One of the new events in our spring calendar is Somerset Day, which for those of you who don’t know, is on May 11th. I know that the people of Bishops Lydeard are great advocates of this event and organise a Craft Fair in celebration. As you drive down into Cornwall you will notice the amount of Cornish flags dotted about. In the hotel I stayed at they offered me a full Cornish breakfast instead of the usual English one. It seemed everything I purchased has the word ‘ Cornish’ in front of it. This is because they are proud to be Cornish, and they imply everything Cornish is ‘Proper’, whether it’s food, locally made gifts or a trip around the bay in a fishing boat. Yorkshire people have been doing it for years. Over the past ten years or so the people of Devon have realised this and are jumping on the band wagon. I see cars with Devon flag stickers in their windows, Devon flags flying here and there and a Devon pasty company winning the accolade “Best pasty makers in the West”. I bet that went down well in Cornwall! Somerset are just waking up to this. A few years ago it was decided that we should adopt this policy and have a ‘Somerset Day’ and chose May 11th. Many dates were looked at and decided that as King Alfred the Great ousted out the Vikings from the Somerset Marshes, it was as good as any. We have a wealth of historic sights and beautiful villages. We have fantastic foods and farming tradition. Last year my son and I took the Somerset Flag to the top of Dunkery Beacon (the highest point in Somerset) on Somerset Day. We went to as many businesses in West Somerset as we could sending out a Twitter post and photo from every location. Other team members did the same in other parts of Somerset. I know by the time you read our magazine the day may have passed, but why have one day? We can promote ourselves all year. Let’s get those flags flying, let’s put the word Somerset in front of our goods and services, let’s shout about the things that make this county great. Taunton Deane news I can hardly believe I am writing the second column for the year. As I look out of my window today I can see a lovely spring scene which is great and feels positive. This year promises to be a good one and starts with a range of exciting things happening. As mentioned in my last article we are moving the Coal Orchard scheme forwards and are making great progress on the design. We expect to be submitting our detailed planning application in the next month or so which, all being well, will see us building on the site in the late autumn. I think this will be an exciting development for Taunton which will add positively to the riverside scene in the area. This site will be the first link in the chain towards the creation of a new route up to the revamped station via the Firepool site. Significant work has been carried out over the last year to get all of these schemes into the build stage. As mentioned in my last column, this year we are supporting the Taunton Deane Business Awards. The deadline for entering is 30th March which is drawing close. So if you are a local business get onto www.tdba. co.uk and submit your entry. There are ten categories this year which include awards for manufacturing/ producer, customer excellence and start up business. We have great businesses across our area that fit these and all the other categories and we should celebrate their achievements.

On that celebratory note I spend a lot of my time, as you would expect, meeting with businesses and the organisations that represent them. In recent months there has been a general feeling that we all need to be more positive about what Taunton has to offer. The perception is that we seem to have a tendency to run things down and be hyper critical about what we have in the town. As we expand the town by building the Garden Town communities at Monkton Heathfield, Staplegrove and Comeytrowe we will need to support those areas with not only transport infrastructure but by strengthening the town centre. The good news here is that our town centre is actually in great shape in terms of retail and food offer when compared to other towns. We still have a good range of shops which is especially true with the independent shops that exist across our area. These are obviously in strong competition with internet shopping now but can still beat that experience by giving you a personal service when you visit them. We know there is still work to do on the physical environment in the town centre and there is ongoing work to look at how this may occur. This work in progress will be augmented by developments such as the Coal Orchard and many minor improvements across the area. Confessions
Last year, I wrote a column about financial confessions: admitting to the big money mistakes you’ve made or the things you don’t understand. It got one of the biggest responses I’d ever had. In the spirit of that column, I spoke to the team at Resolver, friends and family and asked them for their confessions about any of the services they use. The results were mind-blowing! One of my team (who I’m not naming) has worked in customer service for over twenty years. He called out the broadband engineer after a week without Wi-Fi. To his absolute horror, it turns out that the router connection was unplugged. His flatmate had taken the Christmas lights down and unplugged everything. The shame. Another friend of mine runs a pretty huge company and is one of the best-known and well-respected experts in her field. But she doesn’t know how to work her thermostat. In fact, she didn’t even know it had batteries in it until she called out the repair person. An expensive reminder to look at the instructions to say the least. A colleague who works in the insurance industry confessed to me that he never checks his bank statements. Which is why (after much badgering from his partner) when he finally did he found he had been paying for four separate mobile phone insurance contracts that his phone provider had ‘added on’ every time he’d upgraded. He got a hefty refund through Resolver too (he donated it to charity, I’m pleased to say!) We all had a giggle about the complaints we’d made that turned out to be totally our fault (and btw, you can use Resolver to pass on comments and thanks – and confessions – to businesses too). But there’s a serious point here. There’s no shame in not understanding something. In fact, we could save ourselves time, money and stress by admitting this and asking for help. For example, Resolver has launched a campaign to encourage people to learn more about their pensions, the biggest financial 10.
commitment most of us will ever make outside of a mortgage - and something few of us understand. I’d like everyone reading this column to feel that they can contact their pension provider and ask them to explain in simple terms how their pension works, how they can get a better deal and understand what options are available to them. It can be scary to ask questions like this. Which is why by admitting we don’t know as much as we’d like, we actually empower ourselves. Of course, pensions are just the tip of the iceberg. There are loads of things people don’t really understand the ins and outs of. Here’s a short list of a few of the most common ones, to give you a bit of inspiration to tackle the things that puzzle you the most:

Electricity and gas bills. All those extra sheets of information on the bills don’t make things clearer, do they?!
•
Bills, for that matter – particularly if you’ve ‘gone paperless’ and aren’t getting updates.
•
How much money you’ve paid off your mortgage, porting your mortgage and reapplying for interest rates as they go up.
•
Insurance premiums, how they’re set, when they renew and how to get a better deal.
•
Why complaint rules are all different, who is regulated, why can some firms get fined and others get away with ignoring complaints.

Hatch Beauchamp c 1905. With Nick Chipchase I went to see “Warhorse” on stage last year and being a sensitive fellow it made me sniff a bit. What a fantastic production. I don’t think that I could watch the film though. Poor “ Joey “. Well that got me thinking about an image for this edition. Something with a horse in. The postcard featured came from Ebay recently as an unlocated view. It was taken outside the post office at Hatch and features a tradesman holding scales. Possibly a butcher by the look of his apron. Britain had a million working horses in 1900 but by 1914 this number had dropped to around 25,000. Most were used for transport or in agriculture. The steady progression away from horse transport can be seen in Francis Frith’s postcards. By 1925 we see none on the streets of Taunton. Many trades were centred around the horse. Apart from hay and feed we see in Taunton in 1903 five carriage builders including L Whately in Haydon Road. Six carriers, seven cab proprietors ( Hansom Cabs were patented in 1834 ). There were also horse dealers and carriers whilst most villages had a smithy and wheelwright.. Also we had thirteen shoeing and general smiths, five saddlers and harness makers and five posting masters. Some hotels offered posting. The Castle Hotel offered “posting to all branches in good Landaus, Dog Carts, Broughams and Waggonetts. Careful drivers also omnibuses ( horse drawn ) to meet all trains.” H.W. Thomas of Silver Street supplied “ good job horses. Hacks and Hunters always on hand and well-appointed brakes for picnics and pleasure parties “. Hearses and mourning coaches could also be supplied. The London Hotel ( Later The County ) also had it’s own horse bus later to be replaced by a Napier motor bus. Hotels also offered good stabling for travellers and 12.
some like the London Hotel served as coaching Inns in older times. Look out for the remaining archways in buildings as these often denote a coach access. The London Hotel’s archway can still be seen by Waterstones bookshop. Stage coaches were so called as they travelled in stages with a change of horses at the coaching inn. In 1673 it took eight days to travel from London via Taunton to Exeter. The time improved over the next centuries until coaches averaged 12 mph with frequent horse changes and spare coaches along the route. Everything has it’s day and the coming of the railways in the 1830’s ( Taunton went “on line “ in 1842 ) put an end to stage coach travel. Just as horse buses displaced the Watermen of London so ships and trains displaced the cattle drovers of Scotland many of whom emigrated to America to become cowboys. Wheeled horse transport came in many forms. Carriages ( hence we have “ car “ ) came in at least forty types from “ Barouche “ to “ Waggonete”. Some soldiered on beyond the First World War like brewer’s drays and the big carriers carts. If any remain in living memory it might be the rag and bone man as portrayed in “ Steptoe and Son “. The term “ Mews” survives. Once this described a group of stables with accommodation above usually centred along a courtyard or long alley. We still use the term “ horsepower “. As for poor “ Joey “ ( miraculously he survived ) and his kin many were sent to the front to haul the heavy guns etc. The British army lost 484,000 horses and mules in The Great War. That amounted to one for every two men lost. Maybe eight million of these animals in total were lost in the war. By 1920 everything had changed and never again would horses serve to such an extent in war.

Behind the business Wiltshire Farm Foods With Peter Vine
now has seven vans on the road, and covers an area from the Cornish border to Taunton and Bridgwater. The business expanded quickly and has moved into smart new offices to keep the operation running smoothly and efficiently as it should be. Sitting in his office there is air of ‘family’ about the place, all the staff I met were very friendly and relaxed, which to me is a good sign. In this age of company websites and on-line processing we never the person we are dealing with. I used to know my local bank manager but now they have been replaced with an algorithm somewhere in the cloud. So, I thought it would be nice to visit one of our long-standing advertisers to put a name and face to the person who is behind Wiltshire Farm Foods down at South Molton in Devon. Peter Vincent is one of eighty franchisees who cover the UK. Peter, born in Birmingham. has been connected with the meal trade most of his life, and in 2008 was looking for a franchise to take on. Whilst the Club has a lively social calendar which promotes friendship among members there is also a strong emphasis on Service for others. During the time the Club has existed, members have raised over £500,000; been responsible for initiating the development of a local Abbeyfield Care Home (members continue to serve on the Trustee Committee); Taunton Opportunity Group (TOG) - another organisation where members are actively involved with the day to day management; and ran the It’s Child’s Play Project with the specific aim of raising funds for the Children’s Hospice South West.
The Club continues to work to assist local and international charities. Club members can choose to join a committee responsible for a particular aspect of Club activity. This could be the Programme, International, Youth Projects or Communications/Marketing to name a few. You can choose to suit your interests or broaden your horizons. The club is open to anyone to join. Although we meet every Monday you are not obliged to come every week. You can come as often as you can to fit in with your family, work and other social commitments. Some weeks are purely social, other weeks deal with Club business and other weeks we have a speaker. Fallen out of love? Should that be enough to get divorced? If you wish to get divorced in the UK you have to prove that your marriage has “irretrievably broken down”. You do this by filing a Divorce Petition based upon unreasonable behaviour, adultery, 2 years separation with consent, 5 years with no consent and desertion. In a recent case, a Petition was filed on the basis of unreasonable behaviour but despite the fact it stated there was no love in the marriage, and various other reasons, it failed. The other party said they still had years of marriage left to enjoy and the judge said that “minor altercations” should be expected in a marriage. The divorce was not allowed. On appeal, this was upheld. The judge said that even in a “wretchedly unhappy marriage” that is not a ground for divorce. This has now been appealed to the Supreme Court. Resolution, an influential body of family solicitors and other professionals, has been campaigning for “no fault divorce” for some time and will no doubt be very pleased by this further appeal.
Surely the fact that if you do not love someone, caused by their behaviour, albeit minor, should be enough to form unreasonable behaviour? Lots of people consider love to be the most important thing and quite frankly, why would you go to such lengths to stop a person divorcing you if they clearly wanted to that badly. George It was one of those rare days that it isn’t raining or blowing a gale, so I decided to have a wander around the park. When I got there, I met up with Pickles, a black and white tomcat. “Hello Pickles. What’s with the long face – you lost something?” I asked. “No, mate. Can I ask you a question? Do you think I’m unattractive?” “Why do you ask?” I replied, “You are as cool as they come. I’d give you an ‘eight’ anytime.” “Yeah, well… I’ve been trying to get the attention of a certain feline, but I don’t think she even knows I exist. Thing is, you seem to do alright on the female side.” “Leave it out, Pickles – I’m ginger for a start.” “Yeah, but you have status – being the top cat – so, the girls are all over you. Remember that time when that fox was terrifying us all, and you went out and killed it all by yourself…? When you appeared, dragging his carcass back up the park, you could have had your pick of any of them. Those girls were all over you. No way could I kill a fox to impress the girls like you.” “Let me tell you a little secret,” I said with a wink, “but you can’t tell anybody. That fox was running at full speed at me to take my head off and, as it crossed the road, a car came around the corner and ran it over. Otherwise, mate, I wouldn’t be here now.” “Really?” he asked, slightly disappointed. “Yeah, really. Anyway, I know plenty of girls who like you. Maybe you should come up with a plan to impress this special one with some bravado act.” “Good idea!” said Pickles, “Maybe we could stage a fight in her back garden and I take you out.” “If you think I’m doing that – friend or no friend – you have another thing coming. You’ll have to give it some more creative thought than that. Anyway, who is this lucky girl, then?”

Is she not…” I paused, “forthcoming…?” “Isn’t that. She never leaves the house – so I can’t even get introduced. I hang around for ages, but she never even goes into the garden, as far as I can see. I sit on the window sill for ages, and she just sits in the chair. Doesn’t even know I’m there.”. “So, find another one,” I said, always eager to help a friend… “There isn’t another one,” Pickles said, gloomily, “Not like her, anyway. She’s exotic… She’s got those almondshaped, bright blue eyes… and that beautiful coffeecoloured coat, all shiny and sleek…” “Yeah, I know what you’re saying – she’s Siamese. They come from Thailand, and these Thai girls are the homely sort – they never want to go out. But I agree with you. She’s absolutely stunning, always immaculate. Trouble is, mate, you have no chance.” Pickles wasn’t going to be put off. “But there must be a way to get inside the house. I just need five minutes to show her my affections. I mean, if she spurns me, well, fair enough – I just want half a chance…” “Now, Pickles, mate,” I said, carefully, “I don’t want to crush your affections for her… but, the thing is… she is actually a he”. “What?” Pickles stared back at me in disbelief. “Are you sure?” “Yes mate. Sure as eggs is eggs. It’s a well known fact around here – I thought you would have heard…” “Yes, but what about his…?” Pickles struggled to find a polite word. “Gone, mate. He was taken down the vets and…” I paused for effect, “Snip…!”

Running seems like a very simple sport in that you can put on a pair of trainers and just run; but sometimes running isn’t quite that straightforward and it can be the small things that ruin a run. Blisters Blisters are very common and even tiny blisters can be extremely painful. Blisters are caused by heat build-up from the friction of running, the skin becomes hot, it can separate, and this is when fluid fills the gap between the layers of skin. Anything that intensifies this friction can cause a blister. For example, having running shoes that are too big or too small, running in wet socks, running downhill, running a faster pace than normal or increasing your mileage too quickly can all contribute to the formation of a blister. Ignoring a blister can lead to bigger problems in the long term so treat the blister straight away. Keep the area clean, dry and protected by Investing in special blister plasters. Throw away any thin cotton socks and purchase duel layer blister free socks that are cushioned in all common friction points and treat a blister as if it were a damaged muscle or joint so take time off from running if necessary. Black Toenails
before you run, if you eat and then run you could still be digesting your food whilst running and this could cause the discomfort of a stitch as your food is not properly digested. The best thing to do is plan your day so that you fuel well at least 2 hours before you run, remember not everyone is the same so see what works best for you. You could eat a bigger lunch if running in the evening and then just have a snack an hour before you run but try a few things out. Make sure you also drink plenty throughout the day as fluid aids with digestion. Setting off too fast and not warming up can be another cause of a stitch so don’t go from standing to a full on run as this can cause short, shallow breathing, make sure you do a gently warm up first.
Most runners I know rarely show their naked feet due to the loss of/or blackened toenails. Losing a toenail can be quite painful and again you may have to take some time off running until any pain subsides. Most blackened toenails are caused by trainers being too small; if there is no space between the front of your trainer and your toenail, your toenail is being bashed into the front of your shoe, on average, between 80-100 time per minute; that’s a lot of force going on between your toenail and the front of the shoe hence the blackened toenail. Investing in correct fitting trainers and keeping your toenails short usually eliminates this problem.

Side stitches are very common amongst new runners and are very painful. The best advice is to look at what you are eating and drinking on the days you are running, make sure you do not have a huge meal just 26.
Cramp is the locking of the muscle in a sustained spasm which can suddenly cause a severe pain that in most cases is so intense it forces you to stop mid run. Luckily cramp is only temporary and the causes could again be dehydration, changes in trainers, overworked muscles or an inadequate warm up. Most minor ailments can be prevented by investing in a good pair of running trainers, a decent pair of running socks, eating and drinking well on your running days and by doing a

Friends of Lisieux Annual General Meeting at Flook House, Belvedere Road, Taunton at 7pm on 22nd March 2018
Last August French people from the Twinning group in Lisieux, Les Amis de Taunton, visited Taunton, staying in people’s homes, and there was a soirée in Monks’ Yard and a trip to Salisbury. Over the past year there were other activities for FOL including coffee mornings, walks and a Christmas meal. It is a friendly group. There will be an election of officers and a treasurer’s report at the AGM. The Twinning of Lisieux and Taunton is valuable and enjoyable because the people from the two towns visit each other’s homes which fosters friendship between the two towns and nationalities. A small group of members are planning to visit Lisieux this year which will coincide with the 50th celebration of the Twinning of Friends of Lisieux and Les Amis de Taunton.
