If you could instantly master any hobby tomorrow, what would it be and why? If I could instantly master a hobby it would be playing a musical instrument. My oldest son, Biga, plays piano and my youngest son, Landon, plays saxophone. They are amazingly talented and music is the place that brings them so much peace and joy. I wish I had a hobby that would be transformative in that way.
What’s one myth about the CPA profession you wish people understood better? People often think the CPA profession is all numbers, but the real heart of our work is about building meaningful relationships. We are the stewards of financial health, but it’s the trust and connection we are building with our teams, clients and communities that make this work so rewarding.

What’s a small thing that always makes your day better?
Those first few moments of peace and quiet in the house every morning before the rest of the world wakes up. I like to wake up early and head to the gym every morning, but I always try to take a few minutes of peace and quiet while I sip coffee and think about the day ahead.
How do you stay curious and continue learning in your field? I like to stay open to new perspectives. It’s a mindset shift that recognizes no one can be an expert in everything, and even if someone achieves expertise in their field that doesn’t mean they know everything. I’d rather be a learn-it-all than a know-it-all.

In her down time, Liz enjoys spending time with her family and pandemic pup Junebug, planning vacations and summer camping trips, and coaxing out stubborn garden blooms in her shady Seattle yard.
In what fictional world would you most like to spend a weekend? As a millennial, I’m required to say Hogwarts.
What professional accomplishment are you most quietly proud of? Much of the work I do is in support of organizations behind the scenes, which I really enjoy. I recently helped develop and run the accounting operations for a new not-forprofit organization from the ground up. It was a great learning experience, and I had a lot of pride in supporting the team and their mission as they grew.

What’s a small thing that always makes your day better? Good coffee/scotch and conversation.
What food do you secretly judge people for not liking? Poke. It's the best.
What professional accomplishment are you most quietly proud of? The opportunity to be an adjunct instructor. Connecting with the students and providing guidance to those that were just starting their careers was such a rewarding experience.

Are you a “plan everything” person or more of a “see what happens” person? I like to plan the important things, and let the rest surprise me.
What does good leadership look like to you? Leadership starts with self-accountability. It means holding yourself to a high standard, leading by example, and never asking more of others than you’re willing to ask of yourself.
What’s one skill every future professional should start building now? Saying yes to the things that challenge you. Discomfort is often the clearest signal of where you need to grow, both professionally and personally.

COLLEEN MURPHY, CPA
Director
Term:3 years
Colleen Murphy, CPA, is Chief Accounting Officer and Treasurer at Symetra Financial Corporation, where she leads the finance organization through significant transformation, including its separation from Safeco, private equity ownership, IPO, and operations as both a NYSE-listed and private company. She began her career at Deloitte and is passionate about developing strong teams and future leaders. A WSCPA member for more than 20 years, Colleen is a board member on nonprofit boards close to her heart, including Girl Scouts of Western Washington, Sound Generations, and the Washington State University Foundation finance committee, and volunteers as a tax counselor with AARP’s VITA program. She enjoys hiking, biking, skiing, and time with her husband and two daughters—one also a CPA at Deloitte.
What’s a small thing that always makes your day better? They call me “Caffeinated Colleen,” so my answer won’t surprise anyone. That first cup of freshly brewed coffee in the morning—topped with a dollop of whipped cream—sipped by my fireplace sets the tone for my day. It’s a small thing but reminds me to slow down and reflect on the day before me.
What’s a piece of advice you once received that changed how you work? Early in my career, I was told to build relationships with everyone I worked with—those above me, beside me, and reporting to me—because you never know what the future may bring. For example, someone who reports to you today could be your boss tomorrow. That advice reshaped how I lead and work. I learned that results matter, but how you achieve them and the people you work with matters even more.

KAIRI ROBERTS, CPA Director
Term: 3 years
Kairi Roberts, CPA, serves as President of Anderson Lampe, P.S., where she strives to provide steady tax guidance and strategic insight through meaningful relationships with both business and individual clients. Outside the office, she enjoys time with her family and a lively household full of beloved pets.
If you could instantly master any hobby tomorrow, what would it be and why? Painting. It would be fun to create something beautiful without needing to reconcile it first.
What’s one skill every future professional should start building now? Relationship and communication skills. Technical expertise is essential, but the ability to connect, collaborate, and build trust is what sustains a long and meaningful career.
What’s a piece of advice you once received that changed how you work? During an internship early in my career, someone told me, “Always be the person people love working with.” That advice stuck with me. I’ve tried to be the colleague who is helpful, responsive, and supportive, and I truly believe that mindset has shaped my career more than any technical skill.
