The nine­headed yidam and consort striding in pratyalidha trampling on animals including geese and bulls and prostrate figures, the primary hands wrapped around his consort holding a kartika and kapala, with the other radiating arms holding various implements, raised on a double­lotus throne, 322g, 8.5cm.

The bodhisattva raised on a double­lotus throne and seated in lalitasana, the posture of royal ease, flanked by two lotus stems, the left hand held in vitarka mudra while the right is outstretched in varada mudra, wearing a dhoti, armlets and a diadem, the hair fashioned into a high chignon and adorned with a figure of Amitabha Buddha, the face with traces of cold­painted pigment, the base sealed, 4.3kg, 26.7cm.

KANGXI 1662­1722

The three­headed and six­armed deity seated in dhyanasana on a layered petal base, wearing a dhoti incised with floral motifs at the hems, embracing Adhiprajna in his arms, her legs wrapped around his waist, each holding a vajra and ghanta in their primary hands and holding chakras, padmas and khadgas in their secondary hands, both looking at each other wearing foliate tiaras, one surmounted by a figure of Amitabha Buddha, and their hair tied in high chignons, 11cm.

Guhyasamaja Tantra is believed to have originated in the third or fourth century in India, with the teaching transmitted to Tibetans from the eleventh century onwards. Guhyasamaja, or ‘Secret Assembly’ describes practices of sexual yoga for transforming ordinary desire into self-transcendent compassion. Two sublime beings, male and female, are shown in ecstatic sexual embrace, signifying the transcendental state that one achieves through the completion of tantric instruction.

Sir Gerard Leslie Makins Clauson (1891­ 1974)

Sir Gerard was an English civil servant, businessman, and Orientalist best known for his studies of the Turkic languages. Clauson studied and published on Chinese Buddhist texts written in Tibetan script, co­authoring various editions and translations. In 1912, Clauson had joined the Royal Asiatic Society, of which he was to remain an active and committed member until his death in May 1974. Clauson served as both President and Director, and in the year before his death was presented with a special commemorative gold medal by the Queen for his services to the society.

A RARE AND INSCRIBED TIBETAN GILT­COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF THE CONFESSION BUDDHA, CANDANASHRI

C.17TH CENTURY

Seated on a cushion in vajraparyankasana with his right hand in bhumisparsa mudra and his left hand in the meditative pose, his face with a hooked nose and pendulous earlobes, his hair in tight curls rising to a ushnisha, inscribed to the reverse Tsan-dan-dpal 9, 5.2kg, 24.6cm.

Formerly the property of Sir Gerard Leslie Makins Clauson (1891- 1974).

This bronze image is closely related to three other sculptures from Confession Buddha sets of almost identical size. These include a figure of Shuradatta at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, accession number M.75.4.21, illustrated in Pratapaditya Pal, Art of Nepal, p.117, no.S38; a figure of Suvikranta sold at Sotheby’s New York, 16th March 2016, lot 726; and a third Confession Buddha sold at Sotheby’s New York, 24th September 1997, lot 94, all with identifying Tibetan inscriptions at the back of their cushions, as seen on the lot offered here. Their robes are also rendered in almost identical fashion, especially the densely striped hem on top of a plain one, as well as the naturalistic fan-shaped pleats gathered in front of their legs. Compare also with another very similar figure depicting Maitreya, although not inscribed, sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 2nd December 2021, lot 1006.

The figure recalls the early Nepalese style of the Licchavi period (400-750 CE), with its hooked nose and protruding lips, as well as the low curved platform base. See David Weldon & Jane Casey Singer, The Sculptural Heritage of Tibet, Buddhist Art in the Nyingjei Lam Collection, p. 120, for a further discussion of a similar figure and the influence of the Liccahvi period. Another feature of note is the base plate, engraved with a visvavajra and cold painted with gilt. When discussing a group of ‘Tashilima’ bronzes formerly in the Getty Collection, Luo Wenhua concluded that the type of base plate engraved with a visvavajra and cold painted with gold is indicative of either Tibetan bronzes made in Tashikitsel (the workshop of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery) or Khalkha Mongolian bronzes (see Luo, ‘Tashi Lhunpo Statuary: Karma and Mt Meru’, in Bonhams Hong Kong, Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, 26th November 2019).

A RARE AND INSCRIBED CHINESE GILT­BRONZE FIGURE OF THE FIFTH PANCHEN LAMA, LOBSANG YESHE (1663­1737)

17TH CENTURY/18TH CENTURY

Seated in dhyanasana on two rectangular cushions intricately detailed with cartouches containing sprays of blossoming lotus surrounded by cell diaper, his right hand raised in vitarka mudra, dressed in voluminous patchwork robes embroidered with further lotus blooms and with incised hems, his face with a serene expression and with pendulous earlobes, the reverse of the base inscribed identifying the figure as Lobsang Yeshe, the fifth Panchen lama, 4.6kg, 21.4cm.

From the collection of Sir Gerard Leslie Makins Clauson (1891- 1974), acquired prior to 1939. Lobsang Yeshe was the fifth Panchen Lama, one of the highest-ranking lamas in the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. He played a major role in religious scholarship, monastic leadership, and relations between Tibet and the Qing dynasty. He was given the title Erdini by the Kangxi Emperor, meaning ‘treasure’, and possessed by all Panchen Lamas thereafter. For a very similar depiction of a different figure, the seventh Dalai Lama, Kalzang Gyatso, see Bonhams London,10th November 2010, noting the very similar rendering of the cushions. Compare also with the 18th century figures of Rolpai Dorje in The State Hermitage Museum, illustrated in Marylin Rhie, Wisdom and Compassion, The Sacred Art of Tibet, p.276, no.100 . Decorated all over with a dense design of large and smaller lotus flowerheads growing from undulating leafy stems with tendrils and further flower buds, and with strings of berries in turquoise, red, pink and yellow, on a dark blue ground. The neck with pale green pendent leaves and the base with a band of lappets, mounted on a short champlevé base adapted as a light fitting for electricity, the flared rim and cloisons gilded, 3.4kg, 42.5cm.

The double gourd, hulu, is an important auspicious symbol in Chinese culture with many meanings. Due to its abundance of seeds, the bottle gourd is a symbol of fertility believed to bring hundreds of sons, hulu baizi. In ancient times many cultures developed the practice of manipulating the shape of growing gourds by tying them with string. These double gourds, once dried, were used to hold food, liquids or medicines and thus the shape became closely associated with wishes for abundance, good luck and good health.

The double gourd is also associated with Immortals. It is the attribute of Li Tie Guai, one of the Eight Daoist Immortals.

The ovoid body with a slender and slightly flared neck flanked by two scroll handles formed as ruyi heads. The two sides painted in cobalt blue with different compositions each of a single bird, one perched on a prunus spray, the other upright on a flowering fruit­tree branch, both with leafy bamboo sprays which are repeated on the neck, each scene bordered above and below with curling leaf motifs, the base unglazed, 28cm.

From the collection of Captain Edward Watkins Whittington-Ince CBE, RN (1886-1976). Edward Watkins Whittington-Ince joined the Royal Navy in 1904. In the years following the war he served on a number of ships, and between 1925 and 1927 was Commanderin-Chief of the East Indies, where it is possible he acquired the moonflask. He received his CBE in 1943 and retired from the Navy three years later, living in Devon until his death in 1976.

While the moonflask shape is originally derived from Syrian glass, this particular vase is copied directly from a Yongle original (apparently unique), now in the Sir Percival David Collection in the British Museum and illustrated on the front cover of Rosemary E Scott’s Elegant Form and Harmonious Decoration. Similar 18th century examples are known, including one from the Edward T Chow collection, now in the Princessehof Museum in Leeuwarden. Another was sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong from the Meiyintang Collection on 7th April 2011, lot 76.

清 青花喜上眉梢紋抱月瓶

Formerly the collection of a Noble Italian Consul based in China during the period 1907-31.

The form of this vase was used during rituals to hold Sacred Plants and are related to ewers containing Sacred Water for ritual washing. The colourful banding seen on the neck of the vase offered here has been painted to resemble banners hung in Buddhist temples. An example of this type is illustrated in R. Kerr, Chinese Ceramics-Porcelain of the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911, p.115, no.101.

The form and design of this lot is modelled after blue and white moonflasks from the Yongle period. Ming dynasty prototypes were modelled after Central Asian or Persian metallic flasks which first entered China in the Tang period.

BIDDING AT AUCTION

BIDDING IN THE ROOM

To bid at auction you will need a paddle number. This can be obtained from client services either during the view or on the day of the sale.

COMMISSION BIDDING

If you are unable to attend the sale you can leave a commission bid. This will be executed on your behalf by the auctioneer who will purchase the lot as cheaply as possible bearing in mind any reserve price and other bids.

TELEPHONE BIDDING

It is usually possible to bid on the telephone by prior arrangement with client services

LIVE ONLINE BIDDING

EXPORTING YOUR PROPERTY FROM THE UK

If you are exporting your property, import taxes, customs duties and other fees may apply at the country of destination. It is also your responsibility to ensure that your shipment can be lawfully imported to the destination country.

Please note that due to the withdrawal of the Retail Export Scheme by HMRC, we are unable to provide VAT refund documentation (C88) for hand carried exports.

In order to qualify for a VAT refund, your lots must be exported by a shipper and valid export documentation must be provided.

PAYMENT AND CLEARANCE

Payment is due immediately after the auction in pounds sterling. If you are a first time buyer we will need your name, address and bank details and will require funds to be cleared before purchases can be released.

Where practical, payment can be made and purchases collected during the auction.

We reserve the right to add storage charges to all lots not collected within 30 calendar days of the sale. This will include a handling fee of £20 (+ VAT) per consignment and a storage charge of £2 (+ VAT) per lot per day. No goods will be allowed to be collected until these charges have been paid.

DROIT DE SUITE

Lots marked with a symbol are poten ally subject to a levy.

Droit de Suite is a royalty payable to a qualifying artist or the artist’s heirs each time a work is resold during the artist’s lifetime and up to a period of 70 years after the artist’s death.

Royalties are calculated on a sliding percentage scale based on the hammer price excluding the buyer’s premium. The royalty does not apply to lots selling below £1,000 and the maximum royalty payable on any single lot is £12,500.

Droit de Suite, which is not subject to VAT, will be added to the buyer’s purchase price and then passed on to the relevant collecting agency.

FIREARMS

Lots marked in the catalogue, or by any other means identified as controlled firearms, are subject to the UK firearms/shotgun licencing regime, and should only be viewed/purchased by individuals with appropriate licences. It is the responsibility of the bidders to ensure that they are legally authorised to acquire the lot that they are bidding for. In the event that such a lot is successfully bid for by an individual who is not authorised to possess it, that individual will be required to pay for it, but will not be allowed to take physical possession of it. The auctioneers will re offer the lot on behalf of the buyer in a future auction; or may accept instructions to dispose of it by some other legal means, at their discretion.

INSURANCE VALUATIONS

Written valuations for insurance can vary from a single item to a large estate. Before starting we discuss the various options available so that the valuation is specifically tailored to individual clients needs.

For valuations of an entire house contents an itemised bound valuation is produced and can be accompanied by photographs when required. In addition to providing an inventory, written valuations can prevent painful arguments with a loss adjuster in the event of a claim.

PROBATE VALUATIONS

We offer a speedy and professional service for executors and trustees and provide bound valuations for probate and duplicate copies when required. Since security is often a consideration, we can usually arrange for a house to be cleared and sent for auction, our Valuations Department ensures that executors are informed of which sales are involved and the results thereof.
