THE COLLECTION OF THE LATE AUSTIN WORMLEIGHTON

Samuel John Lamorna Birch, RA, RWS (1869–1955) was a British landscape painter closely associated with the artistic communities of Cornwall. Born in Egremont, Cheshire, Birch spent much of his early childhood in modest circumstances following the death of his father. His mother moved the family to Manchester where Birch began to show an early aptitude for drawing, despite receiving only a limited formal education.

Birch initially trained as a clerk and worked in cotton mills but he pursued art with determination, enrolling at the Académie Julian in Paris during the 1890s. There, he absorbed influences from French Impressionism, working en plein air and developing a sensitivity to light and atmosphere that would define his mature work. His time in France was crucial in shaping his painterly approach, encouraging looser brushwork and a brighter palette than was typical in British art of the period.

In 1895, Birch settled in Lamorna Valley in Cornwall, a location that would become central to both his identity and artistic output, so much so that he adopted ‘Lamorna’ as part of his name. He became associated with the Newlyn School and Birch’s style combined Impressionist techniques with a distinctly British sensibility, characterised by vibrant colours, textured brushstrokes and an emphasis on the play of natural light.

His subject matter focused largely upon the Cornish landscape: sunlit valleys, rugged coastlines, sparkling streams and pastoral scenes. Unlike some of his contemporaries, Birch often emphasized decorative qualities and emotional resonance over strict realism, creating works that feel immediate, lyrical and personal.

Birch achieved considerable success during his lifetime, becoming a member of the Royal Academy in 1934. His legacy in popularizing the Lamorna Valley as an artistic hub and in bridging British and French painting traditions in his own distinctive idiom cannot be overestimated. Today, his work is remembered for its celebration of light, colour, and his great love of the enduring beauty of the Cornish landscape.

Austin Wormleighton (19372019), wholly synonymous with Birch expertise and a distinguished historian of the Newlyn artists, wrote the definitive biography about Birch, ‘A Painter Laureate: Lamorna Birch and his Circle’ (recently republished by Whitefox Publishing, 2025). This readable but learned account of Birch’s life shows Austin’s skill at lucid narrative (derived from a career in journalism) and his evident admiration for the artist’s oeuvre. Austin’s support of, and contributions towards, many exhibitions of Birch’s work brought him into contact with likeminded enthusiasts. He will be fondly remembered for his gentle, affable demeanour; his profound knowledge that was always lightly worn; and for his passionate love of Birch’s work.

Many of these works by Birch were included in the exhibition Lamorna Birch: A Painter Laureate at Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Penzance (October 2025January 2026)

Literature:

Austin Wormleighton, A Painter Laureate: Lamorna Birch and his Circle (Whitefox Publishing, 2025), illustrated p.37

This early study was one of the last pictures signed ‘S. J. Birch’. Birch was soon to leave Cornwall for studies in Paris and when he returned in 1896 he had adopted the additional name of ‘Lamorna’ in order to distinguish his work from that of another artist, Lionel Birch (Fl.18981916). Thereafter his pictures were signed ‘S. J. Lamorna Birch’.

This picture shows a scene in the Vale of Trevider, close to the artist’s home. The pool was a breeding place for wild duck. The Birch children were taken here for picnics, nature rambles and for sketching wild flowers, frogs and butterflies. Birch’s elder daughter, Mornie, recalled that the pool was especially memorable for the clumps of oversize flag irises growing at the water’s edge.

In June 1953, Birch and his wife joined a family cruise along the West Coast of Scotland with their elder daughter ‘Mornie’, their soninlaw James Lennox Kerr and their grandson Adam. Lennox Kerr had converted a former ship’s lifeboat into a motor cruiser and described a story of that journey in a book, Cruising in Scotland, illustrated by Birch. Kerr said that Birch had discovered the loveliness of Loch Riddon when they had anchored there for repairs. Kerr also adored the place and wrote, “The rocks on the port hand drop sheer into the water below thickly wooded hills, while on the starboard bank the country is like cultured parkland.”

Mornie Kerr and Adam (aged two) are the two figures in this picture.

The picture was purchased at the RA in 1945 by Sir George Etherton, one time Lancashire County Solicitor, and it passed by descent within his family until it was acquired by Austin Wormleighton in 2011. Sir George had kept dutifully the catalogue and correspondence with Birch and those papers are offered now with the picture. A slip of paper in Birch’s hand gives the artist’s own title as ‘February: In My Garden, Lamorna’.

The subject depicts the stream by the artist’s studio in the Lamorna Valley, just 1⁄4 mile from the sea. The studio was the favourite of the four that Birch had used within the valley as it was close enough to running water for him to fish for trout whenever he wished. The family home, Flagstaff Cottage, can be seen through the trees beyond.

ATTRIBUTED TO BENJAMIN CROFT EVANS

18761958

Self Portrait of a Young Artist, HalfLength, wearing a Dark Suit and Holding a Palette and Brushes

Oil on canvas

68 x 56.5cm

This portrait had previously been thought to depict Philip Wilson Steer. However, a comparison to a contemporary photograph of Steer suggests this must be a misidentification. An intriguing hint as to the origin of this error can be found in photograph of Augustus John, Ambrose McEvoy and a third sitter, previously thought to be Steer, but who is now believed to be Benjamin Croft Evans (National Portrait Gallery, London, no.NPG P1830). The photograph of Evans seems to show a close resemblance to our sitter

SIR STANLEY SPENCER, CBE, RA 18911959

Study: probably for Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta (19539)

Oil and pencil study on card, pencil study verso, possibly for ‘The Resurrection of the Soldiers’ (Burghclere Chapel, 19278)

Unframed

Provenance:

Dreweatt’s, Newbury, Modern & Contemporary Art, to include Kindred Spirits - The Artistic World of Sir Stanley Spencer, 10 July 2025, part of lot 109

From 19511953, Spencer worked tirelessly on studies and ideas for his ambitious final work. The low pink riverbank may be a reference to the one at Bellrope Meadow behind Holy Trinity Church in Cookham and is also to be seen in ‘John Donne Arriving in Heaven’ (1911, Fitzwilliam, Cambridge). Various compositional elements such as the figures on the riverbank, those punting, seated and in deckchairs hint at a Regatta theme. The standing woman, her dress gathered at the knee, appears to refer to a similar figure in ‘Listening from Punts’ with a group behind her that may be Christ with disciples.

We are grateful to Dr Amy Lim, Curator of the Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham, for her kind assistance with the cataloguing of this lot.

Agnew’s 1982-1992 (London, 1992), p.196, 203, pl.183

Henri Matisse ’ s Grande Odalisque à la Culotte Bayadère is his most important and sought after lithograph. He focused on lithography in three distinct phases in his career, 1906, 1914, and lastly in the 1920s, and this extraordinary print, dating from 1925, is the culmination of his work in the medium. The subject is Matisse’s favourite model, Henriette Darricarrère, in the guise of an odalisque, sitting with one leg raised and tucked under the other. It was a pose that fascinated Matisse during this period, appearing in many of his paintings and prints. The image is full of striking contrasts of textures and surfaces, such as the bold stripes of Henriette’s trousers, the heavy floralpatterned cloth of the armchair, and the smoothness of the model’s skin. Across the whole work Matisse explores the play of light, with the rich tonal effects enhanced by the lithographic medium, not unlike that of a charcoal drawing, and which contributes to the sensuality of the pose. Grande Odalisque à la Culotte Bayadère represents the zenith of his work in lithography; the epitome of the exoticism and voluptuousness that is expressed through his numerous depictions of Odalisques; and a testament to the inspiration he drew from the longstanding collaboration with his foremost model.

This impression was originally purchased from Matisse by the American artist Leon Kroll, who was studying in Paris at the time. In his memoirs Kroll recalls spending an afternoon with Matisse whilst he was working on the stone of the Odalisque. Matisse complained that “I can’t get a firm line on this stone. It’s terrible”. Kroll advised Matisse to grind the stone to a smoother surface, saying “Your stone is too rough”, and clearly the advice was effective.

Still Life with Flowers

Ivon Hitchens once said 'I love flowers. I love flowers for painting...One can read into a good flower picture the same problems that one faces with a landscape, near and far, meanings and movements of shapes and brush strokes. You keep playing with the object' (Alan Bowness (ed.), Ivon Hitchens, Lund Humphries, London 1973, p.13.). Flower paintings perfectly showcase Hitchen's skill, as they combine strong vibrant colours with deliberate and unified compositions, executed in his unmistakable bravura technique.

Painted in 19623 The Gateway shares similar subject matter to other Burra works of this period, for example The Fountain and The Tomb, in which Burra has depicted figurative statuary. Burra’s love for the unusual and macabre is apparent in these works as the figures seem almost lifelike but are nonetheless trapped within the lifeless stone. The figures and the bull recall motifs within Picasso’s Guernica (1937), the sinuous forms here both static and energised.

48.2 x 25.4cm

Provenance:

The Lefevre Gallery, London, where purchased by Anthony John Lippitt c.2000; The Collection of the late A J Lippitt

Burra’s fondness for Mediterranean mala vida is apparent here. From 1933 onwards, he had a particular penchant for the vibrant and invigorating atmosphere of Spain but he preferred to seek out its seedier backstreets. Coupled with a love of the language and his own perceptive skills of observation, Burra was able to devise his watercolours almost from memory.

This subject shows the singer performing and the bright palette complements the fiery Spanish passion of the scene. The artist's love of the sinister and macabre is shown in the singer’s despondent appearance which contrasts with the tawdry glamour of her setting. Burra shared his love of these sleazy clubs in a letter to Paul Nash (1933): ‘Barcelona was lovely nothing but music halls and bars and cinemas … they did some lovely dancing with castanets however in daintie spanish costumes of black transparent net with diamonte embroidery (over the parts) [sic]’

Oil on board, 1949

24.8 x 37.4cm

Provenance: The Artist; Collection of Raymond Bantock; The Waddington Galleries, London; Purchased from the above by the father of the present owner; And by family descent

Literature:

Hilary Pyle, Jack B. Yeats: A Catalogue Raisonné of the Oil Paintings, p.876, no.967

Painted in 1949, The Plains of Mayo, exemplifies Jack Butler Yeats mature expressionistic style, when he created some of his most sought after paintings. Painted at the apex of his career, it demonstrates how he broke away from the confines of line, to create a dynamic scene full of swirling movement and thick impasto, with figure and landscape merging into one another. Typically the fluid, instinctive brushwork is enhanced by a rich variety of colour, and the work embodies Thomas Rosenthal’s view that “the 1940s gave us a series of paintings in which the artist’s vigour in terms of colour and composition seemed to grow ever more powerful”.

The title of the present work may be a reference to the famed Irish poet and fiddler, Antoine Ó Raifteirí (17841835), sometimes known as Anthony Raftery. Blind since childhood, Ó Raifteirí was an itinerant performer in an ancient tradition. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries people started to

publish and translate his poems. Indeed Yeats illustrated a translation of Ó Raifteirí’s County Mayo by Padraic Colum (18811972) for his poetry pamphlet A Broadside in May 1912, which contains the lines “I solemnly swear that the heart in me rises/As the wind rises up and the mist breaks below;/When I think upon Carra and Gallen down from it/The Bush of the Mile and the Plains of Mayo”.

JOHN BROMFIELD ‘BROM’ GAY REES (19121965)

John Bromfield ‘Brom’ Gay Rees was born in Llanelli in 1912. Aged thirteen, he won first prize in Drawing and Design in the Junior section (under 17) at the National Eisteddfod. At fourteen he attended the school of Art and Craft in Llanelli, where the Principal D.E.H. Pratt ARCA encouraged him to enrol at the Royal Academy Schools in 1932. He was bright and gregarious at that time, proving to be an intelligent student with a lively personality. However, in 1935 Brom underwent a sinus operation and soon afterwards suffered a life threatening grand mal epileptic seizure. Ever fearful of a relapse he became increasingly agoraphobic and dependent upon barbiturates. He lived under the care of his sisters and his cloistered situation, compounded by ongoing ill health, made Brom taciturn and increasingly nocturnal. His former conviviality gone, the artist remained practically unknown to the general public during his lifetime. His style shows the influence of Synthetic Cubism (notably Picasso, Braque and Gris) following a single brief visit to Paris in 1948 but the lowkey and informal subject matter reflects his isolated lifestyle. At intervals he was urged to show his work. He would always reply with insistence that he was ‘not ready yet’ although some pictures were included in an Arts Council touring show of Contemporary British Painting in 1951. He died of lung cancer in Brompton hospital, aged 53. There was no major exhibition of his work until a show at the Michael Parkin Gallery in London in 1989.

THE COLLECTION OF JOHN ACTON OBE

John Acton OBE (1932 2017), was the British council’s representative to Delhi in the mid to late 1960s. It was there that he and his wife Joy hosted Howard Hodgkin who painted Mrs Acton in Delhi and a portrait of John and Joy Acton entitled The Terrace, Delhi.

From the late 1950s, and throughout the 1960s, he was involved in the London art scene where he was friends with David Hockney, Eduardo Paolozzi, Bernard Cohen and others. Throughout his career with the British Council he welcomed artists to the countries he was posted to, including a visit to São Paulo by Gilbert and George, in the early 1980s. He was made Deputy Controller of the British Council's Art’s Division and Director of the Music Department in 1980.

ARTIST’S RESALE RIGHT / DROIT DE SUITE

Lots marked with a symbol are poten ally subject to a levy.

Droit de Suite is a royalty payable to a qualifying artist or the artist’s heirs each time a work is resold during the artist’s lifetime and up to a period of 70 years after the artist’s death.

Royalties are calculated on a sliding percentage scale based on the hammer price excluding the buyer’s premium. The royalty does not apply to lots selling below £1,000 and the maximum royalty payable on any single lot is £12,500.

It is the responsibility of the bidders to ensure that they are legally authorised to acquire the lot that they are bidding for. In the event that such a lot is successfully bid for by an individual who is not authorised to possess it, that individual will be required to pay for it, but will not be allowed to take physical possession of it. The auctioneers will re offer the lot on behalf of the buyer in a future auction; or may accept instructions to dispose of it by some other legal means, at their discretion.

VALUATIONS

Valuations are a core part of our business and are usually carried out by a senior specialist or director. Accuracy, speed and above all confidentiality are paramount.

INSURANCE VALUATIONS

Written valuations for insurance can vary from a single item to a large estate. Before starting we discuss the various options available so that the valuation is specifically tailored to individual clients needs.

For valuations of an entire house contents an itemised bound valuation is produced and can be accompanied by photographs when required. In addition to providing an inventory, written valuations can prevent painful arguments with a loss adjuster in the event of a claim.

Woolley & Wallis valuations are accepted by all leading insurance companies.

PROBATE VALUATIONS

We offer a speedy and professional service for executors and trustees and provide bound valuations for probate and duplicate copies when required. Since security is often a consideration, we can usually arrange for a house to be cleared and sent for auction, our Valuations Department ensures that executors are informed of which sales are involved and the results thereof.

We also carry out valuations for Family Division, Capital Gains Tax, and Private Treaty Sales.
