THE ESTATE OF ALAN PETERS OBE

ALAN PETERS OBE (1933–2009): THE MAKER’S MAKER

Lots 437450

We are delighted to offer this collection from the estate of Alan Peters, a seminal figure in 20thcentury British studio furniture. Often described as the “Maker’s Maker,” Peters was a craftsman who was taught in the Arts and Crafts tradition but moved on to being a pioneer of the studio furniture movement, which embraced the clean, functional aesthetics of modern design.

The lots offered in this auction are the remainder of his studio, works commissioned but never sold, and design extras held at his workshop. Alongside this are works he collected by other makers and artists; some by friends such as Hugh Birkett, and others by artists he admired, like Peter Collingwood.

Alan Peters’ career began with a sevenyear apprenticeship under Edward Barnsley, providing him with a direct link to the traditions of Sidney Barnsley and Ernest Gimson. However, while he remained rooted in these traditional techniques, Peters was never a prisoner of the past.

In the 1970s, a seminal trip to Japan and South Korea, supported by a Crafts Council bursary, transformed his design language. He became one of the first Western makers to successfully fuse the Cotswold School ethos with the understated purity of Far Eastern woodworking. This resulted in furniture that was structurally honest, visually light, and deeply respectful of the natural grain of the timber.

Over a career spanning 50 years, Peters received the highest accolades in his field, including an OBE in 1990 for services to British furniture design and the Award of Distinction from the American Furniture Society in 2002. His work is held in permanent collections worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Crafts Study Centre.

LOT SYMBOLS

VAT

Lots marked with an dagger (†) are subject to VAT on the hammer price. In online catalogues, the Sales Tax % column indicates the rate of VAT on hammer price.

CITES REGULATIONS

Please note that lots marked λ may be subject to CITES Regulations when exported.

The CITES Regulations may be found at www.defra.gov.uk/ahvlaen/importsexports/cites/

ARTIST’S RESALE RIGHT / DROIT DE SUITE

Lots marked with a Φ symbol are potentially subject to a levy.

Droit de Suite is a royalty payable to a qualifying artist or the artist’s heirs each time a work is resold during the artist’s lifetime and up to a period of 70 years after the artist’s death.

Royalties are calculated on a sliding percentage scale based on the hammer price excluding the buyer’s premium. The royalty does not apply to lots selling below £1,000 and the maximum royalty payable on any single lot is £12,500.

Droit de Suite, which is not subject to VAT, will be added to the buyer’s purchase price and then passed on to the relevant collecting agency.

Royalties for Droit de Suite are as follows:

3% £50,000.01 200,000

FIREARMS

Lots marked Ƒ in the catalogue, or by any other means identified as controlled firearms, are subject to the UK firearms/shotgun licencing regime, and should only be viewed/purchased by individuals with appropriate licences. It is the responsibility of the bidders to ensure that they are legally authorised to acquire the lot that they are bidding for. In the event that such a lot is successfully bid for by an individual who is not authorised to possess it, that individual will be required to pay for it, but will not be allowed to take physical possession of it. The auctioneers will reoffer the lot on behalf of the buyer in a future auction; or may accept instructions to dispose of it by some other legal means, at their discretion.

VALUATIONS

Valuations are a core part of our business and are usually carried out by a senior specialist or directors. Accuracy, speed and above all confidentiality are paramount.

INSURANCE VALUATIONS

Written valuations for insurance can vary from a single item to a large estate. Before starting we discuss the various options available so that the valuation is specifically tailored to individual client’s needs.

For valuations of an entire house contents an itemised bound valuation is produced and can be accompanied by photographs when required. In addition to providing an inventory, written valuations can prevent painful arguments with a loss adjuster in the event of a claim.

Woolley & Wallis valuations are accepted by all leading insurance companies.

PROBATE VALUATIONS

We offer a speedy and professional service for executors and trustees and provide bound valuations for probate and duplicate copies when required. Since security is often a consideration, we can usually arrange for a house to be cleared and sent for auction, our Valuations Department ensures that executors are informed of which sales are involved and the results thereof.

We also carry out valuations for Family Division, Capital Gains Tax, and Private Treaty Sales.
