Back in February we thought this virus was as dangerous as catching a cold. Little did we know at the time the devastation it would cause to people’s lives and our economy. So many businesses with household names have been devastated. The economy is slowly recovering as we learn how the new ‘norm’ will affect our lives. Since speaking with the business fraternity in Taunton it revealed that some of the service industries, and local tradesmen are doing well. Some have taken the time to reinvent themselves with new ideas and new innovative ways of working. Most people are fed up with Covid-19 now, but learning to live with all the restrictions. What we need to be doing is protecting our local economy by buying local where ever possible. I know it’s a bit of a cliché but it really is important to protect local jobs. Too often people will criticise that there are empty shops in the high street, but all too quick to buy online. Christmas is looming, so give a thought to buying local. On a much lighter note, I hope many of you went to the ‘Pictorial’ (A History of Taunton) exhibition at the CICCIC (Paul Street, Taunton), which we gladly sponsored. There were a host of old photographs of Taunton, many kindly donated by Nick Chipchase, who writes an article in this magazine. There were some great photos, and all brilliantly displayed in revolving digital frames. There was also a treasure hunt to take part in across Taunton. They also produced an amazing book of photographs, which some have been colourised to great effect. The exhibition runs until the 10th October, and well worth a visit to help fundraise for the CICCIC.

W.C. Fry Chemist Shop c 1912. The photograph dates to around 1912 as the new owner Pettifer has hurriedly amended the shop front. The building now houses The Cats’ Protection shop. The entrance to Bath Place is to the left. Little else has changed though you might notice that the fine balustrade on the roof has been built in. Health and safety I expect. Mr. Fry’s specialties included ‘Fry’s Quinine and Iron Tonic’, and ‘Effervescing Saline and Spring Blood Purifier’. Tonics and Blood Purifiers were all the rage in Victorian times though most were quackery. He also sold respirators and a tonic for ‘delicate children’. Whilst excavating the big Victorian tip at Bathpool dating to 1892 we dug up two Fry pot lids. ‘Cold Cream’ and ‘Cherry Areca Nut’. Both came in two sizes. The excavation took over a year and all of the contents were recorded. Adcocks played a small part in my formative years. I joined Boots in Taunton as a chemist dispenser. Working out stuff in pre-decimal days was difficult so I had private lessons from the kind shop owner. Not the best of photographs but so rare and a recent addition to the archive. Mr. Fry was at 18 Fore St. from 1878 to around 1912. Prior to this, the shop was listed at 20 Fore St. from 1872. I am not sure if the numbering system changed but in 1878 Woollatt the chemist took over the address at number 20. Maybe Mr. Fry moved for some reason. If you look in the doorway of the travel agents at number 20 you will see Woollatt’s name in the doorway.

Later this became Boyd’s chemist with Adcock at number 18. Fry retired or died in 1903 when his son Albert took over the business. Describing Mr Fry in an account around 1900 it states that he had been in business in Taunton for 30 years in the oldest establishment of its kind in the town. No doubt that referred to the shop at 20 Fore St. when it was a chemist shop owned by Mr Lyddon in the 1840s. I have a nice bottle with his name on. Boyd’s business was listed as established in 1762.

Dispensing was an arcane craft back then. ‘Scripts’ were handwritten in Latin and everything had to be made up. Count up label and pour today with typed ‘scripts’. Heaven help us poor apprentices if we got air bubbles in the suppositories. Boots in Taunton must have tired of my inadequacies as after training I got transferred to work in Wellington Boots. I could write a book about my experiences there but for the moment this short piece will have to do.

Lockdown blues and shiny school shoes With Jo Middleton

mix of anxiety, acceptance, calm and boredom that I’m sure a lot of people have experienced. A lot of the highs and lows have evened themselves out, but still, things don’t feel right for me yet. I’ve loved seeing Taunton coming back to life - I’ve enjoyed being able to get my favourite peanut butter granola at the farmers’ market and sitting outside Mr Miles with a coffee - but it’s all the while with a cloud hanging over things, even on the sunniest day.

September is normally an exciting time of the year for me. Even though my children are all grown up now it still has a back to school feel about it. September to me is all about fresh starts and new projects, stretching out of the summer and getting enthused about new opportunities. This September though doesn’t have quite the same kind of optimism about it does it? Although the world is tentatively reopening, as much as I want to believe that things are ‘getting back to normal’, it still feels like it’s anything but. In the last issue I described the emotional rollercoaster I’d experienced during the first few months of lockdown - that heady

I’m an optimistic person by nature, and this negativity doesn’t sit well with me, but as much as I try to count my blessings and be grateful for my good health and the warm weather, I can’t seem to shift the feeling of uneasiness. Life is far from ‘normal’, whatever that might mean now, and I don’t like it. I don’t like not being able to hug people. I miss the events I used to attend regularly in Taunton, with the opportunity to catch up with all of those people that you know well enough to enjoy chatting with but not quite well enough to feel like you can contact them during a global pandemic. I don’t like wearing a facemask in shops and having my glasses steam up and I miss the spontaneity of a day out where you don’t have to book a slot in advance just to go for a walk.

I sound like a spoilt child I know, but the last few months have shown me more and more that these small pleasures and freedoms have a big impact on our mental wellbeing. Just a five minute catch up and a hug with an acquaintance can make a massive difference to a day, and an extended period without these regular interactions takes its toll for sure. I’ve talked to a lot of friends about it and many of them feel the same - they were sure, like me, that as time went on, their mood would gradually improve. They believed that as lockdown eased, so would that underlying feeling of tension, of being trapped, but no, it persists. At least it’s a comfort to know I’m not alone in feeling it. And so we head into a new season of lockdown and who knows what it will bring. Let’s all do what we can to be kind to one another. Blogger of 10 years at Slummy Single Mummy. The Last Word-Book Review With John Fish

Fresh Water for Flowers By Valérie Perrin. Translated by Hildegarde Serle Published by Europa Editions (Released: 9th July 2020) 476 Pages HB £16.99

A breathtakingly beautifully novel with the central character being Violette Toussaint and set in the Burgundy region of France. Violette who along with Philippe her husband a level crossing keeper but now she is a caretaker at a cemetery in Bourgogne. We meet the characters who work at the cemetery and also the visitors many come to make final arrangements and someone to talk to. Behind the scenes, Violette’s husband has disappeared, but he would normally disappear for days and then return, Violette knew of his affairs but this time it was clear he was not coming back. There is a tragedy in involving there only child which changed Violette’s life forever. Despite all this we have a central character who exudes warmth and humour but the real central theme is love.

When the local police chief Julian Seul came to make arrangements for lying his mother’s ashes on one of the graves, who turns out to be a past lover of his mother a connection is made between Julian and Violette and he hands over to Violette his mother’s journal to read. This opens up painful memories for Violette.

Our central character is a woman you will come to love, she is strong and has so much love to give each visitor to her cemetery. There are moments that will make you laugh but also make your heart burst. Originally written in French and translated by Hildegarde Serle.

Into the Tangled Bank: In which our author ventures outdoors to consider the British in nature By Lev Perikian Published by Elliott & Thompson 304 Pages PB £14.99 We are known as a country of animal and nature lovers, and during the lockdown many people found the connection with nature could help them and their families, keen birdwatcher and also conductor Lev Parikian in his new book Into the Tangled Bank takes a unique look at how we view nature and also interact with nature. Maybe it is your garden that gives you your nature fix with the bird table or the visiting fox? Lev Parikian begins by admiring a butterfly outside his house from here we are taken on a journey across parts of the country from Charles Darwin’s garden and then to various locations associated with some of the greats such as John Clare, The Reverend Gilbert White, Sir Peter Scott, Etta Lemon and Gavin Maxwell and also the ladies who founded the RSPB. We are taken to numerous locations from local patches to visit coastlines and even to the Isle of Sky, nature after all is all around us. When was the last time you stopped and just closely examined a tree? Lev also talks about the colourful nature programmes we see on the tv and why they are no substitute for getting out and seeing nature for real. Along the journey Parikian takes his battered notebook and talks to many people, from keen birdwatchers, nature photographers, dog walkers, the beginners and those just enjoying a walk in the fresh air about their own experiences of nature. Lev Parikian brings his humour to his latest book and is an enjoyable read whether you are an experienced or even new to discovering nature.

It was my 71st birthday on 5th July, which coincides with that of a good friend. For the second year running, we’ve managed to have a joint birthday lunch, this year at Mr Miles. We sat outside under a parasol, with social distancing and other COVID procedures strictly adhered to. My friend’s partner happened to walk by, and I invited her to join us. I ordered scrambled eggs and smoked salmon (highly recommended) but what to drink? I ordered a bottle of house champagne to celebrate, and what a great choice! It was Nicholas Feuillete Brut – a most enjoyable wine, made by the oldest union of producers of champagne. Mr Miles sell it at £30 per bottle - an extremely fair restaurant price when one considers it retails at £20, and Prosecco costs around £20 in a restaurant. All credit to Colin Barrell, the owner of Mr Miles. I write for a Facebook page, Martin’s Drinks Club. This has been a godsend during the long days and evenings of lockdown, so I’ve been stepping up my cocktail activities. Until now this has been restricted to regular write-ups, but now the webcam has finally arrived, we are shortly launching online interactive presentations. The number of readers is growing, which is very satisfying. It therefore seems logical to select one of these for this feature, but which one of the many delightful fruits of my efforts? However, one cocktail in particular has reached 335 people, three to four times as many as the next most popular one – The GAYLE SEALE cocktail. Gayle is the Global Ambassador for Foursquare Rum, the Barbados company which owns the outstanding Doorly’s brand. Gayle’s husband Richard is renowned for making some of the purest and most remarkable rums in the world. They also make Velvet Falernum, an iconic Barbados product providing sweetness and spices. I also used for the first time a beautiful Venetian cocktail glass, bought on Ebay. 10.

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with (cubed) ice. SHAKE WELL and STRAIN into a chilled fancy cocktail glass. This cocktail is quite complex, with superb balance and a long finish - perfect for sipping on a hot summer’s evening in the garden. The blend of rum, lime and Falernum is typical of the Caribbean, and comes under the heading of a “Tiki” drink. Most of the cocktails I make are termed “classic” and reminiscent of the great pre-war cocktail era. I’ve only recently been exploring the modern Tiki style and love it! If we can’t travel easily to the Caribbean because of cost and COVID, let’s bring the Caribbean to Taunton!

cases, while female stag beetles have shiny brown wing cases. Lesser stag beetles tend to have a much squarer overall look. A fully-grown stag beetle larva (grub) can be up to 110mm long. They’re fairly smooth skinned, have orange head and legs and brown jaws. They are nearly always found below ground and can be as deep as half a metre down.

Stag beetle facts Scientific name: Lucanus cervus Stag beetles are one of the most spectacular insects in the UK. The male’s large jaws look just like the antlers of a stag. They spend most of their life underground as larvae, only emerging for a few weeks in the summer to find a mate and reproduce. Stag beetles and their larvae are quite harmless and are a joy to watch. A stag beetle’s head and thorax (middle section) are shiny black and their wing cases are chestnut brown. Male beetles appear to have huge antlers. They are actually oversized mandibles, used in courtship displays and to wrestle other male beetles. Adult males vary in size from 35mm – 75mm long and tend to be seen flying at dusk in the summer looking for a mate. Female beetles are smaller at between 30-50mm long, with smaller mandibles. They are often seen on the ground looking for somewhere to lay their eggs. The beetle most often mistaken for a female stag beetle is the lesser stag beetle. However, lesser stags are black all over with matt wing

Stag beetles live in woodland edges, hedgerows, traditional orchards, parks and gardens throughout Western Europe including Britain – but not Ireland. Stag beetles are relatively widespread in southern England and live in the Severn valley and coastal areas of the southwest. Elsewhere in Britain they are extremely rare or even extinct. Female stag beetles prefer light soils which are easier to dig down into and lay their eggs. Newly emerging adults also have to dig their way up through the soil to reach the surface, therefore areas like the North and South Downs, which are chalky, have very few stag beetles. They also prefer areas which have the highest average air temperatures and lowest rainfall throughout the year. Larvae feed on decaying wood under the ground. Adults can’t feed on solid food – they rely on the fat reserves built up whilst developing as a larva. They can use their feathery tongue to drink from sap runs and fallen soft fruit. Males are often seen flying around at dusk searching for a mate. They will wrestle or fight other males using their enlarged antler-like jaws. Although they can fly, female beetles are most often seen walking around on the ground.

Once they’ve mated, females return to the spot where they emerged, if there is enough rotting wood to feed their young, and dig down into the soil to lay their small, round eggs in rotting wood such as log piles, tree stumps and old fence Stag beetles are legally protected from sale in the UK. They are also classed as a ‘priority species’, listed on Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. If stag beetles or their larvae are known or thought to be present at a site where an application for planning has been submitted, and are likely to be disturbed or destroyed whilst work is carried out at the site, it’s recommended that someone with an understanding of the insects’ requirements be present to see that any larvae or adults are carefully translocated to a suitable natural or purpose-built habitat close by. We’re particularly keen for people to record stag beetles in the counties on the border of their known range including Norfolk, Cheshire, Bedfordshire, Somerset, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Shropshire. Hello there, I’m Tim, and for the past two years I’ve been studying Environmental Science, and it has really opened my eyes to what is happening to our beautiful planet. The science is all pointing towards a future where we will have warmer and more extreme weather. This can be doomy and gloomy to think about but we need to fight for the future, for future generations. There is a difference between not turning the light off when you leave the lounge to make a cup of tea and the staggering pollution and waste that huge multinational companies make, but I’m a firm believer that even the smallest of changes to our day to day lives can and will add up to make a difference. Leading by example really does work! My Carbon Coach was started with this principal at the very core of what I do. Small changes, that don’t cost the earth, but add up to save the Earth. You can find me on most social media platforms sharing tips, tricks and advice on how to reduce our carbon footprints and to be more mindful of the impact our actions have on our surroundings. One very visual impact on our surroundings is litter, something I am very passionate about. I have started a campaign to #tidyupTaunton by holding monthly litter picks in different parts of our lovely town.

A common misconception that “going eco” is only for the well-off, and that couldn’t be further from the truth! In fact you should end up spending far less in an effort to create less waste! If you buy a plasticbottled drink for your lunch every day you can save money and the planet by not buying it and opting to have some water in a reusable bottle - A five quid water bottle will pay for itself in less than a week! You buying five less colas a week might seem like small change, but if a work colleague sees you do it then copies you that’s 10 bottles. If their husband does the same that’s 15, and so on! As much as we try to resist the idea, we are often very impressionable, but that isn’t always a bad thing! We will often adapt if we see others doing so too!

So far we have mostly tackled parks and play areas, and on the 16th of August we cleaned the area all around the train station. There has been amazing support for these events, but I am just one man and there’s only so much I can do. As part of the campaign I want to support individuals and communities to hold their own litter picks!

Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start and I can give you a helping hand with free advice, publicity and equipment lending! I’ve built up a supply of litter picking equipment, which I will happily share with anyone who wants to start their own litter picking adventure!

I’ve already had so many people volunteering and together have arranged a further five litter picks in August alone.

All reviews are marked out of 10. Anything above 5 is worth seeing, as taste is always subjective and spoilers have been avoided by concentrating on the craft, rather than simply the plot. Film reviews for this edition have moved to the small screen due to the cinemas being closed at the time of writing due to #covid19 stay safe all.

Project Power (2020) 1/10 I really do not trust the Netflix top 10. I’m sure they make it up then see who will watch the films they promote- 70% of the films wouldn’t even attract any viewers without this kind of promotion. This was another one of them. The concept is good - a kind of limitless story thrown together with the marvel hits, where it could have gone and should have gone is to have touched on the conspiracy theories of the wonder drug supposedly being used by the Hollywood elite. Instead it relied on CGI and that’s where it failed - a totally incomprehensible plot followed - there’s a market out there for people who like these type of films, it’s not a market I want to visit! Avoid.

The Fall (2013-16) 8/10 Ok, this is an old series for most of you but I’ve only just caught up on it and still on series one. It’s a great atypical british tv crime series with a twist or two led brilliantly by the lead of Gillian Anderson. Binging series like this help is all get through this bizarre year we are living in.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020) 7/10 It took me six times to watch this film and I’m glad I finally got to the end. Will Ferrell has made some great films, but he’s also made some terrible films, and I really thought this was in the latter category. It’s a great advert for the beauty of Iceland it a bit a of caricature of the Icelanders and Eurovision but that’s in its charm too, and the reluctant and unbelievable love story running through both helped and irritated at the same time. You’ll be glad when you finally get to the end, it’s probably about 30 minutes longer than it needed to be to be a great comedy but it’s worth a watch.

The Neighbor (2017) 8/10 I’ll give you a warning, if Fast and Furious is your type of film eg; a film with no script, fast cars, no acting, cgi then this isn’t the film for you.This is an intellectual thriller in the style of rear window. You see the whole film through the downfall of the main character It’s an American Beauty / Falling down destruction occurs the soul of a middle aged man who’s lost his purpose in life. He is awakened, but the awakening causes his downfall and leaves casualties in the path of destruction of his mental breakdown. It’s not a happy film but well scripted and acted drama on a common theme, man with the fast car gets the Pretty girl as a trophy he cares little about, man with the boring car gets the girl’s inner spirit and cares too much. A metaphor for life. The highlights were the pace and the acting - you feel like you’re watching a Clint Eastwood self directed film noir.

High Sea (2019-2020) 8/10 The most important episode to hook people is the first one and that is the failing here , however once you get past that you’ll get into and by episode 3 you’ll be hooked. At times it feels far fetched I mean how much draw a can there be on one boat but it’s well written well researched and truly engaging . Since becoming PCC in 2012, putting victims first, especially domestic abuse and sexual violence survivors, has always been a priority. We know lockdown has had a significant impact on victims who were living with perpetrators, who were even more isolated from loved ones and who felt that there was no way to escape. With restrictions changing all the time, we are beginning to enter the recovery phase of the pandemic and we need to ensure that all victims and survivors who have been at risk during lockdown know that there is help out there. I’ve allocated an additional £200,000 to the Commissioners Community Action Fund (CCAF) to support local charities, voluntary organisations and community groups to help deal with the consequences of coronavirus. Although Taunton Town F. C’s 2019-20 season came to an abrupt halt in March, due to the pandemic, there’s been plenty of activity at The Cygnet Health Care Stadium. There have been major changes in the Peacocks’ squad with four regulars moving on and eight new faces joining and the club are delighted to have confirmed the reappointment of Rob Dray as Head of Football for the 202021 season. Dray has been part of the management team since the summer of 2016, taking over the reins in September 2018 and guiding the Peacocks to runnersup spot in their memorable first season at Southern Premier level. Town were also well-placed to push for a place in the PlayOffs last term until proceedings were brought to a halt by the coronavirus pandemic. A decade recently passed since Kevin Sturmey became Chairman overseeing the club’s progress. Kevin commented on his milestone; “Every summer, squads change. Rob has put together a great group with a lot of talent on show and a squad that has begun to gel. We are hoping to be able to play safely in front of crowd’s next season. There is so much to consider but, in the end, we

George Taunton’s Top Cat - the word on the street. must be the one of the girls, I’ll have words with them when they come in from school, they don’t have to pay the bills, that’s the trouble”, He moans on. “Look, don’t have a go at us”, she says. “Yesterday it was set at fifteen degrees, it’ll be warmer in the fridge”. This goes on for about two weeks, we’d get a warm day, then a cold one so there never is a defined date where it’s officially cold. Autumn had arrived and that sudden shift in temperature just puts the seal on those warm summer days. It’s not the daytime so much but the evenings, that sudden chill and the dampness in the air. Truth is I can put up with it all. What really drives me nuts is the bickering that goes on every year about October time. She, (my adopted mother so to speak), wants the heating on whereas he, (my adopted master) wants it off until we are on the verge of hypothermia. “I’m freezing”, she says, “Well put a jumper on”, he replies. I have to say the girls agree with their mother as I do. “Have you turned the thermostat up”, he’d shout to her. “No I bloody haven’t”, she would shout back down the stairs. “Well someone has, the thermostat is suddenly gone up to 24 degrees, you could roast a chicken at that temperature, it

How I’d wish for some peace and quiet, however I know I could find a quiet spot somewhere if only he’d turn the heating up. What they haven’t sussed out is that I worked out what the thermostat is and where it is. It’s that’s little white box screwed to staircase in the hall and if I squeeze my leg through the bannister, I can just reach it. I don’t how to turn it up or down yet but I worked out when I hit the right side there is this little ‘boom’ noise in the airing cupboard and it’s gets hotter, but that’s our little secret. Anyway I don’t think it’s fair, how am I expected to where a jumper?

Over the last four months, we have increased our online offer, encouraged more people to join online and developed the Orderand-Collect’ service. This is a great way to try out a selection of books, as staff can hand-pick up to ten books for you to explore, based on the sorts of things you tell us you like to read. Now almost all of our buildings are able to offer the ‘Order-andCollect’ service, let customers use the public computers and browse the shelves. We want to ensure that staff and customers are kept as safe as possible, which means things will look and feel a little different – but we are delighted to be able to welcome everyone back.
