1001 A RARE ‘PRIVATEER’ OPAQUE­TWIST WINE GLASS C.1760 the slightly flared bucket bowl engraved with a ship in full sail and inscribed ‘Succefs to the DEFIANCE Privateer’, the stem with two entwined opaque gauze cables 15.3cm Provenance English private collection, purchased from Christie’s, 18th May 1999, lot 312. Catalogue Note The Bristol privateer owned by George Bush, Richard George, Richard Symes, John Snow, William Libby and Co., was first declared on 10th March 1757. It was a ship of 200 tons with twenty guns and was successively commanded by Captains Clarke and Condon.

1002 A RARE ‘PRIVATEER’ OPAQUE­TWIST WINE GLASS C.1760 the slightly flared bucket bowl engraved with a ship in full sail and inscribed ‘Succefs to the EAGLE FRIGATE,’, the stem with four spiral threads outside a gauze cable 16.6cm Provenance English private collection, purchased from Sotheby Parke Bernet & Co, 21st October 1981, lot 76. Catalogue Note The Eagle is the best known of the Bristol ‘Privateers’. The Eagle was owned by Messrs. Camplin and Smith of Bristol and Manslip and Wilkinson of London. She was purpose built as a Privateer and was described as being 250 tons and carrying 24 guns. Two advertisements in the London Chronicle give the commander of this Privateer as Captain Dibden, succeeded by Captain Knill in 1757.

Catalogue Note The Oliver Cromwell was a small Bristol Privateer of 80 tons, 14 guns and 10 swivels and was commanded by Paul Flyn, the owners being Daniel White, James Ireland, John Snow, John Stevenson, Samuel Sedgeley, Allen Bright and William Hunt.

The name bugloss comes from the ancient Greek and means ‘ox’s tongue’, and its flowers are normally violet­blue. Its roots are believed to be diuretic. Early modern herbalists believed that a decoction of the seeds, preferably in wine, banished melancholy and lifted the mood.

THE IDA CLARKE COLLECTION Christopher and Ida Clarke started their antiques business in Stow on the Wold in 1961. With Christopher mostly on the road buying for the business, Ida took care of the shop whilst raising a young family. The couple bought a wide variety of items to furnish their home but Delftware appealed to Ida early on and over nearly 40 years she formed her collection. Time and memory have clouded which was the first piece, with two possible contenders. It might have been the plate with Cockerel, Hen and Chick, part of lot 1141, or the Candlestick, lot 1118. The plate was given by Kenneth Hammitt, an American dealer, customer and friend after bidding for him at the Garner collection auction. He insisted that Ida chose something from his many purchases and she took the plate. The Lambeth Candlestick was purchased at the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair in 1966 from DM & P Manheim and always remained one of her favourite pieces. More Delftware was bought over the coming decades for both the shop stock and the home. Jonathan Horne was a customer before he started to specialise, as was Tristram Jellinek who became a great friend. Both sold items to the collection and tried to buy other items from it. Godden, The Illustrated Guide to Lowestoft Porcelain, 1969, pp. 60 and 61 for a brief discussion on the plate and illustration 58 showing both sides of the plate. Catalogue Note The style of the inscription and doodling is very similar to those found on the base of a Lowestoft inkpot held at the British Museum, registration number 1938,0314.51.CR. The inscription in the inkpot reads ‘John Mills July the 4th. 1766’. The inkpot is also discussed on page 60 of Geoffrey Godden’s book and shown in illustration 57. It was also illustrated in The Connoisseur, June 1927, as part of Mr Wallace Elliot’s Collection of English Porcelain.

Wallace Elliot was a businessman and founder member of the English Ceramic Circle and its President from 1930 until his death in 1938. He bequeathed 100 pieces of English pottery and porcelain to the British Museum and another 100 pieces to the Victoria and Albert Museum with the remainder of his collection sold at Sotheby’s on May 24th to 26th, 1938. PAYMENT AND CLEARANCE Payment is due immediately after the auction in pounds sterling. Lots marked with an omega ( ) have been temporarily imported from outside the EU and are subject to VAT at 5% on the hammer price and the buyer’s premium. ARTIST’S RESALE RIGHT / DROIT DE SUITE

Lots marked with a symbol are poten ally subject to a levy. Droit de Suite is a royalty payable to a qualifying artist or the artist’s heirs each time a work is resold during the artist’s lifetime and up to a period of 70 years after the artist’s death. Royalties are calculated on a sliding percentage scale based on the hammer price excluding the buyer’s premium. The royalty does not apply to lots selling below £1,000 and the maximum royalty payable on any single lot is £12,500. Droit de Suite, which is not subject to VAT, will be added to the buyer’s purchase price and then passed on to the relevant collecting agency. Royalties for Droit de Suite are as follows: 4% Up to £50,000 3% £50,000.01 200,000 1% £200,000.01 350,000 0.5% £350,000.01 500,000 0.25% In excess of £500,000 Up to a maximum levy of £12,500

FIREARMS Lots marked in the catalogue, or by any other means identified as controlled firearms, are subject to the UK firearms/shotgun licencing regime, and should only be viewed/purchased by individuals with appropriate licences. It is the responsibility of the bidders to ensure that they are legally authorised to acquire the lot that they are bidding for. In the event that such a lot is successfully bid for by an individual who is not authorised to possess it, that individual will be required to pay for it, but will not be allowed to take physical possession of it. The auctioneers will re offer the lot on behalf of the buyer in a future auction; or may accept instructions to dispose of it by some other legal means, at their discretion.
