This month on WFMT, we’ll bring you this year’s winner of the Crain-Maling CSO Young Artist Competition – the talented violinist Cecilia O’Malley. Listen for her winning performance of Korngold’s Violin Concerto with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and conducted by Naomi Woo.
From the President & CEO
Dear Member,
The whistle of a locomotive. The rumble of steel on steel. In Chicago, trains aren’t just a mode of transportation – they’re part of the DNA of the city. In RIDING THE RAILS , lifelong train enthusiast Geoffrey Baer hops aboard to tell the story of how railroads shaped our city. Along the way, he uncovers clues all around us to railroads of the past, recalls the colorful characters who built them and the unsung workers who toiled on them, and reveals why our current rail system remains just as vital to Chicago’s existence today. And visit the companion website at wttw.com/rails on April 13 to discover the artistry of Union Station, visit Chicago’s bygone downtown train stations, and more.
Also in April, to mark Earth Day, WTTW highlights the natural environment with the two-part film Our New World , which examines how Earth might adapt to climate change; Nature programs that focus on orphaned elephants and magnificent Indian tigers; a NOVA special that follows scientists reacting to catastrophic weather events; and Shared Planet , a new series that highlights the profound benefits of coexisting with nature across multiple ecosystems.
On WFMT, we’ll bring you this year’s winner of the Crain-Maling CSO Young Artist Competition – the talented violinist Cecilia O’Malley. Join us to hear her winning performance of Korngold’s Violin Concerto with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, conducted by Naomi Woo. Also listen for three concerts by the San Francisco Symphony conducted by music director EsaPekka Salonen in his final season with the orchestra. And the Metropolitan Opera presents a star-studded production of Innocence, a gripping contemporary work by the late, great Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho.
We hope you are enjoying early spring in Chicago, and are grateful as always for your support.
Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Riding the Rails
In the new special Riding the Rails with Geoffrey Baer, premiering Monday, April 13 at 7:00 pm on WTTW, the PBS app, and wttw.com/rails, Geoffrey explores Chicago’s past and present trains and railroad lines and explains why the city was and is known as “America’s railroad capital.” Read as he shares his personal train obsession and the reasons why this was an important Chicago story to tell.
The Guide: You mention in the show that you’re a huge train fan from way back. When do you recall first being interested in trains, and what was it about them that most fascinated you?
Geoffrey Baer: The first house where I lived was within sight of the Chicago and Northwestern commuter trains (now the Union Pacific North Line). My mom tells me that every time a train went by, I would hurry to the window to watch. I can’t really say why I was so drawn to trains. But to this day, I’ll stop and watch when one goes by. There’s something irresistible to me about them.
The Guide: In this program, you set out on a journey to show us how Chicago’s railroads “shaped the city.” What do you mean?
Baer: In the mid-1800s, railroads saw Chicago, with its central location and key waterways, as the hub for their rapidly expanding networks. Most lines came in from the south to get around Lake Michigan without having to build bridges across the river. So what is now the
Geoffrey Baer
South Loop was basically one big railyard from the lakefront all the way to the river’s south branch. And the Illinois Central was allowed to come right up the lakefront and built a massive railyard at the mouth of the Chicago River, including where Millennium Park is today. The entire north bank of the river’s main branch (think today’s Merchandise Mart and Marina City) was another massive swath of rail lines. And wherever streetcar and ‘L’ lines were built, development followed, stretching out into neighborhoods and suburbs.
The Guide: You always introduce us to some colorful historical characters who left a mark on our city. Tell us about one that we meet in this show.
Baer: Charles Tyson Yerkes for sure. Yerkes was a classic robber baron of the Gilded Age. He had already served time in jail out east before coming to Chicago. Using deception, bribery, and blackmail, he gained control of streetcar networks and ‘L’ lines. His biggest coup was building the Chicago Loop to connect all the ‘L’ lines together. Among his underhanded tactics to secure permission to build the Loop was a promise to extend a line west of downtown along Van Buren Street. But once he completed the Loop, he left the rest of the line unbuilt. He wrote, “I am in Chicago to make money, and if it were not for what I expect to make out of it, I would take the first train to New York and never set eyes on the beastly place again.” Chicago didn’t think much of him either. After pocketing millions, he left Chicago and eventually helped build London’s famous Underground, a.k.a. “The Tube.”
The Guide: What is the oddest story you uncovered about Chicago’s railroad history?
Baer: The 19th-century menu in the dining cars of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railway! It featured loin of mutton, turtle soup, venison, ox tongue, young goose, oysters, and sweetbreads. I also think the story of the largest train robbery in American history is pretty wild. It happened in Rondout, Illinois, between Lake Bluff and Libertyville. The notorious
Newton Brothers from Texas commandeered a mail train which in those days carried millions of dollars in jewels, bonds, and cash, overseen by postal workers who were carrying guns! The whole heist was a comedy of errors, ending in the robbers shooting and wounding one of their own before fleeing with their haul, some of which was never found. All the Newton boys served time in prison, after which they promptly returned to their life of crime. One of them, near the end of his life, was interviewed by Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show!
The Guide: And was there a “bucket list” item that you got to cross off while filming this special?
Baer: Driving a steam engine! The show ends with that scene at the Illinois Railway Museum and you can see the giddy look on my face. I was not acting!
The Guide: What do you hope viewers will take away from Riding the Rails?
Baer: Most people have heard that Chicago is America’s railroad capital. But I hope
The Guide: If you could go back in time, what is the train experience you would most like to have?
Baer: Traveling coast to coast in the heyday of the mid-20th century. The food in t he dining cars was excellent (and not as exotic as the 19th century food mentioned above). The sleeping cars were clean and cleverly designed to maximize space. And the views in the observation cars were spectacular for the scenic parts of the journey. That said, I think I would have been uncomfortable that there were still African Americans doing most if not all of the work as porters.
this show will give people a sense of what that has meant for the city historically as well as today. The railroads are a massive part of our economy and daily lives. We intersect with rail lines at grade crossings and bridges, but where those trains are going and what they are carrying is a mystery to most of us. In the show, I visited one of Chicago’s nine massive container railroad yards and asked the supervisor what was in all those containers. She said basically everything we use every day from paper towels to furniture. Your life is deeply connected to railroads, whether you know it or not!

Live from WFMT
The British-Korean pianist, composer, and musical humorist Hyung-ki Joo is known for blending virtuosic classical performance with theatrical comedy. Trained at the Manhattan School of Music, he built an international career not only as a serious concert pianist but also as an entertainer who delights audiences by bending the rules of classical tradition. Joo is widely recognized as one half of the musical comedy duo Igudesman and Joo, whose shows combined dazzling pianism with affectionate satire of the classical music world. After 20 years of performing together, the duo gave their final concerts last December. Hyung-ki Joo continues to introduce new audiences to classical music through concerts, playful viral videos and educational outreach. Despite the comedic framing, Joo’s musicianship remains central: his performances demonstrate refined technique, expressive phrasing, and deep knowledge of the repertoire. Hyung-ki Joo returns to the Levin Studio for a rare solo recital.

In the Spotlight
San Francisco Symphony
Having attempted one of the most intellectually ambitious artistic plans of any American orchestra, EsaPekka Salonen stepped down from his post as music director of the San Francisco Symphony last June. His five-year tenure was notable for high musical standards emphasizing precision and transparency of sound, adventurous programming that favored world premieres and works by living composers, and interdisciplinary projects that combined music, technology, and visual elements. Having begun in the role in 2020, Salonen effectively lost two of his five seasons to pandemic disruption. The first three programs of the radio broadcast season, his farewell season, are led by Salonen. Programs feature canonical favorites like Brahms’s Fourth Symphony, Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony, and Debussy’s La Mer, coupled with contemporary works such as Nico Muhly’s Piano Concerto with soloist Alexandre Tharoaud, and principal cello Rainer Eudeikis as soloist in Salonen’s own Cello Concerto.

Metropolitan Opera
The late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s final opera is a raw and unflinching depiction of the trauma left in the wake of a school shooting, Captivating with its eerie, darkly beautiful sound-world and diverse vocal styles, ranging from traditional opera to expressionistic speak-singing to Scandinavian folk music, Innocence has been hailed as “completely exhilarating” (The New York Times) and “a modern masterpiece” (The Telegraph). For its Met premiere, the cast is anchored by mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato (CSO Astist-in-Residence) and Finnish ethno-pop singer Vilma Jää as a grieving mother and the daughter she lost in the shooting, as well as soprano Jacquelyn Stucker (Fiordiligi in Lyric Opera’s Cosi fan tutte) and tenor Miles Mykkanen (title role in Chicago Opera Theater’s recent Albert Herring) as a young couple whose wedding, a decade after the tragedy, uncovers buried secrets and reopens old wounds. Maestro Susanna Mälkki, a close friend and collaborator of Saariaho’s, conducts what she calls “one of the most important works of our time.”

Listening to Singers
José van Dam (August 25, 1940February 17, 2026) was among the most distinguished bass-baritones of the late twentieth century, known for his humility, the elegance of his singing, and the psychological depth of his stage portrayals. His artistry combined a dark, noble timbre with exceptional dramatic nuance, earning him a reputation as a refined singing actor. A native of Belgium, he rose to international prominence in the late 1960s and soon became a regular guest at the world’s great stages, including the Royal Opera, Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Wiener Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, and the Salzburg Festival. His celebrated roles include Escamillo in Carmen, Golaud in Pelléas et Mélisande, and the title role in The Flying Dutchman. He was also a leading Mozartian, recitalist, and orchestral soloist performing extensively with leading orchestras and conductors. Ryan Opera Center bass-baritone Benjamin R. Sokol joins WFMT to survey van Dam’s recorded legacy in this special episode paying tribute to a legendary artist.
