Following the first reading of the proposed mid-year amendments for the city’s 2018-19 budget, Winter Garden commissioners received an update on the hiring goals for the city’s police department.
The ordinance, labeled Ordinance 19-24, includes an amendment involving $305,187 from the $4.46 million budget. Initially, the $305,187 was reserved for police personnel costs, but the funds were not spent because of existing police officer SEE POLICE PAGE 4

State lawmakers offer thoughts, update on new legislation at chamber GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR
The Ocoee Police and Fire Department Honor Guards served in the city’s Memorial Day ceremony.
Some gave all I
The guest speaker for Winter Garden’s event was retired Col. Wayne Mendez, of the U.S. Air Force.
n reverence of Memorial Day, local community leaders and residents paid to tribute during a series of services and ceremonies to those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The city of Ocoee first honored those brave men and women during its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Tom Ison Senior and Veterans Center on Friday, May 24. Ocoee resident Sherrí Gladney sang the national anthem and attendees heard from keynote speaker and U.S. Army veteran Anthony Gladney. The city of Winter Garden also honored those who died in serving the nation Monday, May 27, at its Memorial Day Service. At Veterans Memorial Park, Kurt
Gies, commander of the Hugh T. Gregory American Legion Post 63, led the ceremony that featured patriotic music courtesy of Geoff Bashioum. Col. Wayne Mendez spoke about his time in the U.S. Air Force, paying tribute to those he served with who lost their lives. That same day, Woodlawn Memorial Park & Funeral Home hosted its 69th annual Memorial Day Service. Hundreds attended the hourlong event, which included keynote speakers retired Army Col. Calvin Wimbish, Senior Chief Petty Officer Charles Gilman of the Navy, and Sgt. 1st Class Samuel Santiago. —TIM FREED AND HANNAH SWAYZE
The West Orange Chamber of Commerce invited state legislators to update attendees on the recent issues to come up in Tallahassee during the 2019 legislative session. The guest speakers in attendance included Sen. Victor Torres, Rep. Geraldine Thompson, Rep. Bruce Antone, Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith and Rep. Anthony Sabatini. The speakers were asked to provide their opinions and explain the context of recently passed legislation and other issues affecting west Orange County. The moderator, Jay Galbraith from Valencia College, first suggested lawmakers share their thoughts on the recent 34% cut to funding for Visit Florida – the state’s tourism marketing corporation. VISIT FLORIDA
The legislators explained state lawmakers decided to cut the funding to Visit Florida because there’s doubt about how much Visit Florida’s marketing efforts contribute to the state’s tourism levels. Thompson said the legislature had also wanted to find out if there was a way to measure the benefit Visit Florida provides in comparison to the regular marketing of tourist destinations, themselves. Thus, they gave the organization a year to prove its value to the legislature. “I don’t support the elimination of Visit Florida, as has been proposed by some,” Smith said. “I think this is about weighing properties. The question is, how valuable is it in comparison to other priorities. … The debate here is how much is Visit Florida spending contributing to the tourism we see in Florida?” HOME RULE

Attendees and veterans of Woodland’s event showed their gratitude and respect for those who died in the line of duty.
U.S. Army veteran Anthony Gladney spoke about his experiences serving the country and the importance of Memorial Day at Ocoee’s event.
Judd Kunneman read roll call for local military service members killed in World War I and placed the wreath in front of the Veterans Memorial at the Memorial Day Service in Winter Garden.
The lawmakers were also asked to offer their thoughts on Home Rule. The state recently passed several bills, including a bill regarding vegetable gardens in residential front yards, that several local governments believe create an unnecessary intrusion on their authority and involve issues that, they perceive, are best left to a local community. While Smith, Antone and Thompson vehemently defended the idea of Home Rule and said they believed in allowing ‘local solutions to local problems,’ Sabatini expressed a contradicting opinion.
“I believe that we should always shoot for government that is small, has low taxes and less regulations no matter what level it is,” Sabatini said. “Local government has been ballooning in Florida over the last few decades. … And so, I’m very proud this year we did a lot to stop the creeping control of local government in Florida.” SEMINOLE DEAL
Another issue discussed during the luncheon was the ongoing negotiation between state lawmakers and the Seminole Tribe to reach a new deal. The tribe, which operates several gambling facilities in the state, shares about $300 to 350 million in revenue per year with the state, but that revenue has been jeopardized ever since a federal judge ruled that Florida violated the agreement. The legislature and the tribe are now attempting to reach a new deal by the end of May, when the current agreement expires, the legislators said. ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
The speakers also briefly spoke about environmental and water policy. Thompson explained some environmental priorities were not funded because a lot of the state’s resources were diverted to communities in the Florida panhandle impacted by Hurricane Michael. “We know that our waterways are very important,” Thompson said. “We’re seeing fertilizer washing into the waterways, and we all have some responsibility for that. But people have always come to Florida because of that environment, because of our natural resources. And those are things we absolutely have to protect.” EDUCATION FUNDING
The moderator’s last question involved K-12 and college education. He requested the legislators express their thoughts on the recent discussion surrounding education issues. Smith commented that the recent misspending issue that occurred at the University of Central Florida spurred the legislature to require more accountability from the board of trustees in state universities. Antone, Sabatini, Torres and Thompson said they were in favor of school choice, but disagreed with diverting funds from public schools to charter schools via the voucher program, because charter schools are not held to the same standards and accountability measures as public schools.

aitlyn Fleming has applied twice in recent years to go out and share the gospel through Youth with a Mission, but neither time seemed right. This time, however, Fleming felt called to complete the acceptance process, and she currently is in training for an eight-week mission experience in Thailand and Cambodia. “The staff has prayed about where in the world the Lord wants us to go to,” Fleming said. “They give us the locations. I prayed, and I feel like the Lord chose Thailand and Cambodia for me to go to.” The 23-year-old Winter Garden resident is halfway through a three-month Disciple Training School program through YWAM, a Christian missions organization that equips committed messengers with the tools necessary for effectively sharing God’s love around the world. She is taking classes to prepare her for her mission and going into the community on outreach assignments, which include visiting residents at Health Central Park, in Winter Garden, and conversing with the Friday-night crowd at Lake Eola, in Orlando. In two weeks, Fleming will leave the United States and embark on an incredible journey that will take her halfway around the world to share the gospel. The outreach itinerary and costs still are being finalized for her and her team, but they know they are going to Cambodia for four weeks and then to Bangkok for another four, where they will stay at a YWAM base. Fleming said she expects to
vacancies in the Winter Garden Police Department. Currently, the department has 18 vacancies, with 14 new recruits in various stages of the application process, Winter Garden Police Chief Steve Graham informed commissioners during the May 23 meeting. “Police departments are never fully staffed,” Graham said. “We have 90 sworn officers, and today, we have 18 vacancies. Well, two fewer vacancies after tonight because we’re picking up two new recruits at the academy tonight. But we have 14 total in process, so if all those succeed, we’ll still need four more.” To make up for their vacancies, the department pays existing officers overtime and requires specialty units to cover patrol duties, Graham said. The challenge to hire enough officers to meet their goal is something many departments face, particularly following the passage of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, he said. “There’s a shortage of police officers in the whole area — the Sheriff’s Office is down about 80,” Graham said. “So we’re down, too, and we need to hire, but the SRO vacancies have just added to it. And we’re hiring the 14 new officers, but the process takes a long time, because it takes months to go through the background investigation. They apply, and if it looks like they’re going to make it through the first hurdle, then we invite them to take a written test and a physical test that involves an obstacle course. And if you do well on those, then they give you an oral board. Once you pass the oral board, then you fill out the rest of the application.” Graham assured city leaders the department has been making great progress with hiring goals and preparing for new school resource officers it may need in the future. “I’m looking into the future, because we didn’t have any coverage in the schools a couple of years ago,” he said. “And because of the new law following Marjory Stoneman, we’ll need more officers. We don’t have any high schools in the city, but we went from zero to needing to eventually cover seven schools — possibly eight.

n To continue meeting the requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program and Florida Building Code, city commissioners approved the first reading of an ordinance amendment regarding permitting, construction and design standards relating to floods. The updated standards are intended to minimize loss from flooding in FEMA-designated flood hazard areas. n Commissioners approved Ordinance 19-22, which details an applicant’s request for the city to vacate an easement currently encumbering two lots in the Winter Garden Commerce Center. The owner plans to combine both lots to construct a warehouse/office.

show love to women who have been exposed to sex trafficking. “You definitely have to be strong and just trust the Lord that he will give you the right things to say,” she said. “We’re letting them know that there’s someone who loves them. It’s going to be tough but good.” In addition, her work could involve helping with local Vacation Bible School programs and walking through communities speaking to citizens about Christianity. “We’re always in groups, and we have translators as well,” Fleming said. “We have locals to help us with what’s going on around us. We have a good mixture of men and women on our team. We’re being led by a family, mom and dad and kids — they’ve been to Thailand before.” Fleming is $2,400 shy of the $9,000 necessary for her trip, but she has faith she will raise the difference. “I did a lot of fundraising,” she said. “I asked the Lord how he wanted me to fundraise, and I felt like he was telling me to do it in a way that would help people locally.” She started a small meal-prep business, making and selling overnight oats in a jar through Instagram and a blog and at several local gyms. The owners of The Farmacy, where Fleming works, allowed her to sell the oat jars there, as well, and keep all the profits. She created T-shirts and is selling those, too, in hopes of reaching her goal. “I had applied to go to YWAM three times; I applied three years ago but then removed myself

because I didn’t think I would have the finances,” she said. “Then I applied the next year … but it just wasn’t the time to go. So three years later, I felt it on my heart to go. I got accepted again and told myself I wasn’t going to back out. Through this, God has taught me a lot of about commitment and trusting Him.” Fleming has taken two mission trips to Haiti and has been on numerous stateside missions in the Southern states — spreading God’s word and God’s love. “Love is such a universal language,” she said. “It’s like a smile or a gesture or a hello — just seeing a stranger and telling them, ‘Do you know how much you’re loved?’ and making their day. … I want to learn how to disciple in a way that’s everyday life.”

Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints location, would be located at 17000 Davenport Road in Winter Garden, at the southwest corner of Davenport and Avalon roads. The church seeks to build a 16,000-square-foot religious-use facility on an 18.24-acre parcel. The church’s requests presented at the meeting were twofold: obtain a special exception to allow a religious-use facility and obtain a variance to allow a 66.33-foot spire. In a packed media center at Whispering Oak Elementary, Russell Ottenberg — a civil engineer/ planner representing the church — said the building would have a maximum seating capacity of 576, but normal seating would fit about 212. “We have placed the building up as close to Avalon Road as possible,” Ottenberg said. “We have parking to the side and around the back and a dry stormwater facility that will be on the south side. We’ve done some preliminary engineering on this … because of some of the outfall issues and treatment issues we’ve decided to retain the water onsite rather than discharge it so it’s not discharging into any of the lakes or anything like that, so that’s more of a benefit to the surrounding area.” The main entrance would be located off Avalon Road, with a secondary entrance off Davenport Road. The building would be about 27 feet tall, but the church is asking for a height variance to allow for
the steeple. The maximum building height allowed within the zoning district is 35 feet. “We’re proposing to go higher than (35 feet) with the steeple,” Ottenberg said. “It’s a spike — it’s got very little mass, and it’s not like we’re going up with a multi-story building in this area.” Architect Alberto Portela assured residents the church is taking the local construction and vernacular into consideration throughout the designing process. He added that although many LDS churches have all-brick buildings, they felt the style wasn’t conducive to the surrounding area. “We’ve tried to tie in a lot of the vernacular in terms of the local architecture,” Portela said. “We’re looking at the possibility of using stone on the bottom, we’re looking at using stucco. The thought process was to tie with the neighborhood in terms of materials used for the building. We took into consideration the local vernacular we have in this area.” But residents still brought many concerns. Although they had no issue with the land being used for religious purposes, they feared setting a precedent with further non-residential construction in a rural settlement. Some accused the county of not taking the residents’ right to have peaceful habitation into account, saying the idea of development before infrastructure is “ludicrous.” They mentioned the additional traffic that surrounding roads would have to handle should the project and requests be
approved, asking also when Avalon and Marsh roads were going to be widened. Ottenberg said they had consulted with traffic engineers who ran the numbers and had no concerns for this project, to which residents laughed. Orange County District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey told residents there are about 1,000 people a week moving to the Orange County area. “If we built roads 24/7, we could not keep ahead of 1,000 people a week moving here,” VanderLey said. “That’s a statistic you all need to understand right out of the gate. … People don’t call us ahead five years and make a reservation to move to Horizon West or wherever they’re going to move so that we know predictably how to build the roads ahead of time. When they get here, it triggers us starting to plan for the road improvements. The problem is it takes about six months to build a house and six years to build a road.” Residents also asked why the church chose this particular piece of land and what days and times the services would take place. Ottenberg said the church didn’t yet have specifics on service times, but it chose this location after six months of property search throughout the Horizon West and Avalon areas. The church’s request for the special exception and height variance will go to the Board of Zoning Adjustment June 6 and then to the Board of County Commissioners July 2.

VanderLey mostly expects to discuss infrastructure issues. She believes these are the problems people feel first. This was the case in 2018, when concerns were raised by residents about not only road construction but also a lack of fire stations in Horizon West. This conversation led to the opening of a temporary station, Fire Station 44, in April. Also raised last year was the concern of a congested three-way intersection between Summerlake Park Boulevard, and Ficquette Road and Reams roads. Because of the rapid population growth, what was once a rarely used road is now causing traffic issues in the residential area. Orange County officials have installed temporary stop signs as they wait for parts for a traffic light to arrive for installation, VanderLey said. Their issues come in part from budget constraints on the county’s end, because property taxes aren’t collected until the end of the year, she said. VanderLey also pointed out the timeline disparity between building houses — which can take anywhere from six months to a year — and roads — which, including planning, can take about six years. Cynthia Dailey, publisher of the Horizon West Happenings Community Lifestyle Guide, said residents have told her they believe stop signs are not enough. She said residents still are unsatisfied with the amount of traffic in the area and the behavior of other drivers at the intersection. Dailey said school openings also will be discussed.

Orange County officials will hold a community-wide town hall meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at Windermere High School, 5523 Winter Garden-Vineland Road, Windermere. Representatives from the area’s emergency services, Orange County Public Schools and local government will be present. The meeting will begin with a presentation, and all officials will be available to answer questions. Also in attendance will be Orange County District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey. “There’s so much going on in our district that we try to get out there at least once a year,” VanderLey said. “Now, you can access all of that information via our apps that Orange County has all the time, but I think it’s helpful for people once a year to get all of us in the same room together and let us go over what’s coming up and then ask questions.” The meeting is one of three town halls conducted in District 1. One is in Dr. Phillips, one is in Horizon West, and another will be held later in the year in the Williamsburg area. The goal is to keep people in the community up-to-date with changes going on in each particular area, VanderLey said. “These are very beneficial for us in Orange County, too, because not only are we sharing what’s coming up, but we’re hearing about the concerns of the residents and then we’re able to formulate plans to address those concerns in very tangible ways,” VanderLey said.

Last year, the Winter Garden resident was invited to participate but turned down the chance because his friend couldn’t go. It took a little inspiration from his

But here he was now, sitting atop his dad’s old bike, speeding around the course with superhero speed. “I really liked it and I was fast — really, really fast, and I just felt like my legs wanted to go,” said the 20-year-old Bender, who has Down syndrome. “I just wanted to get out there and nail it and go fast.” SEE BENDER PAGE 10

It may just be a husk of beams and metal surrounded by construction now, but the new Top Gun Orlando facility taking shape on South Bluford Avenue in Ocoee is bound for big things. Although there is no definitive opening date set, the plan is to it be open by the fall — hopefully no later than November — said Roger MacClellan, who co-owns the
gym alongside his wife, Anni. And this new facility, which takes up 4.5 acres in Ocoee, will offer new programming and opportunities for kids throughout the area. “First of all, it’s (tailor made) for the purpose of training athletes — cheer athletes and other athletes,” MacClellan said. “Its large, clear span — all one level flooring — allows you to do a lot more things SEE TOP GUN PAGE 10

Kinley Casey A member of the West Orange Babe Ruth 8U team, Kinley Casey is a multi-tool player who spends his time either on the mound or out at second base. A fan of the Atlanta Braves and Red Sox, Casey’s biggest highlight of his young baseball-playing career is hitting an in-the-park home run during a game.
What is your favorite thing about playing baseball? I like fielding and batting — I like that I get to hit the ball.
THE BASICS
What is the hardest thing about playing baseball? Not doing the right thing. Making the throw to the base — (the hardest part is) how high or low I throw it. How long have you been playing baseball for, and have you played other positions besides second and pitcher? I’ve played for three years. And yeah, I’ve played outfield, shortstop and third before. Do you have a favorite player that you enjoy watching? I have a favorite team and player — I like the Atlanta Braves and the Boston Red Sox, and my favorite player is Freddie Freeman (he’s on the Braves). I just like him. If you could play another position, what would you want to play? Except for pitcher? Shortstop — yeah, (it comes at you fast) but I could go get the ball. Is baseball your favorite sport? And are there any other sports you enjoy? Yeah, but I like other sports. I like football and hockey — in hockey I like the (Boston) Bruins and in football I like the (New England) Patriots.
TEAM: West Orange Babe Ruth 8U POSITION: Pitcher/ Second BATS/THROWS: Left/ Right AGE: 8 SCHOOL: Ocoee Elementary
What’s one thing you’re working on to get better at when it comes to baseball? My hitting, because this machine comes in really fast. It’s right down the middle usually. Outside of playing baseball, what do you enjoy doing? I like to play outside and play video games — I play a lot. After you finish playing, what’s your favorite thing to eat? Usually pizza. I like a regular plain cheese pizza (from) the Winter Garden Pizza Company. If you could visit anyplace in the world, where would you want to go? The (Atlanta) Braves’ ballpark — I haven’t been to either one (the old or new stadium). I heard you got to do something special during one of the Atlanta Braves’ spring training games this season. What did you get to do? I got to (go on the field and) put the rosin bag up there on the pitcher’s mound. I was nervous. Since you’ve been playing baseball, is there a moment that stands out to you? An infield home run. I hit it to the fence and I went all the way around. — TROY HERRING

Bender brings home the gold CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9
Bender’s reluctance to participate disappeared once he got on his bicycle. He won not one, but two gold medals Saturday, May 18, in the 2K and 5K races. On both occasions — following his two races — Bender took to the winner’s podium, standing tall and proud, because he knew one thing: He was the champion. “I feel like I’m a champion — I achieved that,” Bender said. “I was happy — really happy — and I was excited. I really, really liked it, and I felt like I wanted to win. “My first medal was a golden medal…. I’m on the highest step and I feel like I’m a champion,” he said. Seeing her son compete and succeed in such a way is something DerHovanesian always knew he could do — despite what people told her when Bender was little. In fact, when Bender was born, DerHovanesian was told that because of his Down syndrome, he would never be able to ride a bike. He had been written off from ever doing a basic kid activity, because of his disability, before he could even try. Needless to say, that didn’t sit well with DerHovanesian, who started working with him at a young age. “I had him on bikes with big, fat training wheels, and he really didn’t care — he was biking with everybody else,” DerHovanesian said. “And finally his best friend’s father said, ‘He doesn’t need that’ — his son is almost the same age as Joshua. “One day, we just took off the wheels, and he was riding — it was like he knew how to do it instinctively after riding with the training wheels,” DerHovanesian said. “He’s just always been very physical and capable of learning things pretty quickly. Our family is pretty active, and I guess I

wasn’t surprised when he could just take off on the bike.” Since first jumping on a bike as a kid, Bender has come a long way in his sport — thanks in large part to the support of his family. And since joining Special Olympics about a decade ago, as well as the West Orange-based Renegades, Bender has grown by leaps and bounds. Through that time, he participated in many sports outside of cycling — including basketball, swimming and volleyball — but every time, Bender came back to his old bike. That’s where he got to be just like his favorite superhero: Barry Allen, aka the Flash. Just like The Flash, Bender taps into the proverbial Speed Force — the source of his super speed. “Yes, I am (the fastest man alive),” Bender said with a laugh. “I just like him — the Flash is just so fast. He is my favorite, and I watch his movies a lot. I want to become him.” Although that process — if you go by the comics — would take dangerous chemicals and a bolt of lightning, Bender said he would stick to the more practical approach of riding his bike whenever he gets that chance.
Not only is bicycling a way for Bender to compete, but also it’s a family activity for him. Quite often after dinner, Bender and his family take to the neighborhood or to the West Orange Trail to enjoy some time outdoors. Even riding as a family, Bender still rides with the same passion he does on the Special Olympics course. “He’s a wild man out there,” DerHovanesian said with a laugh. “I’m a little worried about how he is riding, but he loves riding bikes — we’ve gone on the trail for years — and it has been a family thing, and I think that is why he picked it up so easily. As a family that’s what we have been doing for so many years.” Riding like a wild man is all a part of the confidence Bender has built over the years — proving that one’s disability shouldn’t be seen as a detriment to what a person can do. “He loves having Down syndrome; he thinks it makes him famous and unique — he wouldn’t want it any other way,” DerHovanesian said. “I don’t know where he gets his confidence, but he loves himself and he is a very independent person and he just loves life.”
Top Gun brings the cheer CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9
with not having columns in the middle of the building. “For our tumbling — a big part of cheerleading is tumbling — we have some real neat features (such as) in-ground foam block pits, in-ground trampolines and things like that that will attract kids,” he said. Although training some of the area’s top cheerleaders will remain a priority, the gym will reach out to other athletes in different sports, and hold camps and other events that include sports such as indoor soccer and lacrosse. Throw in the green grass lot to the left of the building, and Top Gun also has space to cater to kids who are interested in participating in field sports. “(We’re excited) to be able to grow the cheerleading business, but also to have a place for kids — all types of kids — to do all types of activities,” MacClellan said. “Cheer will be a big function that we do, but cheer only takes up probably about 30% of the time in the building, so we are just excited to have an awesome place where kids can do all different type sports and other fun fitness-related activities under one roof, in air conditioning and
in a safe environment.” Finally, Top Gun will feature a new training room and tranquility room. The former will be the spot where kids can go to be treated for any type of injury, while the latter will offer a spalike experience. Along with the new perks for young athletes, the new facility also takes into account the parents as well, who now will have multiple viewing rooms in which to relax. One of those viewing rooms will come in the form of a coffee shop-style café, so parents will be able to grab a snack and drink while they wait around. By offering more things to both adults and kids, it makes for a better — and more familial — experience, Anni said. “It will just open up a whole bunch of new opportunities to feed the surrounding community,” Anni said. “We just really want to be a part of lots of kids’ lives — which we have been over the years anyway, but we want to branch out into more things than just cheerleading.” The plan for the facility has been in the works for nearly two years, but the MacClellans didn’t close on the property until December. Construction started in February, after having
to change zonings and take care of the small specifics required to get the facility approved months prior. And as the construction work continues on throughout the next several months, Top Gun will continue offering its services in the facility located next to West Oaks Mall in Ocoee — the original location that opened its doors five years ago. In the meantime, the MacClellans are sketching out ideas for the loads of summer camps that they’ll put on, which will teach kids more than just cheerleading and sports. “One of our big things is just all the life lessons that come along with doing this kind of sport and sticking to it,” Anni said. “I just created a post about my daughter on my Facebook page about all the life lessons that she has learned in the last 11 years she has been cheerleading, and it is everything from just complete failure to the biggest of success in her cheer world. “Just seeing kids reach their goal and being there for them when they fell, but celebrating with them when they succeed — those are just all the things that we want to be a part of in their lives,” Anni said.

From “Social News and Notes”: Larry Allen Grimes has arrived to reign over the household of Lee and Mable Grimes, much to their delight and the delight of the two other children, Hugh and Harriet. Without a doubt, his influence also will be strongly felt in the households of his grandparents, the J.L. Dillards.

John Rees, principal of Lakeview High School, has announced commencement programs. Baccalaureate services will be held at Oakland Presbyterian Church. Graduation exercises will be in the school auditorium with Anne Arnold as valedictorian and James Gay Jr. as salutatorian. Principal Robert Williams will award diplomas to 108 Ocoee High School seniors at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Valedictorian is Ina Jean Spivey, and salutatorian is Bernadette Foley. Principal Sam Singhaus will award diplomas to 163 seniors in the Lakeview High School auditorium. Brett Engstrom is valedictorian. Johnny Harrell, a member of Lakeview’s graduating class, has the distinction of being the only student ever to play in the senior band for six years. In the seventh grade at Lakeview, he started in the beginner band and was promoted to
FROM THE ARCHIVES Winter Garden native Selby Burch (1929-2014) stands with Dixie Boy, his P-51 Mustang. Burch was only 16 years old when his plane was manufactured in 1945. Too young to sign on for World War II, he learned to fly J-3 Cubs and Aeronca Chiefs in Winter Garden, lifting off from a cow pasture. Burch fought in Korea and then returned home to Florida to begin a land-clearing business, flying various craft from one grove to another. He eventually traded his Beechcraft Bonanza for his first Mustang P-51. In 2005, Burch purchased the Mustang that he christened Dixie Boy upon seeing it undergoing haphazard repairs at a Texas airstrip. Burch and a team of dedicated restorationists, led by Gary Norville’s American Aero Services, appreciated and understood the Mustang’s legacy and heritage and, after four years, its brilliant silver form once again graced the skies.
