Who Are We?
Woodslane Press is an Australian-owned book and digital content publisher, founded in 1994 and based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. It originally published titles related to computing and business, however the imprint has now firmly established itself as one of the country’s leading publishers of outdoor guides, select non-fiction titles and a growing children’s list.
Woodslane Press titles are made available through all relevant channels, from traditional bookstores, online retailers, education suppliers to specialist accounts, through its sister company Woodslane - a leading independent Australian logistics and book distribution company.
The vast majority of our books are written in Australia by passionate Australian authors. All the management of our book development and production happens in Sydney and when we outsource design, editing and other project work we always use Australian designers, editors, cartographers and other professionals where we can. Our books use sustainably sourced FSC papers.

Judith attributes Dr Seuss’ fantastical tales about faraway places to her love of writing children’s books. She is an award-winning author, education consultant and playwright. After teaching phonics and phonemic awareness to children in Europe, the Middle East, India and China, Judith saw a growing need to support literacy in schools. Her desire to lend a ‘helping hand’ to those involved in the art of teaching basic reading skills resulted in a series of wonderfully written and illustrated, Australian phonemethemed stories. Apart from developing reading skills, the books foster imagination, language and soundspelling recognition.

Gabrielle is a mum of two and works in an Australian University. In her role she does a lot of disability, diversity and inclusion advocacy work with staff and students. The boy in the story Jack is based upon her own son.

Dianne Bates was born and brought up in Sydney and Appin, New South Wales. Initially a teacher, Di began writing books for children, beginning with Terri, published by Penguin in 1981. Since then Dianne has had over 140 books published, seeing several of them win state and national awards, and she herself has been awarded the Lady Cutler prize for services to children's literature. She has also worked on the editorial teams of a number of child literature-related and educational journals. Di compiles a fortnightly online magazine, Buzz Words, for people in the children’s book industry www.buzzwordsmagazine.com
Toby Hammerschlag was a special education teacher for thirty years, concentrating on assisting children with learning disabilities to become literate. She was born in South Africa and immigrated to Australia in 1986 with her husband and two young daughters. She was a competitive netball player in both countries. Her inspiration for the novel comes from her many years of working with children from diverse backgrounds combined with her love of sport and the Sydney landscape.

Rhonda Inkamala is a multilingual Western Arrarnta, Luritja and Pitjantjatjara woman, artist and teacher, who lives on her beautiful Traditional Land on the Iwupataka Land Trust at Jay Creek in Central Australia. She is passionate about maintaining cultural heritage and identity, and sharing her cultural knowledge of the land, plants and animals.

Margaret James is an author and educator who now lives on the east coast of Australia, between forest and ocean, after many happy years spent in Central Australia. She is passionate about preserving ancient Aboriginal languages and culture.

Dr Niraj (Nij) Lal is a researcher, writer and presenter based in Melbourne. He graduated with a PhD in physics from the University of Cambridge as a Gates Scholar in 2012, was named one of the ABC's Top 5 Scientists Under 40 in 2016, and his recent awards include the 2021 Celestino Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science and the 2022 Royal Societies of Australia and New Zealand Piasecki Prize for Outstanding Writing on Social Change. He's currently a Visiting Fellow at the ANU and host of the ABC Kids Podcast Imagine This with over 13 million listens. He lives in Melbourne, Australia with his partner Sally and three kids Ash, Ella and Miles.

Myke Mollard is a children’s educator, illustrator, author and designer – just some of his creative talents. Through his early career in graphic design and advertising, he later found outlets for his passion to educate kids about the natural world around them, informing and entertaining them in the classroom, at home and online. With a growing list of 21 books and counting, Myke's anatomically correct and colourful illustrations are complimented with fascinating facts to engage readers of all ages. His books Wildlife of Australia's Great Barrier Reef and Australian Backyard Birds were featured as Notables in the 2024 CBCA Awards.

Bec Nanayakkara is a childrens author who, having spent 12 years supporting student learning and wellbeing, is certain that the best way to teach anything is with a good story. Bec lives in the New England region of New South Wales with her husband and five children. She spends her days being inspired by ordinary, everyday pieces of life and her nights trying to weave that inspiration into picture book manuscripts.

Rhonda Ooi is an author and primary school teacher with a Master of Gifted Education. She lives in Melbourne and when she’s not working out how to fit more picture books on her bookshelf, she is imagining stories, inspired by the children in her life.

Faeza Samnakay is an Inclusive Educator with 20 years of experience working in schools, coordination services, and consultancy in the therapy space. She is a passionate advocate for disability inclusion as well as linguistically diverse organisations that support the empowerment of marginalised women and children. Craig Sheather is a freelance travel writer and creative author from Albury. His writing focuses on nature, travel, history, culture, hiking, camping, food and real-life stories for children. Craig has trekked to Everest Base Camp, been chased through the streets of Pamplona by rampaging bulls, swilled beer at the Munich beer-fest, was stalked by a hippo in Tanzania and fell asleep on a chopper flight over The Grand Canyon. However, his most ambitious travel escapade was taking his wife to Borneo to complete the gruelling Death March trek… on their Honeymoon! He is a frequent contributor to On the Road & Great Walks magazines and he has authored four books.

Emma Stuart has been illustrating children's books professionally since 2001, having illustrated more than 250 books in Australia and overseas. Having lived in Melbourne, London, Berlin, Alice Springs and now regional Victoria, her work reflects a rich sense of place and storytelling. Working across watercolour, acrylic, oils, pencil and ink, Emma combines traditional techniques with digital layering in Procreate and Photoshop to create illustrations full of warmth, texture and expressive characters. Her work has received national and international recognition, including a Literary Titan Book Award in 2021, being shortlisted for the Australian Speech Pathology Book of the Year in 2013 and a finalist in the International Book Awards in 2014.

Sam B is an Australian digital artist from Canberra. His boldly lined, saturated art style seeks to invoke nostalgia for various traditional printmaking techniques of the past while utilising the wider palette of options a contemporary art program can provide. Sam worked closely with Faeza to authentically represent her family’s cultural background. After drawing extensively for online clients, this is his first children’s picture book.

Deb Brown loves to draw and allow her imagination to run wild. She is a graphic designer, book designer and web designer who has worked on many award-winning picture books. Deb says that telling stories through her paintings still gives her the biggest thrill and will always be her happy place.

Adam Carruthers is an illustrator and designer based in Melbourne, Australia. He has worked in the gift industry for a couple of decades, designing and illustrating toys, greeting cards and stationery. He loves bringing stories to life and has been lucky enough to illustrate nine children’s books.
