A PROUD HERITAGE An exhibit of photos featuring east Winter Garden residents and structures is on display at City Hall. COMMUNITY EDITOR
T
wenty years ago, photographer Peter Schreyer set out to document local small towns in a joint project of Orange County Government and Crealdé School of Art in Winter Park. His focus was on east Winter Garden, South Apopka, Bithlo and Taft, and when the exhibit closed, the photos — taken by Schreyer and two other photographers, Michael Turner and Rick Lang — were given to the communities featured. The images depicting Winter Garden’s black community were given to the city, which chose to display the photos at the Maxey Community Center. They are still hanging there. “The project has been well taken care of at the Maxey Center,” Schreyer said. “I always hoped that one day I could go back and add to that.” He got his wish. The city of Winter Garden reached out to him two years ago

His future plans include opening an laundromat and upgrading existing apartment homes.
with a request to freshen up the exhibit and add more photos. The project was updated and put on display at City Hall. “It was a dream for me, a documented photographer, to revisit it,” Schreyer said. Last fall, city officials contacted him again — with another request to expand the exhibit. “They wanted to include people who could have an influence on seeing the future of that neighborhood,” he said. “As things are changing everywhere, and Winter Garden is growing by leaps and bounds, the city wants to work with people in the community.” City Manager Mike Bollhoefer selected seven residents and three locations. “Mike and his team looked at people who had either had a lot of investment, or doing community work, a pastor, the center that works with the kids, someone taking an old business and trying to revive it, like Tosha (John Lewis), and people like Mr. (Don) Rogers, who has properties,” he said. Schreyer, who loves to tell stories of people and places through his camera lens, eagerly said yes again. The result is “A Proud Heritage: Leading Winter Garden’s Historical African American Community Into the Future,” which will be displayed at City Hall through April 30. This exhibit includes 10 photos from last year and five new ones — with oral histories — and revisits Winter Garden’s black community 20 years after it first was documented. “It’s neat that the county created and funded the project initially and now the city is embracing the project,” Schreyer said. “I’m honored to do the work. It’s such a fun project and such wonderful people. I hope it will help the community with the future.” Schreyer is director of Crealdé School of Art, and he said since that 1998 photography collaboration, the art school has been teaching free art sampler classes for children every week from fall to spring at the Maxey Community Center.

Always willing to discuss the issues, and free of any potential business conflicts, Joseph Richardson is the independent candidate who can and will make the decisions that include everyone and move Winter Garden forward.

discussed an infrastructure project to bring improvements to the intersection of Fullers Cross and Ocoee Apopka roads. The discussion began when resident Greg Keether asked commissioners the status of the improvements planned for the intersection. The city and the county have been working together to improve the intersection by adding leftturn lanes to each leg of the intersection. Although city and county officials began the process to improve the intersection last year, those improvements have stalled because of high construction costs. Originally, city and county engineers did not expect costs of the project to exceed $1 million. However, the construction company that was awarded the bid for the project provided a cost of about $2.2 million for the improvements, Assistant City Manager Craig Shadrix said. “The price that came back was over twice what we had estimated — along with the county — so that’s created a delay,” Shadrix said. “It should have started work (sooner). We had the design work completed back during the summer. We went back to the design engineers saying, ‘Hey, can you make some design changes that might save us money?’ They did that, and the contractor we picked still can’t get the number down.” Shadrix added that one of the aspects of the project that increased construction costs is related to the high water table in the area. He said this wasn’t discovered until some initial work for the improvements began. “We did not know (about the water table) at the time because they had not done enough geotechnical work at that point, which they wouldn’t have in any normal scenario,” Shadrix said. “The water table is very high and has resulted in some design specifications, such as requiring an asphalt base, that are more expensive than other traditional

methods of paving. “When you’re looking at doing anything to a piece of land, you have to look at the soils and you have to look at where the water table is,” Shadrix later said. “In this case, the water table was determined to be very high, which requires base for the new turn lanes to be of a more expensive material — in this case, asphalt.” Because Fullers Cross Road is a city road and Ocoee Apopka Road is an Orange County road, the city and county previously entered an interlocal agreement to improve the intersection. Initially, the city and county agreed to a maximum cost for the project estimated at $1 million, with the city covering half of those costs and the county covering the other half. The intersection of Fullers Cross and Ocoee Apopka roads is notorious for the heavy traffic that occurs during peak morning and afternoon commuting hours. There’s also a number of schools near the intersection, and the traffic backs up during student drop-off and pickup hours. If all the funding for the intersection improvement project was in place, the project could take up to 18 months to complete. “What happens during peak morning and peak afternoon periods is it backs up … in all directions because you have traffic coming from Winter Garden, you have traffic coming from Apopka, (and) you have traffic coming from Ocoee,” Shadrix said. “(Also,) you don’t just have Ocoee High (nearby), you have Renaissance Charter School in that same neck of the woods and you also have Innovation Montessori that’s just literally around the corner, so when you look at the actual origin destination of trips, you have a tremendous amount of traffic coming through that intersection at peak times.”

West Learning Community. She said she has enjoyed leading WOHS and getting acquainted with the school and the community it serves. For much of the school year, students could see her standing in the courtyard before school, greeting them before their first class. She shifted recently to the front of the school so she can connect with the parents who drop off and pick up their children. She wants parents — and community members — to know she has an open-door policy and is available to meet with them if they make an appointment. “They’re meant to be informal, give them an opportunity to get to know me, ask questions or offer suggestions,” Gordon said. In the coming weeks, she is setting aside specific days to meet with anyone who wants to talk: 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 13, and Wednesday, March 25; and 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, March 16, through Wednesday, March 18. To make an appointment, call Phyllis Boston at (407) 905-2400 or email her at Phyllis. boston@ocps.net. Gordon will remain in the position for the remainder of the school year. At that time, OCPS officials will gather feedback from school staff and the community to find out what type of principal they want at West Orange. They then will advertise the position, accept applicants and conduct interviews, said Harold R. Border, chief of high schools for OCPS. Gordon said she would like the opportunity to stay at West Orange. “I love being here,” she said. “It’s such a great community and school, and I love how it’s so rich in tradition.” DEDICATED TO CHILDREN
“From a very young age, I just always knew I would be a teacher,” Gordon said. “I taught Sunday school, I baby sat, I was a lifeguard, I taught swim lessons, I was a swim coach. Every job I had
from a very young age was with kids.” She swam for Shippensburg University, in Pennsylvania, and earned her elementary education degree there. She has two degrees from the University of Central Florida: a master’s in TESOL to teach English to Spanish-speaking students and a specialist degree in education leadership. Gordon has worked at several high schools — as a teacher at Lake Nona and staffing specialist at Colonial. At Boone High, she was assistant principal of instruction and worked with graduation rate and acceleration; additionally, she was over the guidance department, master scheduling and first-year digital rollout. This isn’t her first stint as principal, either. When the principal of Blankner Elementary went on maternity leave for three months, Gordon filled in. She also was the assistant principal at Hunter’s Creek Elementary. Most recently, she was the senior administrator for the district’s high school office and was in charge of assistant principals at all 20 high schools in the OCPS district. GETTING TO KNOW GORDON
Gordon and her husband of six years enjoy riding bikes, and they sometimes can be spotted on the West Orange Trail. She is an avid reader and movie watcher, and likes trying new restaurants. She is a big fan of reality television, but she’d rather be outdoors — especially disconnecting in the mountains. Gordon said her favorite part of her job is “getting to know the students on that individual level, building those connections, learning about what they love doing and being there to support them.” She attends as many school activities as possible. “I’m getting to know the community, and that’s that partnership, and together we have so much we can accomplish, and I look forward to doing that in the future,” Gordon said.

When people walk through the doors of Ocoee’s Grain and Berry, a friendly voice welcomes patrons over whirring blenders and hissing espresso machines. The scent of fresh bananas lingers in the air. The Tampa Bay-based eatery, founded in 2017, offers a variety of superfood-rich items, including açaí bowls, fresh pressed juices and avocado toasts. And for owner Davis Suggs, a contractor, bringing the eatery to West Orange presented the perfect opportunity for a new project. Suggs runs the cafe along with his wife, Amy Sullivan, and his 16-year-old stepson, Kevin Sullivan. Suggs said he wanted to create a cozy coffeehouse atmosphere. He was sold by the healthy concept Grain and Berry offered. “I wanted to create a place in which people could come in and work on their laptops,” Suggs

The banana splits aren’t the traditional style seen in ice cream parlors. Instead of using ice cream or frozen custard, Grain and Berry takes a healthier approach and uses yogurt. WINTER GARDEN ELECTION 2020
District Seat 1: Meet the candidates Incumbent Lisa Bennett will face off against challenger Joseph Richardson for the Winter Garden District 1 seat. As the March 17 election day approaches, two candidates for the Winter Garden Commission District 1 seat hope to earn the votes of constituents. Incumbent Lisa Bennett faces challenger Joseph Richardson. Voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Tanner Hall, 29 W. Garden Ave., Winter Garden. Candidates’ answers have been edited for grammar and space. — DANIELLE HENDRIX
LISA BENNETT AGE: 56 EDUCATION: Some college OCCUPATION: Real-estate broker RELATED EXPERIENCE: City of Winter Garden Architectural Review Board; three years experience as District 1 commissioner
Why do you want to continue serving as a Winter Garden commissioner? I love our town. I believe the city has improved during my three years in office and can continue to be the cultural and commercial center of West Orange County. What makes you the most qualified candidate for the District 1 seat? I believe my opponent is running for a specific agenda — to remove prayer before commission meetings and do away with our tradition of Light Up Winter Garden. There is so much more to this job — budgets, taxes, land use, etc. To be clear, I want to preserve these important traditions. This is really a service position — not one to further an agenda — and I have many years of experience in service to our community through Winter Garden Rotary, West Orange Habitat for Humanity and our local charter school, Hope Charter, as well as serving on a city board and now three years as commissioner. If you are re-elected, what do you hope to accomplish as a commissioner? Preservation of our town’s charm and quality of life to include our traditions; promotion of safe streets, schools and neighborhoods by supporting our first responders; and I’d also like to see more city parks and recreation. Why should District 1 residents vote for you? District 1 has had three years to experience my work ethic and commitment to Winter Garden.
What are some of the challenges you believe the city of Winter Garden faces? What are some potential ways to address them? I believe transportation and road congestions are some of the biggest issues we face. Although we are building several intersection improvements currently, I believe we can do a better job with transportation. Also, affordable housing. Over the next three years, I’d like to focus on ensuring we have more affordable housing. Potential ways to address them include traffic studies, and I’d like to bring in more citizen participation in the process. On affordable housing, by ensuring that our policies and codes are written to accommodate affordable housing. What is Winter Garden already doing well that you’d like to see continue? What could the city do better? Encouraging active lifestyles through family-friendly events and traditions, promoting downtown walkability, and preservation of city parks and green spaces (such as) Tucker Ranch. (We should) continue to develop more green spaces and recreation areas. What are your thoughts on Winter Garden’s approach to managing or accommodating growth within the city? Winter Garden does a good job in balancing personal property rights while ensuring any new growth complements our existing architectural standards and quality of construction.
JOSEPH RICHARDSON AGE: 57 EDUCATION: Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science from The State University of New York OCCUPATION: Software engineer RELATED EXPERIENCE: Central Florida Freethought Community board member, active with the city for six years
Why do you want to serve as a Winter Garden commissioner? In the last six years that I’ve been actively involved with city government, I’ve realized there are some areas in which the city is lacking, and I believe I can improve them, specifically in the areas of transparency, responsiveness and inclusion. Transparency. I will seek to put the audio of the commission meetings online, along with the minutes and agenda. This information should be available by default, making it easier for the residents of Winter Garden. Responsiveness. I will hold “office hours” at regularly scheduled times — perhaps once a week — where anyone can come talk to me face to face about any problem. Any email or phone call will get a response from me. Inclusion. Our Planning and Zoning Board currently comprises 100% white males. The population of Winter Garden is only 50% white. I will seek out qualified women, Latinos and Latinas, blacks and other minorities to nominate to the board to help make sure all of Winter Garden is represented as part of our future planning and growth. What makes you the most qualified candidate for the District 1 seat? I’ve lived in Winter Garden for 14 years. I’ve been a board member of a local nonprofit for six years. I’ve been attending and participating in commission meetings and many other city meetings for six years. I’ve gained an understanding of issues facing our residents through talks with many Winter Garden citizens about real issues facing them. I’m highly passionate about making sure every resident is treated fairly, and more than anything else, because I will represent and fight for every single resident of District 1 and of Winter Garden — even the ones who don’t agree with me. If you are elected, what do you hope to accomplish as a commissioner? The biggest thing I would like to see realized is a municipal internet service. This has been looked into, but it appears to have been tabled. A municipal internet service could be central to Winter Garden’s continued growth and popularity. In the end, what I most hope to accomplish is to make Winter Garden a more transparent, responsive and inclusive city. Why should District 1 residents vote for you? I have a passion for this city, because I’ve identified areas that need work and because I have specific plans to improve them. They should also vote for me because I will make every effort to understand the issues before
tackling them. In contrast, Commissioner Lisa Bennett has shown that there are certain complaints she doesn’t understand. For example, when responding to complaints about discriminatory invocation practices, she responds that the Supreme Court has upheld invocations at municipal meetings. The complaint is not that we have them. The complaint is that they are discriminatory, which the Court said is not allowed. Finally, I am free of any potential conflicts of interest. As a software engineer working for an out-of-state company, I don’t have local customers to keep happy. What are some of the challenges you believe the city of Winter Garden faces? What are some potential ways to address them? Affordable housing has become a huge challenge. I am already looking into ways this could be addressed — for example, with tax credits to developers to build such housing. This is a complex issue, so I will seek out input from experts and affected parties to help guide my decision-making. Certainly, the planned Plant Street expansion through east Winter Garden is a big challenge. Continued communication with the residents is absolutely necessary. What is Winter Garden already doing well that you’d like to see continue? What could the city do better? Winter Garden has done a superb job managing the city’s finances. Similarly, the management of the downtown area and the general business of the city appears to be well in hand. The things the city could do better are the things that form the core of my campaign — the areas of transparency, responsiveness and inclusion. Winter Garden city government is ultimately responsible to the people, and it needs to be transparent, responsive and inclusive to the greatest extent possible. What are your thoughts on Winter Garden’s approach to managing or accommodating growth within the city? First, we need to be aware that growth will not and cannot continue indefinitely. We should be careful about giving into the pressures of growth too eagerly. Second, the growth and popularity of the area gives us the opportunity to enhance our building requirements and be more responsible about what we allow. Third, we need to be intentional about a responsible plan for protecting our green spaces and the environment. We simply need to make sure that growth and development doesn’t adversely impact the environment as well as quality of life.

WINTER GARDEN ELECTION 2020
Understand the proposed charter changes Voters in Winter Garden will head to the polls March 17 to cast their votes on nine charter amendments. When Winter Garden voters head to the polls on Tuesday, March 17, they will be asked to vote on nine charter amendments. The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. that day. Residents can find their polling location by visiting ocfelections.com/ find-my-polling-place and entering their home address. Here is a look at each charter amendment and what the changes mean for you. CHARTER AMENDMENT 1
Shall Article ll, Section 11 of the Charter be amended to provide for four-year terms of the members of the commission and mayor instead of the current three-year terms? WHAT IT MEANS: Each City Com-
mission member currently serves a three-year term. If approved, this amendment would extend the terms of city commissioners elected in 2023 and beyond to four years.
CHARTER AMENDMENT 2
Shall Article Il, Section 16 and Article lll, Section 27 of the Charter be amended to specify and provide more detailed provisions related to the hearing process for forfeiture of office against an elected official and removal of a city manager which provisions are intended to protect the due process rights of the official who is the subject of such hearings? WHAT IT MEANS: If approved, this amendment will change the processes regarding commissioners forfeiting office and removal of the city manager. For the former, the amendment would require a majority vote of the City Commission — rather than the charge of two commissioners — to initiate the procedure of removing a city commissioner from office. The amendment also would require a hearing on the forfeiture no less than 14 days after the City Commission vote, providing for testimony and evidence without formal evidentiary rules but requiring due process. For the latter, the amendment would give the city manager seven days to respond to a City
Commission resolution to remove the city manager. Removal would not be effective until after the requested hearing occurs. CHARTER AMENDMENT 3
Shall Article ll, Section 17 of the Charter be amended to extend from six to 18 months the length of unexpired term caused by a mid-term vacancy that may be filled by the commission rather than election; extend from 30 to 45 the number of days after the vacancy the commission must make such appointment; and extend from 60 to 90 days after the vacancy the time for conducting an election, when required? WHAT IT MEANS: Current policy regarding a vacancy on the City Commission requires it is filled by the City Commission if there are six months or less left in the vacated commissioner’s unexpired term; if there are more than six months remaining, a special election is required. This amendment would change the six months to 18 months. Should there be a vacancy, this extension does two things: It extends the deadline for citizens to submit their names to the city clerk for consideration of appointment to the vacant seat, and it gives the City Commission more time to fill the vacancy.
CHARTER AMENDMENT 4
Shall Article ll, Section 20 of the Charter be amended to state that City shall follow State law regarding advertising of proposed ordinances and shall Article V Section 46 of the Charter be amended to conform to the existing State law terminology of “vote-by-mail ballots” regarding elections?
WHAT IT MEANS: If approved, this amendment would conform the city’s ordinance adoption process and vote-by-mail election process with those of the state.
CHARTER AMENDMENT 5
Shall Article 11, Section 21 of the Charter be amended to provide that a commissioner may vote on emergency measures by telephonic or other audio/visual methods provided that such commissioner can hear and be heard by all in attendance at the meeting? WHAT IT MEANS: If approved, this would allow city commissioners to participate in and vote at City Commissions by phone or another audio-visual means on any emergency matters as long as the commissioner is able to hear all speakers and can be heard by both the City Commission and public throughout.
CHARTER AMENDMENT 6
Shall Article ll, Section 22 and Section 23 of the Charter be amended to delete unnecessary language and simplify existing language regarding revision and repeal of ordinances? WHAT IT MEANS: This amendment would remove redundant language regarding the City Commission’s authority to revise, compile and codify city ordinances. It also clarifies that the repeal of an ordinance doesn’t revive any ordinances that may have been repealed by that repealed ordinance.
CHARTER AMENDMENT 7
Shall Article lll, Section 28 of the Charter be amended to extend the time allowed for a city manager to establish residency within the city and allow the commission to waive the city manager residency requirement for good cause shown? WHAT IT MEANS: Currently, the city manager is required to reside within the city or establish residency within 90 days of appointment, unless extended by the City Commission for good cause. If approved, this amendment would both allow a newly appointed city manager 180 days to establish residency and allow the City Commission to waive the residency requirement for good cause.
CHARTER AMENDMENT 8
Shall Article V, Section 48 be amended to require that the election canvassing board be established by July 1 of each year instead of ninety days prior to July 1; Article V, Section 57 be amended to extend the time for filing citizen referendum petitions, and Article V, Section 58 be amended to clarify that time limits of five or fewer days in the citizen initiative or referendum process shall mean business days? WHAT IT MEANS: Currently, the city annually appoints its canvassing board 90 days prior to July 1. If approved, this amendment would give the city until July 1 to establish the canvassing board. It also would extend the time for filing citizen referendum petitions from 30 to 45 days and clarify that the time limits in the citizen referendum process for periods of five days or less are business days, not calendar days.
CHARTER AMENDMENT 9
Shall Article Vlll, Section 65 of the Charter be amended to specify that the city manager shall report any appropriation transfers to the commission within 30 days? WHAT IT MEANS: Currently, the city manager is required to report transfers of funds among programs to the City Commission in a timely manner. If approved, this amendment would require the city manager to report such transfers to the commission within 30 days.

Ocoee Middle School’s agriculture students held a ribboncutting for their land lab’s new barn, a project made possible with help from OCPS Career and Technical Education.
DANIELLE HENDRIX ASSOCIATE EDITOR
A
project that has been years in the making is now a reality for agriculture students and FFA members at Ocoee Middle School. On Wednesday, March 4, the school’s FFA members unraveled a blue satin ribbon and stood proudly in front of the barn that now stands in their land lab. They were joined by agriculture teacher and FFA adviser Karin Vorheis; Principal Samuel Davis; parents; school staff members; and Mike Armbruster, associate superintendent of Orange County Public Schools Career and Technical Education. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked a milestone for the FFA land lab and symbolized a fulfilled promise made
by educators and members of the community. Past plans for the land lab didn’t work out as envisioned. In fact, Vorheis said, former Ocoee Middle agriculture teacher Amy Anderson originally was given property off Hackney Prairie Road for the lab. “When the current school building was built, there was not an area for a land lab,” Vorheis said. “Once Prairie Lake Elementary was built, we had to take the land lab down and move it over to West Orange High School. I say we, as my sons were in FFA at the time, and we spent many hours tearing down and building back up our lab.” Eventually, space became available on Ocoee Middle’s campus and allowed plans for housing animals there to begin. Anderson worked to get things off the ground to make the land lab a reality, Vorheis said. When Vorheis came aboard
to teach agriculture in 2016, she took the baton and kept moving forward with both the barn design and surveying the land. In July, the barn was raised, and water and plumbing installed. “Currently, we are able to house our heifer, the goose, chickens and rabbits,” she said. “We are working with a local scout with his Eagle Project to install rain gutters off the barn for the garden beds, as well as some foldable tables for an outdoor classroom. We have other projects we will need to complete, including a wash rack, scale area with a concrete slab and new scale, duck water area, chicken coops and

rabbit hutches — all under our beautiful barn roof.” Each Friday, Vorheis said, students participate in “Farm Fridays” and work to keep the farm maintained and in good shape. They hope to begin their gardens soon and have been starting plants from seeds inside the classroom. OCPS Career and Technical Education was an instrumental partner in bringing the land lab’s barn to fruition, as well, having provided much of the funding to get it off the ground. Armbruster said CTE made the commitment to the barn four to five years ago, and although it took some time to get things moving, it was worth the wait. “Honestly, this is for you, the students, and that’s what it’s all about,” Armbruster said. “I believe in my heart that FFA is the premier student organization — and we’ve got some amazing organizations — but it’s the largest, it’s the oldest, and it’s the most structured and organized in such a way to

teach leadership. That’s really what FFA is all about, is leadership and learning to be strong. They happen to use agriculture as the mechanism, but what they teach you all is how to be leaders. … We’re excited to finally have the barn and to be a part of it, so CTE for OCPS is proud to be here today.” Davis said the barn installation has been on the school’s radar since former principal Dr. Mark Shanoff’s tenure. He hopes the land lab and agriculture program as a whole further enrich the middle school experience for each student in the program. “One of the things that we really strive toward — it’s our main goal here at Ocoee Middle School — is having a dynamic and positive middle school experience for every one of you guys,” Davis said. “This is the dynamic part. This is where you and other students over the years get to be involved with something that really interests them. Our hope is that it rounds our your middle school experience so you’re not just doing one thing academically, but you’ll actually excel academically because you’re able to be involved in all these other things. That’s our goal here, and I think this is a big part of that.”

LEGACY SOFTBALL TEAM SEEKS DONATIONS The Legacy Charter High School softball team currently is looking to raise money that will help the program provide the best possible experience for its players. Each season the team puts into place a budget that looks at the needs of the program — including team travel, practice equipment, uniforms and more. As of Sunday, March 8, the team had raised $3,535 — 71% of its goal of $5,000. Multiple options are available as a means of funneling donations to a specific need — field rental, new softball equipment, new uniforms, new player gear and new softballs — or a custom amount can be donated. For those interested in making a donation, visit the Legacy Charter softball team’s TeamWorks page at bit. ly/2wExI8e.
INFLUENCER OF THE WEEK
REED REYNOLDS THE FIRST ACADEMY
Reed Reynolds jumped right in his first year at The First Academy — not only joining the lacrosse team, but also quickly became a beloved and valued team member. He has passionately taken over the aquaponics program, growing interest and produce that faculty and families enjoy. He teaches freshmen world geography. Reynolds also stepped right into the lacrosse program, supporting coach David Oliver. In that role, he has bonded with the players to strengthen the team — especially during a difficult year in which Oliver fought and survived cancer.
What do you love most about your school? I love the very welcoming and friendly community, strong faith environment and the weekly chapels. TFA has been a great experience for my family and me — both spiritually and improving my worklife balance. What’s your favorite part of your role? The favorite part of my role is helping students succeed through the teaching of valuable life lessons, discipline and positive thinking in the classroom and in sports. What motivates you and pushes you to do your best? Seeing the success of my students’ hard work in the classroom and on the field over the years. Teaching them and hearing about their success after high school. It’s very satisfying to see where students start the school year in August and

their progress and improvement into May. What’s the nicest thing a student or faculty member has done for you? I don’t think there is just one thing in particular, but personal recognition of positive influence from students or faculty is always appreciated. Anytime you hear a genuine “thank you” from a student or a colleague has something positive to say about something you did — it means a lot. If you could take a vacation anywhere, where would you go? I took Latin in school, and I learned a lot about Rome and its history, so I’d like to visit Rome and different places in Italy for their food and culture. What do you like to do in your free time? I like to spend time with my wife and son, playing lacrosse, exercising in my garage gym and watching movies. I like most of Denzel Washington’s and Mark Wahlberg’s movies.
If you could meet anyone, from present day or throughout history, who would it be? I would like to meet Paul the Apostle for his major contributions to the Bible. Cats, dogs or other pets? Definitely dogs. I have always had at least one dog my whole life, and I have one dog currently that is a 4-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback. If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? I would have to go with teleportation, because it is the best superpower. Flying is cool, but teleportation is faster. Invisibility is cool, but teleportation can pretty much accomplish the same thing. Reading other people’s minds … it might sound like a cool idea, but teleportation is still better. We shouldn’t be worried about what everyone else really thinks all the time anyway. — TIM FREED

“Curtains” is a musical comedy whodunit production that West Orange theater students presented in the fall.
Double feature West Orange High School thespians will be performing a musical and one-act play at the upcoming Florida State Thespian Festival.
Furthermore, members of the West Orange band will be joining the theater students to play the music for “Curtains” live during the festival main stage performance for the first time. In addition, one of the production’s original writers will be in the audience. “Rupert Holmes, who is one of the writers of the show, … re-wrote a scene that we put in our version of the show,” Whitman said. “They are planning to
“I’m super excited,” Seithel said. “It’s always really cool, (and) it’s always really fun to work in a far larger space with a crowd that knows what you go through behind the stage and in front of the stage. It’s a really fun event.” Sophomore Aakash Dookhie has been to the state festival before and even played a role in a one-act play — called “The Diviners” — that West Orange High theater took to the festival last year. However, the upcoming performance will be the first time Dookhie will be involved in a main stage musical production at the festival. “It’s overwhelming, but also knowing what the payoff will be is so exciting,” Dookhie said.

West Orange High’s theater students are no strangers to the main stage of the Florida State Thespian Festival, and once again, they will be hitting that stage again. While most Orange County students will be on Spring Break, the West Orange High thespians will be hard at work performing productions at the upcoming State Thespian Festival from
March 18 to 21 in Tampa. The theater students will be performing their fall musical, “Curtains,” at the main stage and they will be performing their one-act play, “Lilies on the Land,” at the festival as well. West Orange is one of eight high school theater programs invited to perform at the main stage of the festival. “It’s a pretty massive deal (for us),” said program director Tara Whitman. “We’re one of eight shows featured at the festival.”
replace it with our scene, so he’s going to be there to see it at state. … (The students) are going to basically meet a celebrity who’s coming to watch them, which is really cool.” The theater department will be bringing all the costumes, props, equipment, set pieces and everything needed for the performances. Before they can take their shows on the road, they need to raise about $85,000 to cover the related expenses for the trip. The last show West Orange theater took to the main stage at the state festival was its production of “Bright Star” in 2018. Senior Justin Seithel, a master electrician who works more on the technical side of the school’s theater productions, was part of the team that worked on “Bright Star” in 2018.

In Foundation Academy baseball’s 19-1 thrashing of Jones Thursday, March 5, eighth-grader Jonathan Bosque had a big day at the plate. He went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs for the Lions. On the mound the Lions (4-2) got a combined nohitter by Aiden Earl, Gray Fitzpatrick and Parker Moss. Moss pitched two innings to pick up the win.

The West Orange boys lacrosse team dominated in its 18-0 victory over Ocoee Thursday, March 5. The Warriors (8-0) were led by sophomore Justin Burbano, who scored a game-high four goals. Freshman Dawson Johns would add on two goals and four assists, while senior Logan Odier tacked on three goals.

In a top matchup between Olympia and Windermere on the baseball diamond, the Titans (5-1) walked away with a 6-2 win Wednesday, March 4, thanks in large part to a strong pitching performance from Mitchell Harding — who gave up only two runs during 5 1/3 innings pitched with five strikeouts. At the plate, the Titans saw five different players score an RBI apiece.

The Olympia girls tennis team (9-1) took care of business against Dr. Phillips Wednesday, March 4, with a 6-1 victory over the Panthers. The Titans were led by Aubrey Barnes, who at No. 1 singles defeated Juliana Gomes 8-1. The Panthers lone win came when Nicole Cardenas — No. 2 singles — defeated Lizzie Connor 8-2.

In the Dr. Phillips softball team’s dominant 16-1 mercy-ruled win over Poinciana Tuesday, March 3, the Panthers (5-4) saw big bats from Aliyah Headen, Riley Jackson and Alyssa Hans. Headen finished the day scoring three runs and went 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Jackson went 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Hans added on one run herself, and went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

After a wild fourth round, Tyrrell Hatton walked away from the Arnold Palmer Invitational with his first PGA Tour win. TROY HERRING SPORTS EDITOR
I
n the throes of a big moment, finding the right words can be difficult. As the cheering from the packed grandstand on the 18th hole grew louder, all Tyrrell Hatton could do was let out a sigh of relief before combing his hand through his hair and uttering out softly, “Oh my God, I can’t believe it.” With those words, the 28-yearold Englishman found himself coming to grips with what he had just accomplished. At 4-underpar, Hatton came out on top at the Arnold Palmer Invitational — his first win on the PGA Tour. “It’s an incredible feeling to win
on the PGA Tour and to do it at such an iconic venue,” Hatton said. “I’ve grown up watching this event as a kid on TV, and to be sitting here next to the trophy now is an amazing feeling, and (I’m) very thankful I managed to hold on at the end.” Going into the fourth and final round Sunday, March 8, at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Hatton — a four-time European Tour winner — held a two-stroke lead over Rory McIlroy and Marc Leishman and was looking for another strong outing. That was easier said than done. From the beginning of that round, Hatton struggled as his tee shot on the first hole landed in a bunker — ultimately leading him to a bogey to start his day at 1-over.
Hatton recovered as he hit for par on the next three holes, but once again, he found himself in trouble with another bogey on the par-4 fifth hole. Just as he did earlier, Hatton recovered, following the bogey by hitting on-par at six before notching back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth holes to retake sole possession of first place. A few holes later, on the par4 11th, Hatton took on his biggest challenge of the day. Hatton has amusingly admitted to being a “head case” sometimes, and that showed when his ball found its watery demise right off the tee — an ill-fated sign that ultimately resulted in Hatton finishing with a double-bogey. The dreadful result saw Hatton slam his club into the ground before using his putter as a rifle — “firing” a few shots at the pond. He then threw a colorful gesture in the direction of the body of water that swallowed his ball. “I was just annoyed because my third shot in was actually one of the best swings I made all day,” Hatton said. “We had the run out on the TV tower, which was my line, we had 193, and I’ve hit a 5-iron at my target and the wind just completely dropped. So that kind of went against us on that hole, and I was just having a little moan, like it’s the grass’ fault and the wind’s fault. It’s never my fault.” SEE API PAGE 18

CORRECTING FOR THE COURSE
As a four-year member of the Central Florida Christian Academy varsity baseball team, Keenan Milroy has played a number of roles since he joined the team in eighth grade. Now, in his junior year, Milroy is one of head coach Larry Oldham’s vital leaders.
When did you first get into baseball? I first started probably in eighth grade, and my brothers had been playing at the school for quite some time, and I just got into the age where I could kind of play. I had been playing football, and I hadn’t really played baseball because they didn’t have a JV team. The team was really good, so I couldn’t really just hop on the team. What was that like for you being on the varsity team as an eighth-grader? It was a very big learning experience because I’ve been the youngest, so I have been kind of watching everybody else for everything. I’ve been learning from other people doing it before me. It wasn’t like a big surprise that I wasn’t going to be doing a whole lot. What would you say is the hardest part about playing baseball? Obviously, the hardest thing is hand-eye coordination, because if you don’t have hand-eye coordination, you can’t hit the ball or catch the ball, and that’s the biggest parts of baseball. And then throwing accuracy — you have to be very accurate when you’re throwing. If you can get that stuff down, you’ll be a pretty good athlete. What’s your favorite part about the sport? My favorite part about baseball is either hitting or pitching — I really enjoy both things. Pitching is a lot fun because you get to throw the ball as hard as you can into a small area, and then with hitting, if you get a hold of it, it’ll fly out there and you get to just watch it sail through the air.
Hatton wasn’t alone when it came to struggles — and anger — relating to the U.S. Open-like weather and difficulty of the course. After two calm rounds to start the tournament, Saturday and Sunday saw significant weather changes. The temperature dropped into the 60s, and a forceful wind made even the simplest shots difficult. THE BASICS
SCHOOL: CFCA GRADE: Junior AGE: 17 SPORT: Baseball POSITION: Catcher, Pitcher, Infield
What’s your favorite thing about playing at CFCA? I’ve just always loved the environment. It’s awesome being surrounded by a whole bunch of Christian coaches and Christian athletes. It’s nice to be around other people who are likeminded. The coaches have always been so kind and helpful, and they are always there for you. They are there for more than just making you a good athlete; they’re there to make you a better man. Is there a highlight moment for you during your playing time at CFCA? Most of the kids (who) came out when I started — and since then — haven’t played much, and it’s always just been an awesome experience to go from a team that struggled in practice and was mercy-ruled early in the season by one team, and later on in the season we beat that team. It’s just a cool experience going through a season where we have improved so much and grown as a team. What is your ideal meal after a game? I would probably go to Chipotle — it’s a meal that’s very nutritional, healthy, and it’s all cooked there. It’s all stuff that is going to be helpful for building back my body from a long game. I generally get a bowl — half chicken, half steak. What do you like to do in your spare time? I do a little bit of photography — in my free time I’ll edit some pictures and things like that.

Rowers make waves at OARS regatta R owing teams packed into Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake Saturday, March 7, and Sunday, March 8, for the annual OARS Invitational Regatta hosted by the Windermere-based Orlando Area Rowing Society. More than 1,000 rowers from crew organizations around the state of Florida — as well as neighboring states — competed on a 1500-meter course in the middle of Turkey Lake. Races, which were supposed to take place every seven minutes, were sometimes delayed because of a heavy breeze that swept through during the weekend. Despite the difficult weather, rowers still got the chance to showcase their skills.
Sarasota Crew members got into place before their race on Turkey Lake.

THROWBACK THURSDAY March 2, 1967 Remember seeing “Batman” for the first time on the big screen and in color? The Star-Lite Drive-In movie theater — once located on East Plant Street in Winter Garden and a popular spot for students, families and couples — was one of the local theaters showing it on the outdoor screen. The theater regularly advertised its weekend and weekday movies in “The Winter Garden Times.” On the first weekend of March 1967, folks could check out flicks featuring Michael Caine, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, Adam West, Burt Ward and others.

FROM THE ARCHIVES Robert Luther Tilden visited the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation last week with his wife, Martha Byrd Tilden, and shared photographs depicting early generations of Oakland’s pioneer Tilden family from a century ago. This photograph shows Luther Willis Tilden; his wife, Virginia May Wise Tilden; and five of their children, Gladys, Clarence, Grace, Harold and Doris. The house they are posing in front of is Meadow Marsh, constructed around 1905. Greatly enlarged over the following years to accommodate the growing family — the Tildens eventually raised nine children — the house still stands on Tildenville School Road, in Winter Garden.
The mission of the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation is to preserve the heritage and architecture of Winter Garden while creating new cultural experiences. The Foundation also preserves the material culture of West Orange County, using it to educate the area’s youth on the community’s rich history.

According to Jimmy Pitchford, Membership Committee chairman, this month must be realized in membership dues if the chamber is to stay in business and provide the services so essential to the merchants and the Winter Garden-West Orange community. Tapped for membership in the Lakeview High chapter of the National Honor Society were Jacque Dennis, Larry Elrod, Jolyn Haley, Deborah Holmes, Karen Lofton, Gwen Brown, Neal Carris, Ann Duppenthaler, Cindy Hodge, Janet McMillan, Sallie Youngblood, Todd Engstrom and Clyde Hicks.
