Charlotte Seifert: Ordinary Time
Foltz Fine Art presents Charlotte Seifert: Ordinary Time, a solo exhibition of new work by Houston based artist Charlotte Seifert, on view from January 24 through March 7, 2026. The exhibition opens with a public reception on Saturday, January , from to PM, and runs concurrently with Susu Meyer: In Passing.
Ordinary Time originates from Seifert’s Lenten practice, during which she committed to making one drawing each day. Working with crayons on scraps of found paper, she focused on household plants as a means of sustained observation and quiet attention. These daily sessions, often held in the evening, varied in duration and gradually dissolved the artist’s awareness of measured time.
Through layered color and mark, Seifert discovered depth and nuance within modest materials. Several of these intimate drawings form the foundation for the works in the exhibition. As her thinking evolved, Seifert expanded the concept beyond Lent to ordinary time, a term from the liturgical calendar describing periods unmarked by celebration or anticipation.
Imagery drawn from daily walks and memories of the Texas coast and Colorado mountains informed subsequent monotypes and paintings. Translating her drawings into monotypes, Seifert simplified and recombined forms, while landscape sketches evolved into large scale, gestural canvases such as Daily News and Through the Trees. Across media, her work reflects an ongoing engagement with memory, perception, and the quiet passage of time.
Through painting, drawing, and printmaking, Ordinary Time honors the significance of everyday experience, offering a contemplative meditation on attention, duration, and the beauty of the unremarked moment.

ArtistStatement
MyworkbeganasaLentenpractice:adailydrawingofhouseholdplantsusingcrayonsonscrapsofpaper. Eachevening,Iwouldsitandobservesometimesforminutes,sometimesforhours,oftenlosingtrackof time.Thesimpleactoflayeringcolorwithcrayonsbecamesurprisinglyrich,revealingunexpecteddepthand nuance.Someofthesedrawingsareincludedinthisexhibition.
Asthedayspassed,myreflectionsmovedbeyondthe40daysofLenttoOrdinaryTime,thosequieter, unmarkeddaysthatmakeupmostofourlives.Dailywalks,fleetingobservations,memoriesoftimespentat thebeachorinthemountainsbecamemysourcematerial.
Fromthecrayondrawings,Idevelopedmonotypesbysimplifyingandcombiningimagerytocreatenew compositions.IalsomadepaintingsinspiredbysketchesfromtheTexascoastandtheColoradomountains. MyongoinginterestincapturingwhatIseeandfeelasImovethroughtimeledtolarge,gesturalworks likeDailyNewsandThroughtheTrees.
Mypractice,whetherpainting,drawing,orprintmaking,isgroundedintheeveryday.Itisawayof rememberingandhonoringtherhythms,reflections,andbeautyofordinarytime.
