A MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
SHANE LYONS My first six months on the job as your athletic director have been busy and informative. I have gotten to know a lot of folks and visited many parts of our great state. Let me say that I am truly humbled to return to my alma mater as its 12th Director of Athletics. When I started on February 2, there wasn’t any time to ease into the job as our winter sports were already in full action. I was able to be on hand for some great highlights this year by our department, and overall the 2014-15 season brought many accomplishments. You will see all the great achievements in the following pages of this Annual Report, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a few. Before I returned to Morgantown, women’s soccer won its second straight Big 12 tournament championship and third straight regular-season title, while football upset No. 4 Baylor. Who knew at the time that our win over Baylor would be a deciding factor in forming the first College Football Playoff? Also in the fall, cross country finished No. 8 in the nation and that spring boarded us into the start of my tenure in February. In my first few months, I was thrilled to see rifle win its 17th national championship, and wrestling’s Zeke Moisey finish as the national runner-up. Men’s basketball defeated No. 8 Kansas as we all enjoyed the team’s run to the NCAA Sweet 16, while Mike Carey’s women’s basketball team came so close to winning a WNIT title. We all will remember April for the opening of the $25 million Monongalia County Ballpark. The beautiful facility will serve as the home of Mountaineer baseball for many years and is a source of pride for our University and community. You will read in this Annual Report that we had 40 All-Americans, 85 all-conference performers, 11 national

award honorees, eight conference award winners, five major coaching awards and 15 student-athletes with international team honors. On top of athletic achievements, our student-athletes also excelled in the classroom. The year brought us 11 Academic All-Americans, 124 Academic All-Conference selections and 13 academic award winners. The combined grade point average for our 18 athletic teams was an impressive 3.02 in the spring semester, with cross country taking the top mark with a 3.6 GPA. We had 488 student-athletes represented on this year’s Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and 43 of them registered a 4.0. Our Academic Progress Rate (APR) was once again very good, and seven teams (gymnastics, rowing, women’s basketball, cross country, rifle, tennis and women’s swimming) finished the year with a perfect 1,000 APR. Overall, more than 500 student-athletes were honored on our Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. We had a lot to be proud of during the 2014-15 season and in my first six months on the job. But this is only the beginning. My vision for the future holds better facilities for our student-athletes and fans. I want our teams competing for conference and national championships, and we will continue to make you proud of us on and off the field. With that being said, I want to thank you for your generous support. It’s been almost 27 years since I lived in West Virginia, but one thing has not changed. The people who live here are what make this place so special. My family has now moved to Morgantown from Alabama, and we are getting settled into the University community. I look forward to being your athletic director for many years to come, and we will continue to uphold the values and mission of this great state’s land-grant institution.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 23-15/7-12 Big 12 • Reached the Postseason WNIT Championship game, but fell 62-60 to UCLA in front of a Mountaineer crowd of 8,658 at the Charleston Civic Center • Reeled off five consecutive victories and played in a school-record 38 games for the team’s second Postseason WNIT Championship game appearance. • Reached the Postseason WNIT Championship for the second time (The Mountaineers fell to Missouri State in the 2005 title game) • Set a school records in rebounds (1,621) and blocks (242) in its deepest postseason run since 2005 • Under Mike Carey’s tutelage, the Mountaineers have reached postseason play in 11 of his 14 seasons and nine consecutive years. Carey’s squads have boasted 20 or more wins nine times • Carey has compiled a record of 297-161 during his 14-year tenure at WVU. The Mountaineer Athletic Club (MAC) is the fundraising arm for the West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. The WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics pays 100% of the scholarships awarded to over 475 student-athletes in 18 varsity sports from generous contributions made by 6,500+ MAC Members. Those individual and corporate contributions help Advance Scholarship and Build Champions. The cost of competing at the highest level and providing a first-class education for outstanding student-athletes continues to climb. The MAC must grow its membership and level of support in order to keep WVU as one of the nation’s premier athletic programs. Athletics is a window through which the University is often viewed, with its accomplishments serving as a tremendous recruiting tool and a catalyst for philanthropy to all areas of WVU. Essential private support enables the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to recruit and train elite student-athletes in first-class facilities, fund scholarships and compete on a level playing field with peer institutions. Financial stability in athletics ultimately breeds success, and success breeds pride among WVU’s many alumni and friends.

FACILITIES UPGRADES The West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics strives to provide its student-athletes, coaches and fans first-class facilities, and the 2014-15 year saw capital projects that included a new team room for Mountaineer football, a renovated locker room for Mountaineer women’s basketball, an indoor training facility for Mountaineer golf and a new baseball park for Mountaineer baseball. The team room, golf training facility and women’s basketball locker room projects were accomplished with the support of major gifts to the Mountaineer Athletic Club, while the Monongalia County Ballpark is being funded through a sales tax Tax Increment Financing district approved by the West Virginia Legislature.
