March 2026
SUN MARCH 22 8 PM
This month on WFMT, we celebrate Women’s History Month with special programming, including Collectors' Corner with Henry Fogel on great female pianists, Elim Chan conducting the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, and women-centered episodes of Folkstage, The Midnight Special, and Live from WFMT
Dear Member,
This month, WTTW brings you The Forsytes, a highly anticipated new series based on the novels by John Galsworthy. This “prequel” to the familiar story chronicles the trials and triumphs of a wealthy Victorian stockbroking family who find themselves torn between tradition and the personal pursuit of happiness. On page 4, hear from members of the cast as they hint at what you can expect to see throughout the miniseries.

Along with The Forsytes , we will premiere another season of Call the Midwife and a gripping new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s dramatic saga The Count of Monte Cristo . And throughout March, WTTW will celebrate Women’s History Month with new profiles of tennis icons Venus and Serena Williams, prolific writer Eudora Welty, and ballet trailblazer Martha Graham and the legendary dance company she founded as it celebrates its centenary. See page 7 for a rundown of these programs and many others that shine a light on stories of strong and resilient women throughout history.
Also in March, WFMT will also mark Women’s History Month with a variety of music performed, conducted, and written by women. Some highlights include a two-part Collectors' Corner with Henry Fogel that recalls great female pianists of the past; Elim Chin conducting the Danish National Symphony Orchestra; Folkstage and Midnight Special programs that feature generational artists; a Listening to Singers episode that focuses on 19th century mezzosoprano Pauline Viardot; and The William Ferris Chorale performing works by women on a new Live from WFMT. And for Metropolitan Opera fans, this month soprano Lise Davidsen returns from hiatus to headline Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde ; also hear Puccini’s Madama Butterfly starring Sonya Yoncheva in her Met role debut.
As spring approaches, we’re grateful you are watching WTTW and listening to WFMT, and hope you are enjoying everything we have to offer. My heartfelt thanks for your support.
Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

generation-spanning saga is coming your way. The Forsytes is the latest drama from Masterpiece, following the fortunes of one British family as they navigate a changing England in the nineteenth century. Written as a “prequel” to the Nobel Prize-winning novelist John Galsworthy’s The Forsyte Saga books, the series dives into the story of a family who has newly acquired its money and is riven by conflict between two brothers and their heirs.
Hear from four of the actors in this historical epic: Eleanor Tomlinson, who plays Louisa, a woman who could wreck the Forsytes with her secret; Tuppence Middleton, whose character Frances married into the Forsyte family; Stephen Moyer, whose Jolyon is the father of Frances’s husband, Jolyon, Jr.; and Francesca Annis, the matriarch of the family and mother of Jolyon, Sr.
Would you describe The Forsytes as a romantic drama?
Eleanor Tomlinson: Romance and love are very much at the forefront of my character’s story arc and
for her, it’s about rediscovering the most significant love of her life. Romance and relationships are at the heart of the show for almost all of the characters in some form or other. Louisa has always been true to herself; she has had to tell white lies here and there to protect herself and her children. She’s incredibly loyal to the woman she has become and everything that she holds dear and has worked so hard for. The revelation of her previous relationship with Jolyon tests his loyalty and asks questions about Jolyon’s integrity and how honest he has been about his feelings.
What are the key themes of the series?
Tuppence Middleton: The Forsytes is full of secrets. It feels like there is always someone withholding something from someone else, which makes it very riveting to watch. You see the way in which people cover up, whether it’s to protect themselves or for their own gain. On top of that, there are many different shades of romance in this story. There’s a very pure first love, and there is passion which becomes controlling. There is a very stable, loyal love, which

is disrupted and causes ripple effects throughout the family and the business. We really get to see the full spectrum of what love means to all of these different people. At this time and within this society there was a real sense of moral obligation to other people, your position in society, your work and to your family. Those things are really tested throughout the course of the story. With Frances and Jolyon particularly, we explore a lot about loyalty, because Jolyon must make a decision about whether his loyalty is to his family, the company, or his bohemian spirit.
What can we expect from the show in terms of secrets?
Stephen Moyer: When we think of a Victorian drama, it’s all about the things that you don’t know, the stuff that’s hidden. I believe that all the characters within these dramas have these hidden elements of themselves that are restricted, and this is exemplified in the costuming. The bodice is a physical embodiment of it for women, but figuratively for the men as well. Also, I think that there are elements of the characters’ past that will come to the forefront within the story in a way that perhaps didn’t in the original books. There’s a lot of working out what the other person is doing and determining what they give away, which I think is an important aspect of our version of this tale and the way that we do the storytelling.
Describe how the theme of succession
plays a role in the business side of the story.
Moyer: One of the interesting elements about primogeniture is that, as an accident of birth, my character is born first and James is born second. Therefore, my son is going to be the one who takes over the company, whether he has the disposition or aptitude for the job or not. It’s just how it worked back then. In some respects, my character understands how that must be extraordinarily frustrating for James, but it doesn’t change the fact that that’s how it has to be. I think my character is probably more sympathetic to James’s bitterness than he is to my kindness. As much as there is a burden of being the second-born son and not being able to make the big decisions, the firstborn has the burden of not being able to do anything else. They’re two sides of the same coin, which is really interesting to
and the end of the episodes and is very much telling the story from the perspective of the present, rather than trying to pack in the past as well. It’s full of family drama like love, death, secrets, and marriages, all of which offer intrigue and great storytelling.
Why do you think American audiences in particular love British costume drama?
Annis: English period dramas have a great eye for authenticity and detail which I think really appeals to American audiences. The Forsytes are not aristocracy or even born into the wealth they now enjoy. They were a self-made family that has made good and are now struggling to hold on to everything they have. I think that’s something that Americans appreciate, understand, and are interested in. Additionally, it’s the notion of

play. My character would love to have had the chance to follow his dreams; equally James wasn’t able to be in charge so now he desperately wants his son Soames to be the one to step up because he feels that his son is much better equipped to do so than Jolyon.
How did you feel when you first read the script?
Francesca Annis: I loved the script immediately. Ann narrates the beginning
holding a family and a business together. Well, we’ve all been there, haven’t we?

Singer-songwriter James Keelaghan grew up in northwest Calgary with six siblings, an Irish father, and an English mother. The family record collection provided inspiration with Traditional folk LPs by the likes of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, Séan Ó Riada, and Harry Belafonte. Incidentally, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy would live in Calgary in the mid-‘70s where they recorded a weekly television series that James and his father routinely attended. Now a Juno and Canadian Folk Music Award winner, James Keelaghan’s career spans almost four decades with a unique body of work, either inspired by or drawn from the folk tradition, including ten solo albums and various originals that will surely enter the domain of traditional folklore. Keelaghan has been described by Eric Bibb, the celebrated acoustic bluesman, as “a joy to hear, just beautiful. Reminded me of the best of the best of another time: Liam Clancy, Tom Paxton, etcetera,” while Rolling Stone simply described him as “Canada’s finest songwriter.” James Keelaghan returns to Folkstage for a live performance from Acoustic Renaissance Concerts in Hinsdale. He is joined by David Woodhead, the prolific and versatile bassist best known for his melodic personal style.

Zell Music Director Designate Klaus Mäkelä returned to Chicago last October for the first of four CSO residencies this season following acclaimed orchestral performances around the world which included concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Mäkelä was also one of the featured conductors in the historic Mahler Festival in Amsterdam last May. His first program of the 2025-26 season centered two programmatic showpieces by Hector Berlioz: Harold in Italy, a concerto commissioned by Niccolò Paganini who wanted to show off his new Stradivarius viola — performed here by acclaimed French violist Antoine Tamestit; and the audience favorite, Symphonie fantastique, Berlioz’s thriller about a lovesick artist obsessed with a young actress. Chicago Classical Review hailed the concert as “a brilliant and blazing night of Berlioz,” describing Mäkelä’s partnership with the orchestra as “growing closer, musically tighter, and stronger and more effective overall with each successive performance.”

French conductor, recorder player, and bass Lionel Meunier is both the founder and artistic director of the renowned Belgian vocal ensemble Vox Luminis and a leading figure in historically informed performance practice and choral music. His interpretations combine meticulous musical detail with energetic expressiveness, a blend that has garnered him international acclaim. He is increasingly in demand as a guest conductor and artistic partner for choirs, ensembles, and orchestras worldwide. Under his direction, Vox Luminis has undertaken extensive concert tours throughout Europe, North America, and Asia, established multi-year residencies at Wigmore Hall, the Aldeburgh Festival, the Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, and the Concertgebouw Bruges, and released over 20 critically acclaimed albums. 7:00 Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin:

Metropolitan Opera
Wagner’s Isolde is one of the most demanding roles in the operatic repertoire, requiring immense vocal power, stamina, and dramatic authority. Lisa Davidsen’s assumption of the role (only the second production of the opera after debuting the role at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona in January 2026 following her maternity leave) confirms her status as a true Wagnerian soprano at a time when such voices are increasingly rare. Her bright, focused tone and seemingly effortless projection offer a modern answer to a role long associated with legendary figures like Kirsten Flagstad and Birgit Nilsson. For the Met, her Isolde signals confidence in a new generation of singers capable of sustaining these monumental works which also includes her American colleagues for this production: “baritenor” and heldentenor Michael Spyres as Tristan, and bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green as King Marke. Please note the early start time of Tristan und Isolde which will also be broadcast in HD cinemas.
