We were just glad to help. If you have a club or charity and would like us to feature you then please get in touch. It does seem that more and more of us have resigned ourselves to sitting in front of the television and are living our lives watching somebody elses fictional world go by. They say the Countyfile is still one of the most popular programmes on TV but how many of us actually put on a pair of walking boots and get out there. I’m as guilty as the rest of us. We are living our lives in a virtual world. We have reached the point where we are watching other people watching the TV, I refer to Gogglebox, and our kids glued to Facebook watching their friends make up a false lifestyles to envy. There are many charities and organisations in Taunton who are desperate for volunteers and a wide range of clubs looking for new members. So maybe we should take stock of where and what we are doing, and re-address some balance and get involved in our own lives. On a different note I would like to thank Nick Chipchase who has kindly sent us some old pictures of Taunton together with his knowledge of some of the things that appear in them. Well I’m off to enjoy the Spring, where’s my boots?

Town centre developments I can hardly believe that we are into the spring edition of Word Gets Around Magazine already and that it`s now a year since I was invited to write about what the council is seeking to achieve to support businesses. We started off 2017 having discussions with businesses and organisations about how the urban environment in the town centre works. This work was labelled in the media as pedestrianisation but it is about a wider look at the town centre and how we can improve the flow of people through it. The project included an exhibition in the library and we are now absorbing the contents of the discussion into the plan for a trial later in the year. This will see restrictions put into place for traffic in key streets which will, if successful, potentially combine with other improvements to the town centre in future. As you will be aware Taunton has been awarded Garden Town status. The town centre trial will become an element of that work. The award of this status, apart from giving Taunton a higher profile nationally, will enable us to access additional funding to deliver improvements linked to the wider building plans in the town. We believe this will aid the delivery of sustainable infrastructure development across the town. The town centre landscape is changing with new businesses setting up and others moving on. The retail and leisure offer seems to be moving at some pace now and looking around we seem to have a number of new operators in the town. In the past few months the market in offices has been moving strongly. There will be significant demolition work

soon to replace Quantock House on Paul Street with a new modern building. As I walk around town I have spotted many buildings with scaffolding around them or building work being carried out inside. This is generally a signal that landlords are improving their buildings, which has to be an encouraging confidence boost for investment in the Town. To complement this building work we have recently been working with digital businesses to evaluate how we can help them in taking Taunton forwards. This work will see further activity over the year as we develop clear actions to improve the general environment for this type of business. The need for a skilled digital workforce has come through loud and clear. This may seem obvious but we are suffering a serious shortage of people who can deliver on the many roles that already exist in Taunton. We aim to try to address this and I will share more as we identify how we plan to do this. We are currently running some workshops in partnership with Cosmic so if you are a business which is trying to enhance your skills watch out for these in the next few months. Get your Skin Glowing for Spring I don’t know about you, but I spend most of winter looking forward to spring. The start of lighter evenings and warmer temperatures all appeal to me far more than central heating, woolly sweaters and warm boots. The only problem can be remembering to start prepping skin that’s been hidden away for so many months in time for clear, glowing and bright skin when you finally take off all those layers. The skin on your face and body gets thoroughly abused by cold, wet and windy weather in winter, as well as heating in your home, and constantly going from cold to warm environments. This is a good time to re-visit the products you are using at home and target dry, flaky or itchy skin so that it is back in tip top condition as we move into spring. Look after your skin - it’s the largest organ of your body and often the most neglected, yet with some easy steps and a little tlc you will have that all important healthy glow in no time. I always start with a ‘double cleanse’: this consists of washing your face twice in the morning and twice in the evening. Why do I recommend this? The first cleanse will remove make-up, SPF, oils, sweat and impurities whilst the second cleanse will get into the pores and clean your skin. I also begin a targeted regime of exfoliation and moisturisation in spring so my face is repaired, hydrated and looking fantastic by summer. The added bonus is that make-up goes on much better, and lasts far longer on exfoliated skin, so you’ll be doing yourself a favour now too. Finally, make sure you are using an SPF30 or higher every day, as the sun’s harmful UVA ray that ages our skin is as strong on a winter’s day as it is in summer. It’s a habit you need to form 6.
to look after your skin now and help minimise wrinkles and brown spots appearing later in life! Don’t forget the rest of your body! How many of us stop our skincare routine at our neckline, yet the décolleté is a problem area for so many of us. Take your facial products down onto the chest and then invest some time into looking after your body too. I’m a big fan of dry body brushing as it has multiple benefits. It will stimulate the body’s lymphatic system to drain toxins away, it exfoliates the skin to remove dead cells, and the stimulation of your cell renewal will help the skin to hydrate itself from within. It takes just seconds before you jump in the shower and then finish with a body cream to seal in moisture. I like to use a cream that contains hydroxy acids so that it actually helps to gently exfoliate as well as nourish my skin. Time to change foundation? Move away from heavier foundations and powders that could clog pores and could make your skin look worse. With the right skin care routine, as detailed above, you could get away with a tinted moisturiser or a lighter foundation. It’s also the perfect time to review your make-up and give it a bit of a spring clean. Throw away anything that you haven’t used for the past year – these products have an expiry date so look through and be ruthless! I recommend giving yourself a small beauty treat once a week, often it’s the small indulgences that make a dramatic difference in how you look and feel. After all, you can’t look after everyone else if you don’t take care of yourself too! By Kelly Shaw

Somerset Day - 11th May
The official day promoting all that’s great about our county.
Communities come together to celebrate Somerset Day Somerset Day has been created by a not-for-profit organisation ‘Passion for Somerset’ – in order to bring communities together and celebrate all that is great and special about the beautiful county of Somerset. Now in its third year, Somerset Day takes place each year on May 11th in honour of King Alfred the Great’s routing of the Vikings from his stronghold in the Somerset marshes in May 878! A fitting memorial to a county of entrepreneurs, artistic talent, manufacturing excellence amidst growing communities - and of course, beautiful venues that have inspired millions of tourists and visitors over hundreds of years…. And, in 2017 Somerset Day promises to engage with more people than ever before. According to Nigel Muers-Raby (Chairman of Passion for Somerset), there is a growing movement of businesses and communities who are committed to increasing awareness of the seventh largest county in England, in what has been described as one of Britain’s best kept secrets’, for all that it has to offer: “Somerset Day is just one day in the year where we put a mark down to recognise how lucky we are to work, live or play in this beautiful county” he says. “However, we mustn’t forget that there are 365 days in every year, and it an ongoing commitment to drive community pride as well as civic and corporate ownership in our county. Spring has sprung The other day someone said to me, ‘You are so lucky…you have a beautiful garden.’ I thanked her of course, but I really wanted to say, ‘Luck has very little to do with it. A beautiful garden does not happen by pure chance. It takes a bit of work and planning.’ As the spring equinox looms, the trees blossom and daffodils bloom. The garden is waking up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. I am excited to be outside in it but I’m aware for non-gardeners it can seem daunting when everything (including the weeds) starts growing at once! So where to begin? There are three fairly simple tasks which will get you off to a flying start. Pruning is the first task. It’s time to hard prune late-flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of hard frost is past. Spring flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade. If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems. Then a bit of lifting is required. Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing. Finally, stay on top of the weeds from the outset. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore.

But of course gardening is about planting things and one of the best things to plant now is lilies. If you have a bit of a slug problem like I do grow them in pots. Pots also have the advantage of protecting the bulbs. I hate slicing through them accidentally when hoeing. And pots mean you can grow them even if you only have a balcony. There are loads of varieties to choose from. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8inch / 20cm pot and five fit into a ten inch / 25cm pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because lilies are tall and terracotta provides enough weight to prevent them tipping over. Lilies need a well-drained open planting mixture so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost. Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting. By Rachael Leverton

St Patrick’s Day: an American invention? Shamrocks, leprechauns and gallons of Guinness – St Patrick’s Day is nearly here. But why has this saint’s day become so popular? And who was Saint Patrick? Well, it may surprise you to hear that Saint Patrick (or Padraig to use the Irish spelling) wasn’t actually Irish. He’s believed to have been born to Roman parents, in Scotland or Wales, in the fifth century AD. At the age of 16, Patrick was captured and taken to Ireland to live as a slave. For six years, he herded sheep on Slemish Mountain, until he managed to escape and flee Ireland. A dream led Patrick to dedicate his life to converting people to Christianity. He returned to Ireland and began to spread his message. Today, St Patrick is regarded as the founder of Christianity in Ireland. It’s believed that St Patrick’s Day was first celebrated back in the 17th century. Held to mark St Patrick’s death, it was a humble, religious celebration up until the 1920s. An annual military parade started in Dublin in 1931, but the day remained mainly a time for religious reflection, rather than painting oneself green and donning a funny hat. Bars were even closed on St Patrick’s Day, as a mark of respect, right up until the 1960s. Across the pond, in America, it was a different matter. There St Patrick’s Day became a day for Irish immigrants to celebrate their heritage. By

the mid-19th century, parades and festivities were being held in major cities across the US. According to author and university professor Mike Cronin, ‘St. Patrick’s Day was a public declaration of a hybrid identity—a belief in the future of Ireland as a nation free from British rule, and a strict adherence to the values and liberties that the U.S. offered them.’ In the 20 th century, corporations started to pay attention, and figure out how to take advantage of the celebrations. Pretty soon, T-shirts with embroidered shamrocks, inflatable bottles of Guinness, and even green McDonald’s milkshakes, started to become synonymous with St Patrick’s Day, at least in America. As with most American exports, some of these products have now become popular in the UK (though not, thankfully, green milkshakes), and in other countries across the globe. St Patrick’s Day is now celebrated in pubs, shops and student halls across the world. This year, Greening the City will see iconic landmarks across Ireland, from Trinity College, to Donegal Castle, go green on 17th March. If you’re lucky enough to be heading to Ireland for St Patrick’s Day this year, you’ll certainly have plenty of choices for where to celebrate. Memories of Taunton - With Nick Chipchase Bridge Street Taunton c 1904 This is a postcard by the Stengel Company of London but printed and artificially coloured in Saxony. Like so many good images this one originates in the “ Golden Age “ of postcard production dating 1902 to around 1914. Many are quite formulaic, though, and not so well animated as this one. The social historian will see a lot of interest here. We can date the image by the fact that the tram system opened in Taunton in August 1901. Initially six double decker trams were in use but these were replaced by single deckers in 1904 and the line relaid on granite setts which are not seen in the image.The covered cart belonged to Mr George Paul the well known Taunton pawnbroker.” Georgie Paul’s three brass balls “ the children cried. Paul’s shop was at the top of East Reach. There were three pawnbrokers in the town at this time. Above the cart is a sign for “ Pratt’s Motor Spirit “. The term “petrol “ was then covered by copyright by Carless, Capel and Leonard now part of Petrochem UK an oil refining business. Fashion seen here is of great interest. At this time lots of young children were employed and can be seen working on the streets. One here can be seen pushing a little handcart possibly for a bakery shop. Ladies are all dressed up in their finery and best bonnets for it was a special event to come into town. With no public transport to and from the villages people had to pay a shilling ( 5p ) a time to come in on the carrier’s cart. Usually fine weather

was selected for this. Ankle length skirts were the usual regime and one fine lady can be seen hitching up her skirt to walk along the pavement. To the left is the Telegraph Inn ,now closed, one of three public houses in Bridge Street . The others being The Myrtle Tree and The Black Horse. Taunton had around 90 public houses in 1904 serving a population of only 21,000. The public house served as a cheap refuge from a dingy home for many in the old courts of Taunton. In any case you did not have to pay for the heating and lighting, just the beer. Close to the Telegraph Inn was Gregory and Wrenn’s chemist shop now Taunton Stamp Shop. If you look inside you will see a lovely reminder of that old business in the forms of the old wooden fittings. Many have been removed from old chemist’s premises as they fetch a lot of money at antique auction. Don’t tell the stamp shop owner that. Bridge Street was home to many of the small trades seen in provincial towns in the early Twentieth Century. We had the chemist, three public houses, a post office, ironmongers , a baker (perhaps employing the boy with the handcart.), confectioners, tobacconists, dressmakers, china dealers , stocking makers and, of course, Spiller and Webbers who many older Tauntonian’s will affectionately remember. Zumba is one of the most popular exercise classes in the UK, with classes held in schools, community centres and halls across the country. 15 million people have tried it so far, for good reason. Zumba is fun, energetic and suitable for beginners up. You don’t need any special equipment, just some comfy clothes that allow you to move freely, and a pair of non-slip shoes. Mother’s Day By Susan Brookes-Morris This year we celebrate Mother’s Day on 26th March. You may not realise, but Mother’s Day happens on the fourth Sunday of Lent and originally had religious traditions attached to it. In the sixteenth century, it was a celebration of the ‘mother church’ and people would return to the church in which they were baptised or where they attended as a child. Thus families would be reunited. This was known as going ‘a mothering ‘or Mothering Sunday. It was commonplace for the Lent fast which prohibited sweet, rich foods and meat to be lifted a little and for a Simnel cake to be shared. Years later, youngsters working as servants were given an annual day off to visit their mothers and would take gifts. 20.
This was called ‘Mothers Day.’ The celebrations of Mothering Sunday and Mother’s Day have generally combined into one annual occasion. The first official Mother’s Day was organised by Ann Jarvis in 1908 in West Virginia as a memorial to her mum. By the 1920’s however Ann had become disillusioned by the commercialism of the day and especially the common use of printed greetings cards. Celebrating the day became less popular. It wasn’t until the second World War when soldiers wanted to acknowledge their distant mothers, that the day grew in popularity once more.

George This month has been an uneventful month so far. Well it’s been a bit on the cold side, not much to do, even the next door dog hasn’t made a showing, so I can’t even torment him. I have spent most of my time catching up of some much-needed sleep time. Last Thursday evening I was fast asleep upstairs on one of their beds when suddenly there is a commotion going on downstairs. The girls are screaming their heads off, when I say screaming I mean hysterical screaming, I know girls scream at anything, but this was a ‘being attacked by a homicidal maniac’ type of scream. Then I hear my Mummy carer screaming, “Get it…Get it!”. There is banging and shouting and my Daddy carer shouting, “Ok don’t panic, I’ll get George”. The bedroom door bursts open and I am unceremoniously hoisted from my slumber and whisked down the stairs into the lounge. “Mouse George mouse!”, he says, and makes little noises which I can only describe as feeble attempt to imitate a mouse. I think he’s trying to excite me into a full-scale ‘search and destroy’ mission. The girls and my Mummy carer are stood on their chairs still in a state of panic. So where is the mouse on the ceiling or something? Now no mouse is going to lay down in front of the fire when he knows there is a cat about, and a Supercat at that. No he’s gone to ground somewhere. Well I suppose I’d better show some enthusiasm. I go into stalk mode and stiff around and show some willing. Well it did have some calming effect as the family resumed their television/phone watching whilst I stood guard. Eventually they all went to bed and left me in the lounge on duty, normally I’m locked in the kitchen. All was quiet until about sunrise. I hear his little feet scurrying over laminate floor, I make a lunge at him just touching his tail as he disappears under the television stand. I dive over the back knocking all the DVD cases on the floor but the back of the television is like a blackberry bush of wiring. I can see him but all this wiring is 22.
preventing me from reaching him. I’m getting a bit frustrated and start pushing my way through. By now the wires are falling out of the back of the television and other electrical bits and pieces, then with one big lunge I grab him and with a killer bite he’s a goner. I triumphally take him into the kitchen to consume my spoils. It’s what cats do. I leave its head uneaten, one as proof of the kill and secondly, they taste awful. Still, I’ve proved my worth and should be in for some nice chewy cat treats if I’m not mistaken. A couple of hours later Mummy carer comes downstairs, “Oh my God, we’ve been burgled” she screams upstairs and Daddy carer appears inspecting the morning crime scene. “No, it’s George he’s been behind here looking for the mouse, he’s pulled all the wires out, it’s a mess, the modem, the surround sound speakers, the DVD and the TV box, this is going to take ages to sort out”. Then the girls arrive, “What’s going on with my phone, it’s stopped working and I need to get on Facebook to tell Molly what I’m taking to school”. She is distraught and nearly in tears. Then a scream from the kitchen, “Augh! there’s a head on the kitchen floor”, screams Mummy carer, “I feel sick”. I stand proud, yes mouse gone. Job well done, I await my reward, bring on the nibbles. With that the back door is opened and I’m shooed out without even some thanks let alone a treat, where did I go wrong! Well if that’s the gratitude I get you can catch the next psycho killer mouse yourselves and eat it!!!! Congratulations to Ampy for winning my cat photo competition in the last edition of our magazine. Out of all the entries I feel Ampy having once been abandoned, and lost his tail in the process... deserved the Christmas treats. I salute you Ampy!

Exon Domesday, normally held at the Exeter Cathedral Library, was created in 1086 as part of a vast survey of England ordered by its Norman conqueror, William 1. The document is the only surviving draft of Domesday Book, and covers the western counties of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset, as well as parts of Dorset and Wiltshire. Its 532 pages give a remarkable picture of the landscape and people of the South West at a time the Normans were taking control, and includes much information that Domesday Book leaves out.
