any folks know The Woodlands Area Chamber as the organization that cuts the ribbon of a new business in town or the group that hosts socials where professionals come together and network. Some may know The Chamber as the volunteers that coordinate community service projects. What many do not know is The Chamber reaches out even further into many different areas focused on prosperity and success for our members and the entire greater Houston region. In every arena from business advocacy, to economic and community development, to education and workforce development, The Chamber works to ensure there is an environment in which businesses can thrive.
We work with our school districts, local colleges and organizations like Education for Tomorrow Alliance and Leadership Montgomery County to build a strong workforce, so existing businesses can grow and attract new jobs to our community. We are working with lawmakers to ensure our community receives projects, funding and completion of necessary road enhancements, improvements and mobility. Whether it is health care or a new turn signal, early childhood education or the development of a new business, connecting people to grow opportunity or attracting and assisting visitors to the community in navigating with the local businesses and attractions, The Chamber is there working, connecting, advocating and serving.

Business Advocacy Council Aims to
Increase Voter Awareness and Turnout
Ten candidates running for a position on the Lone Star Conservation Groundwater District Board of Directors participated in a candidate forum moderated by Wendy Cawthon of Community Impact Newspaper on Oct. 5 at The Chamber. Participating candidates included Garry Oakley and Jim Spigener (Place 2); John Paul Bouche (Place 3); Harry Hardman and Greg Hope (Place 5); Webb Melder and Jack W. Chance Sr. (Place 6); and Kent Maggert, Emery E. Gallagher and Larry A. Rodgers (Place 7).
The Business Advocacy Council hosted several events throughout October to give voters a chance to educate themselves on candidates running in key local races and to encourage voter turnout for the Nov. 6 general election. The council hosted public forums moderated by Community Impact Newspaper for candidates running in the Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District, Conroe ISD Board of Trustees and The Woodlands Township Board of Directors elections. The council also coordinated “Business Votes Day” on Oct. 25 to provide employees from several area businesses transportation to and from the polling place to cast their ballot. In addition, a reception on Oct. 25 at Avenida Brazil provided voters an opportunity to meet candidates seeking public office. Transportation is a core concept to every aspect of daily life in any community. The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce Celebrates 40 Years of Leadership in the Business Community at Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon.

he Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce brought more than 200 business leaders together on Friday, Sept. 21 at the Holiday Inn & Suites – Shenandoah for its 40th Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon. Chamber members and guests gathered to celebrate the year’s successes and honor volunteers who have showed exemplary support to help further The Chamber’s mission and bolster the business community. Speakers for the event included J.J. Hollie, president and CEO of The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce; 2017-2018 Chairman of the Board Frank Holmes of Sam Houston State University; and U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady who served as the president of The Chamber from 1985 to 1996. Hollie referenced accomplishments of The Chamber over the past fiscal year and shared his commitment to serving businesses, driving economic growth and advancing The Chamber’s role in the community. “My vision for The Chamber is to ensure we are equipped to win the next generation,” Hollie said. “In the coming year, you’ll see an exciting evolution within The Woodlands Area Chamber and how we serve the business community” Hollie and Holmes recognized the 2017-2018 Board of Directors and Team Leaders
for their leadership to The Chamber in the past year. Members celebrating anniversary milestones also received recognition. The Chamber also recognized Jennifer Majors Baca as Diplomat of the Year, noting she has been an active volunteer serving on numerous committees including the Business Advocacy Council, Community Relations Team, Putt, Pass & Chip Golf Championship Team, Transportation Education Council, Cards and Cocktails and Networking Breakfast Team. “We see this annual tradition as a great opportunity to honor our outstanding members, volunteers and supporters,” Cyndi Alvarado, vice president of membership, said. “This year’s honorees really stepped up and helped to make a difference in our community.” Now in its 40th year, The Chamber owes much of its success to the countless number of businessmen and women who have donated their time and talent to the betterment of South Montgomery County. Kicks Off Year at Opening Retreat The Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2019 kicked off Leadership Montgomery County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, their year with their opening retreat on September 6 and 7. dedicated cultivating the future leaders of Montgomery County. Class members arrived at Camp Allen on Thursday, September 6 to a day of team-building activities. LMC Board Chairman Melissa Young and Executive Director Sarah Rhea welcomed the class before they began their day with retreat facilitator Kent Hutchison. After lunch, the class got to know each other and bond over afternoon team-building activities at the Challenge Course sponsored by James & Janet Stilwell. In the evening, the class heard potential project presentations from three local nonprofit organizations. After small group and overall class The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce, The Woodlands Area discussion, the class selected to assist Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Magnolia Parkway Chamber of Commerce, Angel Reach with their project. the Greater East Montgomery County Chamber, the Montgomery County On Friday, September 7, the 45 class Hispanic Chamber, and the Montgomery Area Chamber are all partner members explored various learning chambers in the LMC program. Participants are chosen by application process and leadership styles, followed by class in June of each year. 5 Easy Ways to Support Education With holiday hustle and bustle around the corner, it is the perfect time of year to take a moment to give thanks by giving back. Here are five ways you can give a little time this month to have real impact on students right here in Montgomery County.

Serve on a career panel. On November 6 at Oak Ridge High School, on November 15 at Conroe High School, and on November 28 at Peet Junior High School, Education for Tomorrow Alliance volunteers will be sharing their career journeys with students. Volunteers impart their lessons learned to help students plan for next steps in life.

Vote! After you vote in the November 6 general election, take to your computer and vote for your favorite student artwork in the Wright’s Printing SCI://TECH Poster Competition. The artwork entries featuring this year’s theme, Where STEM Gets its Roots, will be open for public vote through November 15. While you are online, be sure to sign up as a SCI://TECH science fair volunteer for Friday, February 1 at 7:45 am, 9:30 am or 2:00 pm.

Spend some time in school supporting students through classroombased Future Focus presentations. On November 8 & 9, Education for Tomorrow volunteers like you will engage more than 700 junior high students in making positive decisions, understanding educational options, and setting SMART goals.

Conduct mock interviews. On November 14, volunteers will have the opportunity to put the 12th grade Next Generation Leadership students on the spot through rounds of practice career Q and A. Represent your company at a career fair. On November 30, Caney Creek High School will welcome community volunteers to their lunchtime fair where students will learn about a wide range of career options.

The Taste of the Town committee is composed of Chamber members interested in becoming more involved in this long-standing signature event.
The Community Relations Team is well on their way to making a difference in our community. The team chose 14 nonprofit organizations to work with for this next fiscal year, in addition to planning the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.
Now in its 33rd year, Taste of The Town is a large food and beverage expo showcasing more than 40 area restaurants where attendees can sample signature menu items all in one night. The committee meets monthly from July to January and is responsible for securing restaurants and raffle items while promoting the event to the community. “The Taste of the Town committee is vital in making the event a success. Our monthly meetings are a place where innovative ideas are brought to life and new relationships are fostered,” says team leader, Alexa Horak of Planet Ford Lincoln. “Although the planning for this event truly is a year-round task, it’s extremely rewarding to see all of the committee’s hard work come to fruition the night of Taste of the Town.” The next committee meeting is November 7 at 8:30 a.m. at The Chamber office. In October, the team took on three different projects. They started the month off volunteering as referees for Cassidy Joined for Hope’s KickFest. The event benefits teen suicide awareness and prevention throughout the community and schools. The team also sought donations with a goal of collecting 1,500 liquid food meal replacements of Glucerna and Ensure on behalf of Meals on Wheels Montgomery County and ended the month volunteering at New Danville for their Fall Festival/Halloween Celebration. Although their schedules were full in October, the team has already selected the theme for the 2019 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon – Our Volunteers Sparkle “Volunteers Are A Community’s Best Friend.” More information will be released in the coming months on this incredible luncheon. If you are looking for ways to give back and learn more about nonprofit organizations in our community, we invite you to join our Community Relations Team. The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership (EDP) announces the promotion of Ashley Byers to Manager of Marketing and Outreach. Ashley has been with the organization for over six years and manages all aspects of the marketing department to include creating the company’s marketing campaign on a local to international level, graphic design, ad placement, contract negotiations, website content and social media campaigns. Ashley also plans and executes quality special events for the Partners, as well as provides executive support to the CEO, Gil Staley, with various high-profile projects. Business law firm Stibbs & Co. added a new attorney to its prestigious ranks. Morgan Muñoz joined the firm’s litigation section in September. A Texas Native, Muñoz became a licensed attorney in Colorado before also earning a law license in Oklahoma, where she represented business clients with an emphasis on employment law. Now back in Texas, and fully licensed in Texas as well, Ms. Muñoz worked in tandem with the in-house legal team of a local oil and gas corporation prior to joining Stibbs & Co.

The 19,000-squarefoot building will house a large multi-use worship center, a gymnasium, classrooms and office space. A sports field also will be built. The Rev. The Montgomery County Food Bank hosted a Shootout Hunger fundraiser on September 21st at Able’s Sporting in Huntsville, Texas. Over $92,000 was raised providing 460,000 meals to children, seniors, and families in need in Montgomery County.
