Happy new year! Our last issue marked a milestone as we celebrated 5 years of this magazine. We began small, with just 4000 copies on a monthly basis, but I could see the potential in it. I enjoy a challenge, so set to work on increasing our circulation. Today we print 30,000 copies every two months. Word Gets Around as a business started in 2011 offering graphic design, print and website services. My son Paul handles most of that side, with logo design, websites and printed material. We also run very successful business networking events in Taunton. In fact we celebrated our 8th Anniversary last October. I would like to thank all those who have advertised with us over the past 5 years and given us their support. I would like to mention our regular contributors too; Nick Chipchase, John Fish, Martin Straus, Jo Middleton, John Carter, Kevin Sturmey and Patric Maine. Oh, we must not forget Ginger George! In this issue we welcome Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens. She will be covering local developments in our community in terms of crime and safety. We were delighted to have launched our sister magazine in West Somerset last November. We print and distribute 14,000 copies into Minehead, Watchet and Williton homes. Somerset Floods With Nick Chipchase I was talking to my postman last week who lives at Athelney. As a consequence, I thought I would talk about this image. It shows William Upham repairing the breach in the River Tone embankment in 1929 at Athelney ( Curload ). During December 1929 much of the Taunton area was hit by heavy rain. Vivary Park and part of the town were flooded. Efforts to contain the River Tone finally failed and the river burst through in the early hours of the morning. Much of the area had to be evacuated and the local inhabitants made good use of the flat bottomed punts kept by for such emergencies. Sixty families were made homeless at Burrowbridge in the worst affected area. There were one hundred and twenty homeless families in the parish of Stoke St. Gregory.

A county relief fund was set up. Nobody died during the flooding but a railway worker fell into a ditch and drowned shortly after. The 1929 floods are remembered by an odd series of postcards whose images were taken from a punt travelling through the area. One shows Kathleen Boobyer in wellington boots standing by the breach with a torrent pouring through. This part was known locally as ‘The Sheilings’. We also see Athelney crossing, The Railway Hotel (later The Pigeons), Withygrove House and Ivy House. I have never seen a posted postcard so it seems that they were kept as a reminder of the flood. Taunton suffered severe flooding in 1960. In the last week of September heavy rain caused flooding in parts of Devon.
The rain later eased but returned in torrents during October. Two inches of rain fell on Exeter on October 26th. The rivers Exe and Tone took a huge amount of water and Taunton’s worst fears came to pass at breakfast time on October 27th. The flooding arrived at fast pace stranding vehicles and breaking shop windows in Bridge Street and Station Road. Much of the town below North Street including the market was underwater. Timber washed out of the yard upstream of the bridge and jammed under the supports. It was feared that the bridge would collapse. Luckily the Victorian engineering held fast. Floods came again in July 1968. I had a very lucky escape. That is another story.

Yep, it’s that time of the year again! No sooner have we swept the supermarket shelves clear of Ferrero Rocher and prosecco gift sets than we’re filling them up again with tat for Valentine’s day. Even when I’ve been in relationships I’ve never been a fan of Valentine’s Day. All those pink teddy bears clutching satin hearts to their chests and overpriced special restaurant menus. It’s not my jam. Besides, if it’s a decent relationship then do you really need to have just one day where you do nice things for each other? Isn’t that meant to be every day? Anyway, I’m single, so no satin heart bears for me even if I wanted them.

Anyone who chooses to train as a doctor is a rather special person and it is no wonder that I have come to regard Joanna Cannon as someone who has a big heart. This though is not all about the doctors on the wards but also about the patients. Some of the stories she shares are raw and intimate. There are so many stories from the wards contained in this rather special memoir. From the heart come the stories these people that Joanna Cannon as a junior doctor treated. This is thought provoking and compassionate. Joanna’s writing has always been from the heart and through these pages you will meet the junior doctor not the novelist we have come to know and love. Though at times this is upsetting it is also uplifting. What Dr Cannon also tells us is how the NHS is struggling and how we all need to take care of our precious NHS. When we need the help of doctors we head to hospital to be treated by the doctors, but at the same time we need to care better for the same doctors in the NHS that are treating us.

The pace of the novel is jaw dropping and the how the story moves back and forth as you meet those who are to take their own lives so you begin to connect with each of them. At times the story just makes your heart skip a beat as detectives work flat out to break the cult and find the ring leader, but is there one? This is a story of our modern world and cults that are out there. Will Carver can take the reader on quite a journey through his novels and in Nothing Important Happened Today you get a very dark and twisty thriller and how easily a mind can be manipulated.

Bath Green Park Station. The group was founded in embryo form way back in 1963 when we met in each other’s homes to operate member’s railways. Around 1970 we had premises in Sherford where our first model was constructed, namely ‘Tamerig Central’. This layout was featured in model exhibitions country wide winning many awards. When the West Somerset Railway was formed we were able to construct our own premises on Platform 1 of Bishops Lydeard Station that was opened in 1976. We then went on to build our second smaller line – ‘Bishport’. Then, around 1998 we had ideas to build our third model – ‘Bath Green Park’. This was to be an absolute dead scale copy of the original and was achieved using no less than 106 British Rail scale drawings. It was an immediate success winning awards all over the country. With that now behind us, our Tamerig Layout was scrapped and we are now embarking on a new project as yet un-named. So if any readers would like to join us, now is the time! We meet on a Monday evening at 7.30pm and look forward to welcoming you. There would be no membership charges for at least six months to allow you time to decide if it’s for you. We look forward to introducing you to a fascinating hobby. 10.

Welcome to my first column for Word Gets Around. For those of you who are not familiar with my role, I’m Sue Mountstevens and I am your elected Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Avon and Somerset. My role includes being your voice in policing, being the bridge between local people and the police and ensuring the Chief Constable and his team are doing everything they can to keep you safe. My work also includes setting the police budget and helping improve the criminal justice system to support victims of crime. As your PCC, I will continue to strengthen communities and ensure we are working together to make Avon and Somerset an even safer place to live. Only by listening to you can I be your voice in policing and it is important that local people know that they can influence how their police service works. I want to use this column as an opportunity to keep you up to date with what
With a new year comes the opportunity to reflect, take stock of the last 365 days and plan for the year ahead. I want to challenge you do try something different this year by volunteering for your local policing service. You could become an Appropriate Adult, an Independent Custody Visitor or a Special Constable to name a few volunteering roles.
Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding, the chance to try something different and an opportunity to meet new people. To find out more, visit the PCC’s and Constabulary’s websites. I recently spoke to Sergeant Charmaine Dyne about the work of the local Neighbourhood Policing Team.
Officers have been tackling County Lines in the area by supporting vulnerable people and targeting known offenders. The team has also been working with the force’s ‘Mini Police’ across three schools and activities have included litter picks, Christmas card designs with community cohesion as its focus and visits to care homes and Police HQ. The Safer Somerset Business Partnership (SSBP) is also well underway and is working hard to tackle anti-social behaviour
and crime that affects the retail sector in towns and communities through a range of initiatives. It’s a brilliant scheme that continues to help us effectively work together by sharing important information and prevent more people from becoming victims of crime.

I ended the last feature by mentioning my forthcoming trip to Spain to the Sherry District. Andalucia is the southernmost region including Cadiz, famous for its gastronomy, and past there to the triangle of the 3 Sherry towns – Jerez, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa Maria. Sanlúcar, on the coast is famous for its shellfish which are superb, plentiful and outstanding value! A local wine accompaniment is Manzanilla Sherry (from Sanlúcar) - one of the finest is Barbadillo’s Solear, which I found in Waitrose, Wellington. Once Manzanilla or Fino is open, keep in fridge and it should be consumed within say 2-3 weeks, as it loses its freshness. One week used to be quoted, but these days the technology has improved. I visited several bodegas, but one which stands out is Lustau, who make many quality wines. The variety of Sherry available in Taunton is far less than it used to be, but I can strongly recommend Wine & Dandy, Bath Place, where Hugh Elliott has just listed several Lustau sherries. To follow the Spanish theme, I’ll mention a longstanding favourite of mine, Lambs’ Kidneys in Red Wine, a good, hearty winter dish, which I first enjoyed 30+ years ago in a Suffolk wine bar. With this, a good Rioja Reserva, but many other wines are available today which will also go well. You need a full-bodied red, and a Rhône red such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, or a traditional Côtes du Rhône will also be ideal. There are several recipes online but a reliable and easy one is from Delia Smith - I make several portions and freeze them. Google www.deliaonline.com, click on “Recipes” and search for Lambs’ Kidneys in Red Wine. I add a few chestnuts and for the red wine in the dish I use an inexpensive but fruity Spanish red at around a fiver. Entry level wines will probably be from Campo de Borja in northern Spain and made from the Garnacha grape (the Grenache in France). Above all, remember that if a wine’s not good enough for your glass, it’s not good enough for your dish! And wines aged for a long time in wood may impart a woody note to your food, so young fruity wines generally work best and are cheaper! 14.

How can just 3 words find any precise location in Somerset, and the world?
Describing where you are in Somerset can be tricky. Postcodes cover large areas, many houses have names rather than numbers and, if you need help on a footpath, towpath or country road, it can be hard to give your exact location. UK technology company what3words has a solution. It has divided the world into 3m squares and given each square a unique 3 word identifier. ///winemaker.hillside.receive for example, is the what3words address for Dunkery Beacon – the highest point in Somerset. what3words can be used via a free mobile app or the online map at www.what3words.com. The app is well worth downloading as you can use it to find your current what3words address and give it to Somerset emergency services if you ever need to call 999. With just 3 words, they can find your exact location. Avon and Somerset Police were in fact the first emergency service to officially adopt what3words 16.
One local example is Taunton’s ‘Company Spaces’, which can be found at ///circle.dwell.moss. The three words can be typed, scanned or spoken into the what3words app, and then simply tap ‘Navigate’ to get directions to the precise location using Google Maps, Waze or your favourite navigation app. and now over 70 services in the UK have followed suit – including Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue and South Western Ambulance Service. In March 2019, what3words was used to locate a Somerset mother and daughter after their car left the road and landed on its side in a field. And what3words is not only for emergencies. Businesses around the UK are adding their what3words address to their website contact info and business cards, helping customers, guests and suppliers find them more easily.
The what3words app is also great for meeting up with friends in places without a street address – a point in a field at Glastonbury Festival, a fishing spot along a river or a favourite park bench. With 18 games played The Peacocks at the time of writing sit 4th in the Betvictor Southern League. Our last result saw us pip the Police with a seven goal thriller at the Cygnet Health Care Stadium. The Peacocks come out on top 4-3 against Metropolitan Police. (14th Dec). We need to keep building the crowds as the Town is growing and I need to keep foraging deeper in to the community to find new ways to get groups of people in our community supporting. As I keep saying I am never satisfied as the work and commitment we all give here needs more support from the local people, local Council and the business community. We have some ideas for next season which will allow me to spend more time “selling” the club in to our community. How the local Council perceive Taunton Town Football Club is key to our aim to get to the National League and ultimately Football League. They have backed Somerset Cricket over the years, rightly so in my opinion but they need to now show that level of support to us to allow us to develop and bring more in to the local economy than they realise at present. Rugby and Cricket is massively subsidized by their governing bodies, football is not. For the richest and biggest sport in the world more needs to put in place to help Non League football. But also Non League football needs to wake up first and help itself, see more below! I thought a lot of the problems in Non League were caused by the FA and Leagues, in some cases they do but having been in my Chairman’s role for 10 18.
years next July my opinion to that is changing! Having hosted the Southern League regional meeting a few weeks ago for 12 clubs I think the biggest issue is the clubs themselves or more to the point the people running them. The common denominator is old white males out of touch as in that meeting we hosted there was one lady out of 24 delegates! Our Board is run by people who are older but the difference is we realize you have to stay in touch with the world we now live in, it’s not going to go back to the 1970’s, 80’s or even 90’s. I’m all for tradition but it has to be modernised to keep up with the very different world we now live in. It will soon be 2020 and it’s time to wake up to change. I think all Directors/Committee should all pay to get in to grounds like the fans do and if I’m hungry or thirsty I’m happy to buy some food and drink at the clubs we visit. It costs clubs money the old fashioned way so let’s get rid of this outdated pomposity and wake up to the year 2020. The world is not going backwards!

Young composers receive support in 2020. Centre for Young Musicians Taunton (CYMT) has received a grant of £2,000 from The Michael Tippett Musical Foundation to help run a new programme in 2020 called ‘CYMT Young Composers’. The Centre will host a visiting composer for several visits each term and their role will be to support and work with young composers developing their own new music. Head of Centre, Rachael Parvin, said: “We are delighted to receive the grant from The Michael Tippett Musical Foundation as it will enable CYMT to support and develop young composers’ creativity in whatever style of music they are pursuing. There will be group and individual sessions and regular performances so this is a golden opportunity and one we hope many of our young musicians will seize. We offer composition workshops for students aged 8 – 18 of all abilities and these lead to exciting world premieres each term. George Taunton’s Top Cat - the word on the street. I was a good cat over the Christmas period. I didn’t attempt to climb up the play tree with the shiny things, although all the needles fell out after two weeks and I’d not even sniffed the turkey. In all I’ve been a wellbehaved cat. Okay, I did attack the toilet roll again. Well they should hang it the right way. Once it unfolds it just keeps rolling on its own. Oh! and I went to sleep in the bath leaving footprints everywhere but apart from that, I have been a good cat. So why have I been fed budget food again and no crunchy biscuits? It’s punishment for something. But what I have done? I have no idea. All I know is this means retribution. I need to come up with a plan and make sure I leave no incriminating evidence. I mean the toilet roll could have been anyone but they knew it was me somehow. A few days past and as I’m strolling down the stairs the ideal opportunity arises. My Daddy carer had gone off to work, the kids have gone to school and this
just leaves Mummy carer in the house. She’s not long got out of bed and still wearing her thing, a onesie they call it. It’s pink and it makes her look like a pig with two pink ears and a wiggly tail at the back. It’s just breaking light outside and she made a quick dash to the car to retrieve something from the car, yes dressed as a pig. She grabs the car keys and makes a quick attempt to dash inside. Now I happen to know that the bunch with the car keys on does not have a front door key on them and as I came down the stairs I just happened to accidentally nudge the door shut and proceed to the settee for a snooze. In less than a minute there is banging at the door. Then her troubled face is looking through the window, “Hello Mummy-kins”. Two minutes later I see her again scaling the back fence as I also know the back gate is locked also.

In desperation she has a ladder propped up against the back of the house and hoping at least one window is open, but to no avail. To make things worse, the woman who lives to our adjoining garden is filming her on her phone from her bedroom window. It appears that she went to get her phone from the car and rang Daddy carer who had to drive all the way back from work to let her in after taking shelter in the freezing cold shed for the past three-quarters of an hour. The trouble was, she was so flustered when she did get in she forgot to feed me at all. I had to nip down to Mrs Harris’s, (old lady lives on her own) and caught her putting out her washing. A quick nudge against her elasticated stockings and loads of purring and I’m in her arms and taken in the kitchen for a plate of tuna.

This is an instant classic, full of twists and skulduggery and a huge dollop of humour. All the usual ingredients; the mysterious death,the house, the family, the will, whodunnit, the sleuth. Deliciously revealed as the plot goes on and keep you guessing right to the very end.
The Good liar 8/10 If you like your thrillers with all the usual ingredients that keep you guessing this is the one for you. Great acting, great plot, brilliant script, twists, keeps you guessing, hustle, hustled and hustler, dirty rotten scoundrel, great location and drone shots and recreation of war torn and post war Europe. A film that keeps your interest right through to the end.
Last Christmas 10/10 16 years after the Christmas masterpiece LOVE ACTUALLY the directorial debut of Richard Curtis comes an equally exceptional film. There are so many positives but honestly if you like ROMCOMS you’ll love this. The locations chosen were amazing and the back story of Brexit and immigration were on point with the current politics. The use of London, the integration, the beauty of us all sharing this earth together, looking

after one another - people getting on regardless of class creed or colour all gave a positive feel about a film set at this time of year around family and acceptance of change.
Midway 5/10 Let’s start with the good stuff - the cgi and POV action shots were amazing. The bad stuff - the script was awful :( the main protagonist was a stereotypical American hero. It attempted to show both sides. It gave sympathy to those who die for ones country, whether that country acts right or wrong. Don’t expect too much.
Sorry we missed you 10/10 If you watched ‘I, Daniel Blake’ and cried this film will make you too. Welcome to Brexit Britain - this hard hitting kitchen sink drama tells the story of the reality of trying to work at the bottom of the pile while doing everything possible to support your family with the whole system stacked against you. The mise en scène, make up, lighting and wardrobe were excellent - you cannot help but be sucked in and feel sympathy for the protagonist and his family, as they try their best against everything that’s designed to make them fail. It might make you think twice about ordering a parcel or two online and get out to the real shops and speak to real people which is a good thing.
