Renewing Our Core Values As the Chamber welcomes a new year, we renew our core values and continue our efforts to pursue them. Over the past year, the Chamber has continued its efforts in fulfilling our vision for our remarkable community. With the community’s support, we have had the privilege of utilizing our events, team members, and resources to assist struggling businesses. In honor of these successes, we would like to reflect on the values that inspired us to execute them.
The Chamber Seminar Team consistently utilizes our members and their resources to teach other members with subject matter experts, keeping our community well-informed. The Chamber is continuously dedicated to the success of others. We started 2021 with concentrations on our efforts to promote our struggling restaurant industry. Taste Around the Town, our modified annual event, has shown tremendous success as an avenue to attract business for participating restaurants. We are also continuing our monthly Restaurant Spotlight, featuring two restaurants per month in an effort to assist our local restaurants in attracting deserved business.
Building positive relationships has always been a priority for the Chamber as connecting people and businesses is one of our focuses. Our events and activities, such as business seminars and webinars, Business After Hours, Meet the New Members, and Networking Breakfast, all bring people together, creating positive bonds. We frequently refer Chamber members to each other through emails and events, strengthening business interactions and progress while encouraging lasting friendships.
The Chamber is passionate about treating everyone with Honesty, Integrity, and Respect. Through our Diversity and Inclusion team we aim to bridge the gap and to showcase and celebrate the unique diversity that exists in our community. Our doors are always open for calls, emails, and scheduled visits, allowing you to utilize us as a resource. Our C.A.R.E.S Team directs our community relation efforts and remains committed to embracing and promoting the value of teamwork, community service and stewardship. e believe it is our responsibility as citizens of such a diverse community to stand up for the progress we seek. We hold ourselves to the values and vision The Woodlands Area Chamber was founded on. Those are building positive relationships, engaging resources for the community, dedicating ourselves to others’ success and treating everyone with honesty, integrity and respect. Q: What is your overall mission/vision? A: The mission of Children’s Books on Wheels (CBOW) 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization is to promote literacy by providing books, educational literature, resources services for Pre-K to 12th grade students and their families in multiple languages, for north, south, easy, west, central Montgomery County.

How Children’s Books on Wheels provide a mobile literacy resource service to children (pre-k to 12th grade) in underdeveloped communities.
I am humbled and thankful when thinking receiving the Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major Award a few years ago. My ancestors have contributed sufficiently to the history of our Tamina Freedman’s Town. The ability to read can change a life thus Children’s Books On Wheels non-profit mobile literacy access to all children and their families. Q: Tell us about Children’s Books on Wheels? A: Children’s Books on Wheels (CBOW) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization established in 2004, located in a rural part of Montgomery County, Texas in Tamina County. Rita Wiltz is the Founder and Executive Director, along with a team of dedicated, diverse volunteers and Board Members who provide services to those that are in need. Q: When did you start this organization? A: At CBOW we celebrated our Sweet Sixteen mobile literacy status. During our sweet Sixteen Celebration, 1,600 books were donated.
Q: How many children were you able to help in 2020? A: 95% percent of the people that are serviced by CBOW are below the poverty level guideline. In 2020 we partnered with other non-profits, for profit companies, schools, and churches to provide access to remote services. “Mobile access is what we do when our communities were affected by COVID-19 we stepped up to the plate and hit a home run”. CBOW was responsible for the first rural COVID Pandemic testing at the Tamina Community Park, 693 nasal tests in 3 days. At COVID-19 feeding sites CBOW provided CHIP, Medicaid, Food Stamp SNAP application assistance and enrollment in the Healthcare Marketplace in English and Spanish. CBOW provided VITA IRS free tax preparation at mobile tax sites in 6 languages this is our 11th year to provide this service. PPE, masks, gloves, hand sanitizer was donated to those that could not afford them for their children and families. KIDSTECH digital literacy was launched helpful hardware for low-income children and Veteran families. Laptop donations accepted not older than 15. CBOW is the afterschool location for the YMCA children, hopefully we can begin those services again soonest. Successful partnership supplied 7,573 meals were served at the Sleepy Hollow Multipurpose Building home of CBOW for 3-months during the rise in numbers for the Pandemic Monday through Friday 11am to 1:30pm. Students that attend Conroe Independent School District in school and online school received assistance with homework, backpacks, access to a Hotspots, nutritious snacks, school supplies and is currently available to date. In 2020, children, at shelters, the homeless, at-risk youth, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and COVID-19 feedings attendees were donated 10,000 books in multiple languages, books are at no cost. Q: What are some upcoming events? A: We are excited about this upcoming Tax Season families per the IRS guideline will receive free no cost tax preparation prepared by IRS certified volunteers. Appointment only services during this new climate of COVID and how it will be structured this year to help our rural families. Social distancing in place at all our events safety of the volunteers is a priority. Q: How can people get involved? A: Volunteers are always needed, adult and school age students. New and gently used books we love. CBOW has a community garden Della’s Community named after my mother she loved fresh vegetables and fruits. It was our special time; I truly miss those days and she would donate the harvest to residents in Tamina and the surrounding community. If you have a green thumb or would like to get outside and spend time in nature plus, it can be a family fun day. Q: How can people donate? A: CBOW is a non-profit organization donation are tax deductible. The Sleepy Hollow Multipurpose Building has a lot of traffic a goal is to power wash and refurbish the floors, along with to replace the countertops in the kitchen. Virtual Internship Program Offers Career Insights
E
ducation for Tomorrow Alliance is going virtual...again! This spring, eleventh graders can apply to participate in the online version of the Student Internship Program (SIP). SIP is designed for career exploration to help shape students’ educational and professional goals. The program is sustained by community volunteers who serve as career mentors. Ninety-four percent of 2020 SIP students stated that they felt better prepared for life after high school due to their participation. One participant shared, “My biggest takeaway is that having a strong network of people that I can call upon is important. I need to be open to new opportunities and people who come into my life, as I never know how they may shape my path.” SIP students participate in several activities that encourage career development. EfTA is looking for volunteers to share their career experiences and skills through online sessions with commitments ranging from about two to six hours with most activities planned as online sessions in June 2021.

Industry specific career panel - Share your career story and requirements for your profession in a Q&A format via Zoom Online training for career development skills - Offer students tips on resume writing, interview skills, and more. Company-based career panels - Help organize a career panel that highlights the range of career positions available at your company (engineer, lawyer, sales, etc.) Be an online mentor to a group of 5 - 8 students that are interested in your career and help them work through a project/case study that will be provided by EfTA - Meet virtually two or three times to offer insights and feedback to a small group.

RIBBON CUTTINGS Recently joined the Chamber and are looking for added exposure and visibility? Ribbon cuttings are normally scheduled on Fridays between 10AM and 3PM. Chamber C.A.R.E.S. Committee Host Successful Donation Drive The Chamber C.A.R.E.S. Committee partnered with Interfaith of The Woodlands for a Coat Donation Drive during the month of December. The team actively reached out to their own co-workers, networking groups, friends and family to help in this mission. The donation drive brought in over 500 coats to help keep those in need stay warm over the winter months. In speaking with Lucy Gomez at Interfaith of The Woodlands, she expressed gratitude as they saw a decrease in corporate donations due to many organizations working remotely.
