures and humidity. Seamless transitions, using features like large windows, sliding doors, and open floor plans, allow for maximum crossventilation and air flow, which naturally cools interior spaces and reduces reliance on energyintensive mechanical cooling systems (like air conditioning).
Thermal Comfort and Shading: Covered terraces, verandas, and pergolas act as transitional semi-outdoor spaces, filtering UV rays and providing essential shade from the intense sun while still allowing air movement. These areas create comfortable temperatures whilst offering protection from sun and rain while maintaining
an open-air ambiance.
Lifestyle and Well-being: The mild year-round temperatures in tropical regions encourage an outdoor lifestyle. Blurring the boundaries between inside and outside promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and improves overall well-being by providing constant access to natural light, greenery, and fresh air.
Expanded Living Space: These transitions effectively extend the functional living areas of a home. A covered patio or deck becomes an outdoor living room, dining area, or kitchen, offering flexible and adaptable spaces for social interaction and everyday activities.
Aesthetic and Cultural Appeal: This design philosophy connects you with the lush surrounding landscape and natural beauty, which is a significant part of the region’s appeal.

The key to a gorgeous, liveable backyard often begins with nailing the aesthetic elements. But the real secret to unlocking its full potential lies in creating zones, layers, and experiences that invite you to relax, reconnect with nature, and make the most of every square metre.
In With the New
Latest garden trends favour softness, natural flow, and comfort, moving away from strict minimalism. Taking its place is soft modernism, a fusion of structured elements with plant movement and texture to create soulful, inviting outdoor spaces.
To achieve this feel in your own backyard:
• ZONE YOUR SPACE FOR PURPOSE & FLOW
Rather than having one big, undefined plot, divide your backyard into distinct areas; lounge, dining, play, garden nook, etc. Use changes in flooring
(decking, gravel, grass), planters, or pergolas to visually separate zones without building walls, adding function while also making your backyard feel larger and smarter.
• ADD AMBIENT LIGHTING
String lights, lanterns, or subtle LED path lighting can transform the mood after sunset. Good lighting highlights key features and extends the usability of your backyard well into the evening.
• INCORPORATE WATER FEATURES
A small fountain, bubbling pot, or pond serves as a background soundtrack, visual element, and stress reliever all rolled into one, setting a relaxing undertone to any gathering.
• EMBRACE SUSTAINABLE & NATURAL ELEMENTS
Use drought-tolerant natives, recycled materials, and permeable pavers to support sustainability
without sacrificing design. Loosen the reins on structure to create a more biodiverse, lively space.
• COMFORTABLE OUTDOOR LIVING
Think of your backyard as an extension of your home. Add comfy loungers, a fire pit gathering area, or a dining nook under shade sails or a pergola. Mix furniture materials for visual depth, and include soft textiles that withstand the weather.
• VERTICAL GREENERY
Use walls, trellises, or hanging planters to maximise green without eating up floor space— great for smaller yards or creating privacy screens.
Incorporate these tips to stay ahead of the curve, with a backyard that not only appears stunning and organised, but genuinely is.

Understanding the Truth Behind the “Lack of Research” Claim
Health professionals often warn patients—especially pregnant women and oncology patients— against using natural therapies such as Chinese herbal medicine (CHM). The usual justification is “there’s no research” or “we can’t guarantee safety.”
This statement is partly true, but it’s also incomplete and can unintentionally mislead people about the actual evidence.
Below is a balanced, evidence-driven overview.
Strict medical risk-management
In pregnancy and oncology, clinicians operate under the highest medicolegal scrutiny. If something hasn’t been validated by large, Western-style clinical trials, it’s placed in the “avoid” category—even if there is no evidence of harm
Ethical limitations on conducting trials
pharmacology draw very clear distinctions between contraindicated herbs, cautionary herbs, safe and commonly used herbs and supportive herbs for specific stages of pregnancy or cancer treatment
This nuance is often lost in mainstream commentary.
Chinese Herbal Medicine in Pregnancy
What the Claim Gets Wrong
Pregnant women have been treated with CHM for over 2,000 years
Chinese medicine has one of the oldest obstetric traditions in the world, with entire classical texts dedicated to threatened miscarriage, morning sickness, restless fetus, bleeding, hypertension of pregnancy, breech presentations and postpartum recovery
These writings specify exactly which herbs are safe and which are not.
Modern studies do exist
Large registry-based studies in China and Taiwan show no increase in adverse outcomes when pregnancysafe formulas are properly prescribed.
In cancer care, the statement “there’s no research” becomes even less accurate.
Oncology is one of the most researched areas of CHM
There are thousands of published studies, randomised controlled trials, meta-analyses, network pharmacology analyses, molecular docking studies, and bench research on apoptosis, autophagy, angiogenesis, and immune modulation. There are also integrative oncology clinical trials in China, Japan, and increasingly the West. Many hospitals in China and Europe run integrative oncology departments where CHM is routine.
What the research consistently shows
Improved quality of life less fatigue, better digestive tolerance, reduced anxiety and insomnia, and improved appetite.
Reduced chemotherapy side effects
Certain formulas have evidence for reducing nausea, neuropathy, mucositis, bone marrow suppression, and gut damage.
Ethnopharmacology, and others. Safety concerns come from wrong herb–drug combinations, not CHM itself
The risk in oncology is not that CHM is inherently dangerous. The real risks are taking highantioxidant supplements during radiation, using blood-moving herbs during thrombocytopenia, using immunostimulants during autoimmune oncological conditions, and using random herbs purchased online with no understanding of interaction pathways.
A qualified integrative oncology practitioner knows when CHM should

You cannot ethically randomize pregnant women or cancer patients into placebo vs. active herbal treatment groups. This means Limited RCTs, more observational and cohort studies and heavy reliance on historical empirical data. Many pharmaceutical drugs used routinely in pregnancy and oncology (e.g. antiemetics, antidepressants) also lack long-term trials for this reason.
The absence of RCTs is not the same as evidence of danger.
Lumping all herbs into one risk category
Many clinicians know little about CHM. So herbs are treated as “all the same,” despite the fact that traditional texts, pharmacopeias, and modern
Examples of researched areas include nausea and vomiting; recurrent miscarriage (tonification strategies), anxiety and insomnia, digestive issues, postpartum healing and lactation support.
The real risk is self-prescription, not practitioner-guided care
Dangers arise when women use online formulas, “detox” herbs, strong purgatives, and unregulated supplements. A qualified practitioner avoids all contraindicated substances and adjusts dosage appropriately.
Chinese Herbal Medicine in Oncology
A Very Different, but Equally Misunderstood Landscape
The Key Distinction: Safety Comes From Professional Oversight
Enhanced immune function herbs regulate macrophages, NK cells, T cells, and inflammatory cytokines.
Potential synergistic anti-tumour activity Multiple studies demonstrate that herbal compounds increase apoptosis, reduce angiogenesis, modulate tumour microenvironment, inhibit metastasis pathways, enhance chemotherapy responsiveness, and reduce treatment-related resistance.
This is not fringe science; it appears in journals such as Research, Frontiers in Oncology, Integrative Cancer Therapies, Journal of
Natural medicine is not inherently “unsafe.” Herbs are not inherently “risky.”
Pregnancy and cancer are not inherently “herb-free zones.” The issue is context, training, and individualisation.
When CHM is prescribed by a registered practitioner, tailored to the patient, adjusted for trimester or treatment cycle, selected to avoid herb–drug interactions, and monitored systematically, it has a strong safety record and a meaningful evidence base
A More Accurate, Evidence-Aligned Statement
A fairer, scientifically sound message is: “Chinese herbal medicine should not be used casually in pregnancy or cancer care, but when prescribed by a qualified practitioner—especially one trained in obstetrics or integrative oncology—it can be safe, welltolerated, and clinically beneficial.”

Beauty, once defined by rigid ideals and singular approaches, is undergoing a quiet but powerful evolution. Today’s beauty landscape is no longer split into opposing camps of “natural” versus “chemical.”
Instead, modern beauty embraces a more nuanced philosophy; one that recognises the value of nature’s wisdom while celebrating the precision and progress of science. The result is a balanced, thoughtful approach that delivers results without sacrificing wellbeing.
Over the course of several decades, beauty trends swung between extremes. On one end were formulations rooted in nature: botanical oils, plant extracts, clays and minerals, prized for their gentleness and holistic appeal. On the other were highly engineered products promising dramatic results through laboratory-created actives. Consumers were often led to believe they had to choose between purity or performance, tradition or innovation.
But the modern beauty consumer is more informed, curious and discerning. We now understand that “natural” does not automatically mean safer or more effective, just as “chemical” does not inherently mean harsh or harmful. In reality, everything is chemical at its core, even something as pure as water itself. What matters is how ingredients are sourced, formulated, tested and combined.

It also enables the development of ingredients that nature alone cannot provide, such as peptides, ceramides and encapsulated retinoids, which target specific concerns like ageing, pigmentation and skin repair with remarkable precision.
This synergy between nature and science represents the best of both worlds. Natural ingredients offer comfort, nourishment and a sense of connection to the earth, while scientific advancements provide measurable results and long-term skin health. Together, they create formulas that are both kind and clever supporting the skin rather than overwhelming it.
Modern beauty also reflects a broader shift in how we view health and self-care. Skincare is no longer about quick fixes or aggressive treatments; it’s about longevity, resilience and balance. People are prioritising skin barrier health, inflammation control and microbiome support; areas where nature-inspired ingredients and clinically proven actives work beautifully side by side. The focus has moved from perfection to vitality, from masking flaws to supporting natural function.
Transparency has become another defining feature of this evolution. Consumers want to know not only what’s

Ever wondered what your smile, glow, and glossy locks are trying to tell you? Hair, skin and teeth are not just beauty boosters. They are powerful indicators of your overall health. When these features are thriving, it often means your internal systems are working well too. When they struggle, they can quietly signal that something is out of balance. From nutrient intake to stress levels and underlying health conditions, these everyday features offer surprisingly useful clues. Think of them as friendly health detectives that just happen to be on display every day. Let’s explore why they matter so much.

Hair is made primarily of keratin, a protein that relies on adequate nutrition and good circulation to grow strong and healthy. Changes in hair texture, thickness or shine can reflect what is happening inside your body. Hair thinning, excessive shedding, texture changes or dryness may be linked to stress, iron deficiency, hormonal changes or illness. Because hair growth is not essential for survival, the body often diverts nutrients away from it when under pressure. This makes hair one of the first places health changes can appear.
Hair also plays a protective role by shielding the scalp from UV exposure and helping regulate temperature. While styling trends come and go, consistently healthy hair often points to balanced hormones and proper nutrient intake. If your hair suddenly changes, it may be worth looking beyond your shampoo and considering your overall health, as those good or bad hair days might be telling you more than you think.
Your skin is your body’s largest organ and its first line of defence. It protects you from bacteria, helps regulate body temperature, prevents excessive moisture loss and allows you to feel the world around you. Healthy skin often reflects good hydration, balanced nutrition and effective internal systems. Dryness may point to dehydration, while dullness can be linked to poor nutrition or lack of sleep. Sudden breakouts or rashes may be connected to stress, hormonal changes or food sensitivities. Even slow wound healing can suggest problems with circulation or nutrient intake. Conditions such as eczema or acne are sometimes linked to immune or gut health as well. Sun protection and consistent skincare are not just cosmetic habits. They support healthy daily routines and help prevent long-term damage, premature ageing and skin cancers. When your skin looks calm, resilient and radiant, it is often a sign your body is well supported.

Your teeth and gums are more than tools for chewing and flashing a confident smile. They play a vital role in overall health. Good oral hygiene helps control harmful bacteria and prevents plaque build-up, which can lead to cavities, tooth decay and gum disease. What many people do not realise is that gum inflammation has been linked to wider health concerns, including heart disease and diabetes.
Bacteria from infected gums can enter the bloodstream and contribute to inflammation elsewhere in the body. Issues such as persistent bad breath, bleeding gums or sensitive teeth can also hint at nutritional deficiencies or immune problems. Looking after your teeth supports digestion, confidence and overall wellbeing. A strong, healthy smile is often a sign that the rest of your body is being well cared for too.

Alone yet never lonely quickly became the anthem of solo travellers across the globe, with younger generations taking advantage of the flexible travel style postpandemic.
A concept defined by freedom, self-discovery and personalised experiences, the trend of traveling solo rapidly gained traction among Generation Z, with travellers sharing experiences online across social media.
Solo travel embraces flexibility and independence, allowing travellers to move at their own pace, and on their own terms. Slowing down and creating unique experiences has allowed solo travellers to move with mindfulness, and the embedded independence has led travellers to subconsciously discover the world with an openness to form new connections with likeminded demographics. As a result, experience-based travel companies have since introduced tailored offerings like solo traveller only tours, or activities closed off to a niche

audience, like solo women within a certain age group.
Hostel culture has also boomed alongside the popularity of solo travel, with travellers flocking to social hostels designed to foster community, to meet, connect and share experiences with each other and form a family together on the opposite side of the globe.
When a trend shifts from niche to mainstream, it’s common for misconceptions and criticism to surface. Over the past decade, the same question continues to cycle its way through social media channels, with introverts asking seasoned solo travellers if they must be extroverted to enjoy the experience… the answer, a hard no.
Ultimately, solo travel has proven to be less about being alone and more about choosing your own rhythm. Whether you’re an introvert or extrovert, confident or quietly curious, travelling solo offers space to grow, connect and belong in ways that feel natural. In a world craving authenticity, solo travel isn’t a trend — it’s a mindset.
