Welcome EDITOR: Clive Smith hello@tauntonlocal.com
I think we had all been depressed with the amount of rain, cold winds and snow we’ve endured this winter. At last some sunshine to lift our spirits. I know Vivary Park has been waterlogged and the golf course closed on many occasions. It’ll be nice to see some people out and about enjoying themselves.

Summer festivals
Unit 1, Roughmoor Industrial Estate, Williton, Somerset, TA4 4RF.
I am writing this in April where miraculously we have finally had a few sunny days after what was a very long winter. Colleagues reminded me yesterday that only a couple of weeks ago people were digging themselves out of snow. Moving away from the long winter we now have a summer of great events and activities to look forwards to in Taunton. In July Vivary Park hosts three great artists on consecutive evenings. These are Billy Ocean whose back catalogue had us tapping our feet in the office, the chart topping Paloma Faith and the Kaiser Chiefs who are one of my favourite bands. I must admit I am really pleased with the line- up which gives locals a chance to see these acts on their doorstep. We welcome back fake festivals to longrun meadow on 28 th July which last year was a roaring success providing a great rock and festival experience over a one day period, which means you can avoid the pitfalls of Glastonbury. There are a whole range of other activities with Community Arts Festival Taunton Live taking place on 21st June this year which will provide a range of activity for all the family. On that family theme we have Somerfest on 16th June which will deliver a first class street performance festival with plenty of quirky and interesting acts in the line-up. Somerfest has now become a day which people pop in their diary and get into the town centre to enjoy.

Following on the theme from my last article by the time you read this my team and I will have submitted a full planning application for the Coal Orchard development. The detail of this will be subject to consultation and I am hoping will broadly speaking be positively received. Also following on the theme from last time I am involved in judging the Taunton Deane Business Awards. I can`t tell you who has applied as I am sworn to secrecy but the quality is great and this is making judging a tricky business. This just shows again that we have great businesses striving to be successful in our area. The winners will be announced in the next few months with the awards ceremony in June. On a transport front we heard in the past few week`s that the Junction 25 improvements now have planning permission and all of the funding in place for them to go ahead. This has been long in the planning and I want to publicly congratulate County Council colleagues on the work they have done to get this junction improvement to this stage. These jobs are very tricky and unfortunately always take longer than we would like. Finally and after much work my project to deliver Variable message signage and to convert 7 key car parks will be put into proactive through the coming months which you will see on the roads in around Taunton. It is said that more photos are taken now in one day than in the entire history of photography 1800 - 1900. Well these were certainly the formative years and it is amazing how the technology has ( and will ) change over the years. Camera technology is now driven partly by the improvements in mobile phones leading us ever forward in intuitive camera performance. Its easy to forget that few people had cameras in 1900 . People had to take their families to a local studio for their photos .One such studio is represented here in the studio of E.E. Cox who produced marvelous real photographic postcards of the Taunton area. Illustrated is a super “shop front “ postcard as we collectors call them. Few arrived in the “ family album “ as they were not particularly collected at the time of publication .Most folk in 1904 - 1912 swapped topographical cards with friends in other locations. These we call “ view cards “. Still around in huge quantities but limited in social history appeal. Mr Cox was at 4 Albemarle Terrace now numbered as Station Road and situated between the Railway Inn and Albemarle Road. Directories list him at this address from 1906 to 1923. In 1927 the address was 65 Station Road so probably the same premises. Incidentally the 1951 directory lists this address as Jouvani, Ice cream merchant. The Curry Bazaar in the 1970’s which I am
6.
sure folk of my generation will remember. Cox recorded many local back streets and local events including the carnival from at least 1907 to 1927. Another of his postcards shows him with his BSA motorcycle and sidecar Y3393 which taxation records at the Heritage Centre show was registered to him in May 1915. The years between the wars saw the decline of photographic studios. Many people bought the Kodak Brownie Number Two which was introduced in 1901 and ran in production until 1935. In fact a variety of Brownies with their roll film were in production until the 1960’s .People could, at last, take their very own photographs and send the film off for developing and printing. There were eight photographic studios in Taunton in 1900 but this had reduced to four in 1950. The latter really specialising in portraits and wedding photos and those remarkably wide images of all the children at school. Now its all about social media. The photograph has become so ubiquitous it has lost all sense of meaning. Snapchat and Facebook are the photo albums of today but how many of those images will still be around in another 100 years.

Want to Hear Some Juicy Gossip? How to deal with being the target of a malicious rumour. By Tracey Anderson
Ignore: My first friend was right about ignoring the gossip. Rumours often have a short lifespan if they are deprived of oxygen. Don’t deny too hard: If anyone questions you say, ‘That’s not true,’ then change the subject. Laugh it off: A roll of the eyes and a smile can give the impression that only an idiot would believe the gossip. People don’t want to be idiots, so this approach may make them question the rumour. Don’t react: Like ignoring. Don’t shout or cry. Gossips love to create drama. If you don’t react, there’s no drama…move along, nothing to see here. Last year I became the target of mailicious gossip. I’m ordinary, in my forties with a husband, children and a small group of friends I’ve known for several years, so to be a target of an unsubstantiated character assassination blindsided me. No smoke without fire the saying goes, but there was no fire I could think of. *Jen was a newcomer to our social group and was the instigator of wild allegations about me almost immediately. ‘She’s nuts,’ a close friend said, ‘Ignore her.’ Easy to say but when long-standing friends turned their backs on me it hurt. Usually if someone dislikes us we rationalise it: they are loud, and we are quiet; they have different core values; we represent a minority group they have a visceral reaction to. None of these applied. I had no idea what had caused this or how to react. I stopped going for drinks and left the yoga group we both belonged to. I felt sad and isolated. In desperation I emailed a friend who is a clinical psychologist. Her advice changed everything, and I offer it to you here.

Keep your real friends close: Gossip at least reveals who you can trust. Those who stand by you are true friends. Let them know how much you appreciate them, but never bitch about the gossiper. Keep yourself above all that. It’s hard to do but worth it…believe me! Don’t seek revenge: It’s tempting, it really is, but don’t. The best revenge is to live the best life you can. Acceptance: If someone decides to go full character assassination on you there is little you can do. The best policy is to carry on being the person you are. Stay true to you and wait it out. I had to accept that because of the actions of one woman, my friendship group changed. Some friends stood by me, others turned their backs. But things settled to a new normal. I joined a new yoga group, which turned out to be better, started a ballroom dancing class and made some new friends along the way. I may never know why Jen tried to ruin my life, but I’ve moved on and can honestly say it no longer matters. *Not her real name

Neighbourhood Watch
According to legend, the two things that drive us Brits to distraction are bin collections and *ahem* dog mess. Without getting all ‘Victor Meldrew’ about it, we all have at least one thing that goes on in the neighbourhood that makes us seethe with rage. Despite the bin and dog haters, it’s parking tickets and council tax disputes that generally drive most local authority complaints. Yet surprisingly, no matter where you are the UK the top ten environmental health complaints are all remarkably similar. The term ‘environmental health isn’t (just) about recycling and the local environment. It’s a catch-all term for everything from noise pollution to pest control and from messy neighbours to dodgy drains. Some of these complaints are relatively easy to deal with. Some, however, can become issues that drag on for years. At Resolver, I see a variety of complaints about all sorts of things that might make your write or call your local council. Here are few of the main ones – and what you can do about them. Litter and fly tipping are an increasing concern to people these days. But this isn’t just the ‘Blue Planet 2’ effect. How your local town looks can affect how you perceive your community, from councillors to neighbours. When I speak to local councils, I often explain about the importance of listening to comments before they become complaints. So if there’s a local site where tipping takes place, or a bin on the high street that’s always overflowing, then it makes sense to tackle it early before it becomes an issue. A surprisingly large number of complaints to councils are about trees (branches that need trimming) or hedges (woe betide the council that leaves a hedge to go native). Lots of neighbourly disputes arise thanks to trees and hedges. My top tip, compromise where possible. Some of the nastiest (and most expensive) legal battles I’ve seen have involved things that grow or miniscule boundary disputes. This doesn’t mean you should let next door get away with bad behaviour. But it’s 10.
worthwhile taking a deep breath, inviting them round and bashing out a compromise where you can. Of course, this isn’t always possible. Noise, threats and unruly neighbours are a nightmare – and you need your council’s help if the problem is ongoing. Again, quoting the law isn’t always going to be the solution (you end up trapped in legal debates that can be exhausting). But mediation really can make a difference – or at least demonstrate how reasonable you’re being. Interestingly, though noisy neighbours make the list, it’s messy neighbours who spark more complaints. I also see a smattering of complaints about more ‘specific’ issues, like unsafe playgrounds, grumpy council staff and ‘those pesky kids’ (underage drinking in parks usually). As is often the case, some of these cases may seem petty, but when you look at the context, there are wider issues at play. Every council does things differently, which means some situations are specific to where you live. For example, rubbish collections certainly do make the top ten, but in some areas it’s the bins not being collected, in others it’s the sheer number of bins, or being penalised for not putting the right things in them (or shutting the lids). If you need to complain to your council, it helps to get a bit of evidence. Photos are useful or keeping a diary if you’re unhappy with a noise pollution issue. Stay calm and think about how you want the problem to be resolved. Many councils offer mediation for neighbourly disputes, which can save you years of hassle. Though every council is different, they should all follow the same rules when it comes to making a complaint. Get started throughwww.resolver.co.uk. SUCCESSFUL DATING Understanding Negative Emotions By Sophie Personne
quirk of the car. It’s going in the garage soon anyway, so you’ll get them to have a look then. Basically, you’ve got used to it… And it is pretty much the same with negative emotions. They can become a familiar feeling that we try to push away. Wouldn’t you prefer to be able to have no warning lights coming on and interfering? How will you know if there is a genuine problem with the oil pressure before you go to the garage?
Many of us are regularly told to be more positive and to refrain from negativity. Whilst I totally agree that negative thoughts are damaging, I strongly believe that we shouldn’t suppress them. A negative emotion has a purpose, especially when it keeps on coming back. It’s designed to draw your attention to a problem so you can do something about it, but you will need to identify it first and then, work out why it makes you feel this way. A good example to relate this to, would be when you are driving your car and the fuel light comes on. What it is saying to you, is that unless you put some juice in, the car will stop and come to a halt in approximately 50 miles, which is fairly straightforward. We don’t see it as something bad, just something that needs dealing with. So, you have now been to the station and your car is full. You are on your merry way somewhere and all of the sudden, the oil light comes on. At the earliest opportunity, you check the oil, and put a bit more in. A couple of weeks later, the oil light comes on again, but you remember that it actually wasn’t that long ago that you had a look and topped it up. You check it again just in case and the level is ok, so all good. However, this keeps on happening randomly so after a while, you don’t really bother checking it anymore because you know it’s a 16.
GRAPHIC DESIGN, PRINT & DIGITAL MARKETING SPECIALISTS BASED IN BEAUTIFUL TAUNTON.
Negative emotions control some of our responses. Have you ever witnessed someone reacting way too much to something? Or are there some people that just push your buttons? The truth is, sometimes, you’re not really reacting to them but to a situation that happened long ago and that is engrained at the back of your mind. Once you deal with them, your negative emotions will not need to keep on showing up because there will be no reason for the warning light to come on. That is all they are, a warning system that lets you know something needs to be addressed and motivate you to do something about it. Unfortunately, when these negative emotions are left unresolved, they tend to attract more of the same. Remember that the unconscious mind doesn’t deal with logic or words but feelings. When something hurts us emotionally that badly and with such vividness, your brain will remember it. As soon as something remotely similar happens (or we perceive it to), the brain will react in the way it knows best. You create adverse momentum and feed it. Forcing yourself to be positive is not the answer, dealing with the problem is. So next time you are feeling low, ask yourself why and get to the bottom of it. Remember that there are always more ways than one to look at something so understand the negative emotion, reframe it to something that is acceptable to you and turn it into a resourceful state. We can all turn negatives into positives if we consider them from a different angle. Sophie Personne is a Relationships Expert and Author. TEA TIME
Separation – What do I need to know?
…and a game of golf bingo! By Tom Hancock
Like many amateur golfers I’ll be glued to The BMW PGA Golf Championship at Wentworth this month. I’m a spectacularly mediocre player who occasionally plays a good round, and the hope of repeating that is what keeps me returning to the course. Golf is addictive like that… it’s crack cocaine with clubs Almost as addictive is ‘golf bingo’. Never heard of it? Next time you play, tick off as many types of golfer as you can during a round. Bonus points if you’re playing alongside them. Minus points if you’re one of them. The Waggler - Budget speeches don’t last as his pre-shot routine, and worse it makes no difference. Five full practice swings will be followed by a slice into neighbouring woodland…every time. Mr. Mobile - His phone rings in the middle of your first backswing, it’s an urgent call. He then puts it vibrate where it does just that repeatedly, sounding like an angry hornet trapped in his back pocket. Amusingly, the number of phone calls is usually inversely related to the importance of his (it’s nearly always a bloke) job. Seriously, if Obama could play an uninterrupted round there’s no excuse! The Croucher - He reads every putt from every angle… then misses anyway. I may be this man! The Guru - Offering unsolicited advice on everything
from your swing to the choice of caddy. It would be so much easier to take if he hadn’t already lost six balls before the third hole. The Sulker - Every golfer has a bad round or three, but he (nearly always a bloke again…sorry guys) can’t laugh it off, and refuses to drink it off, so storms off instead. The Traditionalist - He dresses like he’s playing in the Ryder Cup circa 1929. I secretly admire his dapper style…but my daughter would kill me if I dressed like that. The Chatterbox - She (sorry ladies but this one is nearly always a woman) talks over every putt, and all the time you’re setting up for a drive. And you’re never sure if its accidental or whether it’s part of some diabolical masterplan to mess with your game!
The church had been a great supporter of the Morris traditions until the Reformation. After this it was considered frivolous and frowned upon by the authorities for many decades until the restoration of Charles II 18.

If you are cohabiting and have taken action to protect your position, particularly if one or both of you had your own assets before you got together, and entered into a Cohabitation Deed, then this document will of course be taken into consideration and reviewed upon separation. This can specify what agreements you have reached. The property ownership can also be considered at that time.

Mr. Angry - He can throw a toddler-worthy tantrum over a missed six-foot putt. It’s both amusing and cringeworthy and you can’t take your eyes off it. The Blamer - It was the sun, the wind, a passing pigeon, a buzzing bee, celebrations from the next hole, a bad back, a gippy tummy, a fight with a spouse…anything in fact except their lousy swing. Anyone call ‘House’ yet? Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to practice my waggle?
May Day - Morris Dancing Morris dancing is a part of the May Revels, or May Day celebrations. It dates back to late mediaeval times and the earliest mention is from 1458. The origins of the name are unknown. There is speculation that it has Spanish Arab roots and comes from ‘Moorish Dancing’ but this is not provable. Many of the earliest known records relate to the early 16th century English Royal Court, so it is possible that there may be some connections with the courtly Morisco dances seen in continental Europe at that time.
Lots of people live together without getting married. If your relationship ends then you will not have the same rights as people that are married. If you are unmarried then you may be able to claim a right on a property under trust law but this is a complex area of law and can be very expensive. Unmarried parents can make financial claims in relation to children. The main claim is for child maintenance and there is also the possibility of a claim under specific children legislation for financial assistance if there is hardship.
in 1660. ‘Merrie Englande’ saw traditional festivities experience a renaissance and the dances we see today are believed to have mostly developed in the hundred years or so after this date. Changes in social patterns, social mobility, and types of recreation in the Victorian era meant that by the end of the 19th century the Morris had become rather unfashionable. It came very close to dying out completely, then by chance, the folk song and dance collector Cecil Sharp saw the Morris at Headington on Boxing Day 1899, and started a revival which continues to this day.

Helping you bring out your best in business...
British Sandwich Week May 14th – 20th By Hannah Fenton
• Are you running a business but unsure of your direction or how to take the next step? Soggy sandwiches divide people. I think it’s down to intention. Consider the deliciousness of a sloppy stewed steak and onion filling where the gravy soaks into the bread. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Then consider a soggy cheese and tomato sandwich from a bad buffet. I think you’ll see where I’m going with that. Yet nearly everyone I spoke to while researching this article said a dry sandwich is unacceptable. Lack of butter, or filling is a sandwich crime. To avoid sandwich sogginess...or dryness, a good layer of fat such as butter or an olive oil spread will resist moisture and keep it in the sandwich rather than letting it soak into the bread.
Ever since John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich ordered cold beef between slices of toast, to avoid getting up from his card game, his name has become synonymous with our favourite lunchtime choice. But what makes a good sandwich? Start with good bread. Any bread you’re using for a sandwich should be delicious enough to eat on its own. Make your own or buy a high-quality artisan loaf. If you only have supermarket bread, try toasting it or charring it on a griddle. It should be crisp enough to provide some structure to the foundation of the sandwich but yield in the centre. Rolls are good for sloppy fillings if you carve out a little bread from the dome of the roll to create a little space for them. This stops the filling sliding out when you take a bite. When it comes to selecting the right bread for your sandwich it comes down to personal preference. A good place to start is balance of texture. A soft roll complements crisp lettuce or crunchy coleslaw, or hot chips. A thick-crusted toasted bread is great with pulled pork or roasted veg. But these are guidelines only - a soft rolled filled with mashed egg and mayonnaise is a joy and yet has almost no contrast in textures. 20.
On to the vegetables. Wash and dry them then season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. This extra step is small but makes sure the veggies pack a flavourful punch with every bite. Creamy but sharp coleslaw, or tangy pickles add a vivid brightness to the ensemble. A nutritionally well-balance sandwich will probably contain protein. From ham to egg to tofu the protein is better if it’s well flavoured and thinly sliced, diced or mashed. Too thick and it becomes difficult to bite through and chew. Think about the position of the individual elements within your sandwich too. Would the meat be better placed in the centre or on the bottom? would cold elements be better layered on top of hot elements? My personal bugbear is thick slippery slices of tomato in the middle of a sandwich, so when you bite into it there is a tectonic plate shift and one slice of tomato shoots out of the far side and lands in your lap! We take the humble sandwich for granted yet we all know when we’ve had a great one. So, let’s hear it for National Sandwich Week. Smell the bread, admire the layers, season the filling and take a big bite.

The Diaries Of
Ginger
Covering Somerset & Devon
George When is it going to stop raining? I’m not a great lover of water, but every time I look out the window it’s raining. This is not good, as I still have to go out and keep a check on the other cats in the area. You see, it’s my job to sort out any problems and disputes. I was up the park, sitting under a tree and I see Smokie walking slowly past – and he’s limping badly. “What’s up?” I ask. “Caught my leg on some rubbish on the edge of the park.” he answers. “Looked like some human has dumped it there – there was some wire sticking out and I got caught up in it.” Poor old Smokie – he had a bad gash to his back leg. “Looks nasty.” I say, “I’m afraid you’ll be off to the vet’s with that one.” Smokie hobbled off back home. I feel for him. If there is one place I hate going to, it’s the vet’s. People poking, prodding and putting in things that shouldn’t be allowed. It’s true what he says – these humans just discard their rubbish without a thought for anyone else. Next day, as it was raining again in the evening, I decided to stay in and get comfortable on my carer’s lap. They were all watching a programme on the TV about waste
Full public liability insurance. plastic on the beaches. “Don’t worry about the beaches,” I thought, “nip up the park.” There were pictures of poor sea creatures entangled in discarded fishing nets, and turtles with their heads stuck in old plastic beer can holders. Then it showed tons of rubbish washed up on the shoreline. This is all humans’ fault – just no consideration for the animals who have to live there. Where is this all going to end?
Local experts in all aspects of roofing.
From leaks and repairs to full re-roofs, fascia and guttering replacement.
The following day, the sun came out – that makes a change. I reckon I should amble up the park and take a look the pile of junk Smokie got caught up in. And when I get there, I can’t believe it – there’s an old sink, a pile of old bricks and reels of barbed wire! No wonder poor Smokie got into a mess. Anyway, I think I’ll nip down and see if he’s been patched up. No sign of him on the streets. Maybe have a look around his house. I jump up on the window sill and see if he’s inside. There he is sitting in the armchair. But, hang on – I can’t believe my eyes!

His leg has been bandaged up, so it looks like they did take him to the vet’s. But – how unlucky can you get? He’s only got his head stuck in a coned plastic lampshade or something…! How the hell did he manage that?

Garden View - Ground Control You can’t go wrong with a geranium. They grow well where other plants struggle, particularly those shady areas, or parts of the garden with poor soil. And they are so useful - they provide hundreds of pretty flowers and also smother the ground with a welter of leaves that prevent weeds from taking hold. Don’t confuse these hardy geraniums with the tender bedding plants with the horseshoe leaf-markings. They may be commonly called geraniums but they are in fact pelargoniums and not hardy so would perish in a hard frost. True geraniums are as tough as old boots. There are loads to choose from offering a wide range of colours and habits. If you want a carpet of tiny pale pink saucer flowers try Geranium sanguineum striatum. It’s great for growing in the crevices of a garden path, or even in a shallow tub or sink where its finely cut leaves show of the flowers to their best advantage. Geranium macrorrhizum is probably the most reliable ground cover of them all. It creates a low dense mass of aromatic hairy leaves about 30cm / 12 inches high. The flowers open in late spring and there are varieties in white,
pale pink or magenta. These are followed by bright red seedheads providing interest well into the autumn. Propagation is ridiculously easy. Simply rip up a clump of the thick creeping stems and push them into the ground where you want them to establish. Make sure they don’t dry out and you can be assured of success. If you’d like a plant with a bit of height go for Geranium psilostemon. This grows to about 1.5m / 5 feet. It has deep magent flowers with a black eye, and is a great self-seeder. If you struggle with a patch of denser shade I can recommend the blue-flowered Geranium himalayense, and also ‘Johnson’s Blue’. Both will form clumps about 30cm / 12 inches high. Whether you have a new garden which needs to be filled with colour, or an established garden with a few bald patches, plant hardy geraniums and you won’t be disappointed. started a revival which continues to this day. Running & Fitness Coach What running can do for people with Diabetes or those at risk of Diabetes
IS IT TIME FOR YOUR DREAM KITCHEN?
By Verity Wright, www.runverity.com
Stunning modern German Schüller fitted kitchens.
I wanted to share with you the health benefits of running and what you should know before you start a new running programme. What is becoming increasingly clear is that the sheer extent of the benefits of exercise are huge as research shows us time and time again how exercise can reduce so many life-threatening illnesses. Exercise can be seen as a wonder drug in that it protects us, it has none of the side effects of actual medication and there’s probably not a single organ in the body that isn’t unaffected by it. Recent research has suggested that by sitting more than eight hours per day has been linked to a 90 percent risk of type 2 diabetes. If you already have diabetes chronic sitting increases the likelihood of worsening symptoms, or the onset of heart disease. Armed with all of this information and public service announcements how do you start exercising? One reason someone might start a new regime is a cue to action and this could be a major life event like having a diagnosis of diabetes or borderline diabetic that makes someone realise that they are susceptible, for example to heart disease and so by taking a recommended action, they will avoid the negative health condition. Running is also a great form of exercise if you feel that you are not a sporty person especially if you have awful memories of compulsory PE lessons at school. The advantage of running is that you are in control of it as an individual, you can tailor any run to suit you. Running covers a lot of bases with how much positive impact it has on the body and the mind, your physical and joint strength improves, your stability improves, your lungs strengthen, you increase your bone density, it prevents high blood pressure, you boost your immunity, lose weight, increase confidence, improve your overall mental well-being and of course reduce the effects of diabetes. Running can improve your health and help with losing weight in a manageable way, there is no quick fix with running and as you improve it is immensely satisfying to watch the weight drop away, your body shape changes on top of being rewarded with you achieving goals that you may not have previously thought possible and running is an ideal form of exercise for people with diabetes as it helps improve the body’s sensitivity to insulin.

My top tips on how to start running:
Ground Floor 1, The Courtyard, Higher Ford, Wiveliscombe, TA4 2RL.
Before starting any new regime, you need to consult with your GP • If you have not exercised for a long time, start off by walking as walking mimics the same movement patterns that running does • Make some adjustments to your schedule for your new regime, this could be adjustments to meal planning, eating before and after you run • Turn your 20-minute walk into run/walk for 20mins • Identify landmarks that you are going to run in between, for example a bench to the 2nd lamppost • Each time you go out try and improve on how many lamp-posts you can run in between •
Slow your pace down, you don’t have to run quickly to reap the benefits of running, if you can’t talk you are running too quickly, even if you think you could walk quicker, just by having one foot off the ground you are running
• Visualise the impact that the new regime is going to have on your life • Set yourself a goal And enjoy feeling good. Why We Love A Royal Wedding By Tracey Anderson
tickets to The London Olympics, fly out to World Cup Finals, and lay flowers at the sites of tragic events. Shared History: The celebrations surrounding the Silver Jubilee, or the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana may have been part of our childhood. Maybe we attended a street party or received a commemorative coin. The desire to recreate and share these memories with our own children is strong. We love a party: Go on...who doesn’t love an excuse for a party? I have friends who throw Eurovision parties, and Strictly Come Dancing parties and X Factor parties, so why not a Royal Wedding party, complete with champagne and Union Jack cupcakes? Unless you have been living on a desert Island with no Wi-Fi for the past 12 months it cannot have escaped your notice that a wedding is scheduled for this month. Now whether you are a flag-waving Royalist or consider them to be a bunch of elitist parasites, you can’t avoid the discussions over the dress, the guest list and the entertainment booked for the reception. It was when I heard a colleague (who I know is antiRoyal) gleefully speculating over the dress-designer Meghan may or may not have chosen that it occurred to me to wonder why even the least sympathetic among us somehow get sucked into the celebrations.
They are not like us…or are they? We feel we know the Royals. We’re there for the births, the engagements, the weddings, the divorces. We know lots about them, but there’s always more we don’t know. It’s human nature to be hungry for more information or gossip about the rich, famous and (preferably) scandalous. A Royal wedding feeds into this, from the venue – the smaller St George’s Chapel rather than Westminster Abbey – to the guest list – who made the cut and who was snubbed. It’s like our own family but lived large…on our TV screens. And just as if they were members of our own family… we wish them well.
The fairy tale: Children’s stories where the handsome prince marries the beautiful princess are perennially popular, and the big white wedding is still the way many women imagine their big day. In this instance the prince in question is a real-life action hero too! A Royal wedding is the chance for us to live it vicariously, or conversely marvel at the spectacle of it all while muttering darkly about the cost to the public purse. Being part of something bigger: There is a strong drive among humans to want to feel part of something important or monumental. We want to weave historic events into our own personal history. It’s why we bought 28.
