JEN GREENY

HEAD COACH

Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker announced Jen Greeny as the fifth volleyball head coach in the program's history in December of 2023.

Greeny came to WVU from Washington State, where she spent 13 seasons at the helm of the Cougar volleyball program and led WSU to three consecutive seasons with 20 wins or more. She brings a 347-199 (.636) career record to West Virginia, while she compiled a 235-175 (.573) overall mark during her time in Pullman.

A native of Davenport, Washington, Greeny brought Cougar volleyball back into the national spotlight with eight consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2016-23 and 12 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America selections. The Cougars finished in the AVCA Top 25 six times during her time at WSU, including the past four seasons.

Having been a part of the two best postseason runs in program history as both a player (1996 NCAA regional appearance) and an assistant coach (2002 NCAA regional appearance), Greeny inherited a Washington State team that went 0-18 in conference play in 2010, the year before her return to Pullman. She and her staff transformed the program into a perennial force in the Pac-12, reaching the NCAA Round of 16 as a head coach for the first time in 2018.

The Cougars matched the volleyball program record for most conference wins (14) in a single

season in 2022 and 2023 and finished third the final Pac-12 standings in each season, marking the best conference finish during Greeny’s 13-year tenure and the best since the 2002 WSU team that reached the NCAA regional championship.

In 2023, Greeny and Washington State finished with a 26-8 overall record, reaching 20 wins for the third consecutive season to mark the first such stretch since 1995-97. The Cougars’ 26 wins in 2023 also marked the highest win total for any team under Greeny and the highest single-season win total since 1997. Additionally, WSU knocked off the eventual NCAA National Champions and thenNo. 6 Texas, 3-1, at the start of the 2023 campaign.

WSU was selected as a No. 4 seed in the 2023 NCAA Volleyball Tournament, earning its eighth consecutive postseason bid, the longest stretch in program history. Washington State was selected as a host site for the 2023 tournament, marking the first time since 2018 that the tournament had been hosted in Pullman. WSU advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 for the second time in Greeny’s tenure.

A two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year (2016 & 2021), Greeny has coached 12 of the Cougars’ 16 AVCA All-Americans while her teams have produced 39 total postseason all-conference honors, including 17 first team All-Pac-12 selections. A former CoSIDA Academic All-American during her time as a Wazzu student-athlete, Greeny’s teams also have produced 45 Pac-12 All-Academic nods and a pair of Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year award recipients.

Greeny began her collegiate coaching career with a five-year stint at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho. Prior to turning around the LCSC program, which she led to a 112-24 (.824) record during her tenure, Greeny spent four years on WSU coach Cindy Fredrick’s coaching staff. Her time as an assistant coach at WSU was highlighted by the Cougars’ second-ever appearance in the regional championship of the NCAA Tournament in 2002. As a volleyball student-athlete at WSU, she became the seventh player in Washington State history to reach 1,000 career kills and was a three time All-Pac-10 Conference selection. Greeny (Stinson) still ranks eighth in career block assists (360), fourth in total blocks (419) and eighth in solo blocks (59). Greeny received invites to train with the U.S. National Team during her playing days and has since held roles as a talent evaluator and assistant coach with USA Volleyball. She was an assistant coach on the 2016 USA Volleyball Collegiate National Team and was later invited to join the USA volleyball staff for the 2022 Women’s National Team Open Program. Greeny earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Washington State in 1999. She and her husband Burdette, an associate head coach on Greeny’s staff, have two daughters, Lauren and Leah.

BURDETTE GREENY

ASSOCiAtE HEAD COACH

With 16 years of coaching experience under his belt, Burdette Greeny was named the associate head volleyball coach at West Virginia in January of 2024.

Greeny recently completed his 13th season with at Washington State in 2023 and was instrumental in WSU's eight consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. He joined the Cougar volleyball program in March 2011 as an assistant coach and was promoted to associate head coach in February 2017. Washington State finished the season in the AVCA Top 25 in four of the last five years including each of the past three seasons.

With a coaching style that emphasizes serving, passing and defense, the Cougars have finished in the top 50 in the NCAA in blocks per set each of the past nine seasons including the third-best mark in Division I volleyball back in 2016 (3.23 b/s).

Washington State finished the 2022 season with the 16th-best team hitting percentage (.280) in the nation, the second-best all-time mark in Cougar volleyball history.

Greeny consistently brought in top-level recruiting talent with some of the Cougars’ most highly touted classes raising the level of play in recent years. Pia Timmer and Magda Jehlarova each joined the WSU volleyball roster prior to the start of the 2019 season and grew into perennial all-conference performers. The pair were instrumental to WSU’s seventh-straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022 after a 14-6 Pac-12 season, the most conference wins in program history. WSU was one of only 15 programs in the nation to have two top 25 and one honorable mention recruiting class between 2013 and 2015. The 2013 and 2015 recruiting classes are two of the highest-ranked recruiting classes ever in any sport at WSU. Among Greeny’s WSU recruits are six PrepVolleyball.com Top 100 players and two Gatorade State Players of the Year.

A leader in DI volleyball recruiting, Greeny and the WSU coaching staff also were successful in using the NCAA transfer portal to build their roster of talented student-athletes who also fit the culture of Cougar volleyball. WSU volleyball added multiple starters in recent off-seasons, including Iman Isanovic, an honorable mention all-Pac-12 selection, prior to the start of the 2023 season. Greeny also helped recruit Laura Jansen, an All-Sun

Belt selection before committing to WSU, who went on to earn Pac-12 all-conference honors after one season on the Palouse. The Cougars also added starting libero, Karly Basham, to their roster as a transfer prior to the start of the 2021 season. The first high school recruit signed by Greeny was libero Kate Sommer who broke WSU’s career digs record with 1,954 digs. Among the 2013 recruiting class, which was the first real recruiting class for the Greenys, ranked 14th-best nationally, was Kyra Holt who became an honorable mention AVCA All-American, All-Pacific North Region and twotime All-Pac-12 selection. Holt also found success later as a professional player and is one of six players that Greeny has coached who have gone on to play professionally.

Middle blockers Taylor Mims and Claire Martin were signees in the 21st-best national recruiting class in 2015. As sophomores in 2016, Mims and Martin each finished in the top 25 nationally in blocks per set and total blocks. Greeny was integral to the recruitment and development of these front row players who became one of the elite blocking units in the nation. In 2016, WSU was number two in team total blocks behind national champion Stanford and third-best nationally in team blocks per set, a significant factor to WSU finishing fourth among all Power 5 conference schools and 26th overall in opponent hitting percentage. In 2017,

the Cougars were sixth-best nationally in team total blocks and 11th in team blocks per set.

Burdette Greeny assisted his wife Jen at Lewis-Clark State College from 2007-10 as an assistant coach. He was one of 20 assistant coaches nominated for the 2009 NAIA National Assistant Coach of the Year Award. He was promoted to associate head coach at LCSC in 2010. Greeny’s recruiting resume at LCSC included three junior college first team All-Americans, one second team All-American, one Gatorade State Player of the Year, two state players of the year and 12 first team all-state selections. In four years, 37 total LCSC players were named to the conference all-academic teams and seven players were recognized as NAIA Volleyball National Scholar-Athletes.

Out of high school, Greeny was drafted by the New York Mets, but instead played basketball and baseball at Tacoma Community College (1993-95). He earned second-team All-West Region honors both years as a third baseman and set a school record with 17 strikeouts in one game. He pitched for WSU in 1997, winning the team’s award for strength and conditioning. He later signed as a free agent with the Milwaukee Brewers before the 1998 draft and was with the organization for two seasons. Greeny earned a degree in humanities with an emphasis in English from WSU in 1999. From 2000 through 2007, he was the head coach in the Pullman American Legion Baseball organization where his teams won two regular-season titles, one district title and made the first appearance by a Pullman team at the state tournament since 1968. He tallied the first state tourney win in the program’s 60-year history and saw 88% of his American Legion players continue their careers at the collegiate level. Greeny spearheaded the development of the Palouse Summer Series which brings to Pullman some of the best amateur select and American Legion teams in the state and Canada. He was the recipient of the 2005 Pullman Chamber of Commerce STAR (Supporting Tourism and Recreation) Award.

Burdette and Jen Greeny were honored in 2015 with a City of Pullman Chamber of Commerce Walk of Fame plaque. They have two daughters, Lauren and Leah.

SEASON OUTLOOK

As the West Virginia University women’s volleyball team heads into the 2025 season, it's time to hear what head coach Jen Greeny expects to see from his team this season.

Entering her second season with the Mountaineers, Greeny looks to all her players to step up and make an impact. Following the 2024 season, Greeny went searching in the portal to find the missing pieces to this squad and she is confident with her choices. Her hopes are for the transfers, returners and newcomers to be able to build that chemistry and compete at their highest level.

The Mountaineers are certain to give it their all on the volleyball court this fall. With the first competition in sight, Greeny sat down to share her thoughts on the Mountaineers’ upcoming season.

What are your expectations for the 2025 season?

I want to continue to build on what we started from last year. We have quite a few newcomers to the team, and we are trying to integrate the squad as a whole. We are continuing to train our fundamentals, and just still focus on the process. With that, hopefully the results will come as well.

How do you bring motivation to the squad following the 2024 season?

We're very process-driven so we are trying to find success within every day of training. Even if a win might not show up on the scoreboard, taking teams to five sets, making the scores tighter, hitting a better percentage, all those things. If we can celebrate those little wins, it will lead to more success on the scoreboard.

You have a lot of new faces joining the team. How has it been getting them adjusted?

I think it's been great, especially for the girls that came in the spring. It's always a great time to train and get used to the culture and things like that. For the girls that have been here in the summer, again, I think we have a great foundation, and we have great leadership throughout our team. They're adjusting to that very well, and we'll be ready to hit the ground running once we start fall practice.

Are there any newcomers that could make an impact?

I think all our newcomers are going to help get this program in the right direction. But someone that really stands out is LonDynn Betts, in the libero position. She has had a great four years at Purdue Fort Wayne and done a fabulous job. She's a great communicator and reads the game very well. She is a fierce competitor, that doesn't like to lose. I think that will help us as well.

Who are your key returners from the 2024 season?

Cassidy Tanton was having a good year, and unfortunately, she got injured, and so I know she is ready to come back strong and continue to improve on some of the success that she had. Also, Layla Ibrahim. We moved her position around a little bit because we had some other injuries, but I think she has gained a lot of confidence, is continuing to get better and better.

Who are you expecting to take the biggest jump this year both in terms of talent level and their role on the team?

I think somebody like Maddy McGath. She has played a good deal on the court, but also now going into her junior year she understands the expectations and the leadership role in that. And so, you know, I could see her really having a breakout this year.

WVU PRESIDENT MICHAEL T. BENSON

Michael T. Benson, a veteran higher education administrator, became the 27th president of West Virginia University on July 15, 2025. He brings three decades of academic and administrative experience in higher education to his role leading West Virginia’s flagship, land-grant, R1 institution into a new era.

WVU is Benson’s fifth presidency. Prior to his arrival at Coastal Carolina in 2021, Benson led Snow College, Southern Utah University, and Eastern Kentucky University. During his tenure at Coastal Carolina, Benson secured a $10 million gift, the largest in the school’s history. He worked closely with community partners and policymakers to advance initiatives there, including the successful renewal of a local option penny sales tax to support public and higher education through the year 2039, the only tax of its kind in all of South Carolina.

In 2024, under his leadership, Coastal Carolina enrolled its largest number of students ever - 11,225 - while also setting a record retention rate.

As the 14th president of Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, he helped raise more private money for the institution during his tenure than had been secured in the previous 115 years of the college’s history combined.

Appointed at age 36, Benson was the youngest college president in the history of the Utah System of Higher Education.

Benson has also held faculty appointments at the University of Utah, the University of Notre Dame, and Johns Hopkins University, and has taught at each institution where he served as president, including Coastal Carolina where he was a professor of history.

His scholarly work has focused on the development of the research university and its impact on society. Benson’s book, “Daniel Coit Gilman and the Birth of the American Research University,” was released by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2022. He was a visiting professor in the Department of the History of Science and Technology at Johns Hopkins in 2020. Benson’s biography of Gilman was named to the list of Best Higher

Education Books of 2023 by Forbes magazine.

Benson is also the author of “Harry S. Truman and the Founding of Israel,” and, with co-author Hal Boyd, published “College for the Commonwealth: A Case for Higher Education in American Democracy” with the University Press of Kentucky. Nationally, Benson serves on the Council of Presidents of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. He also is the past board chair of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society and is the former chair of the NCAA Honors Committee.

Benson is sought after for public speeches and appearances. He was a featured contributor to the Huffington Post for 5 years; has written articles for The Jerusalem Post, Lexington Herald-Leader, Louisville Courier Journal, The Kansas City Star, Deseret News, and The Salt Lake Tribune, among others; and appeared on ESPN’s The Paul Finebaum Show. Born in Utah and raised in Texas and Indiana, Benson has worked and studied abroad for nearly 7 years in Italy, England, and Israel. He graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science and double minors in English and history from Brigham Young University in 1990. He completed his doctorate in modern history from the University of Oxford (St. Antony’s College) in 1995, where he was a Rotary Foundation Scholar and recipient of the Oxford Graduate Overseas Fellowship.

Founder’s Award. Benson graduated with a Master of Liberal Arts from Johns Hopkins University in August 2021 and was elected to the Honor Society of the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs.

An accomplished athlete, President Benson played basketball at BYU and Oxford, and his best marathon time – 2 hours and 41 minutes – won his age division in the St. George (Utah) Marathon. He also finished among the top 25% of all runners in the 1984 Boston Marathon, one of only 19 teenagers from around the world to compete in the race.

An avid traveler, he has visited all 50 states and five of the seven continents.

He also earned a master’s degree cum laude in nonprofit administration in 2011 from the University of Notre Dame Mendoza College of Business, where he was the recipient of the prestigious Father Theodore Hesburgh

He and his wife, Debi, are the parents of three children – Truman, Tatum, and Talmage. He also has two older children from a previous marriage. Emma is a TV reporter for KSL in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Samuel writes for Politico in Washington, D.C. Sam’s wife, Keylla, is in her first year at Georgetown Law School.

WVU VICE PRESIDENT/DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS WREN BAKER

Wren Baker has changed the face of West Virginia University Athletics. He has reenergized the department and set it up for long-term success in the ever-changing world of college athletics. Whether it’s coaching searches, facility master plans, revenue sharing or a modern, business-like approach to Name, Image and Likeness, Baker has faced every challenge head on and has never looked back. He has brought new thinking and confidence to WVU Athletics, and his reputation across the country is secondto-none.

Baker is a high-energy leader, and Mountaineer success has been contagious in competition and in the classroom. Conference championships, NCAA appearances and a national championship have been followed by strong academic achievement for Mountaineer student-athletes, eclipsing previous department GPA highs. Under Baker, WVU has also turned in record fundraising numbers as his forward thinking and strategic planning are geared to bringing future success and revenue stability to the state’s Land-Grant Institution.

Missouri, Memphis, Northwest Missouri and Rogers State, he brought more than 20 years of experience to WVU.

Baker was an instant hit with WVU fans. In his first year in Morgantown, he traveled the state to learn its culture, geography, and history. He has met and listened to Mountaineer fans from all over the world and immersed himself on what it means to be a proud West Virginian. The results of his approach and work ethic speak volumes as the West Virginia Mountaineers continue to be a national brand. Despite accomplishing so much in a short period of time, Baker’s plate is still full. Continued revenue generation, launching an NIL full-service business agency for student-athlete advancement and premium seating options in his two major sports venues are still on his radar for the coming year. His endless energy never stops moving WVU forward.

Then WVU President E. Gordon Gee named Baker as WVU’s vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics on Nov. 30, 2022. He has oversight of 18 varsity sports, a department budget of more than $90 million, approximately 250 employees and nearly 500 studentathletes.

Baker is WVU’s 13th director of athletics and came to Morgantown from the University of North Texas, where he had been the associate vice president and athletics director since 2016. With previous stops at

At North Texas, seven Mean Green programs combined to win 17 conference or division championships during Baker’s tenure. UNT also reached new heights in the classroom under Baker’s leadership, posting its top APR scores and four consecutive department Graduation Success Rate (GSR) records. Baker led record fundraising years at North Texas, and the overall top five largest gifts ever at UNT came under Baker’s leadership.

Prior to North Texas, Baker was the deputy director of athletics at Missouri from 2015 to 2016, serving as the top advisor and chief of staff.

Before Missouri, he spent time at Memphis from 2013-15 as deputy athletics director.

From 2011-13, Baker was athletics director at NCAA Division II power Northwest Missouri State. From 2006-11, Baker served as the first athletics director at Rogers State in Claremore, Oklahoma, where he was also the school’s first men’s basketball coach. His team went 2011 in his only season at the helm, and during his tenure, he developed a full-scale, competitive collegiate athletics program. In 2005, he was the principal and athletics director for Valliant Public Schools, and at age 26, was the youngest principal in Oklahoma history.

Originally from Valliant, Oklahoma, Baker earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Southeastern Oklahoma State in 2001 where he was a member of the honors program. He went on to earn his master’s degree in education leadership from Oklahoma State in 2003.

While at Oklahoma State, Baker was a graduate assistant and basketball operations assistant for the Cowboys’ men’s basketball program under legendary head coach Eddie Sutton. During his time with OSU, the Cowboys posted a 102-30 record, reaching four NCAA tournaments with trips to the 2004 Final Four and the 2005 Sweet 16.

Baker and his wife, Heather, a Bokchito, Oklahoma, native, have two daughters, Addisyn and Reagan.
