How can I help children deal with anxiety? Lou Harvey-Zahra shares tips for children who are struggling with confidence, dealing with friendship worries and feeling overloaded in this extract from Growing Children, Thriving Children: Raising 7 to 12 year olds with confidence and awareness
About Lou Harvey-Zahra Many of you, as carers and teachers, will have met Lou through her frequent school visits. She is a teacher, an experienced parenting coach and respected author of many holistic parenting books. She grew up and did her teacher training in England before moving to Australia where she has taught in numerous kindergarten, primary, SEND and Steiner-Waldorf school settings, including training teachers for over 25 years.
Each of us, in our middle years of childhood, faces the Rubicon river alone. A crossing is essential. But what happens when a child freezes, not moving forwards or backwards? This is a description of deep-seated anxiety. Anxious children feel stuck in dilemma: the way forward and back are both impossible. Another way of describing it is that anxious children feel out of their depth. Movement is required; the only way to help is to coax the first steps.
Scenario: Comparisons and lack of confidence •
During the middle years, anxious feelings can arise from children’s growing awareness of themselves as an individual, and how they compare with their peers and those around them. They may start to feel they are too different, or simply ‘not good enough’. Teachers, parents and caregivers can help bolster children’s self-confidence by providing encouragement and support using the following strategies.

Establish repeated sayings to draw upon if required. Themes may include: ‘Everyone has a gift to share and something they find difficult’; ‘If you can’t make a mistake, you can’t make anything’ and ‘I believe in you’. Say ‘Whoops a daisy!’ when things fail, and ‘At least I tried!’ If children put themselves down, say, ‘Do not tell your brain that!’ or ‘Don’t listen, brain!’ or ‘Cancel that thought!’ Identify children’s qualities and praise them frequently. Tell stories of your own childhood and how you came to realise that everyone is both the same and unique. Include themes that humans are designed to learn through making mistakes, and that trying our best is what counts. Guided visualisations may be useful. Include white light bubbles of protection, and imaginary magic wands and swords of bravery. Read inspirational and archetypal stories together, including courageous heroes and heroines. Children witness how the characters gather knowledge, skills, courage and a strong will while facing their fears. Before the 9-year crossing, share stories of The Celtic Dragon Myth and The King of Ireland’s Son, which tell of overcoming obstacles. All ancient societies have numerous stories of heroes and heroines that can help children move through this stage.

Scenario: Friendship worries Friendship issues may become more common during the middle years, as stronger peer connections form and change. • • •

A lack of friends is only an issue if it causes unhappiness. Some children are perfectly content to have one friend and prefer alone time. Respect this. When children are unhappy, listen to their fears and concerns. Acknowledge that you understand, and reassure them that things will change in time. Look to see if children are being too shy or overcontrolling or bossy, which may create friendship issues. Help them balance these tendencies without labelling, which can lead to self-consciousness. Instil a new behaviour, albeit subtly: ‘Great leaders ask for new ideas and make sure everyone has a turn to choose the game!’ Share stories of how your childhood friendships changed, but everything was fine in time.

Coach children on how to look for other friends, or give them ideas on how to enjoy being alone, until new friendships form. Role-play how to handle tricky social situations, how to express feelings and how to walk away. Talk through friendship skills, and how to be a good friend. Children start to learn that it is not OK to hurt others’ feelings at this age. Make sure children who are feeling hurt know to say, ‘Stop, I don’t like it!’ and to tell a teacher. It can be helpful for them to practise this with a parent in a safe environment, especially if they seem hesitant to stand up for themselves.
Scenario: Feeling overloaded What can I do to help a child feeling the pressure of too many expectations? • •
Dealing with the many transitions common during the middle years can leave children feeling that life is out of control Consider how to simplify children’s lives or drop an outside activity that is creating stress in the weekly rhythm.
How can I help a child feeling overwhelmed by the harshness of the world? •

A child may also feel overloaded by adult images of the world. If a traumatic experience occurs and a child witnesses the harshness of the world, it can be difficult for them to digest, and this may generate anxiety. Talk to children about good people and kind acts to counter this overload.
How can I help a child who is experiencing extra-sensory issues?

Some children experience extra-sensory issues. Their senses can feel overloaded by, for example, noise, crowds and overstimulation. Being in busy environments may bring on anxiety. If parents, teachers and children are aware of individual triggers, they can help to de-escalate anxious feelings.

Floris Books’ 50th Birthday Officially founded on 14 October 1976, Floris Books turns fifty this year. In half a century, we have grown from a team of one to nineteen, bringing over 7 million books to readers along the way. Our Twenties
Christian Maclean (not at his kitchen table!)
The Early Years Floris Books was founded in Edinburgh by Christian Maclean, emerging from the existing Christian Community Press. The company name is a reference to Joachim of Fiore (or Joaquín de Floris), a twelfth-century Italian mystic whose writing challenged the established church. In those days, the company operated from Christian’s kitchen table!
The Teenage Years Undoubtedly it was Elsa Beskow, sometimes called Sweden’s Beatrix Potter, who most influenced our teenage years. In 1986, at the Frankfurt Book Fair, Christian bought rights to two of her books. We now publish over thirty Elsa Beskow titles as well as books by other classic European authors and illustrators. Our commitment to producing beautiful traditional picture books, still acquired largely during annual trips to international book fairs, continues to this day.

Almost all grown up, it was time for Floris to leave home. Needing more space to accommodate a growing team, Christian grabbed a map, drew a circle around his house that represented a ten-minute walking distance, and proclaimed that the new office had to be within that circle. Floris duly moved nine minutes’ walk away from that original kitchen table, and remained there for more than twenty-five years. At Frankfurt in 2002, Christian arguably made Floris’s best ever book fair deal. An American publisher happened to ask if any Scottish publishers had a marketing vacancy, as their New York-based marketing manager was moving back to Edinburgh. Katy Lockwood Holmes, now Publisher and CEO, has been with Floris ever since! One of Katy’s first projects was to make the Kelpies list of Scottish children’s books Katy has been with Floris for almost – newly acquired from half of our story Canongate – a core part of Floris’ publishing.
Our Thirties Since 2003, we have published over 150 brand-new Kelpies, and the range now encompasses all ages from 1 to 14, including board books, picture books, early readers, novels, activity books, non-fiction, and even jigsaw puzzles. One of the projects we are most proud of is the Kelpies Prize, which was launched in 2004 and uncovers fresh writing talent in Scotland. Some of our most popular Kelpies authors, including Mike Nicholson, Janis Mackay and Lari Don, were Kelpies Prize winners or shortlisters. In 2014, we expanded to include an Illustration prize as well as a Writing prize, and in 2026 we’ve had more entries than ever before.

Our Forties Over the past ten years, Floris has grown steadily, moving not once but twice to increasingly larger offices. Our current canal-side location is perfect for our nineteen-strong team. We enjoyed recognition in Scotland, winning the Saltire Society Scottish Publisher of the Year award in 2016. In 2018 our Community Marketing Manager, Elaine Reid, joined our team to strengthen our existing relationships – and build new ones – with Steiner-Waldorf schools, members of The Christian Community, biodynamic practictioners, eurythmists and more. Every spring and advent Elaine Team Floris in 2019 supports your schools to organise bookstalls to fundraise at your fairs. And the whole Floris team looks forward to the Now we’re turning 50!
