Last year I joined the National Trust and I was barracked by friends who told me I’d joined the cream tea brigade. It’s that thing you do when you retire. I took the flack and decided to visit Dunster Castle. It’s right on our doorstep but for some unknown reason we never visit it. I see it every day but there is this laziness or “maybe tomorrow” attitude.

We sit and watch Countryfile on Sunday television and marvel at these places, but never make the effort to go. Too busy or too much effort. So one Sunday we actually went to the castle. It was school holiday time and it amazed me how many children were there. Not only that but what the National Trust had put on for them, ‘Have a go’ archery, WWI Assault Course, re-enactment battles, falconry and even Exmoor Zoo had brought some animals along. This is not the image I expected. I’m thinking pensioners, and all I see is mums & dads, dogs, pushchairs and best of all; kids having fun without the aid of an electronic gadget. I was so impressed I joined the trust on my way out. This year I decided to offer my services and now work about fifteen hours a week with the National Trust, and love it. No cream teas either. If you are thinking of getting out and about there’s a great event coming called the Moonraker Challenge on Oct 14th, A night orienteering walk in the Quantock Hills, solving clues and finding your way between checkpoints. It is organised by the Rotary Club of Taunton Vale. So mums and dads can test out their map reading skills for it’s a walk over The Quantock Hills….at night!. Choose either a seven or fourteen mile stroll. Can you read a map? I’d have to brush up some old skills but I still have my compass….have you ?

Tourism and Heritage minister visits I am writing this just after a visit from the Tourism and Heritage minister John Glen MP. He visited Hestercombe House for breakfast with our MP Rebecca Pow, followed by a walking tour around Taunton town centre finishing at the Brewhouse. We were able to discuss the potential redevelopment and the progress the Taunton Theatre Association has made since the Brewhouse reopened in rejuvenating it. As those of you who read this column regularly will know I am not a politician so I am not recounting this tale for that reason. What this tour did remind me of was is what a great place Taunton is to live in and that we do have a generally good environment in which to spend our time. My team and I often face criticism about the town centre but it did look good that morning in the sunshine. We do know there is still plenty to do but I did reflect on how it can be a positive place and how much it has going for it. On the note of doing more, over the last few months we have been meeting with our major retailers to build up a plan for action in the town centre. They are positive about their businesses and are seeking to work together to improve the situation in the town. We will be looking to build up an activity plan which creates an improved town centre for you all over the coming years to give a better shopping experience. We are continuing to get a range of projects into place to support this improvement. One key to this is that we are making progress on the installation of the variable 4.
message signs guiding visitors and residents to key car parks. These signs will let you know where there are spaces free and hopefully help you get more quickly to a space. This combines with changes to the way you pay in seven of our key car parks, enabling you to pay when you leave. This has taken some time to sort out but the contracts are just being finalised with the companies who will install this equipment for us. I will be able to update you on the exact timings in my next article. On a different note in the autumn we are introducing a new online portal for organisers of events in Taunton Deane. At the moment we have quite a complicated set of requirements for people to meet which should be simplified with this new system as it will provide a one stop shop. We aim to make the process easier and a lot clearer which should encourage more activity in the area. This will show off all of the great spaces we have to offer. So if you are an events organiser keep an eye out for that. Taunton And Somerset Hospital. With Nick Chipchase I thought I would try a different media this time around. I apologise in advance if the image is impaired as it comes from a souvenir booklet printed by Barnicott and Pearce in 1913. In some 40 years of collecting Taunton items it is the only one I have seen so it must be very rare. The booklet was produced to mark the centenary of Taunton and Somerset Hospital 1812 - 1912. It contains numerous photographs but I have chosen this one as it clearly reflects differences in attitudes and behavior between 1912 and today. This is the nurse’s sitting room at East Reach awhere the immaculate staff are engaged in ladylike activities like chess, the piano and needlework . Having worked at the Musgrove Park Hospital social club for a while ( it no longer exists ) I am well aware how the medical staff of today would rather spend their free time. A tennis court was also built at East Reach across the road from the hospital for staff to engage in healthy outdoor pursuits. The booklet also shows a very sparse operating theatre, Gould, Liddon and Blake wards,the kitchen, laundry, dispensary and outside balconies for patients to lie in bed in the fresh air. My memories of the hospital are the removal of my tonsils c 1953 and casualty after being hit off my motor bike by my own doctor . Convenient to say the least. The former St Joseph’s convent was intended to be “ a general hospital for the relief of the sick poor “. The first stone was laid in 1772 but the project ran into dept before the building was completed. The Franciscan nuns , originally from Belgium , bought the property in 1807 and developed the site into a convent. Two years later Dr. Malachi Blake reminded the inhabitants of Taunton that to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the reign of King George 111 many towns were starting projects for the benefit 6.
of their people. His idea of “ a public medical institution for the benefit of the poorer inhabitants “ lead to a public meeting on how best to move forward. Following this Mr George Sheppard of Bishops Hull kindly donated the land and the hospital foundation stone was laid with Masonic honours on April 11th 1810. The Institution was formally opened on 25th March 1812 and consisted of four wards for twenty six patients,a surgery, committee room and Matron’s residence. in 1839 a new wing was added comprising another four wards.Further enlargements took place in 1842 ,1848 and 1873. In October 1888 the Victoria Jubilee Nursing Institute opened next to the hospital to promote intelligent and careful nursing in the treatment of sickness reflecting the self denying labours of Florence Nightingale. A gift of £5,000 from Mr James Broadmead of Langport established a special endowment for the Institute. Other additions included a children’s ward, an out patients department and dispensary. The tennis courts were laid out in 1896 for the benefit of the nursing staff. Electric light was installed for the whole building in 1898 and in the following year the laundry was extended and new apparatus installed. The hospital interior was remodernised in 1901 including an addition to the Nursing Institute ,moving the kitchen and servant’s quarters, the inclusion of a casualty room at street level and a passenger lift to the wards and operating theatre.1904 saw the arrival of X Ray apparatus. A fund was opened in 1911 at the behest of Lord Portman and proceeds were collected during the annual carnival. Eventually the hospital at East Reach outgrew it’s site and everything was transferred to the American Army Hospital at Musgrove. I have been an infrequent visitor to the casualty department there as well.

Running & Fitness Coach The Importance of Warming up and Cooling Down By Verity Wright, www.runverity.com
Many runners lace up their running shoes and head out the door saying they haven’t got time to do a warm up and sometimes it is very tempting to do this especially if you are pushed for time. If you are new to running it is important to get into good habits of doing a preexercise warm up, it only needs to take 5 minutes but the benefits of a good warm up are too good to miss, especially if you want longevity in your running. Warm ups allow your body to gradually adjust and prepare, not only physically but mentally for the harder work to come, if you are well prepared your run should be easier and you should run more efficiently. Warming up allows your heart and breathing to gradually make the transition from normal resting state to exercise state, this increase in oxygen will help enhance your blood flow to the heart, bringing oxygen and blood to the muscles and raise your body temperature all in steady and controlled way so that you don’t go from 0 to 100 within a few seconds. If you run before you are ready you run the risk of running off too quickly and burning out before you’ve even started and risk damaging cold muscles. Over time and if you warm up consistently you will improve your muscle efficiency, improve your balance and co-ordination as well as enabling you to become more flexible. Overall this will help you to reduce the risk of injury as you are not putting too much strain on your muscles too quickly. Quick and Easy Warm Up 1) Brisk walking helps your body adjust from not moving to moving as you use the same muscles in walking as you do in running. This will help increase the blood flow to your muscles as you prepare to go from walking to running. 2. Dynamic stretches are different from static stretches as you are using controlled movements to improve your range of movement in your arms and legs. • Try circling your arms forwards and backwards 10 times, this will help the blood flow get to your muscles and make your arms work more efficiently. Stand, 8.
balanced, on one leg and swing the opposite leg backwards and forwards, again 10 times, stand as tall and as upright as you can. Repeat with the other leg. • Skipping is a great way to increase your heart rate and is very similar to running as you are bounding off one leg and is great for co-ordination. Skip from one leg to another for 10 metres, as high as you can, turn around and skip back to where you started from. The cool down is equally as important as the warm up; it’s very tempting to miss a cool down as you head back through your front door or get straight back into your car. Your body needs to cool down and recover, basically the cool down is the warm up in reverse and is just as important. If you stop running abruptly this could potentially lead to cramps, soreness or dizziness especially if you pushed yourself on the last bit of your run. The purpose of the cool down is to help your body return to its pre-exercise state. Cooling down helps your heart rate and breathing return to its normal state. Quick and Easy Cool Down Walking helps to bring your heart rate back down to its normal state and allows your breathing to become more regulated. Once your breathing has returned to normal you can start to stretch. 1) Stretch your arms by crossing them around your body as though giving yourself a big hug. 2) Bend down and try touch your toes without bending your knees. Mayor of Taunton Deane 2017/18 Cllr Hazel Prior-Sankey
Summer engagements allow the Mayor and Consort to take part in a wide range of outdoor events – and the weather is usually kind! Special events so far include the annual Taunton Flower Show in Vivary Park, Somerfest and Somerset Live festival in Taunton and the Dragon Boat Race, in aid of Headway, on the River Tone. The Mayor joined other VIPs in the county for the Somerset schools’ country dancing festival at Wells Cathedral, while closer to home she joined the Great get Together in Longrun Meadow, one of the many national events inspired by the late Jo Cox MP.
Enjoying Taunton Flower Show - August 2017 FROM Buckingham Palace to Avonmouth Docks, the Mayor of Taunton Deane, Cllr Hazel Prior-Sankey has enjoyed a hectic first few months in her role. The Mayor is chosen every May by fellow councillors on the Borough Council and since that ceremony, she has packed a huge number of engagements into every week. The Royal Garden Party in the grounds of Buckingham Palace in June was a day to remember. If Avonmouth Docks sounds out of the ordinary, the visit was to see HMS Somerset, the Royal Navy’s Type 23 Frigate named in honour of the county.
Young people enrolled in the National Citizens Service (NCS) involve the Mayor in their social service projects and they have been helping to raise money for various charities. Taunton Deane has close links with the Armed Forces, through HMS Somerset and 40 Commando, based at Norton Manor Camp. The Mayor raised the flag to mark Armed Forces Day and will be raising the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day in September. The Mayor’s diary is still filling up – but two events for later in the year are already being planned: the annual Remembrance Day ceremonies and a charity Carol Service to be held at St Mary Magdalene Church on December 19, starting at 6.30pm.
The couple are the first in the Borough Council’s history to have “swapped” roles so each is fully aware of how demanding – and rewarding – the duties of the First Citizen can be. While Adrian accompanies the Mayor on as many occasions as possible, his place as Consort is occasionally taken by the couple’s daughter Joanna Hallett. The Mayor is supporting her two chosen charities, Stand Against Violence and Hestercombe Gardens Trust. She chose Hestercombe as the venue for her photography session for the formal portraits that every Mayor needs to have. 10.

On Sunday 23rd July the Friends of Lisieux had their annual ‘Quatorze Juillet’ garden party at the home of one of the members in Taunton. 18 people enjoyed lunch including home made salads and desserts and had a raffle to add to the society’s funds. Our society normally has events on a monthly basis and this year is looking forward to hosting our French friends from Lisieux at the end of August. We will be visiting Wilton House in Wiltshire which will include a Cream Tea and will also have a dinner in the evening. George There is a lot of commotion going on today – it looks like my carers are off somewhere. They are stuffing all their clothes into suitcases. I’m guessing they are off somewhere for their holidays. This means I’ll be taken down to that cattery place again while they are away. I remember last time – locked in a cage next to a rather pretty-looking feline who unfortunately did not have the ‘hots’ for me. I do enjoy the pampering and the food, even if I’m incarcerated for the duration. Cases in the hallway… I’d best hang around so they can pop me in the travelling cage. I wonder if that feline will be there… It would be worth a second shot at her – she just needs to see me in my best light… Hello, what’s going on? They’ve piled the stuff in the car and have driven off. What about me? I can’t survive on my own. Who’s going to feed me? Ah, I know – it’s just a day trip. Don’t panic, Ginge – it’s not holidays. It’s a day trip somewhere. Hang on. Why are they taking so many clothes? I smell a rat here – no, not literally, but something’s not right, here. Let’s not panic – there has to be an explanation. Eviction comes to mind, but they wouldn’t just leave me behind, surely? Perhaps they’re moving house… Perhaps they’ve forgotten me in all that commotion… They’ll be back, you wait and see. Well, several hours pass and no sign of them – and I’m getting hungry. Ah! I hear a key in the door. They’re back – told you not to panic. I was right; just a day trip. Bet they’ve been to a car boot sale –that’ll be it. “Hello, George”, comes a strange voice from the hallway. Hello, who’s this? It’s old Mrs Perkins from across the way. What’s she doing here? “Hello, my darling. Would you like some food?” she asks. Too right, I’m thinking, I’m starving here. She opens a tin and puts the contents into my bowl. “And as a treat I brought you some fish, too”, she mutters. Fish! I love fish! Mrs Perkins, you are my darling, too. She opens the packet and puts the fish down on a saucer. “It’s a nice piece of haddock”, she explains. Haddock! My favourite! But hang on – this is all yellow and stinks like it’s been on a bonfire. I can’t eat

this, it’s disgusting… She leaves me to eat my dinner and heads off out of the house. I gobble down my usual meal, but the fish is another matter… Well, it appears they have gone on their hols and left me in the capable hands of Mrs Perkins. Now, I’m grateful for her coming over, but there is no way I can eat the fish. I don’t want to appear ungrateful, but what do I do with the fish? I know – I’ll hide it somewhere and make out I’ve eaten it. I know just the place – behind the settee. Out of sight, out of mind, as they say. And it looks like I have the run of the house, so I think I’ll have a sleep on their bed. I’m not usually allowed on the bed, but while the cat’s away… Ha! Bit of a joke, there. Next day arrives and, right on cue, Mrs Perkins lets herself in. I wonder what she’ll bring in this time… “Hello, George. Did you eat the fish I gave you? Oh yes, you ate it all up – fins and all!” she says. She opens my usual tin and puts it in the bowl. “You eat that and I’ll just pop back and get you your treat”. She re-enters the kitchen after a short while and opens up another packet. No…! It’s that smelly fish again…! “There we are. You are a lucky cat, aren’t you?” she says. It’s another smoked-out haddock… I wait until she leaves and decide it’s better to put the fish with the other one behind the settee. Yes, you’ve guessed it – she brought me fish for the next eleven days. There was quite a pile of fish stacking up behind that settee… On the twelfth day, my carers arrive back – all brown and tanned. Don’t know why they went away, as we’ve had a bit of a heatwave here. They pile into the house, cases stacked up in the lounge alongside their new sombreros. “Hello, George. Mrs Perkins looked after you well, I see. Let’s put the kettle on – I could murder a cup of tea!” They all collapse on the settee, mugs in hand. “My God, what is that awful smell?” they shout. They all search the room, but I have a suspicion I may know the answer… “There’s a pile of fish behind the settee! How on earth did that get there?” shouts my Mummy carer. To be honest, I’ve no idea – could be something the cat’s dragged in. Best go out for a walk, I think…

Password problems made painless
I get loads of people asking me about fraud these days and how to avoid it. A cynic might say ‘trust people less’ but that’s a bit of a downer. In fact, the best thing we can all do to keep our private information safe is to take a fresh look at the online passwords we use. How not to do it I asked the team at Resolver about some of the big password fails that they’d encountered over the years and PIN codes provided some pretty wacky examples. One woman had written her pin number on the back of her debit card. Another person contacted us to complaint their bank had repainted the building and he couldn’t read the code which he’d written on the wall. I’m not making these up! These might seem extreme but lots of us have post it notes with our pins written on them in our bags or wallets. If this gets pinched, it could result in you not getting a refund if your bank thinks you’ve been ‘reckless’ (we can help you with that, btw). Picking a password Remembering passwords is tough. Believe it or not loads of people go for ‘11111111’, or even ‘password’. And office workers around the land are likely to have used the same password with an ever-increasing number at the end of it when the password change reminder comes up. But I have a lot of sympathy for people who go for easier options. If you’re dyslexic, or just don’t have a head from figures or remembering things, then you’ll struggle with the kind of passwords that security companies recommend. Creating memorable passwords doesn’t have to be hard though. So, let’s keep things nice and easy with a few tips:
•

Longer is better: it doesn’t have to complicated, but a longer password is much harder to crack. Stick a few of your favourite words together and use capital letters.
•
Sing it! If you’ve got a favourite song then take the first letter of each word in the chorus. The sequence of letters will be totally random but you’ll know it. Remember not to sing it out loud when in public!
•
Mix it up. It makes sense to use different passwords for different things – but you don’t want to end up with tons of the things. So why not use different passwords for three separate things: money matters (the most complex password), shopping and leisure.
•
Use special characters: But make them random ‘@’ instead of ‘a’ is easy for hackers to crack. So, think of a number that you’ll remember and use the character on that key on your computer. Make sure it’s not a birthday or guessable number though.
•
Don’t trust your browser to remember your password. Autofilling is a great tool, but browsers are vulnerable to hackers. Even though it’s a bit of hassle, fill in the details yourself and delete your cookies when you can.
•
Be random: Think of something that makes you smile, like a celebrity doing something unusual, like ‘Cher on a pear’. The visual image will be your memory jogger.
And one last thing to help you stay safe online. You know those quizzes you see on social media? The ones that tell you what Disney character you are or things that guess your age from a picture? Many of them allow the makers to ‘mine information about you – and they can get a surprising amount too. For example, your mother’s maiden name crops up repeatedly on these quizzes – and it’s a key bank identification question too. So, ditch the quizzes! Stick with LOLcats, it’s safer! Pet health Be babesiosis aware! By Danielle Giles, Heathside Veterinary Surgery. Voted the Best Small Vet Practice in the Best UK Vet Awards 2017.
Earlier this year, news across the UK broke out that a new “deadly tick-borne disease” had been diagnosed in dogs in the southeast of England. A parasite living in red blood cells known as babesiosis disease is similar to malaria, but is transmitted by tick bites. This disease has now been confirmed to have reached the UK for the first time. Babesiosis has been common on the continent and across the world for years but the UK has been lucky enough to avoid it being surrounded by water. The UK has had reported outbreaks before but these occurred in dogs that had travelled to Europe. The difference this year is that the outbreaks occurred in dogs that have not been abroad or in direct contact with dogs that had; which indicates that infected ticks are in fact in the environs of Kent and surviving. Babesiosis is caused by a parasite called Babesia canis. The parasite infects the dog’s red blood cells, destroying them and triggering the immune system to respond. Unfortunately, in the body’s efforts to destroy the parasites the immune system destroys its red blood cells. The symptoms to look out for are: lethargy, appetite loss, weight loss, a shortness of breath, anaemia, jaundice, high temperature, discoloured waste and swollen lymphs. Many affected dogs get very sick, so the prognosis is guarded. Treatment can be expected in the line of anti-protozoal drugs, medications to reduce the immune system’s attack, intravenous fluids, sometimes blood transfusions and intensive care. The anti-babesia drugs are not licensed for use in dogs in the UK, and may need to be imported from France or Spain, where the condition is common. The parasite Babesia canis does not usually spread from dog to dog but is via a tick bite. Though theoretically, infected blood on blood transmission is possible, for example if dogs fight and blood is drawn. It is possible that a bitch may infect her unborn pups too. It is understood that the UK’s most common tick the 26.
sheep tick or Ixodes ricinus does not carry the parasite and that it is the rarer meadow tick Dermacentor reticulatus that carries the parasite. Babesia canis does not usually infect people, we are thought to be at a very low risk. But other Babesia species have managed to “jump the species barrier” into people with weaker immune systems. Care should always be taken to avoid being bitten by ticks as they do carry other nasty diseases; removing one as soon as possible should minimise disease transfer. Almost certainly, this disease will spread further afield than Kent. Ticks will latch on to foxes, deer and other forms of wildlife which will carry them and their infection across the countryside.
There is no vaccine for Babesiosis in the UK. But you can help to reduce its transmission by removing the tick as soon as you notice it. As ticks do not transfer the parasite for 24-48 hours after burrowing its mouthparts into the dog’s skin, there is a window of opportunity to minimise risk. Using a hook to twist and remove will help. However, any product that will repel or kill them rapidly, will lower any risk of infection. The range of veterinary grade products available from your vet as spot-ons, collars and tablets are highly effective. If you think your dog has been infected, you really need to see your vet as soon as possible and fully explain your concerns. Urgent treatment is needed for your dog to make a full recovery and the more information you can give your vet the sooner effective treatment can begin. It is always good practice at the end of a walk to just run your hands over your dog to ensure that ticks have not grabbed a lift on his or her coat.

Many people work in a job they dislike or find it difficult to stay focused at work. The days seem long and they can’t wait to get home, go out with friends, or see their family. How easy do you find it to stay motivated at work? How would you like to make changes to enjoy your work more? Read on for my top tips.
5. Have something to look forward to - whether you are planning your next holiday or a night out with friends, schedule activities and events that you love. Or if you are working hard to afford a new car or other big expense, remind yourself of what you are doing to achieve that goal.
1. Plan your day - it can be hard to be motivated when you see the clock going around slowly and it feels an eternity until 5pm. So, plan activities into your day, such as the tasks you need to achieve, and also make time to stretch your legs or make a drink. Then you will be amazed how fast time will pass and what you will achieve.
6. Remember that you don’t have to work flat out all of the time - make sure you take a break every so often, have a chat with your colleagues or do a different task. 7. Take a lunch break away from your desk or working area - fresh air and exercise is a great motivator and it is good to give you time away from your work. It has the added advantage of making you feel more refreshed and more productive.
2. Remain positive - office politics or negative colleagues can often reduce morale and make people feel demoralised and demotivated. So, what can you do to remain positive? Remember the good things, the thank-you’s, the positive comments and thoughtful appreciation. Then share your positivity with others.
8. Delegate some work to others - delegation of the right tasks will help you to reduce your workload and will also give a new challenge to another person. Show them what to do, give them a timeframe and then let them get on with the task. 9. Set goals for your working future - if you don’t want to be in the same job in one year’s time, do something about it. Set a goal of where you want to be, and then start to work on it today. What can you do within the next two weeks to move you closer to that objective?
3. Manage your projects - if you are working on a project which feels daunting or overwhelming, take some time to break it down into manageable chunks. What can you do today to move the project forward? Setting and achieving mini-goals will motivate further and help you to achieve the project. 4. Consider what you enjoy about your job - even those people who are really unhappy at work enjoy one or more aspects of their work. Remember what attracted you to the job in the first place, what you enjoy and appreciate, and how it benefits other parts of your life. 28.
