ast month more than 500+ businesses and community leaders, almost 60 sponsors, and 20+ exhibitor booths gathered at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott on February 11th to hear national, regional, and economic updates at the Chamber’s 36th Annual Economic Outlook Conference. Members and non-members gathered to connect, share ideas, and take note of updates and impacts on our economy. The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce believes that business – working with communities, governments, and non-profits – can and must rise to meet the region’s economic challenges. This is one reason why the Chamber takes great pride in hosting the Annual Economic Outlook Conference. At last year’s Conference, Kevin Brady, U.S. Representative serving the 8th District of Texas, announced his retirement. This year we felt fortunate enough to have him return for his final speech as congressman to discuss objectives that could assist with job growth on a national level. Ahead of the March primaries, the Chamber hosted a Meet The Candidates forum for HD 3, 15, and 150. With 8 candidates in attendance, the community was encouraged to come together and listen to their House District candidates speak. Candidates and elected officials

are regularly invited to provide updates and guidance on issues affecting the region. As an advocate for the business community, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce is uniquely positioned to assist in effectively facing challenges by leveraging the collective strength of our membership. We are able to influence public policy related to business and economic development as well as quality of life issues impacting businesses such as those related to education, water and transportation. Without question, we are an organization committed to building a strong, prosperous, and thriving community, and we’re looking forward to this year’s events and opportunities. Women’s History Month

This month we are recognizing six women who served as Chairman of The Board, as well as our current Chairman who have all impacted positive change during their time as Chairman of The Board. Take a walk down memory lane with us as we recognize these phenomenal women.

When I first entered the business world, women were expected to be aggressive and cut-throat in order to successfully compete with men. I have always fought that stereotype, believing that women bring unique styles to business. We can accomplish lofty goals by being competent, professional and authentic. I hope younger leaders will see me as a woman who has led organizations well, while exuding warmth, encouragement and grace.

During my time as Chairman, we took a major stance against incorporation of The Woodlands. I worked alongside our Business Advocacy Council, past Chairman and the entire Chamber Team to ensure that our members and community voices was heard. In November of 2021, the community voted against incorporation.

“Successful change is accomplished by creating a vision, listening, and bringing together all stakeholders, engaging in constant communication and collaboration and being open to alternatives. With collaboration and mutual respect, we can accomplish anything.” During my tenure as Chairman, many issues were addressed but what comes to mind is that we were considering changing the name of our Chamber, and through the above we, as a Chamber, became The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber celebrated its 25th anniversary during my year as Chairman. We took the opportunity to expand the Chamber’s reach from strictly the business community to include the residential community. From this, we learned that some residents of our area were also owners of small businesses, executives of large corporations but were not a part of the Chamber. It was the beginning of The Chamber’s tremendous growth in membership.

The important role of current leadership is to encourage the continued participation of past leadership, and because of that desire, I initiated the inclusion of a Past Chairman as an appointee of the incoming Chair.

My focus during the year I was chair was to bring the county together to work on topics of common interest. My main targets were engaging the Cities of Oak Ridge North and Shenandoah to bring their voices to the South Montgomery County Chamber’s table. They were members but were not always included in discussions. As a result of our efforts, we had active attendance and participation by the two mayors and city managers at board meetings and other meetings like roads and government affairs.

Resolve to Fight Imposter Syndrome In February one of the podcast topics for our Young Professionals Network was “Resolve To Fight Imposter Syndrome. Oxford Dictionary defines Imposter Syndrome as, “The persistent inability to believe that one’s success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one’s own efforts or skills.” We know that we’re already in March but resolutions don’t only have to be set in January. So, this month and every month we’re encourage you to fight Imposter Syndrome whenever it tries to show up in your mind. Here is some advice provided by a few members of our YPN group on how they fight Imposter Syndrome.

Nicole Preston | Community Impact Newspaper: ”Imposter Syndrome leads to distrusting your own success. As a high achiever and performer, I have myself fallen prey to Imposter Syndrome. Imposter Syndrome affects all people and largely affects high achieving women and unfortunately directs our view toward fixing women instead of fixing the environment in which women work. Internalizing and owning your success is a process and reframing your thoughts and asking yourself “Is this story I am telling myself hurting me or helping me” has helped me personally put feelings of being an “imposter” into perspective. Also, surrounding myself with mentors, like-minded professionals and fellow high achievers to bounce these fears off of has been a tremendous help. Even the most successful individuals experience doubt at times but it is important to not let those doubts control you.”

Cameron Cruise | 5Point Credit Union: “Reminding myself that perfection doesn’t exist. Knowing that I can fail without it defining who I am helps me to fight Imposter Syndrome. I try to clear my mind and take a break to regroup whenever I start doubting myself.”

David Deveau | Deveau Financial: “I fight Imposter Syndrome by acknowledging the way I feel when it starts to creep in on me and then reminding myself that I have worked really hard to get where I am. I also remind myself that I have the power within to decide what story I’m telling myself, and the one that I want to tell myself is the one where I am exactly where God wants me to be and there’s a reason I’m here. When you think like that, Imposter Syndrome has to go, because you’ve taken away its power over you.”

In Memory of Past Chairman of The Board, Coulson Tough

e would like to pay tribute to the life and legacy of our 1985–1986 past Chairman Mr. Coulson Tough who passed away last week. Mr. Tough was a leader in the design and development of The Woodlands and a leader in the community since its inception. In 1973, he was hired by Mr. George Mitchell and devoted 30 years of his career as the Vice President of Commercial Design and Construction in The Woodlands. He was very active in our community. He served as our Chamber’s 8th Chairman, was a member of the YMCA board and a founding member of The Woodlands Rotary Club in 1975. He also served as a Conroe Independent School District Trustee and has an elementary school in his namesake. We were and are still honored to have awarded Mr. Tough with a Lifetime Legacy Award at our 2019 Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon. Mr. Tough was described as an extremely humble, punctual, and cheerful individual by his son Bruce Tough, also a former Chairman of our Board and current Chairman’s appointee to our current board. Please join us in sharing our respects and condolences to the entire Tough family.

January’s Meeting Recap Some key issues we will continue to follow… TRANSPORTATION: Robinson Road (City of Oak Ridge North): We are continuing to work collaboratively with the Commissioner’s office on finalizing the road design. We are working to complete the right of way acquisitions to begin the construction process. • The construction of the road will help the development of the Oak Ridge North Plaza District.

Updated Major Thoroughfare Plan (Woodtrace Boulevard to FM 2978) • Transporation project is underway for Precinct 2 Commissioner Charlie Riley to connect Woodtrace Boulevard to FM 2978 that will be solely funded by the West Magnolia Parkway Improvement District. This thoroughfare will not connect to FM 2978 at Woodlands Parkway. The intersection was developed from Texas 249 to the intersection Mansions Way. I-45N PEL Study-TXDOT • The PEL process represents an approach to transportation decision-making that considers environmental, community and economic goals early in the planning stage and carries them through project development, design, and construction.

• Currently the study process is in Phase 2, TXDOT will select with public input, a project, or projects to be evaluated, designed, and built.

I-45 N North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP) • The NHHIP can be a transformative project to alleviate congestion, enhance safety, expand transit options, and address flood mitigation and disaster evacuation needs. While the project is on hold, improvements are challenging to make within the existing Record of Decision and Final Environmental Impact Statement.

• Greater Houston Partnership (GHP) sent in a request for a letterof support on the I-45 expansion. Deadline for The Chamber’s participation was Wednesday. Our process of approval goes to the BAC committee and then to the Board for final approval. This request did not fit our Statement of Support guidelines.

November Diplomat Team of the Month St. Lucia Team St. Lucia crushed it these past four months and kept our members engaged. LMC Class of 2022 Explores Public Safety at Session Sponsored by the City of Conroe The Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2022 recently spent a day learning about public safety in Montgomery County at the LMC Public Safety Session sponsored by the City of Conroe. The session was planned and directed by Lt. Scott Spencer of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Deputy Chief Doug Adams of The Woodlands Fire Department.

The session began at The Woodlands Emergency Training Center with the LMC Leadership Series facilitated by LMC alumni. A Fire & EMS Panel followed that included The Woodlands Fire Department Chief Palmer Buck, City of Conroe Fire Department Chief Ken Kreger, and Montgomery County Hospital District Chief of EMS James Campbell. The class then got a look at the different fire and EMS apparatus before traveling to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Once at the sheriff’s office, the class got to experience a crime scene presentation from investigator Mark Wright. The class then heard from a Law Enforcement Panel that included Montgomery County Sheriff Rand Henderson, Conroe Police Deputy Chief Jerry Abbott, Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon, Texas Department of Public Safety Captain Henry Scarbrough and Montgomery County Precinct 4 Constable Rowdy Hayden. The class then toured the Montgomery County Jail as well as the Montgomery County 911 Communications Center and the Real Time Crime Center. The class then heard a CRASE (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events) presentation by Specialist Steven Squier, before ending the day with a debrief of the entire session.

Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to developing and enhancing current and future leaders of Montgomery County. The mission of LMC is to prepare emerging and existing leaders to understand local issues, grow their leadership skills and connect with others to better serve Montgomery County. The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Magnolia Parkway Chamber of Commerce, the Greater East Montgomery County Chamber, the Montgomery County Hispanic Chamber, and the Montgomery Area Chamber are all partner chambers in the LMC program.
