Finding Chamber Value Circumstances change, life changes, and business changes. And if your organization doesn’t change, then you lose relevance, influence, or market share…and YOU could go out of business. At the Chamber, we hold quarterly strategic planning sessions with Chamber leaders and staff to make sure we are on track with accomplishing the vision and discover ways we can be more effective. Each year, that same team evaluates the 3 Year Vision and Yearly Goals and makes adjustments. After every Signature Event, our volunteer team evaluates the event to see what changes might need to be made to make it better. Our staff meets weekly to discuss progress made towards quarterly goals and resolve any issues. At the core of all this activity is the question of VALUE. How are we providing value to our members and the community? What do we need to do differently? We never want to keep doing something just because that is always the ways it’s been done. Everything we do, whether it is the Economic Outlook Conference, Business After Hours, or advocating for the business community on an important policy must drive value and meet our mission. A perfect example of this mindset is Taste of the Town. Instead of having a one-night event at the Marriott with over 3,000 in attendance, we moved to a month-long event where ticket holders could visit over 40 restaurants and get a drink, sample a dinner item, or grab dessert. Restaurants were hit 2
particularly hard by the pandemic, and this drove traffic to their front door. Over 20,000 visits were made during the month! Advocacy is another major effort of the Chamber. You have probably seen our activity on Incorporation and the question of “Should The Woodlands become a city now?” Our leadership felt it was very important to make every single person aware of the issue and help them to be informed. No matter what position you have on any issue, it just makes sense that people can ask questions and get all the facts. We hope our efforts result in residents knowing about the issue and making an educated vote. In November, we are hosting a new Business Summit to help your business improve. Sessions will be held on Employment Law and HR Issues, Marketing, Franchising, Business Planning, and other topics. The purpose is that you will leave with information that you can apply immediately to help your organization succeed. Whether it is creating relationships with others, being involved in the community, understanding and influencing policy decisions, or increasing your organization’s revenue, we hope you find value in your involvement with the Chamber. We cannot be who we need to be without you. With over 1200 members, you are part of the largest business organization in the Houston region and that brings many opportunities for you. Distinguished Speakers Series Connects Students to Leaders
T
his fall, Education for Tomorrow Alliance resumes their virtual Distinguished Speakers Series. The sessions, which are typically held the first and third Thursday evening of each month, are designed to introduce high school students to leaders in their respective fields. Speakers share their career paths and leave half the time for student questions. Dr. Susan Caffrey, Headmaster at the Academy of Science and Technology at College Park High School, appreciates that the sessions give students convenient access to a wide range of professionals. “Few guests have had a very straight career path. This shows students that it’s okay for them to change their mind or let one experience lead them to the next. The format allows for candid questions.” Fall speakers include Mark Frasier, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer at the Michael J. The Chamber C.A.R.E.S. Committee is teaming up with Meals on Meals Montgomery County to provide birthday bags for homebound seniors during the month of October. The Committee will be collecting a variety of items to stuff about 60 birthday bags to have on hand when one of their clients is celebrating a birthday. Items suggested are coffee mugs, socks, pocket calendar, notepads, Word Search/Cross Word Puzzles in large font, eye glass repair kits,

In addition to Ms. Blair’s presentation, Heather Ramsey-Cook, Director of Communications & Public Affairs for San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) presented a sponsored resolution this morning to the committee regarding TRA (long-term water planning) support of future water planning and SJRA’s option to purchase water from Trinity River Authority. As a result, the Business Advocacy Council Committee motioned that Member Sponsored Resolution be moved to the Board of Directors meeting for approval. Profile of Success Westwood Restoration
O
ctober 17th,2018 8:26pm, “Hello this is Sydney with the fire department, we have received a call from your alarm company about a fire at your home….” That message would turn out to be the start of a life changing journey into the world of disaster restoration for Brett Jensen, a longtime Woodlands resident and founder of Westwood Restoration, after his home tragically caught fire. The fire rendered next to nothing salvageable from the house, causing millions in damages and risking the safety of his wife who was then pregnant with their daughter, mother, and three dogs who were all in the house when the fire broke out. The fire was started by painters who had carelessly left a pile of rags in a room they were working in earlier that day. Surviving the fire would turn out to be the easy part of the road back to normal. The fire fighters, arson investigators, and fire marshal finally left around 1am, but curiously there was still someone standing in the remains of what was once a kitchen claiming to be a “fire official” demanding a signature on a restoration services contract. The world of “fire chasing” and the business of disaster restoration was now on full display, and it wasn’t a pretty sight. After many discussions with his longtime business partner, Britthaney Smith,

Things Businesses Should Do to Protect Themselves from Hackers
Replace aging End-Of-Life (EOL) software & equipment. When either equipment or software is no longer supported by the manufacture that puts your business at risk. Sure, the software or equipment will continue to operate but because it’s no longer supported, the manufacture stops releasing security updates, which makes you a target for hackers. Keep up with patches and updates. If you haven’t checked for updates on your computer then you’re missing critical security updates that keep you protected against hackers. On a regular basis weaknesses are discovered in the Operating Systems, Applications, Utilities, & Equipment that you use. You must be diligent in performing frequent updates of your software and equipment to keep known vulnerabilities patched. Stop using default passwords! When you get a new security camera or any other Internet connected device, change the default passwords! If you don’t, you leave yourself at risk. Anyone wanting access will do a quick Google search to find the default admin and password for the device.
Once they have the password they can access the equipment and do whatever they want with it. They can terrorize your baby monitor or watch the video feed for when you leave the house/office. Stop using bad passwords. For years people are still using terrible passwords for their systems. It’s easy to remember 123456, 123456789, or password1 but they are also very easy to crack and guess. Use a series of words sprinkled with a few numbers that you can remember like this UsinGeAsyPassWords!isBad which is much harder to guess or crack. Stop sharing passwords across multiple sites. Many people use the same email and password combination on every website (with a variation or two). I used to be guilty of this too. The problem is when a website is hacked and that password is exposed then it’s all too easy to try that same password combination on other sites. Will it work on Office 365, Apple, or Gmail accounts? Once a hacker has access to your emails then it makes it even easier for them to reset other passwords to sites like your bank. Instead of sharing passwords,
use a Password Manager which will keep all of your passwords in one place and will generate hard to guess passwords. Backup! Make sure ALL of your critical files are backed up. The goal of ransomware is to encrypt your files holding them ransom until you pay. If you have them backed up to a secure location (locally and/or offsite) then the potential loss is just a restore away and keeps you from paying the ransom. Backups need to be checked often as they fail regularly for various reasons. It’s a good practice to do a fire drill, a restore, regularly to verify the integrity of the backup. Use Multifactor Authentication (MFA or 2FA) on all critical accounts. When you log into a website it requires your username and a password. MFA is additional layer of security which is normally a code presented on your phone. This can be a simple SMS text message or a rotating code from an Authenticator app (recommended over SMS). Enabling MFA will stop a hacker’s attempts to gain access to your accounts if your password was compromised.
