I do hope we bring you a little light relief in these gloomy times. As I talk to businesses I find some in dire straits, and others overworked. One optimist I met said, “I see these times as an opportunity”. I thought maybe he has the right approach. Maybe you’re employed, and always thought about running your own business. This could be the push you needed. Maybe you have a business, but have been forced to look at new ways of doing things. You may be knocked down, but get back up again. If you have been made redundant, there will be another job opportunity out there. If you can’t find one, then maybe create one. Never give up. Be resilient and creative. There is support out there. This events of this year has affected us all in one way or another. Be ‘mindful’ of others, a little kindness goes a long way. We are blessed with some beautiful countryside which is free to enjoy. Make use of it. A walk over the hills, or by the river. Being outdoors has great healing effects on your state of mind. Christmas is looming and I think the word this year is ‘invest’ and not ‘excess’. Invest time with your family and friends, the value far exceeds any bought gift. But if you are buying gifts, do it locally, you can build relationships with a shopkeeper, not with a computer. The season of goodwill. Keep safe and well.

REFUGE DISPOSAL - FOR THE TAUNTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
A Load of rubbish. No not my writing but actually what happened to the rubbish in Taunton c1880 to 1904. I love the images as they refer to ‘refuge’ instead of ‘refuse’. We in Somerset just can’t help that little slip. It’s seen again on a modern sign at Trull. From c1880 to 1903 refuse was collected by contractors except around 1875-1882 when the council thought that they could do a better job. The town was divided into three areas and tenders were invited for refuse collection every three years. The council made no provision for tipping sites as it was up to the contractor to sort out. The contract did state that no rubbish should be deposited within one mile of the town boundary. This was sometimes ignored by the contractor. With at least two contractors operating at any one time tipping places were numerous and were rarely used for a very long time. Consequently complaints were common. With 10,000 cubic yards of refuse being collected in 1902 the situation became a huge problem and the council opened a destructor to burn the refuse in 1903 (Illustrated). 4.
Between 1880 and 1903 landfill was the most common form of rubbish disposal. Any pond or pit and low lying ground was used for disposal usually until complaints put a stop to the nuisance. By far the biggest excavated refuse pit was at Bathpool. It had been dug to construct the embankment for the bridge over the railway line. A smaller pit the other side of the line was also used. In 1892 Bathpool pit took over 2,500 cubic yards of refuse. The site became a considerable nuisance resulting in a court case against the landowner George Leach in February 1893 . In 1892 two contractors or scavengers were working in Taunton. Henry Shutler worked the East and North Wards and Francis Purchase the West Ward. The scavengers were paid £150 per district in the 1880’s and they in turn employed “poor miserable wretches to do the work in the streets at one shilling and sixpence a day.” From items discovered in the pit we can see that the refuse came from the East Ward. A rough calculation would be that the Bathpool pit was filled within a year 1892 - 1893. With such
a precise date it has been an interesting exercise to completely excavate the pit and record everything whole and broken in it. This was all completed and the land reinstated only for it to be dug up again to form a large lake. Other sites excavated and recorded at Taunton were - A large pit in Staplegrove allotment. (a brickworks). A disused swimming pool at Fullands School (now redeveloped and possibly more landfill along the river when it was reconstructed downstream). The young General Gordan swam in here. A pond close to the motorway and another at Hankridge. Also a small pond at Killams though by far the largest undug site must be the old canal across the recreation ground at French Weir. This was filled up with all sorts of rubbish etc c1900 some of which was revealed when a main sewer was laid across it some years ago. No doubt other sites remain unfound though it is likely that they have been built on as the town boundary has expanded outward. Yes, I suppose even rubbish can be interesting!

Why Christmas is most definitely not cancelled With Jo Middleton
Father Christmas is magical and can go anywhere.) About a month ago though I had a bit of an epiphany. Yes, Christmas might be a little different this year, but I decided I wasn’t going to let a virus spoil my happiest time of the year.
I’ve been getting a bit down in the dumps lately about Christmas. Those of you who know me well may be shocked to hear this, as Christmas is traditionally one of my Best Times, but with the cloud of coronavirus hanging over us, it’s been hard to see how Christmas could really be the same this year. Media coverage hasn’t helped, with journalists everywhere telling me that Christmas is cancelled this year. Nothing is going to be the same, nothing is ever going to be the same, Father Christmas won’t be able to come because he won’t be allowed down a chimney and into your house without a special exemption etc etc (Okay, so maybe not that last bit, because as everyone knows,

Christmas markets might not have quite the same relaxed vibe, and there may not be carols being sung heartily around a roaring log fire, but damn it I want that overpriced market mulled wine and mince pie and I’ll hum Carol of the Bells quietly to myself behind a mask if I have to. This year I intend to go all out to prove that Christmas is definitely NOT cancelled. I’ve already been into Jane Armour Trading and bought myself an Edwardian town house advent calendar, (I may have had half a bottle of champagne at lunchtime that day and got a little carried away with myself), and I’ve been to Lakeland for my pillar advent candle. Nothing says Christmas like forgetting to burn your advent candle for three days at a time and then having to stay up until midnight one night while you catch up.
I was thrilled when Paperchase opened in Taunton - and absolute dream come true for me - and have already stocked up on cards and wrapping paper, and I’ve been wafting around the local independent shops, gathering gifts, which are all stacked up ready in the special ‘box for keeping Christmas presents in’ that I have under my bed. (I introduced a designated box a few years ago. Until then I would buy gifts throughout the year and hide them in careful places around the house and only find them again in January.) And then of course there’s a Christmas tree. Last year I went rogue and put up a tree on December 1st but this year I’m thinking why not just go all out and get the tree up now? The earlier the decorations go up, the more time there is to enjoy them right? In fact, sod it, I might just mull some wine right now. Cheers! Blogger of 10 years at Slummy Single Mummy. We are introduced to two police officers in DCI Chris Hudson and PC Donna DeFrietas and the pair are not ready for what they are about to get involved in. The four friends have a unique and determined way of obtaining information from the two police officers as part of their ‘private’ detective work.
Then there is Ian Ventham the owner of the retirement village who is only interested in making money and doing deals and his business partner Tony Curran who has a history of his own. This really is a very cosy typical British crime novel that is clever and with some very funny moments, with great characters you will love. Told in a style that will appeal to many readers. The good news is there is more to come.

Go for wines that complement a wide variety of food ingredients, and I suggest a decent Rhône – either red or white (or both). GARNISH Orange zest twist I really enjoyed this cocktail. Not over sweet like some, but neither so dry as to offend the taste of those with a sweeter palate. Multiple portions could easily be made in a jug, and ideal to serve before Christmas lunch for up to say 6 people.

To Paddle My Feet With Rita Sandford
We are all now aware of what a virus means when there is no vaccine to protect ourselves. This is how we felt back in the 1950’s when we had to live with the danger of catching the polio virus before a vaccine made us safe. There was no ‘Lockdown’ we had to carry on our everyday lives not knowing who would be the next person to catch the deadly disease. I was five when I caught polio in 1955 and was completely paralysed; my mother also caught the polio virus and had to go into an iron lung to help her breath. Sadly she passed away. My brother was slightly affected and my father not at all. We were all rushed to the Cheddon Road Isolation Hospital as polio was very contagious. The council quickly fumigated our house and sealed it putting a large white cross on the door and barricading the road. Everyone was frightened. I had to spend a long time in hospital while the physiotherapist worked on my arms and legs to see if I could improve. Polio attacks the central nervous system killing the
nerves which my brain would tell my arms and legs to move. Without these nerves working my body would not respond. Not all the nerves were affected and I slowly gained the use of my arms but not my legs. There was no local Orthopaedic Ward so I was transferred to Bath. Hospital life was harsh in those days Crying was a punishable offence and I went into solitary confinement if I cried. I was locked in the Gym one night for not eating my supper. It was a hard lesson for a five year old to learn, having just lost my mother and my father, who did not drive and lived so far away. Parents were seen as a hindrance and visiting time were limited and strict. Most disabled people in those times were locked away out of sight. The aim was to get me up and walking so that I would be accepted back into society.

I gradually walked using heavy full length leg irons and a spinal support which I struggled to do. I did mainly use a wheelchair for distance. I went home 15 months later, my father had remarried. Life was a struggle and I spent many months every year back in hospital. My education began when I was seven. The Local authority allowed one hour of home tuition a day. Despite this I was determined to live an ordinary life. I worked for 30 years, live independently, drive a van from my wheelchair, and went on many exciting holidays with friends. If you would like to learn more about my early life and how I achieved my dream, I have written my life story ‘To Paddle My Feet’.

This year, the global conversation has shone a light on the grave injustices experienced by black people, people of colour, disabled people and many other communities as a result of coronavirus, the national lockdown and the criminal justice system. As we continue to live with restrictions, we all need to continue to play our part and follow the Government’s three tier regulations to prevent the virus transmission increasing any further in our area. Please continue to follow the rules to keep you and your family safe as well as protecting the most vulnerable in our communities. As I’ve said many times over the last six months, please take personal responsibility; you might not feel you are vulnerable to the virus but other people’s loved ones will be. We know that the transmission of this virus can be rapid, so we have to work as a collective to stop coronavirus and put an end to its disruptive nature.
We all have a role to play and, if you witness such behaviour, it needs to be challenged. Please report the hate crime to the police to help officers ensure such incidents are prevented in the future. We need to ensure victims of hate crime have the confidence to speak out about the experience and access help. In Taunton and the surrounding local area, reported breaches of the regulations continue to be minimal and for the most part, everyone is taking their responsibilities seriously to keep themselves and others safe. Unfortunately aside from the virus, local people are still at risk of being a victim as criminals continue to exploit our communities. Recently, we have noticed a number of rogue traders,
fraudsters and scammers taking advantage of local residents. I would urge you to be alert to potential fraudulent calls over the telephone, on your door-step and online. Always remember, the police or your bank will never ask you to withdraw money or transfer it to a different account. They will never ask you to reveal your full password or PIN. If you think you have been a victim of fraud, report it to the police by calling 101. I’ve been speaking to the local Neighbourhood Policing Team
and they are encouraging local people to get involved in Neighbourhood Watch Schemes in your area. Despite the significant challenges of hosting football matches with a crowd (albeit restricted to a 600 capacity) in a pandemic, Taunton Town F.C have made great strides on and off the pitch. George Taunton’s Top Cat - the word on the street. I have just been out on my early morning patrol and have returned to the house for a bite to eat. As I enter the cat flap in to the kitchen, my Mummy carer is taking down all the things on top of the kitchen cabinets. About time too, if she could see the dust up there! I have a few munchies, and make my way into the lounge, whereupon I find my Daddy carer putting all their ornaments into cardboard boxes. What is going on? I run upstairs only to find the girls emptying all the junk in their wardrobes, and doing the same. Spring clean maybe? In November? Something is going on, and I don’t like the look of it. I go downstairs and watch from the sofa. Daddy carer is carefully wrapping items in newspaper and placing them in the box. “What shall we do with these”, he shouts, holding up a couple of broken picture frames. “Shall I remove the photos and dump the frames, or shall we leave it until we get in the new house?” THE NEW HOUSE! What is this! the new house? No, we are moving! What’s going to happen to me? my career? my position as top cat? They can’t do this! Where are we going? I’m not going, I’ll hide, I’ll stay here, I’ll starve, I’ll be on the streets. Oh! No. I have no say in this matter, all I can do is see the old gang, and say goodbye before we leave. I scoot quickly out and up the park. I bump into Blackie and tell him the news. “I feel it’s time Blackie to relinquish my position as leader of the pack, make way for new blood. I have to move on, I have been asked to take a new role, a step up the ladder, so to speak”. All the other members of the gang
have slowly started to appear. “Yes, my friends, my job here is done and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. I have been asked to take on a very important job, sometimes dangerous, that requires skill and cunning, but above all very secret. So secret in fact, I can’t tell you what it is. You must elect a new leader, someone strong, bold and above all wise, as I was”. They all look shocked and saddened by my departure, and each in turn thanked me for my term of office and wished me luck in my new career. I return to the house, by this time it’s looking a little barer than when I left. The following day I have been ushered into the horrid wire basket thing with a blanket placed over the top. I have no idea what’s going on. I can hear furniture been lifted by humans, puffing and grunting. I just went to sleep, not much point doing anything else really. Suddenly after several hours my basket is lifted and carried out. “Come on Ginge”, says my Daddy carer, “Lets get you into our new home”. I’m tossed about and finally put down and the blanket whisked off. What’s this? we haven’t gone anywhere! We’ve only moved three doors down the road! Oh Joy! What am I going to say to the gang after my speech about having a secret job. I best get up there before they elect a new leader. Oh no, there’s no cat flap, I can’t get out! “I think it’s best if we keep him in for a few weeks, so he knows this is his new home” says Daddy carer. WHAT!!!!!!

Donate your Winter Fuel Payment so Somerset’s elderly don’t have to choose between heating and eating. As we head into winter, many of us face an expensive – but essential - bill for heating our homes, while hundreds of our older neighbours here in Somerset are forced to choose between heating and eating. The coronavirus outbreak means that, for many older and vulnerable people, this winter will be even more difficult and worrying. Many will need to stay at home to keep themselves safe, and will find themselves cut off from family and friends, facing higher costs to heat their homes. A shocking one in eight households in Somerset live in fuel poverty. Thanks to the bright idea of one generous pensioner, hundreds of older people in Somerset are being supported to stay warm, safe and well every winter through Somerset Community Foundation’s Surviving Winter campaign. 30.
Surviving Winter encourages people who don’t need their Winter Fuel Payment to donate some or all of it to help local older people who are unable to afford to heat their homes. Every year Surviving Winter helps around 500 elderly people living in Somerset through the cold winter months, thanks to generous local donors who, last year, donated over £100,000 to Surviving Winter. Somerset Community Foundation (SCF) is taking part in The Big Give, and online donations made to Surviving Winter during the week-long Big Give Christmas Challenge - midday Tuesday 1 December to midday Tuesday 8 December - will be doubled. So, not only will your donation be worth twice as much, but even more older and isolated people across the county will get the support they need this winter. Volunteers needed to listen to children read in local primary schools after lockdown Can you spare an hour or two a week to listen to children read in a local primary school? Schoolreaders is a charity that recruits volunteers from the community to listen to children read in local primary schools. Our volunteers are needed more than ever before as so many children have fallen behind with their reading because of the school closures earlier this year. We are now looking for more volunteers in Somerset. Even before the pandemic, one in four children was leaving primary school not reading to the government standard. Children with poor reading skills face potential disadvantage at secondary school as they may not to be able to access the curriculum; as a result they can have restricted opportunities in life.

Government advice currently indicates that a cautious return to volunteering in schools in some areas is now possible. We are recruiting volunteers now so that when restrictions are further lifted, schools are prepared, and when volunteers feel comfortable going into classrooms, we are ready and able to provide reading support to more children. The scheme is flexible to fit in with a volunteer’s availability and location, although Schoolreaders requests a minimum of a year’s commitment. Volunteers get enormous pleasure and fulfilment in seeing the difference that their time makes in helping children with their reading and thereby increasing a child’s life opportunities.
