May/June events It`s been a really interesting few months for those with an interest in learning in our area. In March the University Centre for Somerset was launched which will be the first step in the establishment of a University for Somerset. This will bring a new focus for higher education into Taunton creating a campus on Wellington Road at the Bridgwater and Taunton College site. The new apprenticeship levy has also sprung into life and both our local colleges are able to help businesses to take advantage of the initiative. They have a range of training opportunities so please contact them direct for information. There is also a new Heart of the South West Apprenticeship Service, which is run by SERCO, and funded through European Skills funding, this is delivered by a network of local colleges, including Richard Huish. More information is available for businesses at hotswapprenticeships@serco.com I mentioned in my last article the discussions in the town centre around the urban environment. We are absorbing a great deal of feedback as we go along which will be harnessed when the trial closures of streets take place. Changing gear slightly, my team also supports an active events programme in Taunton working with a range of organisations to help them provide a wide range of events and activities. If you enjoy food we have StrEat Taunton on 5th and 17th May, 2nd and 14th June which will offer a selection of street food on Castle Green. A new Food Festival, Eat Taunton, will also be there on 12th and 13th May so please come along and see what is on offer.

We also have a trio of now regular events in Taunton coming up through May and June. The ignition button is pressed on 14th May with the ever-popular Vintage Bus Day - climb on board and enjoy the fun. This is followed on 11th June by charity fund-raising Dragon boat racing. The launch is from the landing platform near the Brewhouse Theatre. Completing the trio is Somerfest on Saturday 17th June, an allday festival which includes street performance and a whole range family-focused activities. On the sporting front Taunton hosts the England v. South Africa cricket on 23rd June which I hope local businesses really support to make the town buzz during the event. It’s already a sell-out but no doubt visitors Taunton will want to eat, drink and enjoy themselves while they are here. Finally we are counting down to the start of the Women’s World Cup Cricket Fixtures in Taunton. The trophy will go on tour on 2nd May with matches starting on 26th June and watch out for an event in the first week of July. Tea, a French Film night and also a garden party to celebrate Bastille Day. A small group of the members travelled to Lisieux for a long weekend in August with a soiree in a Cider Farm and a trip to a bell foundry. This visit was a very interested experience from just a holiday as the members stayed with French families during their visit.
Friends of Lisieux AGM March 2017
Members the Friends of Lisieux had their AGM on Thursday 16th March 2017 at the Deane House, Taunton with the Deputy President, Councillor Hazel Prior-Sankey.
Carol told of similar events planned for this year 2017. We will be hosting the French Twinning group, Les Amis de Taunton in our members’ houses from 26-30th August. There will be a restaurant meal and a visit to Salisbury with a visit to Wilton House and a Cream Tea.
The Deputy-Mayor said that she was pleased to be involved and was very interested in the group which was very active.
A member, Rosemary Sheppy, spoke of the sad deaths of founder members of the twinning, of Matthilde Watt, Muriel Watkin and Mrs Ricky Day in England and of Jacques Eon in France.

Mayor of Taunton Deane 2016/17 Cllr Vivienne Stock-Williams
A YEAR IN REVIEW
THE Mayor of Taunton Deane for 2016/17, Cllr Vivienne Stock-Williams, had a very productive year in office, attending over 500 events giving her support to a range of individuals and organisations. Cllr Stock-Williams carried out time-honoured duties such as presenting a teddy to the first baby born on Christmas Day and crowning the Taunton Carnival Queen. She also presided over civic occasions and official openings as well as taking part in parties and fundraising extravaganzas. Throughout her year in office the Mayor worked tirelessly for her chosen charities - the Children’s Hospice South West, the Somerset National Gardens Scheme and Reminiscence Learning. All the money raised through special events and generous donations will be split between them. Cllr Stock-Williams made inspirational and moving visits to all three hospices – Charlton Farm, Bristol; Little Harbour, St Austell; Little Bridge House, Barnstaple – during the year. She said: “They were oases of tranquillity where I learnt of the compassionate work staff and local volunteers do in caring for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families. I was also privileged to meet the founder, Eddie Farwell MBE, at the 25th anniversary celebration of CHSW.”

Cllr Stock-Williams started the CHSW Santa Run at Christmas and the Rotary Club’s 50/50 Cycle Ride in aid of CHSW. The Mayor enjoyed visits to spectacular open gardens at Court House, East Quantoxhead; the fascinating small garden with sculptures at Flaxpool; the historic gardens and arboretum at Nynehead Court; Elworthy Cottage Garden which is planted to encourage wildlife; and the romantic gardens at Cothay Manor. “Keen gardeners, who enjoy nurturing their gardens all year round, willingly take on the extra commitment of opening their gardens for everyone to relax in, thus raising money for charitable causes, contributing to the NGS apprenticeship scheme and benefitting their own and their visitors’ health and wellbeing,” she said. Cllr Stock-Williams pulled out all the stops for the Reminiscence Learning’s Archie Project which involves inter-generational dementia awareness work linking local primary schools with residential care homes. She took part in a duck obstacle race dressed as an inflatable duck to launch Archie’s Party, and in Archie’s Record Breaking Birthday Party in Goodland Gardens which aimed to enter the Guinness Book of Records with the largest number of human scarecrows assembled in one place. Cllr Stock-Williams also dressed in 1950s style to take part in Reminiscence Learning’s Christmas tableau in Hatchers’ window, which was much enjoyed by passing shoppers. Cllr Stock-Williams said: “I have been extremely proud to represent Taunton Deane Borough Council at so many events and special occasions throughout the year. It has been a fascinating experience. It was a real pleasure to accept invitations from such a wide cross section of the community. There is a lot of great work being done in the Borough that for the most part goes unrewarded.” Among the more unusual experiences during her year in office, the Mayor counts:

A tour of Shepton Mallet Prison organised as a local Mayor’s civic event, where she described the atmosphere as “cold and grim”.

A 24-hour table tennis marathon for Children in Need, organised by Prospects in Taunton High Street. “It was snowing as we played outside under a tarpaulin. To warm up, I was invited inside, where the Mayor of Street and I had a huge and very heavy Burmese python wrapped around our shoulders!” remembers Cllr StockWilliams.

An invitation from the Lord Mayor of London to have Afternoon Tea at the Mansion House to mark the 350th Anniversary of the Great Fire of London. This was hosted to thank those towns and boroughs which most contributed to the rebuilding of the City and the support of its residents affected by the Fire.
Cllr Hazel Prior-Sankey has taken over the role of Mayor for 2017/18 after being selected by fellow councillors at the annual meeting of Taunton Deane Borough Council. She is looking forward to an equally memorable year raising funds for her nominated charities which are Stand Against Violence and Hestercombe.

A new therapy practice, Equilibrium has been established near Taunton to provide a different form of therapy for people seeking emotional and psychological support – using the healing power of animals. Jenny Chesher is a qualified counsellor who has also trained in animal-assisted therapy and equine-facilitated psychotherapy. She has set up Equilibrium to work in partnership with her dogs and horses to support people therapeutically. Many people find interaction with animals a soothing and enjoyable experience. There is a natural tendency for humans and companion animals to form relationships, which is scientifically based on the nurturing instincts found in both species. The resulting interaction is proven to have a positive effect for people, with both long-term health advantages and immediate emotional/ psychological benefits. When combined with the skills of a trained counsellor or therapist, this connection can provide therapeutic benefits to people experiencing emotional pain or psychological distress. Jenny incorporates her two registered therapy dogs - whippets Rufus and Teasel - into her counselling, and their calm but friendly presence provides benefits such as: •
contributing directly to a client’s feeling of warmth and security to give them greater trust in the counsellor, facilitating a better rapport in counselling sessions

reassuring a client and calming them sufficiently to allow them to explore their difficult issues or experiences more deeply and for longer
• revealing a client’s underlying feelings to themselves and raising their self-awareness

• providing a safe opportunity for therapeutic touch and contact • providing an incentive for a client to enter into the therapeutic process Animal-assisted therapy can assist clients with goals such as reducing anxiety and stress, building trust, improving self-confidence and self-esteem, enhancing communication skills and the ability to express feelings, practising setting clear boundaries and helping to cope with loss and grief. It is particularly beneficial for people who struggle to express their emotions, have difficulty in trusting people or have experienced traumatic relationships, or just feel awkward conducting face to face therapy and want a more active form of counselling than sitting in a room. From her tranquil, rural base in the Quantock Hills, Jenny provides equine-facilitated psychotherapy outdoors with her two ponies Spirit and Tommy. This draws upon the remarkable ability of horses to connect with people’s deep-rooted feelings and gently reflect them back in a direct but nonjudgemental way that assists their healing and self-development. It is an experiential form of therapy which does not involve riding or require any experience in handling horses. Through the use of both active and reflective forms of interaction with the horse, equineassisted therapy can raise people’s awareness of self-limiting beliefs and behaviour and provide an opportunity to practice more healthy ways of communicating and interacting. Memories of Taunton - With Nick Chipchase Station Road, Taunton c 1903 This photograph shows Station Road in 1903. It was one of a set published by Wrench Ltd who published many well animated postcards between 1900 and 1906. We can be precise about the date because a placard is advertising the arrival of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show which visited Taunton in August 1903. Buffalo Bill (Col. William Cody ) toured the UK using four special trains carrying 500 horses and 800 people. The latter supposedly including 100 American Indians. The show took place twice daily at the “ Poor Grounds “ at the bottom of East Reach.
Boscawen, MP for Taunton. The buildings on the left side of Station Road still have their little walled gardens. The high and ornate standards supplied electricity to the tramway fleet and with the closure of the system in 1921 many were converted to lighting standards. Seen here is one of the original fleet of six four wheeled double decker trams supplied by the Brush Company. The system opened 21st August 1901 with free rides around the town for 2,000, people on two trams decked out with flags supplied by local store W.and A. Chapman, now Debenham’s.
At this time the Royal Ashton Hotel was a Temperance hotel and boarding house opened by Grace Ashton in 1869. The “Royal” addition took place some time between 1910 and 1920. The Temperance movement started in Taunton in 1833 with the formation of The Taunton and West Somerset Temperance Society. Coffee taverns and other Temperance hotels soon sprung up in the town. As a child my grandmother, Mabel Mutter, gave a recital to the Trull branch of The Church of England Temperance Society and Band of Hope.
Seen centre is an arc lamp and to celebrate the centenary of permanent electric lighting in Taunton a replica arc lamp was installed on the Parade in 1986. In reality the arc lamps were just as labour intensive as their gas lit predecessors as the arc gap had to be carefully adjusted and the glass globes regularly cleaned. Electric lighting was demonstrated on the Parade in 1879 and Taunton Rugby Club played Wellington by electric light at Wellington the same year. Easton’s new foundry at Whitehall was lit by electricity when it opened in 1882. Easton and Waldegrave’s steam generators enabled the Parade to be illuminated by electric lights in 1886 Taunton becoming the first town to have it’s streets permanently lit by electricity. Another electrical works were opened in Taunton by Francis Newton of Barton Grange.He arranged for electric lighting in Corfe church. Newton’s Rowbarton works in Taunton closed in 1934.
In 1903 Priory Bridge Road did not exist. There was just a narrow entrance to Canal Road with the gabled building being Tucker’s General Stores sited between the Royal Mail and the Crown and Sceptre. The building was demolished and Priory Bridge opened in 1922 after testing it’s safety with a 16 ton traction engine pulling a 40 ton trailer. The bridge was opened in October 1922 by Sir Arthur Griffith

At last the warm weather is on its way back and we have had some really nice days of late, so maybe it’s time to wander further afield. Let me think, it’ll be some time before the corn harvest will be in. That’s just the best time, hide in the corner of the field and see every rat, vole and mouse running away from all that noisy machinery. I just need some easy pickings. I’ll wander down the farm see what’s about. I stroll past the hay barn, best place for rats and.... nothing, then I glance up to spot a couple of owls nesting, well that explains the scarcity of any vermin. Now there lies efficiency, stealth, silent approach with night time vision, nearly as good as me. I leave the farm and make my way down to the canal, might be some pickings here, trouble is they do tend to scurry around close to the water and water is not my scene, great for fish, but not cats. “Ah yes, fish”, now here is a ploy I haven’t used for a couple of years. I know what you are thinking, how does a cat go fishing without the risk of getting wet ? It’s easy really you get some idiot to do it for you?”. I stroll along the towpath and sure enough there is a fisherman, now these people have stealth, impeccable patience but are desperate for company, not human company, that’s why they are fishing in the first place, but a cat ? I stroll over and test the water, no not the canal. I need to test to see if I’m friend or foe, some people hate cats so tread carefully M’boy. I approach with a ‘Meoww’, don’t knock the rod over, mind the equipment or you are dead. “Yes!” a stroke on the head, a scratch under the chin, I’m in !. He has one of those little tents so I make myself at home. “Hello puss, are you hungry?, he asks. Well I can’t tell him but I’m absolutely starving, I get up and “meow” a little more. Then he

makes a grab for his sandwich box and checks the contents. “Let’s see what I have for a nice little kitty”, he mutters,” Crisps…maybe not… egg sandwiches…noooo…chocolate biscuit… noooo….banana…..don’t think so, what about yoghurt” ? He takes off the lid and sticks it under my nose, please strawberry yoghurt is not my thing. Well it was worth a try I suppose. I was just about to walk away and he gets a bite, not of his egg sandwich but on his rod. He leaps up and reels in dinner, look at this fish, fresh roach, my prayers have been answered. But wait, he pulls up this net out of the water and there is loads in there and he drops his fish in to join the others. Yes M’son ! you’ve hit the jackpot. I sat there for two hours staring at this net, come just give me one. Cat’s like fish you dummy so pass one over. I ‘Meowed’, I stared into the net, what do I have to do. Then all of a sudden he’s packing his gear away, down goes the tent, rods taken apart and now he’s pulling in today’s catch, a whole net full of fresh wriggling fish. I don’t believe this, he’s starting to throw them back in the canal, what’s he doing, I’ve sat there for two long hours with the smell of egg sandwiches and now you’re throwing them back. Well I completely lost it, this idiot has spent all day trying to catch them, now he’s throwing them back, the man is off his head. Well I was off mine too, I leapt up and sank my claws in his bald head and clung on, he fell over backwards the net flying in the air and as it hit the ground there is fish everywhere. I release him from my death grip and make for the first fish I could grab and I’m off down the towpath like a rat up a drainpipe, so to speak. So if you go fishing and a cat turns up don’t offer egg sandwiches, just a tiddler will do.

What to do if they won’t listen.
By Sheryl Andrews: The Strength and Solution Detective, Author of ‘Manage your Critic From Overwhelm to Clarity in 7 steps’. We all love to be listened to, it makes us feel like we matter and not everyone is great at listening. So, what do you do if you can’t get someone to listen to you?
The mentor “An experienced and trusted adviser” A mentor is someone that listens to what you want and then shares their experience and tells you what worked for them or what they think will work for you.
First things first, what kind of listening do you need? In my book, I talk about 7 different kinds of listening. Today I would like to share just 3:
Now each of these skilled and trained listeners are often paid to listen and therefore they know in advance what kind of listening you want, and they usually have a contract to listen for 60-90 minutes at a time.
The counsellor “A person trained to give guidance on personal or psychological problems” My definition of a counsellor is someone you talk to about problems and it is usually relating to your past. The coach “A large comfortable vehicle for long journeys” A coach is listening and asking questions to move you forward from where you are now to where you want to be and it is very much solution focused questions.

So, please be mindful when you complain about others not listening – did you know what kind of listening you needed? Did you tell them before you started talking? And did you give them a time-frame of how long they need to listen? Or did you just start talking? I hope that sparks some curiosity about what you can do when others don’t listen.
