Leonard Simpson; And by descent Literature: Wendy Baron, Sickert: Paintings and Drawings (Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 2006), p.379, no.365.4 Wendy Baron dates the present work to c.1912-1913, and notes that ‘This swiftly penned study is of the same upright format and size as the etching [Bromberg 153]. Mrs [Rowley] Bristow, as Florence White a pupil of the artist at Rowlandson House, told [me] that Sickert made many versions of this subject (figures watching or waiting while a funeral passes in the street below), altering the figure groupings at will.’ £1,000-1,500

Provenance: Property of a deceased estate The artist first went to see Pirandello’s play in the company of his artist friend and protegee Sheila Fell in 1963. It had a deep impact upon him and Fell recalled that Lowry returned to the theatre ‘twice more with me, many times on his own.’ Lowry was intrigued by the ‘small girl in it, with her long dark hair’ and he ‘talked about it endlessly, analysing it, wondering at it.’ The play explored a world of isolated and solitary individuals, with an admixture of sentiment and cynical humour. The characters dressed in black seemed to strike a particular chord with Lowry and his observant eye for tormented, eccentric individuals found much to explore within the production. £6,000-8,000

She initially explored three poses, one of Gandhi standing, one of him walking, and the final one offered here, sitting cross-legged, a pose she described as “traditional and intimate, suited to the small but beautiful [Tavistock] square”. Once a pose had been decided on, Brilliant created a metal armature, the first maquette (the present work), the second maquette (sold in these rooms, 5th June 2019, lot 44, £65,000), before the final figure, one and a half times life size. £6,000-8,000
