Nutrition Dental Diseases, Dietary Carbohydrates, and Vitamin D Philippe Hujoel, DDS, MSD Thursday, June 12 from 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. CDE Credits: 3 Hours Room: Meydenbauer 402-403 Vitamin D & Dental Caries: In the early 20th century vitamin D became endorsed for dental caries prevention by the American Dental Association, the American Medical Association, and the National Academy of Sciences. This consensus regarding the value of vitamin D subsequently evaporated and vitamin D became marginalized in dentistry, almost the equivalent of snake oil. The history and science behind this remarkable turnaround will be reviewed. Carbohydrates and Dental Health: Introducing sugar-laden fruits, cereals, or potatoes into human diets generally leads to poor dental health. Fluorides and sealants are effective at reducing these dietary harms but they are no panacea. Dietary restriction of fermentable carbohydrates is one approach the dental practitioner could once again consider as a standard of care for patients suffering from dental diseases. Learning Objectives: • Describe the factors that ended vitamin D research in dental caries research • Understand why candy became described as heart-healthy snack by the National Cholesterol Program • Familiarize yourself with key adverse effects of carbohydrates on oral health Dr. Hujoel is a professor at the University of Washington School of Dentistry.

Feeling lucky? You may never really know how good your liability insurance company is until a claim is filed against you.
We understand the temptation to save money on things like insurance premiums. The problem is, when a malpractice claim is filed against you, you want the best service, the brightest minds, and the most capable attorneys on your side - answering your questions. Those other guys? They’re not as good as us, and they’re not local — and they simply may not be as easy to reach as we are. Go ahead, give it a try. Pick up the phone and call us today. We want to talk with you.
