Not all images are lifesized, and weights and measurements in the catalogue are approximate only. It is common practice for coloured stones including jade to be treated to enhance their appearance. Pearls known and guaranteed to be cultured or natural are described as such in the cataloguing. Where the origin of a pearl is unknown and not guaranteed, it is described simply as a ‘pearl’, and it will be specified in the cataloguing as untested. Pearls described in this way are guaranteed to be pearls and not simulants, but their origin is not guaranteed as either natural or cultured. Items described as ‘seed pearls’ have also not been tested and cannot be guaranteed as natural pearls.

All diamonds included in this sale have been tested using a specialist device that detects lab­grown diamonds.

Any dispute as to the authenticity of a lot, including signatures, age and condition, and as to the treatment of gemstones including pearls, synthetic diamonds and HPHT enhanced diamonds, must be brought to the attention of Woolley and Wallis within two weeks of the sale date. The Hon. Hugh Elliot was a diplomat and Governor of Madras from 1814 to 1820. He brought the bangle back from Madras. He was the younger brother of the 1st Earl of Minto (1751­1814), who was Governor­General of India from 1807 to 1813.

Found near Brunton Abbey, Somerset, 2022. Submitted to Salisbury and South Wiltshire museum and qualified as treasure (treasure and tracking number 2022T1235). Salisbury Museum pointed out that Brunton Abbey was Augustinian which opens an argument that the saint incised on this ring could be Augustine or Joseph, protectors of the order.

This portrait is similar to the coronation medal designed by John Roethiers (1631­1703) for William and Mary in 1689 as the chief engraver at The Royal Mint

From humble beginnings, Edward Burch became one of the most celebrated gem engravers of the late 18th century. He was made Royal Academician for the Royal Academy in 1771, at which point his signature included 'R.A.'. In 1795, he produced his 'catalogue of 100 gems' with 100 plaster casts of his better known intaglios which includes cast XV from the identical William III model. A set is held at the British Museum (Museum number 828553001) and at the Sir John Soanes Museum, Lincoln’s Inn Fields (Museum number DR11)

He exhibited at the Royal Academy a few years later, in 1770.

His career blossomed when, together with his brother Charles (1749­1795), they received a decade of patronage from Empress Catherine II of Russia. They then met King Louis XVI in Paris in 1788 but had to return to London the following year due to the Revolution. Royal patronage continued, however, with the Prince Regent (1726­1830).

Born in Naples, Costanzi soon acquired celebrity in Rome as a fine gem engraver and mastered the extraordinary talent of carving diamonds, the hardest of all gems. His patronage extended far and wide and he is believed to have engraved a gem depicting Antinous, a favourite subject, for the King of Portugal. Another similar 18th century intaglio of a bust of Antinous is held in the Royal collection having been acquired by King George III as part of the collection from Consul Joseph Smith of Venice in 1762.

Lucien Girard was a Parisian jeweller active during the early decades of the twentieth century, with a registered workshop on the rue du Temple from the early 1920s. He belonged to the tradition of highly skilled fabricants who supplied fine jewellery to leading Paris maisons during the interwar period. While documented as working with Lacloches Frères, Girard operated as an independent workshop craftsman rather than as an exclusive designer for a single house — a common practice within the Paris jewellery trade of the time.

His work reflects the refined geometry and technical precision associated with French Art Deco design, a period during which Paris stood at the forefront of innovation in gemstone cutting and platinum mount construction. The present earrings, set with calibré­cut sapphires arranged in a sculptural curved motif and accented by baguette­cut diamonds exemplify this aesthetic. The contrast between the richly saturated blue sapphires and the linear diamond elements demonstrates the disciplined symmetry and craftsmanship characteristic of Parisian ateliers in the 1930s.

Although Girard is not often counted among the most widely documented designers of the period, surviving pieces bearing his mark attest to the high standard of workmanship achieved by independent Paris workshops supplying the great jewellery houses of the era.

BUYER’S PREMIUM

The Buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a Buyer's Premium thereon of 27% plus VAT at 20% (totalling 32.4% inclusive) on the first £20,000 of the hammer price and 26% plus VAT at 20% (31.2% inclusive) up to £500,000, and 20% plus VAT at 20% (24% inclusive) thereafter.

CONDITION REPORTS

The relevant department will be pleased to give condition reports on any lot, where practical. All weights and measures given in the catalogue should be regarded as approximate.

EXPORTING YOUR PROPERTY FROM THE UK

If you are exporting your property, import taxes, customs duties and other fees may apply at the country of destination. It is also your responsibility to ensure that your shipment can be lawfully imported to the destination country.

Please note that due to the withdrawal of the Retail Export Scheme by HMRC, we are unable to provide VAT refund documentation (C88) for hand­carried exports.

In order to qualify for a VAT refund, your lots must be exported by a shipper and valid export documentation must be provided.

PAYMENT AND CLEARANCE

Payment is due immediately after the auction in pounds sterling. If you are a first time buyer we will need your name, address and bank details and will require funds to be cleared before purchases can be released. Please note that payment will only be accepted from the registered bidder.

Where practical, payment can be made and purchases collected during the auction.

We reserve the right to add storage charges to all lots not collected within 30 calendar days of the sale. This will include a handling fee of £20 (+ VAT) per consignment and a storage charge of £2 (+ VAT) per lot per day. No goods will be allowed to be collected until these charges have been paid.

ARTIST’S RESALE RIGHT / DROIT DE SUITE

Lots marked with a Φ symbol are potentially subject to a levy.

Droit de Suite is a royalty payable to a qualifying artist or the artist’s heirs each time a work is resold during the artist’s lifetime and up to a period of 70 years after the artist’s death.

Royalties are calculated on a sliding percentage scale based on the hammer price excluding the buyer’s premium. The royalty does not apply to lots selling below £1,000 and the maximum royalty payable on any single lot is £12,500.

Droit de Suite, which is not subject to VAT, will be added to the buyer’s purchase price and then passed on to the relevant collecting agency.

Royalties for Droit de Suite are as follows:

4% Up to £50,000

3% £50,000.01 ­ 200,000

1% £200,000.01 ­ 350,000

0.5% £350,000.01 ­ 500,000

0.25% In excess of £500,000

Up to a maximum levy of £12,500

FIREARMS

Lots marked Ƒ in the catalogue, or by any other means identified as controlled firearms, are subject to the UK firearms/shotgun licencing regime, and should only be viewed/purchased by individuals with appropriate licences. It is the responsibility of the bidders to ensure that they are legally authorised to acquire the lot that they are bidding for. In the event that such a lot is successfully bid for by an individual who is not authorised to possess it, that individual will be required to pay for it, but will not be allowed to take physical possession of it. The auctioneers will re­offer the lot on behalf of the buyer in a future auction; or may accept instructions to dispose of it by some other legal means, at their discretion.

INSURANCE VALUATIONS

Written valuations for insurance can vary from a single item to a large estate. Before starting we discuss the various options available so that the valuation is specifically tailored to individual client’s needs.

For valuations of an entire house contents an itemised bound valuation is produced and can be accompanied by photographs when required. In addition to providing an inventory, written valuations can prevent painful arguments with a loss adjuster in the event of a claim.

PROBATE VALUATIONS

We offer a speedy and professional service for executors and trustees and provide bound valuations for probate and duplicate copies when required. Since security is often a consideration, we can usually arrange for a house to be cleared and sent for auction, our Valuations Department ensures that executors are informed of which sales are involved and the results thereof.

We also carry out valuations for Family Division, Capital Gains Tax, and Private Treaty Sales.
