OUR HERITAGE OUR HERITAGE FROM FROM HUMBLE HUMBLE BEGINNINGS BEGINNINGS Preserving the Stories of Yesterday for the Descendants of Tomorrow Opening Chapter… Our Daddy Moody's mother was Nancy “Mama Nan” Cooper Jackson. Through historical records and family traditions, we have been able to trace our family history back to approximately 1847, the year Mama Nan was born. According to her death certificate, Nancy “Mama Nan” Cooper was born in Louisiana in November 1847. Her mother was Elizabeth Cooper, and the only information recorded regarding her father was the first name “Carper.” The exact location of her birth remains unknown. Mama Nan passed away on August 24, 1936, in Lott, Falls County, Texas, where she was laid to eternal rest. Although the following research is inconclusive, it is worth noting as part of this historical journey, particularly given the likelihood that Nancy “Mama Nan” Cooper was born into slavery. Family history, as shared by Carl B. Johnson with Kathy Bailey Green, states that Mama Nan was traveling from Louisiana toward California when the spoke of a wagon wheel broke in Lott, Texas. The family subsequently settled there. Carl B. did not identify who accompanied Mama Nan on this journey, and that portion of the story remains unknown. Nancy “Mama Nan” Cooper's first known union was with Charley Johnson (birth and death dates unknown). Born to this union were three children: Missouri Johnson (1872), Kaiser “Kizer” Johnson (1874), and Byrd Johnson (1879). Kizer Johnson was the father of Carl B. Johnson and the greatgrandfather of Dr. Cheryl “Cookie” Johnson and Carl B. Johnson, Jr. Through his descendants, the Johnson family legacy has continued across multiple generations. Charley Johnson is identified as the father on the birth records of Missouri, Kizer, and Byrd Johnson, and Missouri's death certificate also names him as her father. However, despite extensive research, no marriage record, birth record, death record, or other definitive documentation has yet been located for him. During the course of research, a historical reward notice was located offering $600 for the capture and return of a runaway slave named Charley Johnson from Madison Parish, Louisiana. While this discovery is compelling, no evidence has been found to prove that the individual named in the reward notice is the same Charley Johnson who fathered Missouri, Kizer, and Byrd Johnson. As such, Charley Johnson remains one of the enduring mysteries of the Johnson family history. His life, origins, and ultimate fate continue to be the subject of ongoing family research. Nancy later married Pete Jackson, a farm laborer. Together they raised their family in Falls County, Texas, including Missouri, Kaiser and Byrd Johnson. Census records show that Pete was born in Alabama to parents who were also born in Alabama. To this union were born Sam Jackson (1883), Albert Jackson (1886), Deer Jackson (1888), Peevie Jackson (1891), and Moody Jackson (1895).

Our Mama Lou was born on December 28, 1900, to Jeff Cotton and Emma O'Neal Cotton. Emma O'Neal was born February 2, 1882, and passed away on May 24, 1966, at the age of 84. Her death certificate lists her occupation as “Domestic Science Housework”. Emma's father was Saul O'Neal, and her mother was Fannie. Mama Lou shared stories of growing up in the countryside outside Lott, Texas, where her father, Jeff Cotton, built a home for his family. She also recalled that Jeff and Emma operated a café in Lott. Mama Lou remembered being fourteen years old when her father passed away. Following Jeff's death, Emma later married Sonny Dooley. The 1910 United States Census provides a glimpse into the Cotton family. Emma, age 27, reported that both of her parents were born in Texas. She could read and write and stated that she had been married for twelve years. At the time of the census, she had given birth to seven children, six of whom were still living. Jeff Cotton, aged 30, was listed as the head of household. He reported that both of his parents were born in Texas and that he worked as a laborer performing odd jobs. Living in the household were their children: Bertha Cotton (12), Lou Cotton (11), Lee Cotton (8), Ollie Lee Cotton (6), Grace Cotton (3), and Earle Cotton (1).
*Moody &*Lou Jackson Daddy Moody Jackson met and married Mama Lou Cotton in 1919. Three days after getting married, Moody joined the Army. To their union the following children were born: Moody Jr. (MJ), Andrew (AY), Roger, Peter, Janie, Billie and Margaret.

THE DESCENDANTS THE DESCENDANTS OF OF MOODY MOODY & & LOU LOU JACKSON JACKSON *Moody Jr. & *Rosie Mae Jackson Moody (M.J.) Jackson, Jr.: M.J. was raised by his grandmother Mama Nan. He was an adventurer, traveling around the country on freight trains. He married Rosie Mae and even after he married, he continued traveling by freight train. M.J. eventually took his family and moved to Phoenix. To this union the following children were born: Carol Jean, Edna, and Eugene were born in Lott while Joe, Moody III, Pat, Glenn, and Steve were born in Phoenix.

He married Mae Belle and worked for Pure Milk Company for years in Waco. Later he moved his family to Dallas, Texas. *Roger & *Freda Jackson Roger Jackson: Roger was sent to Hillsboro to finish high school. He lived with Aunt Gracie, Mama Lou’s sister. He joined the Army and went overseas to fight in World War II. Roger was a ladies’ man and was very handsome. He later married Dorothy McGowan in Waco, Texas. They adopted one child, Rodney Jackson. Roger later married Freda and they had one child, Roger Keith. Roger was also the father of Evans Brown.

*Peter &*Lorine Jackson Peter Jackson: Peter was the youngest boy and was raised with his younger sisters. He loved to play, shoot marbles, play ball and a game called slang shooter. He joined the Air Force and was stationed in New Orleans with his brother Roger. He married Lorine Childress and they had seven children: Peter Jr., Carl Edward, Roger James, LaVerne Marie, Patsy Ann, Enetta Faye, and Randy Lee.

She attended junior high and high school at Moore High School in Waco where she graduated. She was a member of the drill team and basketball team. After graduating, she attended Paul Quinn College where she met Leroy Bailey. She married Leroy in 1952 and seven girls were born: Diana, Kathy Louise, Carolyn Junette, Charlotte Sue, Janice Alene, Annetta Pearl & Vikki Michela.

*Billie June & *Wilbur David Covington Billie June Jackson: Billie was the middle girl. She was a tomboy, beautiful and had a great figure. She attended school in Waco and graduated from Moore High School. She was a member of the Moore High School drill team. After graduating high school, she attended nursing school at Providence Hospital in Waco. After completing nursing school she became a private nurse for a wealthy family in Waco. She met and married Wilbur David Covington in 1952. Billy David was born to this union in 1953. Billie died in childbirth. Billy David was raised by Mama Lou and thought of as the 8th child. He later relocated to Arlington, Texas where he met and married Wyvette Higgins in 1980. To this union the following children were born: Kasey Nictoria, Kerrick David, and Kevin DeWayne. Kasey died in 1982 from premature birth complications.

*Margaret & *Seaman Gray, Jr. Margaret Ann Jackson: Margaret was the baby girl and the last to be born to Lou & Moody. She attended East Waco Elementary School and middle and high school at Moore High School and was football sweetheart queen. She met and married Seaman Gray, Jr. around 1956 and they had three children: Stevie, Kendall, and Yvette. Gray was in the Air Force, and they traveled to California, Japan and later lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Gray died in Colorado Springs while playing basketball. After his death Margaret moved to Fort Worth where she built a home around the corner from Janie. She graduated from Paul Quinn College receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1968. She received her Teacher’s Certification from Stephen F. Austin University and received her master’s degree from Texas Woman’s University. She taught in elementary schools for 26 years in Fort Worth ISD.
