Our Story
Fifty-three students started their secondary school journey at Luther College on Tuesday 11 February 1964. Now, over sixty years later, we continue to provide educational excellence and outstanding opportunities for young people.
Led by Pastor Walter Paech, the College was established by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia (ELCA) as part of a national strategy to expand the church’s provision of schooling. Our extensive 30-hectare site in Croydon Hills became the perfect location for the third Lutheran school in Australia and the first in Victoria.
The College is named after Martin Luther (1483-1546), the German theologian whose courage and faith sparked the Protestant Reformation. Luther championed education for all, translated the Bible into the common language, and believed learning should develop the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. These principles continue to guide our educational philosophy today.
With a handful of classrooms, a hall, administration area, two boarding houses,
and staff residences, foundation Headmaster Pastor John Paech, his wife Edna and a dedicated team delivered a curriculum including Doctrine, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Latin, German, Art, and Music, alongside athletics, tennis, cricket, and softball.
Named after local waterways, Warran and Yarra were our foundation Houses. As enrolments grew, we expanded to six Houses. Birt, Cheong, Nelson, Warran, Wicklow, and Yarra, providing pastoral care for every student.
Lutheran schools educate over 40,000 students throughout Australia and many more internationally. Known for delivering values-based education for the whole child.

The
Luther College crest and motto were developed by our founders in 1962, along with the school colours of blue, red and white.
Written in Latin, the College motto, Unctio Eius Docet, was taken from 1 John 2:27 which indirectly translates to The Holy Spirit is our Teacher These words remind us that we operate under the guidance and teaching of the Holy Spirit.
The crest incorporates a shield with an open Bible, a dove, and a scroll bearing our motto. The letters on the Bible, Alpha and Omega, are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet and refer to the beginning and the end, a name given to Christ.
The open Bible symbolises the source of all learning while the dove symbolises the Holy Spirit and the shield represents faith.
Mission and Ministry
Luther College, as a school of the Lutheran Church of Australia, shares a recognisable Lutheran identity which informs all teaching and learning, relationships, and activities across the school.
Our community is actively involved in Christian worship with regular devotions and Christian Studies which are included in our curriculum.
Luther College values diversity and lives out the gospel in active service of others. The multi-cultural and multi-faith nature of Lutheran education welcomes and fosters understanding of diverse cultures.
Lutheran education promotes the understanding of, and respect for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Chapel Program
Our Chapel program offers students a variety of ways to participate in devotion and exploration of faith and values in action. Delivered by a range of presenters including our College Pastor, Director of Faith and Formation, College Chaplain, staff, students and visitors, the program offers students time and space to reflect. Luther College deliberately shares and lives the good news of Jesus Christ with students, families, staff and the broader community.
Ignite@Luther
Ignite@Luther is a student led, monthly Sunday afternoon worship opportunity for young people and their families to come together over prayer, music, food and conversation. At its heart, Ignite is about living with authentic faith, building genuine Christian community. All in our community are welcome.
Australian Lutheran World Service
The Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) is the overseas aid and development agency of the Lutheran Church of Australia and New Zealand. It provides programs which welcome, respect and bring hope through care to those fleeing from, or hurt by, disaster, conflict, poverty, or oppression. Luther College is a proud supporter of ALWS and participates in fundraising year-round.

Innovation in practice
How do we teach for certainty and uncertainty at once? We know our students will need to navigate AI, collaborate globally, solve emerging problems, and adapt through multiple career shifts. But how do we give them solid foundations while also building their capacity to learn for a future that does not yet exist?
Our answer isn’t a single program. It’s giving people permission to experiment with new approaches, and equally important, permission to learn from failures.
How this works
Any staff member can pitch an idea, a new approach, a different way to structure a lesson, or technology worth testing. If it has potential, we invest in it. Some ideas scale across the whole school, others teach us why they don’t work, which matters just as much. Students are involved too, not as passive recipients but as co-creators.
The TED Hub and ASPIRE programs emerged from this approach.

ASPIRE
ASPIRE (Advanced Support Program and Individual Recognition of Excellence) supports students pursuing excellence in performing arts or sport at competitive levels outside school.
We recognise these students face unique pressures, balancing intensive training or performance schedules with academic demands. ASPIRE connects them with dedicated pastoral care and practical support to manage both successfully.
Students also access development opportunities including the Thrive Global program at Monash Business School, workshops, and guest speakers focused on high-performance psychology, resilience, and mindset skills - the mental tools that sustain excellence over time.
Partnerships
Our students don’t just learn about the world, they engage with it directly through active partnerships that create real opportunities.
Sister schools in China and Germany
Students can spend time learning about China and Germany through our partnerships with Nanjing Number 12 Middle School and Evangelisches Gymnasium Hermannswerder. These partnerships provide students with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of different cultures, traditions, lifestyles and global issues, as well as enhance their language skills. Mutual school visits are also a highlight, with opportunities for a reciprocal homestay in Germany. The College also works in partnership with Bayerischer Jugendring (BJR) to give students additional opportunities for exchange.
Yirara College, Alice Springs
Every year, a group of Year 11 students undertaking Aboriginal Cultural Studies travel to Yirara College, a boarding school for Indigenous students run by the Finke River Mission. Students learn directly from Yirara students and staff, gaining perspectives on Indigenous education, culture, and contemporary issues that can’t be replicated in a classroom.
Universities
We’ve built working relationships with Monash University, the University of Melbourne and Deakin University. This means students have opportunities to access relevant programs, university researchers visit our classrooms, and our senior students engage with cuttingedge thinking in their areas of interest before they leave school. Significant professional development opportunities are also available to staff as a result of these partnerships.
Teaching and Learning

Deep Learning

Creativity and Passion
Our state-of-the-art Centre for Creativity and Innovation together with Makerlab subjects in our Middle Years, provide opportunities for students to explore their creativity and pursue individual passions. This hands-on, experiential learning fosters innovation and entrepreneurial thinking.

The comprehensive curriculum spans nine key learning areas, offering both core subjects and diverse electives that enable each student to pursue their unique interests and strengths. Combined with our strong pastoral care program, the College provides an environment where academic excellence and personal wellbeing go hand in hand.
English
English is at the heart of every student’s learning journey at the College. From Year 7–12, students develop their skills in critical analysis, creative expression, and effective communication. In addition to English at VCE, students can also undertake Literature.
Mathematics
Mathematics includes Challenge and Mastery classes in Year 7–10, using differentiated learning to support and challenge students to achieve their best.
At VCE, General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics are available. The College also offers a Maths Homework Club to assist and support students to achieve their goals in Mathematics.
Science
Science at the College is about curiosity, discovery, and asking “what if?”. From Years 7–10, students build foundational knowledge, with opportunities to explore and experiment. In VCE we offer Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Physics, and Environmental Science. Beyond the classroom, students can join our thriving STEAM club or use our cutting-edge robotic telescope technologies to explore the cosmos.
Technologies
Technologies equips students with the skills to imagine, design, and create solutions to real-world problems. Through Design Technology, Food Studies, and Digital Technology, students engage with laser cutting, 3D modelling, timber and metal construction, coding, software development, robotics, and the science of food.
Humanities and Social Sciences
From exploring ancient civilizations to debating contemporary global issues, Humanities and Social Sciences help students make sense of the world around them. Years 7–10 cover Economics and Business, Civics and Citizenship, Geography, and History, while VCE offerings expand to include Global Politics, Legal Studies and more.
The Arts
The Arts at Luther College are expansive and exploratory, encompassing music, theatre, dance, visual communication, architectural and industrial design, illustration, ceramics, and numerous other two- and three-dimensional mediums. Whether students are composing, performing, designing, or creating, they engage in processes of experimentation, and provocation that develop their creative thinking and self-expression.
Health and Physical Education
Health and Physical Education (HPE) goes beyond fitness—it’s about developing the knowledge, skills, and habits that support lifelong wellbeing. From Years 7–10, students build a foundation for physical activity and health literacy. VCE options include Health and Physical Education, Outdoor and Environmental Studies, and Health and Human Development. Our HPE program prepares students not just for sport, but for an active, healthy lifestyle that will serve them well beyond their years at Luther.
Languages German and Chinese (Mandarin)
In an increasingly interconnected world, language learning opens windows to new cultures, perspectives, and opportunities. All students in Years 7-9 study either German or Chinese Mandarin, with Chinese Mandarin Background also available. Both languages are available as electives in Year 10 and VCE. Luther’s international partnerships with sister schools bring language learning to life through German and Chinese language tours, cultural immersion excursions, and exchanges.
Christian Studies
Christian Studies provides a welcoming space for students to explore diverse worldviews, ethical questions, and what it means to live with purpose and compassion. Students come from a wide range of religious and non-religious backgrounds, and it is through this diversity our program flourishes.
In Year 9, students undertake The Rite Journey, a year-long program designed to build self-awareness, responsibility, respect, resilience, and resourcefulness, culminating in a transformative camp experience that marks their passage toward young adulthood.
The College offers VCE Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects in Year 11 and 12, which may contribute to the student’s ATAR score.
VET subjects help students to develop skills for use in the workforce and obtain a nationally recognised qualification.
Enhanced Learning Centre
The Enhanced Learning Centre (ELC) collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to identify and implement strategies for students requiring significant curriculum adjustments. This approach fosters independence, social responsibility, and academic growth through differentiated curriculum delivery and individualised learning pathways.
Middle Years Support
Literacy Enhancement Lessons (LEL) are designed for students with diagnosed Specific Learning Disabilities in reading and/or writing. These lessons focus on:
• Developing literacy and communication skills
• Pre-teaching content from English, Humanities, and Science
• Building executive functioning skills (organisation, planning, time management)
• Exploring assistive technologies
Students in LEL do not study a language subject and have Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) with recommended adjustments. LEL provides targeted support to help students access the curriculum effectively, rather than intensive intervention.
Learning Plus (LP) and additional services include in-class support from experienced ELC staff, study skills sessions, and teacher guidance on supporting diverse learning needs.
Senior Years
The Multimodal Communication Unit prepares students for VCE by developing confidence and skills for complex academic tasks. This includes the use of assistive technology, preteaching English content, and strengthening study techniques and executive functioning.

Pastoral Care and Wellbeing
When students feel they belong, everything else follows. That’s why pastoral care isn’t just one program at Luther College - it’s the cornerstone of everything we do.
At Luther, we believe that young people thrive when they feel safe, when they know they belong, and when they know support is always there. This is how we create a path to an exceptional future, one that’s unique to each student, whatever direction that may take.
From the moment your child joins our community, they become part of something bigger than a year level or a classroom. Through our vertical House system, students from Year 7 to Year 12 form partnerships, siblings stay connected and everyone belongs.
Each House is led by a Head of House and a team of Home Group Mentors who know our students and what they need to flourish. This care continues through our Wellbeing Centre offering counselling and psychological support, and our RESPECT@Luther program, which teaches students to build healthy relationships, take accountability, and resolve conflict in ways that strengthen rather than damage connection.
As part of our broader wellbeing framework, trained Wellbeing Dogs work on campus and are an established part of our community.
Wellbeing Dogs are widely recognised for their capacity to:
• reduce stress and anxiety
• support emotional regulation
• improve focus, engagement and behaviour
• build self-esteem and confidence
• foster a sense of belonging and connection
• provide gentle social-emotional support to students and staff when appropriate
Wellbeing Dogs do not replace counselling or pastoral care. They complement our existing wellbeing services by helping create calm, emotionally safe spaces where students can feel supported and ready to learn.
Service
Service is a core value of a Luther College education. Service is faith active in love and involves the selfless giving and loving of others, making a difference in their lives.
There are numerous leadership opportunities for students across the College. They include College Captains and Middle Years Captains, House Captains, plus leadership roles in the areas of sport and performing arts. In addition, students have opportunities to support and mentor younger students as peer support leaders and through everyday activities and Home Group.
Service learning opportunities are also available through our partnership with the Australian Lutheran World Service, the overseas aid and development agency of the Lutheran Church of Australia and New Zealand.
Community
Luther College offers a warm, caring and vibrant community, that over sixty years, has played an integral role in our success. Luther Connect, our parent-led community group hosts regular events including Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Breakfasts, giving families the opportunity to come together.
Our alumni are regularly welcomed back to the College as guest speakers or to support the running of sporting events, musicals and camps. Luther College has an active reunion program which celebrates 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 plus year milestones.
Co-Curricular Programs
Luther College offers an extensive range of co-curricular opportunities.
Performing Arts
The Performing Arts is a significant feature of school life at Luther College. Individual instrumental and singing tuition is available, and students participate in our many bands, ensembles or choirs. Performance opportunities include multiple concerts, school assemblies, celebration services, events and musicals.
Students can participate in the House Performing Arts Festival, House Drama Festival or College Musical where they have the opportunity to perform, design, direct, choreograph and work backstage.
Luther in Concert at Hamer Hall
Each year our annual music showcase Luther in Concert is held at Melbourne’s premier performance venue, Hamer Hall. Students and staff delight in performing on the same stage graced by some of the world’s most acclaimed acts.
Sport
Luther College is a member of Eastern Independent Schools Melbourne (EISM), where we compete at interschool carnivals for swimming, athletics and cross country. In addition, weekly interschool sports form part of the curriculum, from Year 7. Team sports played in competition may include volleyball, netball, basketball, touch rugby, tennis, football and cricket.
Sport occurs during scheduled school hours, enabling families to continue their association with local club competitions after school and on weekends.
Students also participate in House competitions for swimming, athletics and cross country.
