This year’s Legacy Award honored the late Jim Blair and his massive impact on The Woodlands community. About Legacy Award Recipient Jim Blair The Chamber’s 2023 Legacy Award recipient, Jim Blair, is often described as “larger than life”. A Founding Capital Partner of Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson LLP, Jim Blair passed away in January at 81 years of age yet his huge legacy in The Woodlands community lives on. Jim is widely remembered for his love of and generosity to his state and especially to Montgomery County. His overwhelming support over many years to schools, officeholders and candidates, charities too numerous to count, and especially the Chamber, lives on in our community forever. Jim used his legal skills and powers of persuasion to champion causes that touched his heart, such as Interfaith of The Woodlands, the Montgomery County Food Bank, and Hurricane Ike relief. Jim Blair was named a 2011 “Hometown Hero” of The Woodlands.

The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce brought more than 200 business leaders together in September to celebrate our 45th Annual Meeting & Awards Luncheon. The event is held each year following the end of the Chamber year on August 31st to recognize members who have shown exemplary support of the Chamber and the business community. J.J. Hollie, President & CEO of The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce also delivers the annual report, detailing The Chamber’s activities and accomplishments during the 2022-2023 fiscal year.

The Woodlands Resort, Curio Collection by Hilton Hosts Chamber’s | Meet the New Members
O
ur September Meet the New Members was a special treat as guests had the opportunity to tour the beautifully renovated Woodlands Resort. The $30-million project has impacted almost every aspect of the award-winning property, which marks its milestone 50th anniversary in 2024. The evening kicked off at The Spruce Market. The newly launched waterfront venue is a real treat. Part café and part retail experience, it’s an all-day destination with a patio that’s going to be perfect for the cooler temperatures. The chic space is perfect for morning coffee and a light bite during the day, or the space can be reserved for a private evening cocktail reception. The retail boutique features local artisans and makers creating something that is unique to The Woodlands.

Curated offerings have been sourced from small from The Woodlands Resort. businesses, artisans, designers and makers from across Texas and range from fashion accessories and honey harvested from The Resort’s own hives to Winfield’s chocolates and regionally produced olive oils. Be sure to take advantage of end of year perks just for The Woodlands area residents that mark the Township’s golden anniversary. Highlights include a giveaway of a commemorative piece of artwork created by Houstonbased illustrator Judith Dollar beginning October 16 while supplies last and a 50% discount on coffee every Monday through Friday between 7 and 10 am in November. And in December, when residents spend $50 or more on retail items, they will be treated to a complimentary cocktail at The Lobby Bar. Breakfast Spotlight | The Abundant Harvest Kitchen & Bistro
S
eptember’s Breakfast Spotlight was The Abundant Harvest Kitchen and Bistro by St. Isidore Episcopal Church.
The Abundant Harvest Kitchen & Bistro has a mission to feed the body, nourish the soul, and transform the Montgomery County community. 2017 saw the launch of the Abundant Harvest Food Truck, which immediately met the call for disaster relief, feeding, and rebuilding homes for Hurricane Harvey victims. In 2020, they furthered our mission and launched The Abundant
Harvest Kitchen and Bistro by remodeling an old A/C supply warehouse at 24803 Oakhurst Drive into a fully equipped commercial Kitchen, Bistro, Gymnasium, and Food Pantry. They feed the body in multiple ways. Out of their pantry, they are currently feeding more than 600 families each week suffering from food and life insecurity. In addition, they provide over 1200 hot meals every month through their community partnerships and in their Bistro. They are on track to deliver over 1.2 million lbs. of free food. They nourish the soul as well. Their Gymnasium, called Warrior Church, hosts a free weekly community wellness program. This involves multiple free community wellness exercise programs as well as monthly nutrition classes and soon-to-be meal preparation. More importantly, they treat every person with the utmost dignity, love, and respect by creating an environment where everyone is welcomed and seen. They transform our community by assisting with the creation of small businesses. They are currently subsidizing 7 businesses in their facility in both the food preparation and wellness industries, by helping overcome their startup and operational costs. Candidate Forum The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce partnered with Woodlands Online to host a Candidate Forum in October, featuring candidates running for The Woodlands Township Board of Directors Positions 5, 6 & 7 which will be on the November 7, 2023 ballot. Sean K. Thompson, Woodlands Online News Editor, moderated the event.
The event featured an overview of Constitutional Amendments on the ballot, candidate opening statements as well as Q&A from Thompson and the audience. A live fact checker was present to monitor and verify candidate statements. The candidates discussed their positions on a wide range of topics including the Conroe Independent School District Bond, the role of Village Association Boards, budget priorities for the Township and how to best manage the tremendous growth in The Woodlands area. Time was also spent on public safety, incorporation and natural resources like water.
J.J. Hollie, President & CEO of The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce made the following statement about why the Chamber hosted the forum: “As the voice of business in the area, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce is committed to keeping our region competitive, improving the business climate and advancing policies that create a more prosperous environment. The Chamber understands that elections impact business and local elections have the most impact. It’s crucial that voters and business leaders educate themselves so that their vote is an informed vote.”
