Floating Worlds: The Visionary Landscapes of Michael Roque Collins

After ten years without a major solo exhibition in his home state, Michael Roque Collins returns to Houston this fall with Floating Worlds: Paintings and Works on Paper, 2015–2025, on view at Foltz Fine Art from October 24 through November 29, 2025. The exhibition brings together over a decade of visionary work across three major series—Transmission of Light, Reliquary, and the eponymous Floating World —offering a profound meditation on the human condition, mythic transformation, and the elusive boundaries between reality and dream.

With over fifty solo exhibitions to his name across internationally recognized institutions, Collins’ reemergence in Houston is more than a homecoming—it’s a full-circle moment. The artist was raised amid the intellectual and spiritual legacy of Houston’s modernist vanguard. His father, Lowell Collins, once led the Museum School at the Museum of Fine Arts, now the Glassell School of Art. Michael’s formative years were spent in a world where painting was both practice and philosophy, where Rothko’s silence and Burchfield’s haunted woods whispered from the walls.

Yet to call Collins a “Houston artist” is to reduce the metaphysical reach of a painter whose work is frequently likened to Goya, Caravaggio, and the literary depths of Rilke or Faulkner. His canvases do not depict scenes; they evoke thresholds. Bleeding ochres, scorched indigos, gardens overtaken by time—these are not images but relics from an inner cosmos. They are, as he calls them, “ethereal membranes,” layered with dream, memory, and morphic resonance.

Floating between allegory and abstraction, Collins’ paintings are inhabited by the recurring forms of decaying architecture, coastal relics, ritual figures, and above all, gardens—lush and overgrown, often consuming what humanity leaves behind. In these gardens, nature is not passive, but a moral force, one that punishes hubris and restores balance. They are spaces of reckoning and regeneration.

The exhibition includes large-scale oil paintings on linen alongside intimately scaled works on paper, all executed with Collins’ distinctive tactile language—scraped, pooled, veiled, and inscribed. His physical process echoes the psychological depth of the work. “I follow the currents of thinking, feeling, and willing,” he says. “Each painting reveals itself through discovery.”

A long-time professor and mentor, recently retired from Houston Christian University, Collins has never painted for fashion or favor. As one curator remarked, “While others chase trends, he constructs temples.” His works are timeless, not because they ignore the present, but because they engage the eternal: beauty, suffering, death, rebirth.

As Floating Worlds makes clear, Collins is not interested in irony or detachment. He paints with a sincerity so unflinching it becomes radical. His art asks viewers to contemplate—not just to look, but to feel, to reckon, to remember.

When asked what he hopes audiences will take from this new body of work, Collins simply said, “Hope. Even if they must travel through darkness to find it.”

That journey—through shadow, ruin, mystery, and ultimately light—is what Floating Worlds invites us to undertake.

FLOATING WORLDS

In my most recent solo exhibition entitled, Floating Worlds, all of the art, which includes large, medium and small works of oil on linen, and works on paper, I explore lush surfaces, which combine multiple symbolic elements. I investigate themes such as the symbiotic, romantic relationship of darkness and light, the cyclical nature of life and death, the complexities of inner psychological life, and the mysteries and vital importance of individual spirituality. These themes find creative expression through a rich system of synergistically connected metaphoric subjects: dreams of primitive ritual forms, the figure, modern day power plants, classical architectural forms, coastal subjects, and above all, gardens. These are all conceived in an allegorical manner where ideas are expressed in an indeterminatestatehopefullyleavingtheviewerfloatinginworldsofmystery.

In many recent series the garden spaces contain verdant vegetation, which erupts with life amidst abandoned factories, decaying ancient roman buildings and other vestiges of a collapsed human presence. In my paintings nature becomes a punitive element. The architecture is being eviscerated by nature. The buildings are metaphors for our naiveté in believing that nature may be controlled and that it is somehow independent to what humankind inflicts on the planet. Since childhood, I continue to be influenced by my native coastal surroundings, characterized by subtropical vegetation and sweltering, humid atmosphere and symbolic references to water. I imbue these and other elements drawn from my personal experience into a mystical artistic vision articulating the human condition which I feelpossessesacertainterriblebeauty.

The process of my painting relates to my body movement and to the texture of surface, both its opacity and translucency. Pigment is applied by knife, hand, brush, scraping, veiling and pooling. The sequence of feeding the surface is completely subject to the energy held in each unique painting which I am sensitive to as the content evolves. Most ideas begin in a chiaroscuro world as color develops of its ownaccord. I follow the currents of thinking, feeling and willing, which will allow discovery toemerge.

Most fundamentally, my painting relates to the tenants of Post Symbolism, where each painting is an ethereal membrane suggesting the poetic as experienced through dreams, memory, mystery, and morphic resonance. The paintings generate an aura of evanescence conveying essential ambiguities. The resulting opposing thematic elements are centered in supernatural realms where enlightenment and darkness, the mythic and quotidian, by the balancing of abstraction and representation, are revealed in visions of the cyclic patterns of destructionandcreationpresentinnature.Thediscoveredsubjects in eachpainting reveal an art balancing the creative notions of art about art and art about life and the humancondition.

Reliquaries Series: After the Burning, 2018-2019 oil on linen

72 x 60 in Framed 75 x 63 x 2.75 in $36,000.00

After the Burning was inspired in a dream by a fire we experienced in our family, and one that took the life of my beloved grandmother. Rather than expressing the worst recollection of this event, the painting celebrates her life with a setting of apparent flowers. The flowers were comprised of Ethnographic passport forms carved from African elephant knee caps. These passports were used as a form of identification when passing from one tribe to another, one place to another. And now my "Passport Flowers" express the journey my grandmother took in her passing. My dream painting of After the Burning also shows the many shelves of primitive art that I remember after the fire. The darkened interior gives way to to an Italian vista filled with the painterly suggestion of a warm illumination, worthy of receiving her spirit.

Dream of Spindle Twigs evolves from a dream and reflects a studio imagined as a Gothic realm where all manner of ancestry recognition might be visible. My dream featured the beginning of a luminous painting resting within the rich dark recesses of a memory of our shared past where the power of the creative is realized through both destruction and creation mythology. My Spindle Twigs subjects, so vivid in my dreams, are from my personal mythological realm and are often repeating icons that strip away down to the bone, the denial, guilt and fear so prevalent in our current splenetic era. The painting of these personal mythological beings is surrounded by all manner of primitive collectibles, which my father and I have so valued.

The foreground of the painting is the faint recognition of my father's image, an everyday man, holding jade green stones in hopes of finding a deeper meaning t his carvings, meaning that will connect to the primitive forms represented in the painting. Meanings which might free us from the constraints of contemporary tradition drowning in the lust for new forms while overlooking the vast rich traditions so plentifully expressed in our collective past. This painting personally unlocks the connective tissues holding the past, present and future together in a deep sense of allegic mystery, which drive me as an artist and will always validate the need for painting as a powerful expression of our shared humanity.

A dreamscape reveals a lake or pond near Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli, Italy. It is filled with various forms of primitive sculpture forms. The distant illumination sheds light on the threatening body of water and further defines the flowers and forms I dreamed of as a child. The wooden birds sit precariously near the edge of the table. The flowers may portray forms of beauty or the masks and mystery of an unspecified culture.

VENETIAN SERIES & BEYOND

As a child the gondolier dreamed of being a pirate.

He recalls the night before, his young wife asleep in bed. The water quivers, and his memory of home fades as the canal fills with mist.

In the early morning light, the air is teeming with the dust of death, like Kosovo after the bomb. (He remembers the explosion, hears it again and again, as the tour guide announces a decayed stone building where a great artist once lived, an example of byzantine architecture.)

In the distance, a view of the city emerges, gleaming like a treasure chest.

You know it's a trap, he thinks, but still can't help sailing towards it.

Michael Roque Collins (American, b. 1955)

Michael Roque Collins is an artist recognized for producing some of the most profoundly affecting figurative Post Symbolist paintings seen today in Contemporary art. He was born in Houston, Texas, in 1955 and maintains his primary studio in this Gulf Coast city.

His lush oil paintings rip deep meaning from thick paint and bold line. Layering and slicing with his brush and palette knife, he mines the metaphorical mysteries of archetypal symbols—especially those of regeneration and renewal. For both his style and subject matter, Collins has been described by critics as one of the most unique painters whose work is exhibited in Santa Fe.

His oil-on-linen paintings and mixed media paintings on photographs bear homage to the transcendence that can be found in compassionate contemplation of the cycling and balance between enlightenment and darkness, creation and destruction, order and disorder, both in the human condition and the natural world. It has been said that his paintings have an American spiritual resonance with the paintings of Anselm Kiefer or Gerhard Richter. They are conduits to memories that lie deeply buried in our childhood psyches as well as universal, archetypal memories of the sublime. In his paintings we find Blakean beauty resident in the terrible. An imagistic light seems to come from within, augmenting the sense of mystery and transforming metaphorical fields of darkness into parables of hope for the future.

Collins acknowledges a variety of influences, including Max Beckmann, Charles Burchfield, JWT Turner and the Hudson River School. Primitive art objects collected by his father gave him early exposure to strong and direct expressions of the supernatural within the natural environment of daily life. Though these influences were important to the developing foundations of his art, his distinctive style originates from his personal conception of light, value, color and lines. Ideas emerge from his dreams, revealing visions of the conscious and unconscious mind.

Born in Texas in 1955, Collins earned a BFA from the University of Houston in 1978 and later earned an MFA in painting from Southern Methodist University. Since the mid-1970s he has directed the Lowell Collins School of Art in Houston; he has also held positions on the art faculties of several universities.

His art has been curated in more than 250 group exhibitions in the U.S., Cuba, Peru, Germany, China, Mexico, France, Denmark, Greece, India, and Turkey. His paintings have received more than 50 juried awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts-Middle American Arts Alliance grant for excellence in painting and works on paper, as well as three Cultural Arts Council of Houston grant awards for excellence in painting. Collins has held many university teaching positions and is currently the Senior Director of the Visual Arts Department, at Houston Baptist University, where he is also Artist-in-Residence in Painting, Professor of Art and focuses on teaching in the MFA program.

From Ruins To Resurrection/Sacred Landscapes of Michael Roque Collins, a hardbound publication of his work published in 2009 by Halcyon Press, features essays by Ken Marvel, owner/director of LewAllen Galleries; Jim Edwards, a distinguished curator and expert of the art of the American West; and Edward Lucie-Smith, an internationally renowned art writer in England and author of more than 100 canonical texts covering the themes found in contemporary art.

His works have been favorably reviewed in a variety of international arts publications, such as Art News Magazine, Art In America, Art Lies, and Art World Magazine. Collins has had over 50 solo exhibitions at nationally and internationally recognized gallery and museum venues including Foltz Fine Art in Houston, Texas, LewAllen Galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Gerald Peters Gallery in Dallas, Texas, Art Space/Virginia Miller Galleries in Miami, Florida, Redbud Gallery in Houston, Texas, La Galerie K in Paris, France, and spaces in Santiago, Cuba, Berlin and Leipzig, Germany. His works may be seen in 13 museums in the U.S., including The Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi, Texas, Bass Museum in Miami, Florida, The Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, Louisiana, the El Paso Museum of Art in San Antonio, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, as well numerous corporate collections.
