Sat, Sep 27 • 7 pm Diana Wortham Theatre With their concert entitled PEACE the multi-Grammy and Emmy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir returns to North America to perform a joyful program of South African freedom songs, traditional spirituals and timeless classics. This uplifting concert also features spirited renditions of music by Aretha Franklin, Harry Belafonte, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Leonard Cohen, and more. Formed in 2002 to celebrate the unique power of African gospel music, the Choir quickly established itself as a group that is “undeniably synchronized, appears unshakable, and simultaneously expresses universality and individuality” (San Francisco Classical Voice). Heralded by Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey, Soweto Gospel Choir excites audiences worldwide with earthy rhythms, rich harmonies, brilliant costumes and an infectious spirit—perfect for the entire family. The Choir’s career achievements are phenomenal. They have collaborated with Peter Gabriel, U2, John Legend, Robert Plant, Chance the Rapper, and Ben Harper, and have shared the stage with Celine Dion, Diana Ross, Andre Rieu, Bono, Pharrell Williams, and more. Festival appearances include Edinburgh, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Hong Kong, London, WOMADelaide and the Montreal Jazz Festival. Soweto Gospel Choir has performed in prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Royal Festival Hall in London and the Nelson Mandela Theatre. In this visually stunning adventure fit for all ages, a famous scientist with magic powers brings a friendly dinosaur to life. When the dinosaur wanders away from home, he discovers a wonderful world full of creatures that light up the darkness and help him find the true meaning of love.
Praised for its cutting-edge blend of puppetry, technology, and dance, Lightwire Theater evokes childlike wonder and whimsy through tender-hearted stories that light up the darkness in every sense. Dino-Light, an original storyline (initially under the name Darwin the Dinosaur), was the recipient of the prestigious Jim “absolutely Henson Foundation Grant and is the first feature-length theatrical production created incredible” and performed by creators Ian Carney and Corbin Popp. — Rolling The process of building Lightwire Theater’s electroluminescent characters starts with the Stone creators and the cast. They build everything themselves from the ground up, with each sculpture taking nearly 200 hours of intensive labor. The foundation begins with a base that includes triggers and armatures. They utilize recyclable materials including aluminum rods, election signs, skateboard wheels, dryer ducts, plumbing supplies, PVC pipes, fishing poles, duct tape, zip ties, and backpacks to help define peaks and angles. These common household items help create durable and pliable sculptures that can withstand the movement of the dancers and multiple performances. Black fabric is added to the sculpture for dimension and then lined with electroluminescent wire known as “EL wire,” which is soldered everywhere the wire is connected. Unlike black lights, EL wire can be powered by batteries, requires no theatrical lighting, and gives 360-degrees of glowing light. Once the character is “turned on,” it can use up to 16 AA or rechargeable batteries per performance. The result is more than anything your inner-child can dream of, including 16-foot tall birds, dinosaurs, ducks, soldiers, swords, and more.

In 2021, Josh Blue appeared on NBC’s America’s Got Talent where he earned third place. Simon Cowell noted, “There is this buzz before you come on and I’m always thinking, what are you going to say, what are you going to do...and I love that. I adore you.” Following this win, he hit the road with his As NOT Seen on TV Tour. Josh does over 200 shows a year, continuing to spread laughter and break down stereotypes of people with disabilities. His stand-up routine is in a constant state of evolution, and his off-the-cuff improvisational skills guarantee that no two shows are alike. Josh represented the United States in eight countries as a member of the US Paralympic Soccer Team. Josh and his team were thoroughly disgraced in the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece by not scoring a single goal. He is a single father living in Denver, CO with his son and daughter.

A breast cancer survivor, she also shares Asian American stories on her family’s YouTube channel Old Korean Dad Stories. Sid Davis delivers big laughs with relatable humor and a distinctive style shaped by life as a dad and husband. Nearing 50, he broke into comedy, quickly earning accolades including “Best in Fest” for three years at the San Luis Obispo Comedy Festival. Discovered by Joan Rivers as her opening act, he later released a hit Dry Bar Comedy special with millions of views. Michael Palascak is a likable comedian whose sharp, personal material has earned him appearances on The Late Late Show with James Corden and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in the same year. His credits also in clude The Tonight Show, Conan, Letterman, A Little Late with Lilly Singh, and Comedy Central’s The Half Hour. Truly a circus experience like no other, this production by company founder Yamoussa Bangoura vibrates with all the strength, agility and energy of daily life in Guinea, Bangoura’s native home and greatest inspiration. Bangoura first became interested in the circus arts in the 1990s as a young man growing up in Conakry, the capital city of Guinea, a coastal country in West Africa. On Sundays, his district’s only television station would broadcast European circus performances, and everyone would gather in front of the TV, captivated by the performers’ prowess. Once the transmission was over, Bangoura and many others would venture to the beach to replicate the performers’ acrobatic movements in the soft sand — practicing what they’d just seen on TV while learning traditional techniques from more experienced artists and teachers. A standout student of acrobatics, Bangoura began studying the Nyamakala tradition of circus, practiced by the Fula people of West Africa. He eventually joined Guinea’s original circus company, Circus Baobob, with whom he toured Africa and Europe. In the early 2000s, Bangoura was recruited to Cirque Eloize, a Montreal-based Canadian cirque company. While in Canada, he also performed with Cirque du Soleil and Cavalia (a cirque with horses). In 2007, Bangoura realized his dream and opened his own company, Kalabanté Productions, in Montreal. He recruited many of his extended family members to join the company, including his twin sisters, brothers and cousins. The company first began touring in Quebec, then expanded across Canada, the U.S. and, eventually, the world. In 2018, Kalabanté opened its own studio and school in Montreal, offering classes in African dance, cirque and drumming. The performers of Kalabanté Productions are proud to be able to share their work, achievements and skills with the global community, both to inspire others and to assist with the humanitarian mission to help the Guinean community from which Bangoura and many of his company members come.

Experience a dynamic mix of new and returning artists, bringing you a festive variety of Celtic, American roots, and world-influenced music. This winter, join a heartwarming tribute to Appalachian culture, filled with holiday cheer. Zoe & Cloyd is a local sensation and husband-and-wife duo, comprised of renowned fiddler and vocalist Natalya Zoe Weinstein and award-winning songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist John Cloyd Miller. Their soaring harmonies, heartfelt songwriting, and rousing instrumentals seamlessly combine original bluegrass, klezmer, and folk music. Grammy nominee Josh Goforth has been playing music and performing for nearly his entire life. As the great-great-great-grandson of Madison County fiddler Asbury McDevitt, music is in his DNA. EJ Jones has been performing traditional Highland bagpipe and folk music since he first picked up the pipes in 1987. As The Piper Jones Band, he and bouzouki player Frances Cunningham bring authentic, traditional tunes from Ireland, Scotland, and Appalachia to the stage. Professional storyteller Becky Stone joined the lineup in 2022, amazing audiences with her inspiring tales and conjuring vivid imagery through spoken word. She returns this season with stories to uplift and inspire. Also returning is the A.C. Reynolds Chorale under the direction of Phillip Haynie—a year-round, auditiononly honors class and ensemble that focuses on music literacy and literature at the proficient and advanced levels as identified by the state. John Doyle & Mick McAuley, longtime members of the acclaimed Irish American band Solas, have performed together internationally for over 20 years. Known for Doyle’s powerhouse guitar and McAuley’s virtuosic instrumentation, the duo blends explosive tunes with heartfelt ballads. Their collaborations with artists like Joan Baez, Sting, and Mary Chapin Carpenter further showcase their standing as one of folk music’s most dynamic duets. Elizabeth McCorvey is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter making her A Swannanoa Solstice debut. A dynamic performer and recent finalist in both the NC Folk Festival and Earl Scruggs banjo competitions, she blends original roots music with vibrant energy and heart.

Solas is lighting up stages across the globe as they celebrate three decades of pushing boundaries and honoring traditions in Irish music. Since forming in New York City in 1995, the band has captivated audiences with a sound that fuses traditional Irish tunes with folk, bluegrass, Americana, and contemporary songwriting.

Their debut album Solas (1996) introduced a bold new voice in traditional music. Since then, the band has released 12 critically acclaimed albums and built a reputation for emotionally charged, dynamic live performances. Founded in 1974 as the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, Ailey II has advanced Alvin Ailey’s vision by giving early-career dancers the vital experience of transitioning from training as a student to becoming a professional dancer. Emmy Award-winner Jane Lynch and the hilariously charming Kate Flannery join up for a raucous night of comedy, song, and unapologetic mischief in The Trouble with Angels. The New York-based singer-songwriter and pianist recently sold out Dizzy’s Club in her Jazz at Lincoln Center bandleader debut. Her sixth and most recent album, How Love Begins, won the Grammy for “Best Jazz Vocal Album.” Co-produced with eighttime Grammy-winner Christian McBride, the record features all original music. Nicole is the only artist ever to have won this award having written and arranged the entire album herself. An ardent environmentalist, her album release coincided with a self-produced fundraiser for “Save the Sound” at Park City Music Hall in Bridgeport, CT. Winner of the 2021 American Traditions Vocal Competition Gold Medal, Nicole has become a staple on the New York jazz scene, headlining venues such as Birdland, Blue Note, and Dizzy’s. As a touring artist, she’s made a mark on the global modern jazz landscape, appearing as a featured soloist with the Savannah Philharmonic, Asheville Symphony, and other notable pops orchestras. She has also performed with artists including Morgan James and Darren Criss. Married to renowned drummer and bandleader Dan Pugach, Nicole is a featured artist and producer on his 2025 Grammy-winning album Bianca Reimagined: Music for Paws and Persistence (Best Large Ensemble), which includes their Grammy-nominated song “Little Fears” (Best Jazz Performance). McCutcheon—Grammy-nominated master instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, storyteller, activist, and author—is folk music’s true Renaissance man. Wherever he performs, his legendary charm resonates with audiences of every generation.

He’s punched the clock in the international folk music world for over half a century. He’s been a respected archivist of Appalachian music. He was in the forefront of popularizing the hammer dulcimer and is considered a world master on the instrument. He helped revolutionize children’s and family music with five consecutive Grammy-nominated albums. He co-founded and led the fastest-growing Local in the Musicians Union. His songwriting is hailed around the globe and his instruction books introduced thousands to the joys of their own music making. He recorded and released tribute albums to Woody Guthrie, labor musician Joe Hill, and his friend and mentor, Pete Seeger. He even starred in a one-man musical, Joe Hill’s Last Will, which toured nationally and internationally. And he has consistently been one of the most popular touring musicians in the folk world. Yes, by any normal standard, he could proudly hang up the banjo and retire. But John McCutcheon is just getting started. In January 2025, he released Field of Stars, his 45th album in his 52-year career, saying, “I feel as though I’m finally getting the hang of doing my job well.”

One of Scotland’s most innovative musical exports, this skilled contemporary folk act fuses Highland and Island traditions into a fresh, distinctive sound rooted in heritage. Their multi-award-winning performances match “fiery intensity with exquisite finesse” and are “as polished as [they are] passionate” (The Scotsman).
Securely ranked among Scotland’s most skilled and imaginative contemporary folk acts, Breabach unites Highland and Island traditions with contemporary folk, infusing the old with the new to create a sound that’s fresh and distinctive, yet stays true to its heritage. Breabach, whose name means “kicking” in Gaelic, formed in 2005 around the desire to create a distinctive sound, centered around two bagpipers and a fiddle, supported by a stand-up bass and acoustic guitar. With a repertoire that spans everything from reels and airs to pibrochs and songs, Breabach possesses the innate ability to energize any crowd. To date, the five-member group has released seven increasingly acclaimed albums, all while fueling their creative appetites in collaborations with BAFTA award-winning animator Cat Bruce on short film Dùsgadh, indigenous Australasian artists Moana & The Tribe, Quebec’s Le Vent du Nord, video game composer Big Giant Circles, and as artists-in-residence at the 2019 Celtic Colours festival with Cape Bretoners, Beòlach. The band’s latest album, Fàs — a Gaelic word meaning growth — is heavily inspired by the natural environment of Scotland and sees the band showcase more progressive elements in their music than ever before. Produced by esteemed musician Inge Thomson, engineered and mixed by Iain Hutchison at GloWorm Recording Studios in Glasgow and mastered by Peter Beckmann, the record also features collaborations with analogue synth player Keir Long and Gaelic lyricist and musician Ewen Henderson. The protection, conservation and regeneration of the natural world influenced every part of the album making process, from song composition and sourcing material to the recording process and album production. This nationally televised event was organized as a tribute to President Barack Obama and his family. The group has worked with various artists including Adam Blackstone, Kierra Sheard, Yolanda Adams, and former member of Destiny’s Child, Michelle Williams. Stony the Road is a newly arranged musical suite inspired by James Weldon Johnson’s iconic poem, Lift Every Voice and Sing. Each movement explores a different segment of the text, highlighting its themes and emotional depth. Composer Reginald Golden blends jazz, blues, gospel, folk, and spirituals to create a powerful, cohesive journey through the African American musical tradition. This work honors both the struggle and resilience of the Black experience while celebrating the beauty and richness of its cultural legacy. Since 2011, Reginald A. Golden has served as Musical Director of the Howard Gospel Choir, upholding its legacy of musical excellence and creative artistry. A Cleveland native, Golden began performing in choirs and ensembles at a young age and now also directs the Youth & Young Adult Department of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses. A double alumnus of Howard University, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (2013) and a Master of Music in Music Education (2019). While at Howard, he performed with the award-winning Afro Blue vocal jazz ensemble and served as Student Conductor of the Howard University Choir. Golden has toured extensively across the U.S., Asia, Europe, and the Americas. His career includes directing, arranging, and leading workshops, as well as collaborations with Marvin Hamlisch, Geri Allen, Gary Hines, and Italian pop star Zucchero Fornaciari.

Stewart/Owen Dance is an award-winning contemporary dance company known for dynamic performances and rigorous physicality. Founded in Richmond, VA, in 2012 by Gavin Stewart and Vanessa Owen, dancers and choreographers with international touring credits, the company began as a choreographic experiment and has grown into a nationally recognized creative force. After fifteen U.S. State Department tours teaching and performing with Company E, the founders settled in North Carolina in 2017, soon recruiting talented artists to realize their creative vision. As a resident company at the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts, Stewart/Owen Dance offers accessible community dance education while creating original repertory that examines form and craft. Their partnership with the Wortham began in 2020 with a sold-out drive-up performance, followed by two more COVID-conscious works. This season marks their third appearance on the Wortham Presents series. Stewart/Owen’s choreography is fiercely present, sharply musical, and at once raw and refined, moving fluidly from stages to screens, and into unexpected spaces. In 2024, they premiered The Front, an electrically charged satire commissioned by the American Dance Festival with support from The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation. Collaborations include projects with Moses Sumney and Sylvan Esso. Beyond performance, Stewart/Owen Dance works to increase access to dance in Western North Carolina and the Southeast through training, public engagement, and seasonal intensives like DELVE. In January 2025, they piloted a pre-professional intensive with the UNCSA School of Dance, supported by the Thomas S. Kenan Foundation for the Arts. With movement that dares and leadership that listens, Stewart/Owen Dance invites audiences into work that imagines a future where dance is essential, accessible, and alive wherever it takes root.
