KRONOS QUARTET SEPTEMBER 17th at 7pm San Francisco’s Kronos Quartet delights audiences with artful experimentation, mixing familiar arrangements with the element of surprise. It’s this ever-changing attitude toward music that prompted The New York Times to write, “Part of the kick of a Kronos Quartet concert is that you never know quite what you’re going to get.” The ensemble’s artistic vision combines a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to continually reimagine the string quartet experience — and, in the process, Kronos has become one of the most celebrated and influential groups of our time, performing thousands of concerts worldwide and collaborating with many of the world’s most accomplished composers and performers.

Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens is a folk music legend. From her internationally acclaimed work with the band Carolina Chocolate Drops to her award-winning solo material, Rhiannon is just as well-known on the global music scene as she is beloved in her home state of North Carolina. A vocalist, violinist and banjo player, Rhiannon recently teamed up with Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi, blending Rhiannon’s old-time Americana with folk music from around the world. Together, their music explores the connectedness of global cultures, illustrating music’s migration from Africa and the Middle East to Europe and the Americas.

The five voices of Nobuntu echo with power and intensity, emanating pure joy while embodying the spirit of the artists’ Zimbabwe home. An all-female a cappella vocal quintet, Nobuntu translates to “mother of kindness” or “mother of humanity” in celebration of the African philosophy ubuntu, which values humanity’s compassion and connectedness. Drawing international acclaim for its inventive worldwide performances, the ensemble’s concerts range from traditional Zimbabwean songs to Afro-jazz to gospel and are accompanied by minimalistic percussion, traditional instruments and organic, authentic dance movements. Recently nominated for Best Musician of the Year at the Zimbabwe International Women Awards, the women of Nobuntu believe that music is an important vehicle for change. CANADIAN BRASS NOVEMBER 15th at 8pm One of the most popular brass ensembles today, Canadian Brass has an international reputation for greatness, earned throughout a near-50-year career of thrilling audiences around the world. Now veterans of the music scene, Canadian Brass has developed a uniquely engaging stage presence and rapport with audiences, with repertoire that ranges from trademark Baroque and Dixieland tunes to new compositions and arrangements created especially for them — including formal, classical presentations to music served up with lively dialogue and theatrical effects. The hallmark of any Canadian Brass performance is entertainment, spontaneity, virtuosity and, most of all, fun. But whatever the style, the music is performed with utmost dedication, skill and excellence.

NOVEMBER 20th at 8pm Chart-topping jazz and blues artist Shoshana Bean is a powerhouse on stage — both in concert and underneath the Broadway spotlight. Having made her debut in the original cast of Hairspray, Shoshana has since become a Broadway icon, winning awards and praise for both her theatrical roles (from Wicked to Waitress) and for her solo work in music. Inspired largely by Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand, the actress and dynamo singer thrills with a fresh new take on the big band tradition in her current show, Spectrum: Soulful Standards. Greek gods abound in Homer’s epic The Odyssey, a poem so ancient it predates Shakespeare’s works by more than two millennia. Ten years after the fall of Troy, Greek hero Odysseus has yet to return home to his wife and son. After battling sea monsters and cyclopes and other life-threatening obstacles, Odysseus finds himself imprisoned on the island Ogygia, held captive by the beautiful nymph Calypso. With some help from the gods, Odysseus might just escape. When it comes to classical Greek dramas, “there are few [theatre companies] that can mount productions with the iconoclastic and high-voltage energy of Aquila Theatre Company and win praise from critics and scholars alike,” writes The New York Times.

THE DRUMMERS OF JAPAN Described as “the pulse of the gods” by Hanover, Germany’s Neue Presse, YAMATO The Drummers of Japan erupt with a thunderous energy in their newest program, Jhonetsu, meaning “passion.” An Asheville fan favorite from seasons past, Yamato’s drummers modernize a centuries-old Taiko tradition to create a thrilling, high-energy ride full of heart-thumping rhythms and explosive beats. Yamato is internationally recognized for its exhilarating performances — described as “pure energy meets spiritual high,” by Edinburgh’s The Scotsman. Strength, spirit and sheer endurance shine through in Yamato’s drummers, whose passion for performance is both joyous and entertaining. DRE AMERS’ CIRCUS FEBRUARY 28th at 8pm Dreamers’ Circus was born in a spontaneous, late-night jam session — when three strangers met by chance at a bar in Copenhagen and stumbled upon musical chemistry. Minutes after pianist Nikolaj Busk joined cittern player Ale Carr and fiddle player Rune Tonsgaard Sorensen for a traditional tune, a magic, melodic electricity filled the air. Just a decade later, the trio has earned international renown, traveling from their native Scandinavia to perform throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. Transcending genres and evoking vivid and colorful imagery, Dreamers’ Circus blends traditional folk with sounds from around the world, taking audiences to a magical and wondrous place with each song.

MARCH 5th at 8pm Fearless front-woman Derina Harvey packs a punch with her vivacious voice, her lyrics swirling in a tempestuous sea of high-energy Celtic-rock. Backed by a rocky, rhythmic undertow, layered with guitars and fiddle, Derina’s powerful vocals roll through her songs in waves — crashing upon the shores of today’s Celtic music and putting a fresh, new spin on traditional folk songs. Often compared to a more rugged version of Great Big Sea — if that band was led by Adele — Derina Harvey Band has earned a reputation for both its remarkable, modern-day sea shanties and its people-pleasing performances, winning the People’s Choice Award at the 2018 Edmonton Music Awards.

RONDELL SHERIDAN MARCH 6th at 8pm In his new show, If You’re Over 40 and You Know It, Clap Your Hands!, comedian Rondell Sheridan brings nonstop hilarity to the stage in a celebration of life, love and laughter. In 1982, at a small club in the West Village, Rondell first walked on stage — and, six months later, he was a regular on the scene, honing his comedy to become a storytelling master. Throughout his career, Rondell has appeared on the Tonight Show (with Johnny Carson and Jay Leno), Late Night with Conan O’Brien, the Late, Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Comics Unleashed, Showtime and Comedy Central, and he’s had recurring roles on NBC’s Minor Adjustments, Disney’s That’s So Raven and Nickelodeon. Cuban-American dancer and choreographer Rosie Herrera is changing the rules of dance. A beloved fixture on the Miami contemporary arts scene, the Rosie Herrera Dance Company creates work that ranges from ballet to theatre, opera to drag and performance art — and each performance is met with a whirlwind of praise. Known for its diverse ensembles that consist of some of Miami’s most brilliant performers and creators, the company and its works have been praised by dance critic Deborah Jowitt as “earthy, poetic and beyond dada imaginative.”

MARCH 24th & 25th at 8pm Pilobolus is back with an all-new adventure, combining its visually striking shadow-play with choreography and multimedia for an evening of wild and fascinating storytelling. In 2018, Pilobolus sold out its two Asheville performances of Shadowland, and, this season, the narrative continues in Shadowland: The New Adventure. Founded at Dartmouth College in 1971, Pilobolus has left a global legacy of movement and magic, appearing on television, in movies and advertisements and performing for more than one million fans in 32 countries. Employing animation, video and shadowy theatrics, Shadowland: The New Adventure is a madcap adventure — part-love story and part-quixotic quest to save an imaginary bird — that dips its toe into science fiction, film noir and romantic comedy.

THE KINGDOM CHOIR At the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, British gospel group The Kingdom Choir sang a moving rendition of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me,” their voices ringing through Windsor Castle and captivating all 1,900 guests in attendance, plus an estimated 3 billion viewers around the globe. Led by Karen Gibson, one of the U.K.’s most respected gospel tutors and choir conductors, the London-based choir is a tight-knit community of talented vocalists dedicated to harnessing the raw power of the human voice. DANCE THE ATRE OF HARLEM
50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR MAY 5th & 6th at 8pm Born in 1968 at the height of the civil rights movement, the Dance Theatre of Harlem conveys a message of empowerment for all through the arts. Its founders, Karel Shook and Arthur Mitchell — the latter of whom made history in 1955 as the first black principal dancer in New York City Ballet, believe that the most impactful art is born in moments of extreme injustice and frustration. Now a singular presence in the ballet world, the 17-member, multi-ethnic company celebrates half a century of dance, performing forward-thinking, impassioned repertoire that celebrates African American culture through the language of ballet. Through moving performances, community engagement and arts education, the Dance Theatre of Harlem presents a powerful vision for ballet in the 21st century.

The Wortham Center for the Performing Arts is conveniently located in the center of downtown Asheville, just three blocks from I-240, exit 5A Merrimon Avenue. Use Uber and Lyft for easy drop-off and pick-up. Parking is available in the privately operated parking deck next to the theatre and at other nearby lots, or on the street with free metered parking after 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and all day Sunday.
