A RARE ‘PRIVATEER’ OPAQUE TWIST WINE GLASS C.1760

the flared bucket bowl engraved with a ship in full sail and inscribed ‘Succefs to the EAGLE FRIGATE JOHN KNILL COMMANDER’, raised on a double series opaque twist stem 16.5cm high

English private collection, formerly the collection of Henry Brown, Sotheby’s, 25th February 1947, lot 65, later purchased from Christie’s 29th June, 1993, lot 101.

Catalogue Note

The Eagle is the best known of the Bristol ‘Privateers’. The Eagle was owned by Messrs. Camplin and Smith of Bristol and Manslip and Wilkinson of London. She was purpose built as a Privateer and was described as being 250 tons and carrying 24 guns. Two advertisements in the London Chronicle give the commander of this Privateer as Captain Dibden, succeeded by Captain Knill in 1757.

Catalogue Note

Although not listed by Damer Powell, the St Andrew was a very active Privateer based in Bristol. In 1759, W Owen published in his Miscellaneous Correspondence a ‘List of Ships, taken by the English’. Here it is noted that between April and October 1758, no less than seven foreign vessels were captured by the St Andrew Privateer of Bristol.

The plate commemorates the demonstration flight of Italian aeronaut, Vicenzo Lunardi, on 15th September 1784 from the Artillery Ground in Finsbury. A crowd of over 200,000 watched the ascent, and others (no doubt including the workers at the nearby delftware factories) would have seen the balloon pass overhead on its flight to Standon Green End.

ARTIST’S RESALE RIGHT / DROIT DE SUITE

Lots marked with a symbol are poten ally subject to a levy.

Droit de Suite is a royalty payable to a qualifying artist or the artist’s heirs each time a work is resold during the artist’s lifetime and up to a period of 70 years after the artist’s death.

Royalties are calculated on a sliding percentage scale based on the hammer price excluding the buyer’s premium. The royalty does not apply to lots selling below £1,000 and the maximum royalty payable on any single lot is £12,500.

Lots marked in the catalogue, or by any other means identified as controlled firearms, are subject to the UK firearms/shotgun licencing regime, and should only be viewed/purchased by individuals with appropriate licences. It is the responsibility of the bidders to ensure that they are legally authorised to acquire the lot that they are bidding for. In the event that such a lot is successfully bid for by an individual who is not authorised to possess it, that individual will be required to pay for it, but will not be allowed to take physical possession of it. The auctioneers will re offer the lot on behalf of the buyer in a future auction; or may accept instructions to dispose of it by some other legal means, at their discretion.

INSURANCE VALUATIONS

Written valuations for insurance can vary from a single item to a large estate. Before starting we discuss the various options available so that the valuation is specifically tailored to individual clients needs.

For valuations of an entire house contents an itemised bound valuation is produced and can be accompanied by photographs when required. In addition to providing an inventory, written valuations can prevent painful arguments with a loss adjuster in the event of a claim.

PROBATE VALUATIONS

We offer a speedy and professional service for executors and trustees and provide bound valuations for probate and duplicate copies when required. Since security is often a consideration, we can usually arrange for a house to be cleared and sent for auction, our Valuations Department ensures that executors are informed of which sales are involved and the results thereof.

We also carry out valuations for Family Division, Capital Gains Tax, and Private Treaty Sales.
